  • iris & phil - gorgeous

  • Enables the envisioning of a more precious world...pure grace for sure.

  • I love Iris's voice. It has a sincere honesty that I find very comforting.

  • I'd imagine your chances would be slim mortimeruk, if you can't tell the difference between a cello and her instrument, which is actually a double bass.

  • You can't knock his taste, though.

  • i loved it!

  • this is so georgous xxxxxxxx

  • Just lovely!!

See you this friday@Mccabes in Santa monica.

  • I just Iris. Such raw talent, not marred by the glam of the music industry.

  • check out phil he is bowled over by iris fer sur

  • Beautiful lyrics, beautiful music, beautiful woman, beautiful song.

  • Molly Mason looking seraphic on bass

  • DonegalRaymie201---apalachians. eastern KY/TN

  • I'm going to be listening to her LIVE in an hour! =D

  • pure gold. amazingly beautiful song from the legendary transatlantic sessions. im possible to tire of these wonderful songs

  • Wow, the has a very interesting voice, I've never heard someone like her. This is a very nice song.

  • Honestly,is this an accent from somewhere in Southern US? I can't place it- Tennessee? or Kentucky?

    It sounds genuine anyway!

  • Arkansas

  • Iris was born in Arkansas, but her family moved to Southern California when she was three. She grew up in the city of Cypress, which is between Long Beach and Anaheim. She sure has a unique voice, huh?

  • I think she is an Arkie - Arkansas roots/family raised in California. Jim Ringer was an Arkie - another favorite.

  • my god wonderful i am a new fan

  • I saw her a few years ago in concert. She was great. I GOT A SIGNED CD!

  • I first heard of Iris in the movie, "The Songcatcher", and fell in love immediately. Her voice is so pure and authentic. Just love her and all her work.

  • I first heard her at these wonderfull first Transatlantic Sessions ('95-'96). She's so authentic, with such a pure voice and performance. She ís her songs. An absolute revelation.

  • What a great song. If you haven't heard Heather Masse's version performed on April 18th's Prairie Home Companion, I highly suggest giving it a listen.

  • so beautiful

  • This ranks as one of Iris's best...

  • For Jennifer,

    from Bruce

  • I send this to all my friends, especially if they are down or feeling bad with a cold.

  • beautiful thankyou.

  • For you MaryAnne DiCostanzo. You are missed.

    Love,

    Lisa

  • Look at the recently passed John Martyn's transatlantic stuff...superb. One includes the other-worldly Eddi Reader brilliantly backing him (He Got All the Whiskey).

  • It's the Northeast Arkansas accent that's unique. The way she bends words and twangs certain phrases.. beautiful.

  • i have 2 agree

  • Such a beautiful voice. It captivates me, brings tears to my eyes with it's beauty.

  • She has such an unusual distinctive voice but it is very effective. Its a very country voice but lends itself beautifully to folk music....love it love it ..... raises me up to the next level

  • I discovered her music in the SongCatcher-I want more-so beautiful.

  • beautiful song put nice county music to shame

  • How can I ever listen to another song again?

Someone once told me a story of a friend of his who had gone to Australia and there somewhere in the outback had found a place of ultimate beauty. In fact a place that was so perfect that he just couldn't bear it, so he took his own life right there in that place. Listening to Iris sing this song, gives me an idea of what he must have felt.

  • this is my cousin lol

  • Beautiful song, beautiful people.

  • Such a beautiful song. The more I listen to it the more I love it.

  • Exactly. If you don't appreciate this then you need to stab out your eardrums.

This is the most wonderful song, especially if you've ever tried to write a song.

  • I reckon that you'd have to be a pretty hard soul not to be just enchanted by Iris Dement. I just love her.

  • You got it.

Thanks for sharing it. Got some nice "dimples"too.

  • "Infamous Angel" is one of the best records in the whole world.

  • nice, sweet lovely voice.

  • just beautiful

  • she is great.

  • iris is so awesome! we love everything she sings.

  • Four unbelievable beautiful albums and then trapped in writers blockade, no new song in years. But I'll wait patientilly and will be there.

  • Isn't that just the way it goes with songwriting........most of the good stuff comes out of misery/heartbreak.......but only when it's new to you

  • I don't know why they gave you poor comments,it's just your opinion and taste....I like her voice though.

  • never heard of you before, but you have one of the most beautiful voices i've ever heard. would you please join my band!

  • Thanks JT, for sending and I really enjoy this one. *****.

  • Oh, this is wonderful.

  • Nice video - great song.

  • Voice of an angel, my God what a singer.!

  • I watched Iris Dement at the Southgate House in Newport, Kentucky from about 15 ft. away. She blew me away; I doubt if I went for a drink or to go to the bathroom. I hope , next time, she brings her talented hubby, Greg Brown.

  • Really beautiful! So pure and sweet! Congratulations!

