  • Is there a 30 year time delay on his television?

  • Still a comedian. Not a very funny one. Your pictures are undoutably art of some description - to you, but someone poncing about on stage trying to make people laugh is a performer not an artist. I was at different times a performance artist and actor. Art and performance are two different things, I wouldn't consider acting an art it's a craft whereas performance art is entirely different and in the pursuit of making an artistic statement.

  • @twolunches Fuck off.

  • @bennyboyjones I'm trying to fuck off but I just can't.

  • @twolunches

And not a single shit was given.

  • Artistic and artform belong to art. Comedy is not an artform, it is comedy plain and simple.

  • @twolunches

Art is completely and utterly subjective, and anyone who tells you otherwise, including yourself, can fuck off. I could take a picture of the most recent shit I took, and put it up on my wall, and who the hell are you to tell me thats not art. You have the right to not be artistically moved by it, but art, by its definition, is subjective. The second it isnt, is the second it stops being art. So you see, comedy can be art. Not that it is necessarily, but it can be.

  • @twolunches Ridiculous.

  • "the hardest job in the word" lol

  • @numberman52 ..and hes not very good at it too!

  • Stewart Lee def a fan of Groucho Marx .

  • Margaret Cho certainly disliked this.

  • yeah, this is pretty weak for Stewart Lee.

  • stewart lee's act: repeating the same joke over and over

  • @skinwalkerxxx and the problem being,it wasn't funny the first time

  • @MrCassavius exactly

  • Louis CK, Maria Bamford, Patton Oswalt, Paul F Tompkins, Andy Daly, Zach Galifianakis, Todd Glass, Jen Kirkman, Patrice O'Neal, David Cross, Dana Gould, Tig Notaro. If there are any comics here in the UK even half as good as those yanks, please let me know, I'd be delighted. I'll spot you Sarah Millican, Ross Noble, Nina Conti and this fella.

  • @detectiveschitz I was gonna say Dylan Moran, but he's Irish, so never mind.

    Eddie Izzard?

  • WAAAAY funnier than Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Bill Cosby, Louis Ck, Jerry Seinfeld, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, and Sam Kinison combined.

  • @flourbiscuit76 thats a crazy opinion. are you stewart lees mother?

  • @flourbiscuit76 somewhat disagree

  • @flourbiscuit76

I'll assume that comment was a joke intended to rile up Americans.

  • @garethac81 No I am American and I thought my sarcasm was obvious.

  • @flourbiscuit76 If george carlin wasn't in there, i wouldn't have thought you're an idiot.

  • This guy reminds me of what Bigfoot must look like if he had all his hair shaved off.

  • ....these open mic nights really throw up some shit comedians.

  • larry David has never said that!.

  • @joebstarsurfer no David say his parents are Jewish and that's why he is miserable

  • My mother was a nutritionist and my father was a sex-ed teacher, so when I see either food or a strap-on I know exactly whether to eat it or shove it up my ass.

  • Bill Hicks and Stewart Lee , both genius

  • I'm British and I find American comedians are much much funnier. Comedians here might make me chuckle, but the American ones make me laugh out loud.

  • @JesterUK2

You can get that fixed on the NHS I think.

  • @asubjectiveopinion

I know. But I've bee on the waiting list for 8 years.

  • I did not know that Lithuanians, Spaniards, and Irishmen like to stick phallic food items up their ass.

  • Comment removed

  • And then on both sides of the pond, the comics who bitch about their wives.

  • Hey! My mom has Pica disorder, and my Dad was a proctologist. So when I see a supposotory, I don't know whether to eat it or shove it up my ass!

  • @slowmonkey156 well played hehe

  • @slowmonkey156 Genius!

  • My Mum's from Salisbury and my Dad's from Epsom so when I see an item associated with either of those two areas I don't know whether to eat it or shove it up my ass.

  • will you 2 fags underneath stop arguing,go bum each other it's probably sexual tension

  • Stewart Lee isn't anti american, he likes to demolish national-pride & national stereotypes but its really hard to get that from just hearing one joke, you really have to see the whole set. He usually picks apart his own jokes as part of the act and explains it all. When you see short clips on here its momentously out of context.

Watch one of his DVDs, you'll see he hates bigotry, racism, stereotyping etc.

As a big Stewart Lee fan I apologise to the amercans on here, i can see why this offends.

  • pretty much described carlos mencia there. that mexican talks about how people are strung up on race, then proceeds to make his entire 2 hour standup about race

  • It might not be a great era for American stand ups, but the greatest ever, and I believe many Brits would agree--is the late, great Bill Hicks. If you don't know Bill, find him on YouTube--he was sheer genius.

