I'm an independant, And my income is WAY below $2.9 million, but according to this chart, Obama's tax plan takes roughly 1/3 of what you make if you make over 2.9 million. I like Obama, and I know everyone is gonna give me shit for this, but how is that fair for the people who have worked their way to making a lot of money. The income tax only accounts for 40% of the government's budget. If we got rid of the federal income tax the government would get the same amount of money as it got in 1997. It's wrong for the government to take money right out of our paychecks anyway. If part of our pay goes directly to the government, how is that any different from involuntary servitude?
It's not involuntary because we give consent for the gov't to take some of our money to promote the general welfare, as is its job in the Const. In theory, that is not necessarily a bad idea, in its own way, its in fact a good idea, but there are pros & cons to every choice, you have to remember that private companies only do jobs for themselves, they are there to make money, not to promote the public good, or because they care about people. As for now, I'm not exactly sure how the rest of the country goes about maintaining roads, but it does make sense to tax gasoline and use that among other things to fund public road maintenence.
What makes you think private companies don't want to promote the public good? Are the people in the government inherently better than people who work in private businesses? I don't think so. Businesses have to promote the public good if they want to make any money. The government is guaranteed the money that it takes from us by force no matter how poorly it does. I would trust a private company over the government any day.
I'm not against private enterprise, but there is a key difference between business and gov't. private business' #1 goal is profit. Period. gov't's #1 goal (at least in this country) is public good. Sure, sometimes there is a mixing and the gov't doesn't always do a good job, but without gov't i highly doubt that private companies would have much incentive to prevent pollution, collusion, or unfair wages. deregulation is sometimes a good thing, but definitely not for everything.

The numbers are just an average. A person making 300k won't get taxed as much as a person making 4.4 mil. There's a tax calculator on some website you can google it with the tax plan and you can type in how much you make and it will give you the number of how much you would save or be taxed.
someone making 300k and someone making 4.4 mil are in the same bracket. anyways, if you make under what something like 40k you get taxed none. 300k is somewhere around 38%. well by sense, shouldnt 4.4 mil be at least well over 50%?
we already do that, taxes are percent right now, so the more you make the more you pay BUT obama wants certain people pay 15% and others to pay 39%. and the people who pay 39% won't get tax cuts. So the people who pay less taxes get more tax cuts and the people who pay more taxes get no tax cuts. Its socialism under obama.

Socialism is whereby governments control the means of production. While capital is arguably a means of production it isn't one in terms of the socialist ideology of nationalising all resources such as the actions of Chavez in Venezuela (e.g. oil). This is incredibly inefficient economics because it prevents markets from operating and dictating, what, where, how and how much to produce, but you have to be able to distinguish between what is an efficient market outcome and a desirable one.
By taxing people, and providing tax relief to people on lower incomes, (arguably those people who need it most), it's not socialism which would require a fundamental overhaul of the U.S. capitalist system, e.g. the nationalising of industries and resources. It's merely mixed market economics, providing desirable market outcomes i.e. more people have the ability to feed, clothe and shelter their families.
A need for intervention in markets has only been furthe demonstrated recently by the sub-prime mortgage crisis, caused by a lack of regulation. Oh, and when the republicans pledged to prop up banks with subsidies, was that socialism? When the state takes the capital from one group of people and gives it to another that is socialism. And there is hardly much "private property" any more. The banks own most of this "private property" and the state owns the central bank. Or the bank could own the state either way its still not owned by the individual. The government forces unionization of automakers, infact most production is regulated by the state. And most companies get loans from the banks to buy the means of production.

The major problem with taxing the rich so much, is that the rich are the ones that make most of the investments in industry and business, and without these investments the economy will slow. When the economy slows, it won't be the rich that suffer, it will be the poor. Therefore an incredibly high tax on the rich hurts the poor the most.

That comment is without foundation. Unless you have overall proof that the "rich" are taking "our" hard earned money and still want a tax relief - you can't say that. I have seen people who make 250k and they struggle with terrible debt. If Obama became President, what do you think will happen to them? Honestly. And secondly, like I said before, there are numerous other reasons why I, at least, will never vote for Barack Obama.
You know people that make over 250K that have hard time I really question that , seeing that people that make over 250k are in the upper 2 % of all Americans .