  • bravo to ms. Dement and her band...what class act and such grace...destined to be a classic...one of my favorites...kudos....ps, what a yodel, surely she must be part German

  • I saw her at Merlefest. While she was singing, a mosquito or fly flew into her mouth and interrupted her song. She stopped and excused herself for the interruption and started the tune all over. What a tremendous performer. It might have been this song, but I do not remember.

  • o my god ive died and gone to heaven

    gby

    Chris

  • I can't really add anything to all the great comments here, except to say that if it's within your capability, you must see her live. It's an experience like no other...

  • What a find! I don't really like country music, or folk for that matter. But a great artist chages everything, so I keep an open mind. She is captivating. (Are there videos or her available on DVD?)

  • What a talent! Could watch her all day. Those of you have seen her in person are really lucky. Would hope she would produce a new album.

  • Iris DeMent...what can you say?

Absolutely fantastic...brings so much joy...and all 4 albums are brilliant.

The world is a better, happier place because of her. Her beautiful honesty, sincerity shines through...

Iris DeMent what can I say? Thanx...

  • nellowys, who can blame the accordian player. What jaded soul could hear Iris sing this song without falling in love with her! I echo tjb70's observation: The beautiful vulnerability of Iris's voice makes her one-of-a-kind! What an artist! And, yes, the yodeling sends chills!

  • Her voice ... oh the voice. Just watching her sing is fascinating. I'm in love....

  • Accordian guy looks like he has a huge crush on Iris. Beautiful song! And I agree, her voice is pure magic.

  • hey i have a huge crush on iris

  • that lucky bastard

  • I love this so much, it melts my heart.

  • The beautiful vulnerability of Iris's voice makes her one-of-a-kind! What an artist! And, yes, the yodeling sends chills!

  • 3:30 to 3:47 is the most beautiful sound in the world

  • Brings tears to my eyes, goosebumps all-over, and i gasp at the end when she yodels.

  • .....lovely.

  • This song has made me an Iris-addict!!! Unparalleled!

  • Perhaps one of the least appreciated talents of our time.

  • Dear God I just discovered all these Transatlantic Sessions clubs and they are wonderful, I never knew of the show.

  • "clips," i meant to say.

  • She's intoxicating...

  • That's perfect. She leaves me feeling lightheaded and giddy. She's amazing!

  • i love her!!

  • "The dance floor's for gliding

    And not jumping over ponies

    Where boots and gold bracelets

Come and meet as they should..."

Genius of the same magnitude as Joni Mitchell or Gordon Lightfoot...

    Peace,

    Toby

  • this woman is awesome. catch her live. I love her!

  • Luv it...I really like Aselin Debisons version too

  • Iris's pure, honest voice has a beautiful vulnerability. Some of her songs give me chills, too! She's amazing!

  • I love hear voice very much.

    Just make my chilling...

Saw her for the first time on Dutch TV in the late eighties.

  • I've just listened to this twice. Magnificent

  • Its not often a unique voice like Iris Dement comes along.I just love this girls voice, real country straight from the heart.

  • iris i love you !!!!!!!!!

  • Country Folk music came over from 'Old Europe' back when it was a great power of influence in the world. Maybe some day 'Old Europe' will find itself and return to greatness, only by God willin', that is.

  • das nenne ich musik !!!!

  • Iris DeMent has one of the most honest and purest voices in music. I really hope I get to see her on my forthcoming visit to the United States. I just can't get enough of her beautiful songs.

  • I can't get enough of Iris!!!!!!

  • And yet all these people love her. Maybe someday you'll grow up. Maybe not.

  • Emmylou Harris, James Taylor and John Prine all seem to enjoy doing duets with Iris.

You need to do some homework boy. Might try cleaning out your ears first. ;-)

  • i'd like to rip your fucking head off you cunt this woman is fucking amazing. i'm English and i've heard of her so many people in the world would proberbly know her to. Prick

  • So get the hell out of here and go listen to your "rap" crap. What a moron.

  • that was for "emmtampa". The message didn't end up where I intended it.

  • And it would have taken what, about one second to click on to the next video if you didn't like it, but you would rather trash her here?

  • She is amazing I just dont know why she is not opn tour making a lot of us crazy with her beatyfull voice and sweet songs.. I love you.

  • This is my favorite song by Iris! Thanks!

  • This music is invisible on American Radio....and so, as far as I am concerned, subversive it in its strict, sweet beauty.

  • Love you Iris- your music is part of our home, cabin and hearts!

  • So beautiful, in so many ways.

  • Are there any complete performances of the "Transatlantic Sessions" series available as a official DVD release?

  • Series 3 complete plus a few unbroadcast extras is now readily available on DVD from UK retailers. Region-free, but PAL format, so you might need to check your intended playback kit for compatibility.

Still nothing official DVD-wise for the previous two series.

  • Her voice is America to me.

  • Don't tell Greg or my wife, but I love Iris.