  • @corky246 I agree, Bill Hicks was a special one. For comparison: His nonchalance was melded with a charm and connection with the audience that the likes of George Carlin didn't have. Both great comedians and public speakers but Hicks leaves you with a feeling of commonality that pleases more than Carlin's apathy.

  • @corky246

Bill Hicks, so beloved that I named my cat "Hicks" after him.

This video ends immediately before a cutaway sketch on the career and death of fictional comedian Dill Spinks, including his banned material on the "Lenoman" Show..

Can you guess who it was based on?

  • My mother was elton john, and my father was david furnish, so when I see a penis, I don't know whether to eat it, or shove it up my ass.

  • @UrsineBenn excellent

  • It's weird. For some reason I can't stand the guy, and yet I love the material he comes out with. Anyone else feel that way?

  • Maybe I'm missing a level of irony here, but I have noticed far more British comedians doing this than Americans. Lenny Henry, Gina Yashere, Andi Osho, and so on and so forth, all do the exact same routine: "My mother was Nigerian- I'm sure you all know what THAT's like, predominantly white audience!- and she would say funny things!" Cue endless racially dubious African accent impressions.

  • @Pedgerow You're right, the problem doesn't just lie with American comedians. Obviously there are many American comedians that are geniuses, but Stewart is not only making fun of the ones that do this kind of joke, he is making fun of the complaining about it too by deliberately generalizing towards Americans.

  • I’m glad Stewart lee did this act because I have thought for a long time that American stand up is obsessed with race. I don’t always agree with everything Stewart Lee says but I do think he is very funny and very clever.

  • America sucks.

  • Im an american stand up and i think stuart lee is absolutely hilarious. I also think that the american comedy scene is 90% lame, unoriginal, unfunny hack shit.

  • @FullyAutoMathmatics Unfortunately, you're right, but that's okay because 90% of our comedy scene (at least) is lame, unfunny, unoriginal hack shit.

  • i understand the irony and sarcasm and all that, i just didnt think it was funny

  • @correll28 you clearly have a shit sense of humour

  • @cuchulainn187 na im just not a british uppity jerkoff

  • @correll28 correct. you're a dumb american who's intelligence level only permits him to laugh at broad humour, very loud comedians and people falling over. I've seen your type before.

  • @cuchulainn187 im a dumb american who doesnt think this joke took any thinking at all yo do, wasnt deliverd well at all and just wasnt funny. ricky gervais is funny, this guy isnt. ims sorry that ruins your life. you havent seen my type before because you dont know what type i am. this just wasnt funny, period. im sorry mr elitist brit.

  • @cuchulainn187 congrats on continuing the sterotype of brits who are ignorant and think anything they do is better, even when it isnt anything good at all.

  • @correll28 And congradulate yourself while you're at it for fulfilling your own stereotype aswell.

  • @cuchulainn187 what sterotype? the sterotype of not liking when people tell me im stupid and tell me my entire country is stupid because i dont think a joke is funny? face it- this guy isnt funny, youre a moron (who cant spell) and you have done nothing but prove how sad of a person you are. food for thought...just because a joke is ironic and dry doesnt make it funny. this fits in that category, elitist jackass

  • @correll28 No, your entire country is not stupid, however people like you ARE. Your inability to laugh at yourself your pathetic arrogance disguised as apathy & your pathetic need to comment on a video of one of the greatest comedians of our generation just to say it's not funny are ALL stereotypical traits of YOUR type of American There many many Americans who are intelligent, humble & quick witted. You are the FamilyGuy type who needs to be repeatedly slapped in the face with a joke

  • @cuchulainn187 this joke isnt funny, but the fact that you keep referring to what 'type' i am is very laughable. i dont like family guy or any show like that nonsense, but because i dont think this is funny you are convinced i am? yu know nothing about my 'type' or intelligence. thats the difference between you and i. you claim to know what i enjoy, but i KNOW that you are indeed a jackass.

  • @correll28 the fact that i dont find this funny says nothing about me except that i didnt laugh. there are infinite ways you could make fun of amercans and ive seen numerous comedians from all over the world make me laugh at it. this joke-i didnt know whether to eat it or shove t up my ass-is tasteless slapstick humor that you keep referring me to be a fan of. pretty ironic, actually. you have no idea who i am or what im like, but im sorry that i dont share your opinions...moron.

