  • metal is fuckt with garbage like this

  • what tuning is this guy in

  • the noise gate on his lapel mic is pissing me the hell off...

  • i love how he doesnt know a MASSIVE amount about scales ad theory but he just feels the music..atually like me..

  • Djent is not a genre. Also, whats up with the gate on his vocal mic?

  • Browwrrr brrnt burr dee durr browwrrr weedurrnnerrr wennerdennerrr

  • Just like Djent, the "d" in Dubstep is silent.

  • dude says it sounds like korn.... lol

  • What is the intro song???

  • @InsanityType66 Buttersnips

  • 7 string guitars existed long ago, they were 7 string aqustic guitars.

  • i dont know why Djent is a new genre.... that palm muted sound existed long ago....damn djent..

  • guitar?

  • Sounds a bit like Korn.

  • just because djent and dubstep both start with a "d" doesn't make them similar or comparable.

  • So much hate in all these comments...

  • So much hate in all these comments...

  • "THIS ISN'T GOOD CUZ IT'S NOT DREAM THEATER."

That's all I'm seeing here. Periphery has some really good riffs, just because they don't use every scale, note, and time signature known to man doesn't make it bad at all. Also, not bashing Dream Theater, I love Dream Theater.

  • hey misha, two words for you for every real hardcore music fan. FUCK. YOU.

  • @sabiankid11 cause he has talent?

  • to all you people arguing that this isnt musically correct, just because it isnt in the major scale doesnt make it not correct, alot of periphey stuff is altered jazz scales

  • I prefer misha's tone with the bareknuckle aftermaths...

  • Oh my god... that tone is massive!

  • I love his tone! It's very original!

  • lol 1:40 thats it right there ... i didnt catch it

  • The people hating here clearly have not heard this song. If they had, they wouldn't say that there are no melodies and interesting chords.

  • Is there a gate on the audio in this video? His voice like cuts in and out at the beginning and end of sentences.

  • @Route8Productions I think it might be a Decimator Pedal or something, very annoying! :C

  • this video about the bends. it is turkish scale. also known as the 24 note scale.

He uses awesome scales without knowing it. Because awesome comes natural.

  • its hilarious how he tries to explain these wonky ass riffs

jkz hes actually really good its just that metal is like the blues, it really cant be taught

  • 2:08 "I don't know if that's a particular scale or not.." God I love that Guitar World has somebody good doing lessons and columns that isn't a theory wizard...

  • What kind of guitar is that? o.o

  • @venpresath

    Bernie Rico Jr.

  • @njegos88 those jokes only apply to good guitarists or chuck norris

  • @njegos88 ...yes, as it's played on just one string. Would be strange if he needed 2.

  • @njegos88 Doubt it. He can't even learn another scale. All he plays is pentatonic/blues.

  • reverb?

  • Guitar World can't fucking count haha

  • I dont understand why is drop tuning so popular it's like bands today are more focused on how low they can sound and everything else is forgotten . like good solo's maybe a little blues influence to give it a nice groove .Is sounding as low as you can without sounding muddy really what people are into?

  • Who tried to find 4# 3# 2# and 1#? :(

  • Tosin abasi and misha mansoor are responsible for so many bad guitarists switching to 7 and 8 string guitars.

Tosin is responisble for me using only jazz picks. :P

  • @Jamsessionroom1337 reporting to be one. Despite it being a choice over using a bass guitar and guitar at the same time.

Either way, multirange guitars are great especially if you do octave tappings. (string skipping to start next octave ect. Guthrie govan shows it in some tutorials i think.)

Still need to get my guitar tough, agile semi custom, will get it around july or something.

  • @LeapingDodo I didn't say there were bad, they are great. It's just some kids follow fads instead of what they should be following, what they like themselves.

Good luck on your seven string dude.

  • @Jamsessionroom1337 just a bit of a joke ;)

    Also, it is a 8 string ;P

I'm a tosin fanboy... well i am planning to use the same tuning. For around the same reasons as him (extended chord range V, I on barre chords.)