    Dave

  • She is such an angel, I wish she would record more often but what she gives us is quality.

  • Iris is very special...

can I also say that Folkmonster was wrong about the keys - I think it starts in Eflat and goes to F. At least thats what my guitar tells me.

  • So lovely! Couldn't be better!

  • Iris My Iris where art thou? Please come back and make one more sweet Melody.

You and your music are so rare and so lovely.

    We Miss you.

  • She recently performed in Ringwood New Jersey before a sold out venue, still sounds great.

  • What wonderful warm music. Not much better in life than sitting around making music with a bunch of friends--and that's what this seems to be.

  • "but a no it's just a no to you, wake up from the slumber and dare to discover the new melody"

  • Great song and music, too bad we dont heare so much from them here in Holland- we just adore you.. With love from Holland.xxx

  • Thank you Jeffrey Dale for finding"our song" and sending it to me for my birthday. I love you truly, deeply and forever, as much as I adore Ms. Iris and this favorite melody which brought us together.

    xoxoxoxox susie lynn

  • A wonderful singer. And sooo pretty!

  • I love Iris so much.

  • Molly Mason is simply gorgeous...and very talented too.

  • I love this music,

    My soul is taken.

  • I miss Iris Dement's music. Come back Iris!

  • Where did she go??? I love Iris more than life itself...her voice is so amazing to my ears. Her first record is a true classic, that the rest of the world seemed to miss.

  • reminds me of being 5 and listening to my mum sing this in the kitchen

  • Holloway-I think there must have been a few takes of this-and playback. The vid starts with the capo on fret two then, lo and behold, at 31 seconds , it's on three!

  • What a great song! Does Iris play with her guitar tuned extra-high? It looks like she's capo'd the 2nd fret but I have to capo to the 3rd fret to match her... :-)

  • Er... the tunes modulates from D to E. The starts with 'C' shapes and then goes to D.

    FM

  • Thanks for posting one of my favorite songs, by one of my favorite singers.

  • enchanting

  • A SWEET SONG SWEETLY SUNG

  • I hope she comes to britain again, I'd love to see her. Lovely to see these vids

    Thanks Vicky

  • Nog steeds vreselijk goed!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Iris is fantastic.  But I want to know whether the bass player is single.

  • Nope - hitched to the fiddle player.

  • how can you not love her voice??

  • Taken as an expletive of admiration.

  • I've been listening to Iris for years now and I think she's awesome. She's the closest most original voice when compared to someone like Kitty Wells. When you here'em you know who is singing cause they are soooooo unique. I know God broke the mold when he made this awesome performer. Thanks for posting this nice video. Post some more!!!!!!!! ;)

    Sincerely,

    Troy Leong

    aka The Traditionalist

  • I wipe another tear from my eye. Thank's Ms. Dement. Great music and pretty as a picture. What more can a man ask for?

  • rickmystic is right, it is a bouzouki and Donal is famous for playing it, same musical family though Mr Freereed player. This series was fantastic and better than series two that somehow gets repeated on sky TV.

I believe that there was a petition to reshow it, I guess there must be contractual problems because of all the performers involved, I still have my vhs copies of some of the shows but they are worn to the bone.

  • I worship at the altar of Iris DeMent, pure genius.

    Great Post 5/5 stars

  • Great song, heard several years ago...nice to see on Video...recorded at some castle in Scotland, I think, for some BBC2 sessions

  • C'mon AkkordionBloke, its a bouzouki (originally invented by the Greeks) played by the famous Donal Lunny of Ireland, if I'm not mistaken, who introduced the instrument to Irish music and got it in the neck from the purists. I have owned both a bouzouki and several

mandolins so I know I'm right. I could get to like Iris too, folks!

  • I just want to say thankyou to whoever posted this, I have just played it down the phone to my twin brother who cried with happiness as it reminded him of when we used to look forward to the transatlantic sessions on tv. To say the BBC broke new ground when they produced them is an understatement!! More of the same please BBC get rid of shit like Big Brother and pay our license fee on programming like this fantastic creation. Thanks again mnemonyxx you have made my brothers and my year!!

  • You have hit the nail on the head about the BBC they repeat loads of shit but seldom air the good stuff. They are also missing out on an opportunity to sell this on DVD, all you can by is DrWho and Little Britain. Whose BBC is it.

  • I had the great chance to see Iris not only once, but TWICE in Petaluma, California at the Mystic Theater...afterwards, as MOST of the audience had left, she came done into the audience and talked with me and signed the CD's that I bought...she is so real and humble...love the way she dresses...right off the rack and her "orthopedic" shoes are a hoot...IRIS, I love you...

  • Wow. I am 61 years old I have never heard of Iris Dement- seems I have wasted my life searching for her.

What an artist. Comparable to nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kate Rusby.

  • Beautiful

  • she is the best...her voice is just amazing..fantastic archive footage.

  • love her,...really
