  • GREAT...CONGRATULATIONS...

  • @saxoplayer11 : Thank you!

  • OMG !! .................. excelente ! (Y)

  • @Danibm95 : Thank you! =)

  • Great tone, great song and excellent cover! Do you use Rotosound round wounds by any chance?

I've been playing Rics since 1973 and just bought my second one -- a 4001 that I'm having refinished in Walnut with crushed pearl inlays, checkered binding, and an aftermarket horsehoe bridge p/u. Has a toaster neck p/u and wavy Grovers already. Gotta love Rickenbackers. Nothing comes close to the sound. :)

  • @Painkill3r4 : I am running a set set of cheapo GHS Bass Boomers here. Wow, your project RIC sounds great!

  • if he was playing it on any other bass i would have disliked it

  • @Cradley51 you're lame.

  • why is your bass in a different tune?

  • @narathedog : It was more natural to play tuned down.

  • @motorpsych0 I've heard of people having trouble down tuning on 4001's just recently got me a 1976 fireglo. and prefer lower tuning, but i also don;t want to damage the bass. any tips on downtuning a rick?

  • @fatherg101: I did nothing to mine. There is some fretbuzz as a result of downtuning, but I will not risk breaking my truss rods for that!

  • Man, good stuff! Your dynamics and feel are fantastic!

  • @TheShapcal : Hey, thanks for that! =)

  • Frank Zappa on the Rick ;)

  • anyone know how much would a Rickenbacker 4001 Azureglo cost??????

  • buen cover!! hermoso el bajo

  • I thought Zappa was dead.

  • is your channel named after "Motorpsycho Nightmare" from another side of bob dylan? if so, good on ya, i love that song and album.

  • @theWorldofWolseley : Bob beat me to it! I THOUGHT I had an original name, until others informed me. I totally dig ZIMMY!

  • @motorpsych0 Ha.

  • Awesome cover, and awesome Rickenbacker, I would do almost ANYTHING for, wait is that a 4003 or a 4001? Either way I would do almost anything for one.

  • @SkittlzNinja : 4001S! Thanks for watching!

  • HAHAHA 9:50 YOU ROCK DUDE!!

  • @warmaster2006 : Thanks, man!

  • SUPERB JOB AS ALWAYS BRO...YOU AND monoforone ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO COULD ACHIEVE SUCH TONE...RICKENBACKER ROCK ALL THE WAY!!

  • You look like Zappa. You play guitar like guitar like all my progressive heroes, AND the bass for my favourite Yes song...

    You know you're awesome, right?

  • @MagicAccent : Hey man, thanks for that! =D You haev a great rest of the day, now!

  • No offence, but you sorta look like Frank Zappa. :)

  • @ThrashingSavage : No offense taken! I get that all the time, and I am a HUGE FZ fan! =D

  • @yamahabb400 : Ha! I'm trying to figure out WHICH Eagle! =D

  • And I can tell you all he is my friend!!! What a great job, Robert.

  • @danieliasbeck : Thank you very much, Daniel!

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawesome cover for an awesome song

    you rule !

  • @Bitemarkx : Thank you!

  • Greaaaatt job, man!!! Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @paulohsgoes1959 : Thank you very much! =D

  • This is just totally awesome, my mind is completely blown...

  • @arbiqued : Thank you! =D

  • I started playing bass I think I was around 13 when I heard roundabout. I said what is that I have to play bass I could not believe what Chris was doing. I have studied there music going on 40 years I know this song well. My man you did a stellar job. My 52 year old beat up hands would be laying on the floor to get thru it like you did. Not only that I would probably have to go wipe. How you got that sound out of that little backline just goes to show its all in the hands. Outstanding Thanks

  • @playbass4unow : As challenging as this song was, I still plan to do "Lucky Seven" from Fish Out Of Water (CS solo album). THAT will put my 53 yr old fingers on the floor, for sure! =)

  • Outstanding job

  • @playbass4unow : Thank you!