  • @correll28 The fact that you felt compelled to post hate here & then argue with a stranger on the internet about it says more about you than me kid. you inferred a shitload from my views on you and decided i was an anti american brit. the fact im married to an american & am actually irish seems to have cemented my view on your 'type'. opinionated, tasteless, classless bell end who cannot vwin arguments with intelligence so instead tries to win it by saying it louder other person.

  • @cuchulainn187 you are a total moron. YOU were saying the anti american statements. YOU were saying hateful things. YOU were the one pretending to know me. YOU are a pathetic person, telling me that i am the one insulting YOU because i cant argue? very funny. you have been doing nothing but insult the entire time for god knows what reason. seriously, you may have mental problems.

  • @correll28 really? you're still on this? you're arrogant, ignorant & petty and you aparently have no self-awareness. lol I'll let you have the last word kid, you seem to crave it more than me. nighty night

  • High-Larious.

  • I don't why but when he said senseless high school massacre, I thought he was talking about slasher movies that kill of high schoolers by the dozen. Took me a second to realize he meant school shootings.

  • My mother was French and my father was Welsh, so when I see a sheep I don't know whether to set it alight or shove me up its ass.

  • i love to see brits spending so much time bashing americans. never gets old..

  • @maroonoasis Nobody does it better than Americans though.

  • Oh sorry that was wrong.

  • amazingly, Stewart Lee is an anagram of Less Was More. Woh!

  • Comment removed

  • My dad's from Essex, and my mum's from Scotland, so when I see a Ford Capri, I don't know whether to eat it, or shove it up my ass.

  • @killcaptainstupid or shag a haggis on the back seat?! :-)

  • his American accent sounds like the Canadian lead singer of Skid Row, Sebastian Bach.

  • Nice barbed irony from Lee as usual. Personally I tire of people just saying motherfucker 14 times a minute for comic effect.

  • I wonder what Stewart would think of Emo Phillips.

  • I get that he's generalizing... this doesn't apply to the best comedians in the business. But uh... I've never seen what he's referencing and I've really only watched American comedians until the last maybe 5 years or so. Where did he find the hacks he's mocking? There's a reason most comedians don't make it to television. This is like a professional baseball player mocking tee-ballers for their lack of skill... which is actually fairly funny... okay, complaint withdrawn.

  • The only decent American stand-up was Bill Hicks.

  • @AnthemsToTheWelkin George Carlin.

  • Greatest stand up ever - if you get the chance to see him live go , and dont heckle unless you are good.

  • Also, if Comedy Central were not a bag of idiots, Dave Chappelle would still be on, and probably the best stuff ever made. All that said, it is definitely nice to hear standup from outside of America.

  • The problem with American standup is that everyone has been trying to do Richard Pryor for too long. Eddie, a few others, finally with Dave Chappelle imo, it has all been done, and done to perfection. Time for us to find a new way to present things. It is hard because we still relate to this point of view, so things will need to shift before it finds a new voice with their own style.

  • @CautionCU This is very true.

Another trend I notice is comedy that consists of getting indignant/angry about how CRAZY and RIDICULOUS certain people, things, or aspects of society are. Dane Cook is an example of this. "You know how X does Y? WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?!"

  • @BenkaiDebussy I've also observed an amount of observation in observational comedy.

  • @Maderlock There's plenty of good observational comedy. It doesn't have to consist of just ranting about how ridiculous/wacky something is. Many stand-up comics will make jokes very similar to the generic one I mentioned in my comment. Or indignant, angry ones that consist of ranting about something in society that many people find irritating. Generally speaking, comedy that consists of saying things the audience agrees with in an exaggerated tone is bad (but successful!).

  • @Maderlock

There's bucket loads of the stuff at The London Observatory in Greenwich, I've observed, while on observational duties for The Observer...

  • When i was about 14 I discovered Lee and Herring. I'm now 26 and their comedy is still a massive part of my life, probably more so than ever, now with twitter / youtube / podcasting / blogs. Great.

  • 3 names - carlin, stanhope, hicks

  • @piccollo21 did you read the post I was replying to? Turn off the email alerts dude, back away from the keyboard...let it go...

  • I'm completely baffled by the people who take Stewart Lee's material at face value. Maybe it's the complexity of his style; I've never known another comedian to use so many layers of irony, sarcasm, subtleties, and genuine comic insight as him. People who like him I find tend to be the people who get that right from the off and people who hate him get confused along the way. I can only recommend watching a few of his full-length shows before criticising him, because they're masterpieces.

  • @evilrolo It's just Stewart Lee working two crowds simultaneously.

