  • That was the best cartwheel in the whole Olympics! Lots of gymnasts just threw it away since it's such an easy element but she really took the time to do it with style and flair!

  • did she pull a jackson at 0:11-0:14?

  • I hate how now some coaches at nearby clubs to mine consider it "a waste of time and skill" to do a cartwheel or a handstand in elite gymnastics unless it's part of a mount. Even when it's done like that.

  • FUCKING BEAUTIFUL!

  • Use to have the biggest damn crush on her lol

  • John Tesh needs to SHUT THE FUCK UP~~!!!!

  • The overall style and flow was better than Shannon's, but she hopped on the landing.

  • crazy beautiful !!! very lovely !!!!

  • The Part at the Begginning When she is doing the Cartwheel..... The Guy who is talking talks about stuff we dont even care about! Thumbs up if you agree!

  • She was such a tiny little thing.. hard to believe she's a mom now!

  • I'd be happy just to have the bangs back. I realize that today it's important for girls to look like men, but it was nice pre-2002 +/- when girls looked like girls.

  • What a lovely routine

  • was 96 the last Games that they had compulsories?

  • @tmwalkerm yes, compilsories were retired after the 1996 olympics

  • That cartwheel was beautiful no one in the games that year did a better one just amazing

  • Comment removed

  • What score did she get?

  • 0:10 OMG shut up! Elfie's trying to enjoy the cartwheel!

  • I LOVE COMPULSORIES, best way to compare the gymnasts.

  • I miss the compulseries! And that routine is what I call gymnastics!

  • She is my gymnastics idol

    I love gymnastics

  • "iloveSUGARLAND88" said "you don't see gymnastics like that very much anymore". I haven't really followed gymnastics since 2002, but even so...is it really true ? Has the quality slipped backwards ? I always thought that it would always progressively get better, even if just a little bit at a time.

I love this routine; Dominique is always so beautiful to watch. And yes, there will never be another DM. Gymnastics peaked at 1996-2000...

  • @cairsahr well yes and no, difficulty improved but ececution has taken a step backwards

  • Such an amazing routine. I can't believe she did it so well and then took a step on the dismount!

  • she is smokin hot. i was in love with her back in the day!

  • wow!! what a beautiful rutine!! she is amazing!! you don't see gymnastics like that very much anymore...kind of disappointing. ):

  • I LOVE HER! and her blogs xD

  • Never thought I'd say this, but I almost wish they'd bring compulsories back. It had so much emphasis on presentation, perfection, flexibility that seems to be lost today...

  • best cartwheel i've ever seen....

  • The reason a cartweel is in the routine is because it's a compulsory routine, where everyone performs the same routine and it's a relatively easy routine. The optional routines are where you see the most difficult skills

  • well it was a complusory routine. they got rid of those after this olympics but thats pretty much what most complusory routines had. no one would ever do that in an optional routine

  • There used to be a compulsory round in gymnastics where every gymnast had to do the same "easy" routines but with as much style and grace as possible. From there they went to optionals to do the harder stuff.

  • This is the Team Compulsories-the Atlanta Olympics were the last time a required set of exercises had to be performed by all gymnasts to show their basic skill to the judges. If you watched the other videos here that are on autoplay surely you noticed the other gymnasts doing the same exact routines in this portion of the competition did you not? After Atlanta, Optionals have been performed ever since in both Team Prelims, and Team Finals.

  • I miss gymnastics being about art. Now its all about the tricks that you do.

  • Awesome dismount! Never seen that done before!

  • She is the best gymnast in the world. go domi...

  • how old is she here?

  • She was 14 here. :-)

  • Great routine, but y was it so different 2 her other beam routines?

  • compulsory routines are choreographed by the FIG, everyone had to do the same routine. They were simpler and consisted of just basic moves, because they were used to test their skills.

  • Oh, thanx.

  • OHHHH I WAS LIKE REALLY CONFUSED

  • Why was Dominique Moceanu the favorite in Atlanta...she was not as good as Miller or Dawes

  • She was the media favorite. Not necessarily the gymnastics experts' favorite

  • I'd say she's tied with Miller, I don't think Dawes is as good as either of them though

  • how did this routine get her into the event final?

  • because it is absolutely gorgeous and textbook!

  • Textbook? Including the bit where she nearly fell on the second handstand?