  • My good sir, this is difficult. I have the score for organ/synth/piano, and the bass line is included in the bass for piano, and dear god is it challenging. Keep up the good work :D

  • @badger861 : Thanks! This was my personal mountaintop! =D

  • Amazing job! I also liked that creativity there where u held up the lyrics. But seriously, amazing bass playing, and I'm jealous you have a rickenbacker... you sound amazing

  • @69Mushrooms : Hey, I appreciate that! =)

  • look at you go Robert! Awesomely well done!

  • @jackdaddyfbomb : Thanks again, CL! (this is CL, isn't it?)

  • @motorpsych0 - yes [hello] it's me

  • 4:13 - 4:20 is one of my favorite bass parts of any song. well done.

  • @125jsr : Thank you, 125jsr! =)

  • is it an humbucker on the neck position? what do you think comparing to the hi gain??

  • @san5a89 : Both pickups are Hi-Gain's (single coils). These sound best when played in the middle position (pickup switch). =)

  • @motorpsych0 Yes they're pretty powerful but I am looking for a warmer sound..like paul maccartney you know...and I never heard a sample of this neck pickup (the toaster...)

  • man the tone is so dirty

  • whooa!!!!! awesome! nice playing with killer tone. you just burned the rickenbecker

  • parfaite reprise du maurcaux avec la marque que chris squire utilse .chris squire a comencer la bass a 16 ans .

  • @Dartorji : Merci! =)

  • tuned down a half step?...man I miss my old Rickenbacker

  • never thought I'd get to the point where I'd be learning this song...thanks fer the video :)

  • @TheUrukhai1 : Hope this video helps you get it done! Note: I'm tuned down a tad-bit because I thought CS did too.

  • You rock, just it :D

  • @Khrun123 : Thanks!

  • My father has the exact same type of bass! he has 2 rickenbacker 3001s, one's a azureglo and the other is a tabacco burst, and he has a rickenbacker 4004 cheyenne 2 that is a dyed green, so you could still see the stripes in the wood. BTW azureglo is a rare color for 3001s

  • awesome! killer tone, you absolutely nailed it!

  • +1 on lowering the tone to flat.

    Awesome playing ;)

hope I can play that good soon too =D

  • Man, just grow long hair and you look like Frank Zappa!

  • what gear are you using? u sound just like chris

  • @BassDude50000 : My gear is listed earlier in this thread. Thanks for the comment! =)

  • tuned to e flat? why?

  • @aidange2 : It was a more natural position for me. =)

  • Well done. Impressive work on one of my all time favorite songs. Thanks for sharing your skills (and subtle humor).

  • @wolff1955 : Thank YOU! =)

  • I didn't know Frank Zappa played bass! What happened to your soulpatch, Frankie?

  • @domdecosa : LOL! :-[~

  • @domdecosa Hey, heard Black Napkins yet?? Crazy guitar solo.

  • Just showed it to my twin brother on my iPhone he loved it too. Thanks.

  • @RockshadysGmail : Thank you!

  • Thank you! Awesome! I'm 42 years old but back in the 9th grade I pulled fragile out of my dads record stack cause of Roger Deans artwork and put it on. I heard Roundabout and instantly remembered hearing it when I was probably 7 it blew me away! There was something about the sound. I figured out it was the bass that did it to me. I got a used bass (an old Kingston SG) at a resale shop a week later for $45.00. By 10th and 11th grade I was playing with all the Yes stuff and anything progressively

  • @RockshadysGmail : Great story! Thanks for sharing! =D

  • Great!

All. The Bass line and the flip book.

    Thanks for posting.

    José Couto

    Porto

    Portugal

    P.S.: I love YES, too...

