  • NATIONAL ANTHEM

  • Vassar, you can count on him to lead the pack in the fiddle department. I learned from him first, everyone else after that.

  • woot!

  • @vcp430: a fiddle dances and a violon sings. If you want to get up dance and stomp it s a fiddle. But you are right it is the same instrument.

Luv this version of the Orange Blossom Special. These people are violin virtuosos on this one but I do want to clap and stomp so they are fiddle masters too.

  • Great version. Always someting new to learn.

  • Dear skeebot, Any stupid bitch can sing. It takes real talent to play this peice. She must have been 4yrsl old to learn this peice.

  • Some people are born to be musicians.

  • My Dad's favorite song...thanks.

  • i kinda just started playing the violin, whats the differents between a fiddle and a violin?

  • @mckeNZ321 They are the same instrument, the styles of music that each one plays are completely different. You can play both fiddle songs and violin songs on the same instrument so if you are interested in learning fiddle I suggest trying it.

  • @mckeNZ321 Violin is in classical, fiddle is for country and bluegrass. No real difference.

  • My Uncle Gilbert played the fiddle and he could play this with his eyes closed. My Uncle Jack played the banjo and the dobro, and my mama played the guitar and the banjo, argue with that! I love my family!

  • Even with your eyes closed, you can always recognize Vassar's playing amongst all the other players. Truly one of the greatest to ever pick up a fiddle.

  • First time i heard it was ona Miss America contest. I was nuts about. I couldn't believe she didn't win. Miss Mississippi play it. some other bitch won. But, i think she got second place. Ever since then, I stopped watching Miss America,

  • @josette4231 Miss Mississippi was NOT a bitch.

  • This song belongs on the fiddle!!!

  • you can really feel the train comin down the line

  • Alison Krauss was just on Prairie Home Companion today. Love the video and the music!

  • I heard "Chubby anthony" play a version of it. He was awesome. Has anyone heard him live or know of him.

  • Great! whoooohoooo!!!

  • His tone is so warm and inviting - beautiful and genuine all the way home

  • Mark O Connor is bether

  • The Guy who wrote this is in the Nursing home I work at

  • @Dayberry I would like to contact him , I can explain why. erinhovland@yahoo.com

  • @motheronafight I would like to be able to let you contact him but he's 91 and has dementia so you cant really hold a conversation with him

  • @Dayberry I'm sorry, but the writer of OBS was the late, great Ervin T. Rouse. He passed away in the mid 70's, and the other unmarked writer, Robert "Chubby" Wise, passed away in 1996. Not to dissepoint you, but the writer is not living anymore.

  • @vcp430 Thinking back on what they said... he was the first to record the song. So I guess I took it wrong and maybe they was bullshitting me anyway but he sure can play it still.

  • Good ol' boys. Keeping that old tyme music alive!

  • eeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

  • this man made many others albums what they were!

  • awesome.

  • 19 people have no taste in music

  • Vasser Clements, one of the Best if not THE Best .Micheal Cleveland is a close second. And Del McCoury is another of my favorites, no to mention all the rest in this video.

  • Vasser Clements, one of the Best if not THE Best .Micheal Cleveland is a close second.

  • I love this song. I love Johnny Cash. But, darling it is a fiddle song. One of miss america played this as her tallent. I couldn't beleive she did not win. A stupid girl that sung a song won. I think thugh she came in first runner up.

  • a truly american heritage of very beautiful music,i-moving my feet along with my heart

  • im the only 16 year old that loves this it seems like.

  • Wonderful performance

  • There aint no ham like Birmingham!

  • this was my dad's favorite songs RIP daddy

  • You can't play this song at a fiddler's contest because it's such a crowd favorite.

  • This is a guitar player's nightmare, the damn fiddle player will have your lower arm wanting to fall off. You hold that "E" chord for the longest time while the fiddler has a blast and gets all the glory. But, when the fiddler is great like Vassar, it's a hoot to be part of. I just always liked it to be the last song.

  • @nailswood exactly. I've tried playing this with a couple of friends, and it just about makes my arm just be like "alright. I quit. have fun without me". but what a great song!!!

  • Are Rhonda Vincent and Alison Krauss two of the hottest looking women in bluegrass or what? They're pretty good fiddle players, too!

  • just wonderful ... congratulations ... greetings from mexico

  • Great Sound/Song ! Magical violins !

RIP VAssar ! died in 2005...

  • i love this sound/song ! Magical violins !!!

  • A SPECIAL fiddler!!!!! The others guys are SPECIAL too!

    So SWEET to the ears.

Who in the hell doesn't like this?

  • Great piece of music

  • I had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago at a jam session. I hid my fiddle under my chair, and he and Doc Watson blew me away.

  • I mean... he's up there playing with all of those young, well-practiced fiddle mo sters and he's in a stratosphere all of his own. The rules and conventions are there to be dismissed at any second, and he's never out of place. Listen to the way he takes over at 4:23: no obnoxious notes or hamming.

    Sweetness.

  • Them there folks are pretty good. Heck, if they keep practicing, they might get on the radio one of these days. LOL!

  • Hope you are having fun Vassar and say hi to Jerry for me

  • THIS is AWESOME!! I haven't heard this in AGES!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this with us!!!

  • Y'a du monde! ♥

  • I was 11 years old when i first heard this orange blossom special. Today Im almost 40 and i feel the same happiness to hear this song again with such very talented musicians. Greeting from Mexico...

  • Look at their faces. They love what they do and it shows. This music pierces deep.

  • That's fiddle group sex, and its awesome!