  • @Jamsessionroom1337 looking at that comment and being all like "yep, that's directed at me" XD

  • @Jamsessionroom1337 jazzz picksss....only way to go

  • that tone is sex

  • GNARLY guitar

  • @BrothersCinco It's a Bernie Rico Jr. He makes guitars out of california. Definitely buying one this year.

  • For the record, Meshuggah love these guys and "djent" and consider it all a brotherhood. Pitty the fans have a stick up their ass about it.

  • What a bunch of holier than thou whinging bitches on this thread.

People should spend more energy on things that they like rather than bitching about styles they don't like.

  • 3:20 So much more life "Facial expression says it all" lmfaoo

  • Oh so that's how he WEARS his strap!

  • Norah Jones' half brother..

  • what an ugly tone

  • You're an asshole Misha. I asked you how you write songs in person and I did NOT get this kind of explanation. You said you were figuring it out yourself. I hate and love you.

  • 2:00 "That gives it that sort of bouncy feel i feel like"

  • Dat headstock...

  • @keithpwns Oh but I can and I will. Don't like it? Well fuck you, I don't care.

  • 1:59 "Bouncy feel, I feel like"

  • Comment removed

  • I want his guitar! seven string, natural wood color, awesome looking headstock, and the fact that its a bernie rico jr. !

  • What kind of Guitar is he using?

  • @Battlehearten175 His own Bernie Rico custom

  • I wish guitar world would stop adding reverb where it isnt needed.

  • Love how 90% of crap djent is all like this. Meshugga man, this shit sucks. And I'm not even into Djent.

  • @Overture2152 amen. if it weren't for meshuggah all these fucks who think they make good music wouldn't exist...the world would be a better place if meshuggah was still underground

  • @sabiankid11 agreed, It's stupid. These guys and other bands like them think they make interesting stuff when really all it is, is: Chug 7th+ sting, bend higher string, chug low string, do weird chord. Rinse and repeat, then after 20 times add an unoriginal clean part and then robotic solo. Periphery is probably the worst offender of this. This song isn't at all catchy, or good for that matter. How they got popular I will never understand.

  • @Overture2152 You have a serious case of "Stop liking what I dont like".

  • @pstlpwn SO? Like I give a shit what you like. I think this is shit. Plain and simple, you don't like what I got to say? Don't care, fuck you. And Fuck off.

  • @Overture2152 I never said I enjoyed it. Personally, I think Djent is the dubstep of heavy music. I also never said I didnt like what you had to say, you certainly make a good argument.

  • @pstlpwn "I think Djent is the dubstep of heavy music." what? in what sense?

  • @Dismal626 its' a trend genre so u get a load of wankers in it and lot of shit music despite the fact in essence it is good. Also Djent derived from Meshuggha (a pretty heavy band) and now is pretty commercial sounding, the same happened with Dubstep. Both also do often have vocals but very often have a far bigger focus on the instrumental passages

  • @pstlpwn In that djent is good but very trendy so you get a lot of crap mixed in with it?

  • @rwfsmith hit the nail on the head, my friend.

  • @Overture2152

lol mad, if you don't like it, then don't go to a video featuring it

  • @Overture2152 LOL. umad?

  • @TheRaksoKazcrab And why are you an idiot?

  • @Overture2152 Dude here's the thing, I see you're a musician aswell, and I can tell you rightnow if you talk to people like this, you won't go anywhere in the music world.

  • @Overture2152 Obviously you haven't heard his solo in Racecar and in Jetpacks was Yes. The solos aren't robotic at all. Looking at your profile I can see that you have a different taste of music. Why the fuck are you even on this video? Just read the lyrics for Blood Stain Child's song Electricity. I tried listening to it, but the whole DDR style keyboards threw me off. If you like random big boy words being sung over keyboards and power chords, then go for it man. I'll stick with robotic solos.

  • @carlresmondo lol You obviously are new here. Honestly shut up, Electricity isn't the only song by BSC, I like that album but it was very repetitive but then again it's trance mixed with metal. Anyway I'd rather listen to bands with more musical structure than this shit. Dream Theater, Above Symmetry, Anthriel, Pagan's mind, coB, Symphony X, etc. the list goes on. Don't try to justify poor songwriting and playing as music. This is honestly the dubstep of metal.

