I went to Burnt Mill Comprehensive until 1968 when we moved to Australia. We lived at 72 Rivermill. I have wonderful memories of playing with my mates down by the river, the fields of poppies down by the river and peering over the little footbridge into the green water of the lock below. Thanks for the memories.
Ahh most of the places I remember well. Moved there in 1966 and left in 1979. I must admit I never did like Harlow much, the concrete jungle, but seeing the old pictures brings back some memories. Sadly not very good ones. My first job was at Thomson Engineering in 1973. I also remember the fire that burnt Woolworth down. I do remember the awful bus service. You never knew when one would turn up.
I lived in Harlow for 9 years but left in 1973. I have never got over that loss. Some people say it is a dump and I know it has its rough side. However, the green spaces, woods and enormous trees, coupled with my happy childhood memories, driven by a passionate interest in nature, make it a unique place in my heart forever. It has changed but these photos remind me how it was, and many places have not changed.
Some great memories here. I lived in Harlow in the 60's until my family migrated to Australia. Even looks like my old school. Can anyone confirm if the school in 7.43 is Kingsmoor?
9:05 - I KNEW I wasn't imagining it! I remember the cops would show up at Fawbert and Barnard's and do these road safety demonstrations with toy cars and little roads and zebra crossings. Fantastic.
Great photos - can't recognise loads of places - memory has faded. Left Harlow in the 80s - but spent my childhood there. Would love to know where the really old ones were taken as I have found out that my ancestors were from Harlow too.
@sportmadme Too true my friend, I used to skate over at the old Staple! I grew up in Longbanks. I'll never forget a poignant piece of graffiti that was sprayed on a wall in the empty/soon to be bulldozed shopping centre. It read "Staple Tye will never die!"
Thanks for posting these, that was a time when this town had a town identity and was a community unlike todays I dont give a dam attitude and self-destructive community.
A lot I remember but some just before my time as I noticed some photo's before Harlow New Town :-) ahh the Bird Cage, spent many a weekend staggering out of there LOL

Once again I'm reminded of just how much space there was around everything.

The picture in 0.16 looks very much like the buildings behind us in the Pinnacles Horsecroft road it has the same building layout and design

@oraclecomponents
Greaves and Thomas - there's little to no information about Greaves and Thomas on the internet, certainly not in relation to Harlow.