  • she didn't nearly fall, it was just a little fast. watch other routines from compulsories and they are not near as clean and well presented.

  • yeah, most of the other gymnasts in compulsories didn't even hit both handstands. This was one of the highlights of the compulsories along with Lilia and Shannon.

  • That "lil fall" actually made her handstand mosre aggresive and amazing to watch, she was fully extended and was not short and she fought for the hand stand, she could have fallen because she was so arched but the fact that she didn't is what made the style so awesome to look at.

  • Because they add the Optional and Compulsery routine together and her optional routine was PERFECTION!

  • Its compulsories their not suppose to do the big moves

  • the last time compulories were done were at the 1996 games. every gymnast had to do the same routine (aka compulsory) to demostrate the same ability.

  • If I remember correctly, Ludmilla Tourischeva designed this routine.

  • Somebody already mentioned this, pardon me. I didn't look back through all of the comments before posting.

  • Why are you bringing Korbut into this?

  • I was talking about Tourischeva, who choreographed this routine. It was meant to be a reply to another comment

  • She did indeed-and if you watch Ludmilla's beam routines from back in the '70's you can see she incorporated several of her own moves into the Atlanta compulsory beam.

  • She had the best cartwheel of the competition.

  • Seriously. Whether people like her form or not, her compulsory beam routine was one of the best.

  • her routine was amazing; she could have had the highest score had she held her spilt & handstand longer; plus stick her dismount. shannon's routine ROCKED!

  • i love her

  • dominique is amazing. the reason everyone liked her is because she is so graceful.

  • I don't get why everyone liked her. She was no where as good as Shannon

  • Everyone like dher becasue she was the youngest: she was the cutest...!

    I have to agree!

  • In my opinion, her beam was much nicer when she didn't have those stupid beam shoes that kept her from being able to point her feet.

  • Beautiful. I miss the compulsories. :-(

  • I siriusly think dominique moceanu does this routine the best shes greasfull flexible strong and she has great form she's the best I LOVE YOU dominique <3<3

  • this routine i think had beautiful toe point. that handstand scared me a little tho!

  • This was my favorite compulsory beam routine at these Olympics. Podkopayeva's floor was my favorite comulsory floor routine here (and all-time). I have not seen to many compulsory vault/bar routines to decide on those yet.

  • Podpkopayeva's compulsory floor exercise must have been a dream come true for her as she is a huge ballet fan! You could see that she had a sound training in the ballet-her routine was joyful and right up there for me with Daniela Silivas' comp. fx from 1988. They made those routines their own. :)

  • These are my top 4 favorite balletic routines: Oksana Omelianchik's 1985- 1986, Llilia Podkopayeva's 1996, Kathy Johnson's 1078, and Irina Baraksanova's 1984. Just exquisite dancers :)

  • I've never seen Baraksanova's (I'll have to check that out right away!) the other two of course are a dream to watch. I'm so greatful to Youtube and all the posters who uploaded these wonderful, classic performances! :)

  • I've always wondered where they get those videos from, but I'm always so happy that they do.

  • I wish John Tesh would have shut up about MRI's during Moceanu's set. Elfi tried to point out Dominique's great form on her cartwheel and he just kept right on talking poop about MRI's like we all needed an update on her medical reports.

  • i miss compulsories!

  • i don't

  • You should

  • why?

  • Because now most gymnasts have gross form and just difficulty.

  • Well said. :)Gimme those old time compulsories. They were good enough for me. :)

  • I hear you. I would rather watch every single compulsory routine from 1976-1996 than robots like Shawn Johnson or Vanessa Ferrari.

  • Omigosh totally! I like Shawn she seems like a very sweet kid-but her gymnastics...that is NOT 'artistic' gymnastics. Vanessa Ferrari also a lovely person..but don't get me started on her 'gymnastics' lol! The sport is called Artistic Gymnastics. They may as well change the name since they've made some gawd-awful changes already to the sport. Just call it Power Gymnastics or something. Because it hasn't looked artistic looking at most gymnasts these days in many a year. :(

  • Shawn smile is very cute (to me) but she is so unflexible and her 'dance' is really.... weird. Vanessa's gymnastics is surely not as nice as she is, LOL. And don't et me started on gymnasts like Jana Bieger!