  • @Overture2152 You mentioned two good bands. You just called this the dubstep of metal, but you listen to overly repetitive songs with trance put in them? I would rather be listening to this then shitty sounding keyboard arpeggios played over and over. You're obviously new here.

  • @sabiankid11 oh and you can't forget that most of these guys have shitty vocals.

  • great to see a seven string lesson, this song rocks

  • Dude! What's with delay!?

  • Not sure if influenced by Meshuggah, or just copy-cat.

  • @DomasBanevicius obviously influenced.. all djent is

  • you damn kids and your metal that all sounds like that band mashoogy or whatever

  • @DiluteCo Trolololo

  • @DiluteCo 10/10

  • Fuck man, I want that tone without spending the money on an AxeFx.

  • @superkid5647isweird dont we all haha

  • @superkid5647isweird As far as I know, it's worth every penny. I should be getting my Axe II coupon soon, I'm so fucking excited, I don't even care about dropping $2600 haha

  • this video got less click than Black Veil Brides lesson -.- wtf?

  • Explaining a riff without any knowledge of music theory is totally pointless.

  • @amjan Because every riff in history requires an in depth knowledge of polyrhythms and sectsies....

  • this sort'of ....like .....djent

  • in this column we are going to be cooking a madras

  • sum 41?

  • i dunno but he looked like one of those characters in 3 idiots .. yes a bollywood film.

  • jesus, who the fuck edited this video? it's like there is a noise gate on his voice.

  • ja ja jada ja ja da ja Djenty

  • Periphery love gates so much they even gated his voice-over lol

  • intro song: Periphery - Buttersnips

  • i have watched the djent set SOOO many times

  • His face is like Apoo mixed with Chief Wiggum.

  • what guitar is he playing?

  • @affenkind5 Bernie Rico Jr Custom

  • Buttersnips

  • @Jazzymood1980 practice makes perfect.

  • What guitar is that????

  • @InsanityType66 BC rich

  • @Facepalm66 your name is pretty spot on. its not a BC Rich

  • @Facepalm66 It's a Bernie Rico i belive

  • The opening song to this vid is out of control!

  • Would it be gay if I said I love you?

  • i get it...its a guitar magazine.....but stop using pedals on peoples voices....i dont need to hear Misha's voice with a decimator in front of it -_-

  • @leetsmithownsu : Hahhahahaha

  • misha you are awesome, one of my guitar heros, along with vai :D

  • I wonder what processing his voice is going through. Compressor and noise-gate at least.

  • @Rahul82219 i think theres some heavy reverb too, and i think his compression is pretty light, thats what i hear, and yeah, he has a boss noisegate whatever it is :P

  • misha mansoor: accidental founder of the nonatonic diminished scale

  • this riff doesn't sound like a meshuggah riff to you?come on.

  • @AtanasovPetar Not at all mate.

  • @FISHFACEmatt Has Meshuggah feel to it and the same kind of bends like in Meshuggah-Rational gaze.

  • Like Um - Part 2

  • Comment removed

  • If anyone calls djent anything but a genre they are kidding themselves. Picking technique? Please. Alternate picking is a picking technique. Djent is a genre, whether you like it or not. I happen to not like it very much because every guy with a Pod is doing the same fucking thing. I'm sure there will be some monster djent band to come by and change all the fucking copy cats out there, but for right now it's pretty stagnant.

  • @lawlz01 I agree 100%. Same with the whole "post-black metal"/"blackgaze" scene that's come into popularity recent, bands that are pretty much doing their damndest to ripoff Alcest and Amesoeurs, while having no idea what it means to actually write real black metal or real shoegaze.

  • "Well, I don't really know what else to say. I'll just keep reminding everyone that I'm bending and using this picking style to create riffs that I crafted into a song." There is no way I could put this concept into any more detail than Misha is. Props.

  • djent guitar is really similer to jazz guitar. nice

  • sweet....djent...

  • That guitar is absolutely beautiful :O

  • @Maason15666 yup that's right thanks!

  • what is the guitar he is using, anyone know?

  • @TheTurk92 It's a Bernie Rico Jr. I believe.