  • @evilrolo yeah and theres a load of snooty knobs like yourself

  • @BlunderCats NO U

  • @evilrolo biting

  • @BlunderCats Thanks I practised loads :)

  • @evilrolo well done, now you can pop on a jumper, read the guardian and feel superior adrian mole

  • @BlunderCats And you can go back to doing your stand up that isn't very good :/

  • @evilrolo yeah well others disagree while youve done nothing

  • @BlunderCats Yeah? Well, my opinion is better and you're a knob >:l (see what I'm doing here? I'm acting like my opinion is all that matters and launching an ad hominem attack, whilst in truth most opinions are valid provided they're well-presented/thought out. You don't know what I've done; I'm just a stranger on youtube, and yet you've judged me and attacked me for doing just that to you, which is a bit hypocritical tbh. I don't really mean it, just don't call me a knob for having opinions.)

  • @ThatBobbsyGuy sorry is this evilrolo? if so rather than crying like a bitch why dont you just put forward something youve tried at?i think Franticalmagic was hinting at something below. because stewart lee is perceived, and quite fairly, as an intellectual, people like you associate themselves with him so that they can feel like an intellectual and superior to others. the truth is youre too unimaginative and a coward to do anything yourself

  • @BlunderCats Once again, you've assumed something you can't know. You've reasoned that just because I've made a comment in defence of this routine, I'm some kind of 'intellectual' try-hard who looks at this like modern art and wanks with the Guardian. I don't read the Guardian. I don't read very much at all really, I'm quite unlearned and lazy. I'm not sure who's argument that's in favour of, tbh. I don't really feel that superior, and think it's unfair to say I do. Also you, sir, are the bitch.

  • @evilrolo I like your thinking. Form a cult and i'll pay to join it.

  • @evilrolo nah you absolutely are. not sure how many 'unlearned' people would accuse someone of making an ad hominem attack and you cant even imagine doing something interesting, do you just look at sneer at others while doing nothing yourself? you would be more persuasive if you actually responded to what im trying to say rather than just evading it

  • @BlunderCats I've not sneered at anyone. You're the one that started this by calling me a knob, and all I'd done is say in my experience a lot of people don't get that Stewart is being ironic sometimes - that's not a statement that divides anyone intellectually, it's just a lot of people do, in my experience, think he's being serious. I might have overdressed the comment, but doesn't really say much about how clever I am/think I am/want people to think I am. I mean, what's your point?....

  • @evilrolo nah thats not what you were saying. you were saying that they didnt get the irony, sarcasm, subtleties, and genuine comic insight while you can that its not even possible that they just find him a bit dry and not that funny

  • @BlunderCats ...that I AM an intellectual? - all right then, thanks for the compliment, I suppose. And as for the second point, how do you know what I've 'put out there?'. I'm an anonymous character, and I'm not going to cheapen anything I may/may not have done by going 'check out my vids on youtube guyzzz xxx'. I'm not criticising you, and where it seems like I have, I'm just trying to make a point. Because you're the one who seems to be avoiding what I'm saying...

  • @evilrolo nah not an intellectual just a bit false and how would that be cheapening it? and if im evading then its just because ive misunderstood because all you seem to be churning out cliches and back peddling

  • @BlunderCats ...and to be honest I don't really know why you're riding this so fucking hard. So I don't have anything out there that I chose to show off - I can't give an opinion on something? Just because you have done a bit of stand up, you CAN sneer and I cant? You're either the most persistent troll, in which case I tip my hat sir, or you're just a bit arrogant. Or I've misunderstood. Anyway, I'll happily continue this debate, but it's probably getting on people's tits by now.

  • @evilrolo and you not having done anything doesnt mean you cant have an opinion it just means that any opinion you do have is based on no experience and pretty much worthless. and i didnt even bring up my stand, you just had a dig at it and just to be clear i dont think its amazing but i am proud of being able to prepare some material and actually get up on stage in a club, do a routine and have people laugh and i dont think thats a particularly arrogant thing to say

  • @evilrolo I find Stewart Lee to be a little Cult like at times. He's clever and plays his sets with a subtlety not found in very many other comedians. But the tonality of his fan base and indeed himself can come of as incredibly passive aggressive and elitest. For instance this piece, while totally accurate about the "hacks" in American stand up is -probably willingfuly- ignorant of the strong trend of political/social commentery in American stand up...

  • @evilrolo Versus the sometimes brainless strands of surrealism in british humor. I'm sure Stewart recognises these little intricacies that pop up but I'm never to certain about his followers. Sure they get the point of the joke, but do they understand this joke is an isolated point and not to be taken as a comment about American Humour over all.