  • @jamcouto1 : Thank you! =)

  • awesome groove and feel. chris squire would be impressed! i think your sound is richer. that bass, could you let me in on your sound secret? what year rick-o? is that a toaster or hi-gain pick up at the neck? the bridge pick-up is it a hi-gain or horseshoe? capacitors? strings? etc.? pls?! pls?! thanks! ( i forgot to ask what type of strings) :)

  • @adebicki : This is a bone stock 1973 4001-S. The pickups are both Hi-Gain on the late 1973 year models. The strings are GHS Bass Boomers and the amp used here is a little GK Backline 115. It is miked with a Shure SM57. The key to the tone is the amp. It really conjures up CS-s tone with the contour knob option.

    Thanks for watching! =D

  • @motorpsych0 awesome! all your vids rule! i've learned much here (i need more lessons!). no toaster huh?, i like the hi-gains. my new 4003 sounds nothing like this. maybe i should get the pickups restrung. this sounds like a grand piano with chime and bite. yes, GHS bass boomers, i love them strings, very musical! thanks again!

  • awesome groove and feel. chris squire would be impressed! i think your sound is richer. that bass, could you let me in on your sound secret? what year rick-o? is that a toaster or hi-gain pick up at the neck? the bridge pick-up is it a hi-gain or horseshoe? capacitors? etc.? pls?! pls?! thanks!

  • lol i love that flip book

    i also love YES :D

  • @LeJaxx : Thanks! =D

  • awesome job! Chris Squire would be proud. =D

  • @TmasterREY : Thank you, Tmaster!

  • Great job. I was listening to this coming home from work wondering if I will ever reach the point of tackling something this tough on bass.

  • @tnhomeboy :That's exactly what I thought one day. I started with "Yours Is No Disgrace", and then proceeded to this one. It was my mountaintop. =)

  • Hi. You tuned down one sharp, didn't you. I play in 440 and its e flat.

  • @Jfoertsch : Yeah, I sort of cheated! ;-)

  • Amazing Work!

  • @ArideTWT : Thank you! =D

  • beautiful bass. i just found one (4003) for a tremendous deal...i can't wait to get it. :D awesome cover.

  • @moggieman10 : Congrats on the 4003! You'll treasure it for LIFE!

  • @winkydee : Yes, it was my personal "mountaintop", if you know what I mean! Thanks for watching, winkydee! =)

  • Sharp!!!!!!!!!!.......... Distance!. (8)

  • You can do a execlent sound of a Ric´s ....

    Woah!

  • @GORFF987 : Thanks! =)

  • You leaved me without words...you played that beautifully!!!

  • @BiaginiAlessandro : Thank you very much! =)

  • Love this base

  • @MrBosuil : Thank you! =)

  • @motorpsych0

My pleasure, got Yes en base in my vains

  • excellent job man..on the spot...

  • @tiololo69 : Thank you! =)

  • Why is your bass tuned to Eb?

  • @anonemousone : It was easier to play here. =)

  • Nice zappa mustache ;nice bass. love 1

  • @MrDiscordinated hey it's not a zappa if it doesn't have the soulpatch under the bottom lip.

  • @zorozornes soulpatch swagger !

  • Awesome playing, Here's a request....Would love to hear you play Rick Wakeman's "Catherine of Aragon" from Six Wives of Henry VIII. Squire's bass is just amazing on this song!!

  • @Progrocker70 : Hmmmm.... I'll give that some thought! =)

  • Phew is right!!! I'm trying to learn this bassline now and it's definitely PHEW. Great job :)

  • @ProgMom67 : Hey, thanks ProgMom! I haven't seen anything new on your channel in a while, so I look forward to seeing your cover of HOTS! I know you will do it justice!!! BTW, what type bass do you play?

    Thanks again, motorpsych0 =)

  • @motorpsych0 I have some half finished videos that I need to get done one of these days! I've been too busy to make videos, but I never am too busy to play and learn more music :) I have 2 bass guitars - a washburn and an ibanez. Wish I had a Ric!

