  • @JME1973 is the smoke alarm your talking about hardwired or battery powered?

  • @MOconnorclan It was battery powered and it was a an old first alert. I finally found the commercial. The commercial from about 1979 was on youtube for a while but it looks like it was removed. The light on the smoke alarm provided enough light to light up a dark hallway. The GE smoke alarm was actually featured in that commercial but it was advertising First Alert.

  • Awesome! Where can I find a home sentry smoke alarm? I want one for my collection.

  • Is there anything GE can't do?

  • Buy what from me, Crazy? The smoke alarm? It was tossed out quite awhile ago, when they stopped manufacturing the battery for this particular unit. They stopped making the battery, because it contained mercury, and I guess it was an environmental hazard.

  • This was from a CBC "Hockey Night in Canada" broadcast, as I can tell at the beginning of this clip.

  • I also remember seeing a commercial in the late 1970's about smoke alarms and I believe it was for General Electric but not sure. The alarm featured had a screechy sound and it lit up when the alarm sounded. They were circular shaped. Does anyone know anything on these alarms? I have tried to find them on ebay and look for info on them online but I can't find anything.

  • I am guess that the lights came on because the people in the house woke up. That is just my guess though. These were neat alarms back in the day. I agree the sound they made would get a person's attention. It is a far cry from the smoke detectors of today.

  • Our home used to have one of these. But we stopped using it, because it took a 12-volt mercury battery that was 15 bucks! A new detector was less expensive than this! It was nonetheless a cool machine.

  • $15 for a battery! thats nuts! how offen did you have to change the battery? and how did you know when? i never knew they made mercury batteries.

  • It would beep about once per minute when the battery was low, like most detectors. Yes, they used to make mercury batteries. I don't think they're available anymore, because they are bad for the environment.

  • You asked me how frequently the battery needed to be changed. It was about once per year.

  • they don't beep when they sound it's more of a high pitched screech. i would have the shit scared out of me if it ever whent off. and why are all the lights coming on in the house?

  • My niistake! its the 9- VOLT DC THAT MY COSIN HAs

  • Hmm.

    A GE smoke detector.

Certainly came in handy whenever your GE coffee maker decided to catch fire.

  • I have all three models of these-

    -The 120 volt hardwired version

-The 12.6 volt battery powered unit (shown in this video)

    -The 9-volt battery powered unit.

They all still work as good as if I just bought them off the shelf thirty years ago.

  • I don't yet have the 120 VAC unit, but I do have 2 12.6 volt units and around 3 9-volt units

  • where do i find one of these? i want the 12.6 volt battery powered unit.

  • My Cosin has That

    G.E. 120 V . A .c Sentry Smoke Alarm

  • The smoke alarm was invented or first made a sale in 1978? Cool!!!