My own parents, for example, make around 265k together and they are still struggling with paying for medical bills (mostly, mine - I hate to say - but I'm paying for them as well); past credit debt that has still to be paid off; etc. Most of the money that they make goes right to paying off those bad debts and they actually live on a small amount a month. If Obama were elected, you know exactly what would happen to them. And sedders123' comment was out of line and pointless.
I agree. It is a fallacy that a growing wealth gap is a bad thing. Wealth is not a pie, where if one person gets a bigger piece, than other people must get a smaller piece. All "redistributing" wealth will do is make everybody poor (except for the government and their cronies).

I'm an independant, And my income is WAY below $2.9 million, but according to this chart, Obama's tax plan takes roughly 1/3 of what you make if you make over 2.9 million. I like Obama, and I know everyone is gonna give me shit for this, but how is that fair for the people who have worked their way to making a lot of money. All the people who say it isn't socialism just say over and over again that rich people don't need all that money. That's hardly an excuse.

The income tax only accounts for 40% of the government's budget. If we got rid of the federal income tax the government would get the same amount of money as it got in 1997. It's wrong for the government to take money right out of our paychecks anyway. If part of our pay goes directly to the government, how is that any different from involuntary servitude?

In theory, that is not necessarily a bad idea, in its own way, its in fact a good idea, but there are pros & cons to every choice, you have to remember that private companies only do jobs for themselves, they are there to make money, not to promote the public good, or because they care about people. As for now, I'm not exactly sure how the rest of the country goes about maintaining roads, but it does make sense to tax gasoline and use that among other things to fund public road maintenence.

I'm not against private enterprise, but there is a key difference between business and gov't. private business' #1 goal is profit. Period. gov't's #1 goal (at least in this country) is public good. Sure, sometimes there is a mixing and the gov't doesn't always do a good job, but without gov't i highly doubt that private companies would have much incentive to prevent pollution, collusion, or unfair wages. deregulation is sometimes a good thing, but definitely not for everything.

last time i checked the fire and police department and in pretty good shape in my town. fires still being put out, police still arresting people and writing tickets.. i hear about a lot more problems in private industry - lay-offs, stagnant and cut wages, ridiculously large bonuses and pensions, money waste, product inefficiency, safety and health code violations, companies asking the government for more and more money...

The numbers are just an average. A person making 300k won't get taxed as much as a person making 4.4 mil. There's a tax calculator on some website you can google it with the tax plan and you can type in how much you make and it will give you the number of how much you would save or be taxed.

Socialism is whereby governments control the means of production. While capital is arguably a means of production it isn't one in terms of the socialist ideology of nationalising all resources such as the actions of Chavez in Venezuela (e.g. oil). This is incredibly inefficient economics because it prevents markets from operating and dictating, what, where, how and how much to produce, but you have to be able to distinguish between what is an efficient market outcome and a desirable one.

By taxing people, and providing tax relief to people on lower incomes, (arguably those people who need it most), it's not socialism which would require a fundamental overhaul of the U.S. capitalist system, e.g. the nationalising of industries and resources. It's merely mixed market economics, providing desirable market outcomes i.e. more people have the ability to feed, clothe and shelter their families.

I love his plan, it gives the middle and lower class a huge break, when under Bush's rule the upper class was getting a tax cut it simply didn't need.

These figures are based on the 2006 dollars so you could estimate that they paid about 3 percent more for 2007. He rob the top 10 percent income bracket. The bottom 50 percent of the tax bracket pays just 3 percent of the taxes but made 8 percent of the income. That is called socialism and obama wants to disparage even more.

And socialism includes many different aspects including absolute government control, and no PRIVATE PROPERTY, and all forms of production owned by states. Collective government ownership, etc.

When the state takes the capital from one group of people and gives it to another that is socialism. And there is hardly much "private property" any more. The banks own most of this "private property" and the state owns the central bank. Or the bank could own the state either way its still not owned by the individual. The government forces unionization of automakers, infact most production is regulated by the state. And most companies get loans from the banks to buy the means of production.