  • @ProgMom67 : I know what you mean. A few years ago, I posted a vid every 3 weeks or so. Then I got busy, and sort of stopped. No biggie. I still play often!! =)

  • nice cover dudee you'r amazing!!

  • @alexreu7 : Thanks! It was nothing!!! ;-)

  • sharp distance , how can the sun with its arms all around me :p

  • I'm just curious if you are primarily a guitarist who plays bass, or primarily a bassist who plays guitar.

  • @JonXVX : Guitar first, then bass....but I enjoy them both! Thanks for watching! =)

  • nice tone and playing!!!!

  • Excellent cover, man! Well played!

  • sweet bass playing. and the slideshow made the vid. lol. thanks for uploading

  • @andristic : Thank you! =)

  • killer YES cover of Chris Squire and the legendary and bass you're using is a classic beauty... unique sound i love for bass... thankx for the great performance... great one with the lyrics!

  • you should try YYZ ... but i can see that you only play with a pick :/ .....what do you use to record the sound??

  • @juakinote : I play through a little GK Backline 115 amp, miked with a Shure SM57.

  • good cover :D

  • @leviux : Thanks! =)

  • What's your tuning for this song? Half step down?

  • @tylerwylie : Yes.

  • that time edit was a total buzz kill :(

    i blame the tube

  • Nice cover! Enjoyed it!

  • really nice, god thats a long song but one of my favorite yes songs. must have take a while to learn that ..

  • @westrokker : Yeah, it took about three weeks to get the phrasing down, but I have listened to the song all my life! Just had to learn how to play it!!!! =)

  • Man, if i could get that exact bass left handed, my life would be complete, its a shame Ric isnt doing custom orders :/

  • fuckin' brilliant man

  • @davidmorse92 : Thanks, David! =D

  • Nice grover tuners on that.....Bass is a '72 or so? Full width triangle inlays, grovers, etc etc

    cool stuff, and great playing!

  • @clank4001 : You know your RIC's! It's a '73 model, built shortly after they changed from the toaster pickup to the hi-gain pickup at the neck position. I also have the OHSC!

  • @motorpsych0 Ha! I couldn't make out the hi gain- had I been able to, I woulda picked '73 because of the 1/2 inch neck pup spacing!

  • @motorpsych0 Also, I have a '75 Rickenbacker 4001, it's my baby. White/black trim

  • wow dude, ive been playing 35 yrs and cant touch you

  • @starmarkusa : Thanks, man. I'm really just a hack player! =)

  • Rickenbacker the best! RULLES

  • Nice sound ,what size strings are you using?

  • @MPericolo : It's a Medium/Lisght set, but I don't recall the gauges...

  • Man, I've been playing this song for over a year and your playing is tremendously better than my playing.

  • @marantz2010 : Thanks, but keep at it. It was my personal mountaintop! =)

  • very, very well done

  • @lulydog1 : Thank you very much! =)

  • you completely nailed it. that tone and the playing, Im jealous! chris squier is the only I can really put up playing with a pick

  • @NapoleanXV : Thanks! =D

  • DUDE, totally nailed that, great sound, what is you set-up / harware?

  • @jcmclovin77388 : Thanks! My amp is a GK Backline 115 Combo, miked with a SM57. The RIC is a 73 model 4001S.

  • you brought my attention to yes. thanks

  • @mittellos : That's great! Glad I could help. =)

  • Your stratocaster fits with the wall.... No, but, seriously, great job! I really don't know where I could buy a good rick bass, other than on eBay... have any suggestions?

  • @alexis940216 : That, or scan Craigslist in your city and surrounding cities. GuitarCenter has a "Used" site that may also have a fair deal, and they would ship. Good luck! =)

  • outstanding.

  • Great job, great tone! I will be listening to this over and over again. :)

  • Excellent!!

I have A Ric like that '76 i think it is.

Ive listened to Fragile over 1000 times.