  • i remember wanting to learn the compulsories that they did! they were so cool and i think that they bring back some of the "form" requirement of gymnastics. plus, vanessa ferrari would suck at them!

  • they need to be back!

  • that cartwheel was beautiful. i have been able to do one on beam for a while but i can't do it like that. i tried at gym but i can only start with my leg lifted and facing the start, not end like that

  • WOW! That was great and everything was perfect. I really like the mount, I am going to try it tonight at gym. LOL! :)

  • That's why athletes today should consider themselves lucky. Most of them would never make this routine.

  • why this routine is easier that the other one?

  • This routine is easier because compulsories. It is all about form and dance. It is not about hard core skills.

  • It is team compulsories..

Every member of each team has the same routine.

It is based on form, structure, and presentation.

They took it out of the olympics though.

  • why doesnt she have a series? do they not have that in the compulseries?

  • That was the compulsory routine at the time. I think it was composed by the Ukrainians, in particular Tourischeva. Maybe that was another Olympics.

  • i love how the floor music goes with her beam. lol

  • That's a hard ass fucking compulsory!!!!

  • It was composed by the Ukrainians I think-and Ludmilla Tourischeva the 1972 Olympic Champion had alot of input. I think I see a Ludmilla move or two in this exercise judging from old footage of Tourischeva on beam.

  • She scored 9.687 for this routine.

  • And her 9.687 ranked her third on the balance beam after the compulsories, behind Shannon Miller, the eventual champion, at 9.737, and Lilia Podkopayeva at 9.700. Dominique was famous for having one of the best cartwheels on the compulsory beam exercise.

  • Wow. That means that without the hop on the landing Dominique would have scored 9.787 and been in first place on beam after compulsories! :)

  • Amazing precision and calm, controlled demeanor for a 14-year-old. Especially considering her injury that had limited her leading up to the Olympics.

  • I liked Alexandra Marinescu, Lilia Podkopayeva, and Dominique Moceanu best on beam compulsories in 1996.

  • Shannon Miller was by far the best!

  • That is your opinion and I respect it. Shannon was of course up there but to me the All Around Champion Podkopaeva, Marinescu and Moceanu had the top three compulsorie beams.

  • SHE IS GREAT ARE YOU KIDDING????????

  • yeah she's 4 foot 7 here and looks like a man. riiight. you obviously have no idea what gymnastics is like at all. her hands are gorgeous, she has gorgeous form. learn something about the sport before you make stupid comments.

  • Dude, what the fuck? She is still a little girl here and has not developed yet. She really blossomed when she hit 16. But nevertheless, she had great form and I personally loved her body type when she was younger.

  • When girls start gymnastics at a very young age, their breasts do not develop as other girls' would who don't take gymnastics. When they stop training immensely they grow into a more full, 'feminine' body if you will.

  • i think she had 9.812 in this routine, the best note in the qualification

  • no miller had a higher score

  • she scored 9.687 i think, good routine, love the cartwheel, miller and huillan had the best compulsories on beam in my eyes, lush form

  • My favourite American gynmast ever, she was beautiful to watch. Such wonderful poise and timing.

  • can somebody tell me that score gave to this exercise please?

  • i miss the compulsories...it seperated those who had great form, flexibility, and style from those who just knew how to do trix.

  • she and nadia are my favorite gymnasts.

  • what do you mean, old routines give hints to kiling the competition?

  • kalibeast, yes, holding the leg is a standout skill.

funny how studying the old routines gives so many hints to just kiling in competition today.

  • Although she never truly got the chance to realize her potential, she was still an amazing gymnast. Look at that beam routine... better style and technique than almost everyone in Atlanta, and she was 4 or 5 years younger than many of them.

  • Um, you become a "champion" when you win first place. Thus, Dominique is a "champion" because she won 94 Jr. Nationals, 95 Sr. Nationals, the Olympic gold with the team (where 7 of her 8 scores counted toward the team total), and the Goodwill Games, along with a myriad of other smaller competitions. She also did last in high-level elite competition from 1993 to 2000, with only injuries and a growth spurt slowing her down. If that's not longevity, I don't know what is.

  • how she ever was comsidered a "champion" i will never understand. No longevity wutsoever...whenever she was needed to perform she just didnt deliver

  • She also made a "comeback" last year, you can see videos of her from the US Classic from 2006! 10 years!