The bail out was the ultimate socialist move, if you are so against socialism, then don't be bias against Obama, because both parties agreed to the bail out. they arent accounting for obamas plan to take the cap off payroll taxes. His plan also calls for increase on federal gas tax, capital gains tax, medicare tax, increase rates for the social security trust. You do not understand supply economics. If you raise taxes on the rich then they will not invest in new products for you to buy and create new jobs for people. Also the worse the economy gets the more we need the supper rich to buy up failing businesses to create jobs.
The people under Obama who get more may buy some stuff but they will not invest to create jobs and make the country richer. You need to look beyond the what you clear see and look at what you don't see in economics.

economics is not about supply only. an abundance of supply will cause prices to drop. businesses get less money for their effort, quality drops and less businesses will survive. raising demand causes higher prices drives and more supply of higher quality to compete and bigger income for business. demand comes mostly from the middle class. don't assume everyone is making more than 2 million, only mccain's friends are that

The Democrats want total control of our lives and once they got all : Congress, Senate and Presidency, it will be all over. Say goodbye to our Freedom. They will change all our laws without any opposition. So many people are being swayed by hating the rich when in fact, they are the companies that moved the economy and create jobs. Taxing the rich will only increase prices of goods, lay off people and/or the rich will move their wealth elsewhere. Forcing companies to pay more tax is bad.

The major problem with taxing the rich so much, is that the rich are the ones that make most of the investments in industry and business, and without these investments the economy will slow. When the economy slows, it won't be the rich that suffer, it will be the poor. Therefore an incredibly high tax on the rich hurts the poor the most.

No.. Obama's plan is not more taxes.. its about changing the rates on people in different income brackets.. the vast majority of this country is in a bracket that will benefit from his plan. McCain wants to further cut taxes on the elitists that Bush started giving a break to from the beginning. He tried making them permanent and failed. Obama's plan wants to bring it back up to Reagan levels.. thats all. Reagan taxed them that much, not even in war time.

That's not true (regarding Obama). Obama admitted in a January 9th interview on CNN to John Roberts that, if elected as the President, he would want to raise taxes. Now suddenly he has "changed" his story saying he will lower them and people are voting for him? Speaking as someone on a low-income with no health insurance and currently self-employed (finding it very difficult to make a living), even I don't fall for what this man is saying.

Basically, I think he is saying what most people want to hear - but he doesn't have the facts to support what he's promoting. Either way, the economy will be in a worse state if he becomes President. During that interview of course he said he is going to raise taxes..because HE IS..on the people making over 200k and raise the capitol gains tax to where it was in the clinton era. Seeing that I'm right along with you on the low-income role, the rich don't care about taking our HARD EARNED money from us and still want a tax relief in the process. The rich see it as logical that they barely pay anything while we get the crap end of the stick. And will continue to do it while we feel sorry about taking the money that they already have taken from us. I use to think like this before I started doing taxes for IRS and had to deal with the rich. They don't care about us, family.

These may be documented to make the people happy to see that they believe the wealthy are getting taxed beyond. But in actuality, it is the latter. If you are rich, maybe you should be looking into finding these tax cuts. You can get them. I may be against them, but if the government lets you do them then I can only complain. That's what Constitution allows for me to do. And for your information, that 70% don't go to helping lazy and never-do-wells. It helps to get us out of our world debt..... My own parents, for example, make around 265k together and they are still struggling with paying for medical bills (mostly, mine - I hate to say - but I'm paying for them as well); past credit debt that has still to be paid off; etc. Most of the money that they make goes right to paying off those bad debts and they actually live on a small amount a month. If Obama were elected, you know exactly what would happen to them. And sedders123' comment was out of line and pointless.

I agree. It is a fallacy that a growing wealth gap is a bad thing. Wealth is not a pie, where if one person gets a bigger piece, than other people must get a smaller piece. All "redistributing" wealth will do is make everybody poor (except for the government and their cronies).