  • @Franticalmagic I think Stewart definitely understands but with comedy you do have to play with stereotypes and caricatures otherwise you'd lose sight of the point and the punchline. As to whether the fans do, I think with youtube you get a strong haters vs fans dichotomy and fans are a bit more protective and vicious than they really are. I think for the most part people understand that 'Stewart Lee' on stage is essentially a character, who bends or even warps the truth to make very true points

  • @Franticalmagic errm. yes. but i definitely find that the best thing to do is to explain the joke. just to make sure. that always works.

  • Can I just say, people on YouTube take comedy far too seriously!!! Relax and have a giggle

  • @mackemrich My mother was killed by a comedian.

  • @oxfordamerican81 I think Stewart Lee was joking :)

  • @oxfordamerican81 Shove it up your ass. Your comment is of no value.

All though it was properly punctuated.

  • generalizing americans as stupid is ridiculous, stewart lee is not stupid thats make take on it, look how insightful i am.

  • Well it looks like I'll be the first to point out that chorizo sausage is from the Iberian Peninsula, leaving us all to wonder what the connection is with either Italy or Lithuania.

  • @weejockpoopongmcplop

Ah, but in the DVD extras regarding this piece, Stewart acknowledges his mistake, justifies and regrets it.

  • @Dripfed I would have expected nothing less :D

  • @oxfordamerican81 The latter !!

  • I couldn't breathe throughout that clip...

  • this comments section is full of pseudo intellectual cunts.

  • @mp9828 Also actual, salt of the earth, uncouth and judgemental cunts too. Apparently.

  • @jacksawild ha!!

  • @mp9828

    Et tu Brute ?

  • He looks like Morrissey in the video for "Irish Blood English Heart".

  • Ugh could we stop the American bashing. Has anyone actually been to America to inspect the ant nest populace? They may be career-obsessed but they aren't the dullest nik-naks in the souvenir box, not by a long shot.

  • @owenhunt It's chalk not shot !!

  • @domnal 'Not by a long chalk?' What!?

  • @domnal it's both

  • @tickleperson2 No it isn't !!

  • @domnal yes it is. google it. i can't believe i'm replying to this...

  • @tickleperson2 The expression is Not by a long chalk - It comes from the days when teachers used to write in chalk so to display a difficult or long argument on a thing called a blackboard it would take - wait for it "A LONG CHALK" - SHOT therefore makes no sense whatsoever. It is an historic English expression often misquoted as "shot" a long shot is different it comes from Riflemen trying to hit distant targets . A different difficulty from explaining something to morons . Ironic ?

  • @domnal wrong, it comes from using chalk to determine points in tavern games, and" not by a long shot" has been used for 120 years and it comes from archery, as a way of talking about a tough bet. too different phrases and they both make sense. long chalk means to beat out by a little bit.

  • @matt47forTED did you google it but you don't want to admit you're wrong or are you the sort of dude who just never accepts that they are ever wrong?

  • @tickleperson2 i googled it of course to find out that neither person was really wrong, sorry i used the worlds largest reference source to your dislike. Is it only acceptable to use/know terms if you found them out reading some crusty old english text book? someone says something you dont think is true on the internet of all places, its hard to expect that the person wouldnt simply google and check it out. . you should be happy that i actually looked it up, it means i read your comment.

  • @matt47forTED sorry dude. i responded to you by accident instyead of domnal! many apologies. you're original post was bang on! sorry again! :D

  • @tickleperson2 im also agreeing with you btw tickleperson, i said it was both i just put a little more infro there

  • @domnal you didn't google it did you?

  • @owenhunt Hmmm, have to disagree - a few years ago there was a joint study by two universities, i think it was Dublin and Stockholm, anyway this study found Americans to have the lowest IQs of any country in the developed world. I think thats pretty accurate having both been to the states, having relatives there, and meeting Americans over here.

  • Comment removed

  • The problem with many American standups is that they just see the medium as simply a stepping stone to getting their own show and someday being in movies.

  • Americans are of no value

  • @Grange34

    Don't sell yourself short fella.

Most people see the politicians, but some people see the person.

  • All American Comics with the exception of Doug Stanhope & Bill Hicks, are shit.

  • Stewart Lee is the best since Bill Hicks

  • @ScottishNonBeliever

it's taken too far, the original reason has been lost like the idea of blacks being a genuine 2nd class citizen.

  • 10 americans saw this and felt assaulted by a higher form of intelligence