  • @TheTurk92 its his custom made bernie rico jr 7 string

  • question for anyone out there

say i make a riff just messing around how do i figure out what time signature i'm playing in? when i go to put it in guitar pro which is auto 4/4 my stuff always looses something and never has the original 'flavor' that i give when playing it myself. I understand what time sig is but i just need to know how to label a time sig am i making any sense? xD

  • @gmoney101392 things in gp wont have the original 'flavor' because its a computer simulating the accents and stuff; ofc that's provided you haven't made mistake with the tabbing. if it is indeed an issue with the tabbing, try singing the riff while clapping your hands; then just work it out :) also depending on the song your riff may or may not fit into the 4/4, for example lots of messhugah drums are in 4/4 but the guitars aren't, BUT you still write it out in 4/4; hope i answered your question

  • What bridge pickup is he using? Anyone know. Im gonna start playing djent styles on a 6 string... ANy string thickness you guys recommend.

  • @ZorakSpaceGhost Bare Knuckle Aftermath

  • @wowaccpass Wow, never heard of these pickups before- just checked them out online, they sound sick!!!

  • @halifaxskater Yes, indeed, they are awesome!

  • @ZorakSpaceGhost imo something mediumish gauge, usually when i play this kinda stuff i dont want the strings to be too thin otherwise they wobble around and you cant control them, but at the same time when they're too thick you won't be able to pick as hard and make the "snapping" sound important in djent, if that makes sense; but its up to you really just experiment and record yourself playing diff gauges and see which one sounds most djenty but like i said imo something medium is nice

  • @ZorakSpaceGhost in this video he's using dimarzios crunch lab/ liquifire. he also uses the bareknuckle aftermath set.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa amazing guitar ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • this dude has some serious musical talent :P

  • song?titel?

  • @morrishopmans pay attention

  • @morrishopmans

    Icarus Lives!

  • @morrishopmans Icarus Lives!

  • So can anyone tell me the full tuning?

  • @wetotheetotheztotheo Ab Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb - Low to high

  • @konsco What is the b? So is it just AEADGBE?

  • @wetotheetotheztotheo the b means flat. It could also be G# D# G# C# F# A# D#

  • @konsco tyvm

  • A genre is a typological construct that identifies a group of similar music that can be recognized by a general term. ie. Djent is a fucking genre.

  • Man, that guy can feel the beat ! that's my big flaw... I wish he could do a video where he can teaches us about how to count right, rhythmic syncopation, 3 against 4, stuff like that !

  • @Jazzymood1980

Hemiola! That's the name for 3 against 4. Really, how I've been taught, is not listen to anything else. Listen to only you, and get your beat down. THEN, start fitting it in with other tracks.

    And syncopation is just counting (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and, 1 2 3 2 2 3 3 2 3 4 2 3, 1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a, so on and so forth)

  • @Jazzymood1980 I don't think he even knows in his head what he's doing there

  • i REALLY like the way Misha sees the guitar as an instrument, and its different possibilities based not so much on theory, but rather on pure creativity. its all bout feeling and instincts.

really good player this guy is

  • i love the headstock of that guitar

  • Please excuse my stupidity, but what tuning is he playing in exactly?

  • @Bludhoundz8 the man said Ab "drop Ab to be specific"

On a 7 it would look something like this.

Ab Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb

if you have one of them sharps only tuners it would look something like...

    G# D# G# C# F# A# D#

  • @jacobgun Ah okay, thanks!

  • @jacobgun "if you have one of them sharps only tuners it would look something like..."

Just curious, what did you mean?

  • @NoaOno some tuners (specifically zoom products) for some time only had tuners that would read in sharps and not flats. examble: if i went half step from standard E it wouldn't read as Eb it would show up as D#.

  • @jacobgun OKAY! Never heard of ssuch a tuner.

Then only the word "them" should be replaced with "those" and it's grammaticly correct. That sentence looked wild!

  • bands that sound like this are for example Born Of Osiris,Veil Of Maya and stuff. Pretty cool stuff!

  • Does anyone know if that's a crunch lab 7 pick up he's using? As i'm thinking of getting one