  • Wow! What a collection of talented fiddlers! And a great classic too!

Even the Irish fiddlers love playing "The Orange Blossom Special!"

  • these songs make me feel enerjetic

  • Excellent!

  • this music is true America , i feel so much pride in my country , that we can make music like this,, so deeply heartfelt and genuine,, and real.. thanks for putting it up here,, a great classic,, thanks

  • A friend of my dad's, he was a really nice man to boot. Was upset when my dad passed away. Always had time to come visit when I brought dad out to his shows close by.

  • If you dont love this , then you are deaf or dead!!!!

  • I was just talking to my Dad on the phone and he mentioned his favorite song. Of course I had to come listen. :) What a great song.

  • Wonderful!

  • Hunter Berry is one of the best fiddle players ive ever heard!

  • That was awesome! So many great fiddlers up there.

  • Guauuuuu que manera de alegrarme la noche con esta melodia por demas hermosa..... esta interpretacion me ha inyectado una energia!!!!

  • @roxorian - hahahahahahahahaha u must have a small family son

  • @roxorian STOP COMING TO THESE VIDEOS THEN! simple as that! but i guess your brain isnt big enough to tell you not to come here....hmm too bad for you!

  • @roxorian Woooow, this is what being an inbred looks like.

    So so sooo sorry.

  • ahieeeeee!!!!! Help me....I just heard heaven aloud!!! Oh that Vassar. Woweee

Dang that's the real stuff. Dancing with tears in my eyes... Thank you.

  • @wavepainter shut up idiot

  • thanks,

    fabulous vidéo

    many thanks

  • LOL I found this..and thought of a old friend Marcus.

  • absolutely LOVE this stuff. i grew up listening to my Grandpa play this song at every get-together since time immemorial. i remember this was the only song that would have me come running, scared to miss anything. Don't you love American music as a whole? saw a kickass Blues group out of Chicago last night, saw the best Jazz Ensemble i've ever seen a week before that, a Soul/Motown band right in the middle, and going to a Bluegrass fest at the end of the month. musical snobbery is for dummies!

  • Wow.

  • RIP Vassar Clements

  • now thats truely awesome

  • Only thing missing is Mark O'Connor. He owns this song.

  • Rhonda Vincent and Alison Krause are smokin' hot...and they play a pretty good fiddle, too!

  • this is bad ass t

  • Only thing holdin "blonde" back, forgot his name - the one before Rhonda Vincent, is his box. He's got a shitty sounding violin.

  • No delete please

  • WHAT, Me Vasser is my cousin.

  • ESpectacularrrrrr!

    EXCELENTE!

    MUY BUENO!!

  • I'd like to know the brand of his fiddle,. the finger board is beautiful :)

  • @kirstalump You're kidding, right? According to reliable sources, it's a Gaspar Diuffoprugcal, made in the mid to late 1500's. John Hartford acquired it, loaned it to Vassar, and later gave it to him as a Christmas present! You could probably buy it -- if you've got a spare million bucks or so laying around. ; )

  • @JimmyDeLocke It's a copy. I guarantee it.

  • @JimmyDeLocke hahah thank you ! =P I'll have to start saving hahahah

  • I know Alison Krauss! she's a famous singer!!... and fiddle player

  • this is gooooooooooooooooood blue grass

  • YAY - lots of fiddles! Thanks - this is just a great performance.

  • Is that Rhonda Vincent in the black dress?

  • It's really sad that the two fiddlers to the far left died in a car accident

  • I hate to say it but the guys are definitely out fiddling the girls.

  • Wow, Great song! My favorite! I love how they all play it at the same time as they go into part B. !

  • I love the way tyhe girl on the fiddle jumps up and down as she plays!

  • I met this guys nephew at work today!

  • One of my grandaddy's favorites. RIP

  • @mrsjbigos my popi's favorite also

  • i cant play this

  • One of our favorites, The Moore Brothers,

    Jacob & Isaac

  • i miss u vasser my 4th cousin i remember every reunion you played

  • i know how to play this too

  • i can play this too

  • ese abuelito no es el mismo de la Mansion Playboy

  • Bringing "our" Baby back is referring to a girl, not the baby christ. FCOL keep religion out of music. Religion has done enough damage on its own.

  • Um...Your wrong, look into your music before you open your mouth.

  • OMG !@#$%

  • That's not lighting scaffolding that your seeing at timeframe 0:27...

  • you sir or madam are fucking retarded...

  • @bubslate Takes one to know one?

  • dude, even forrest gump thought that was a lame comeback.

  • This was my Grandpa's favorite song, and he played it perfectly too. He died in August, I miss him so much, makes me cry when I hear this song. I'm only 15, but I sure know amazing talent when I hear it :)

  • That poor bass player! Hang in there, man!

Wow....what a convergence of such awesome talent. This really is what it's all about!

  • there aren't that many bass notes

not to mention the player should already have a callus

  • *slaps head ..

Of course! Thank you for helping to set me straight on that.

  • I played Jump Swing Fever over a hundred timeson double bass. That gave me blisters and calluses. *That* was painful.

And playing symphonic works when you forget your bow. Ouch.

  • I was thinking about that myself. Did he play the whole piece by himself, rather than have somebody spell him for a few measures at least. He's a tough rascal, he is!

  • Fantastic !!!!!

  • WEELLLLLL GLORY!!! Mighty Fine! Mighty Fine!

  • Chill right up and down my spine.

    Magic.

  • I learned Twinkle Twinkle Little star...but then again, I play Violin...not fiddle...

  • Very enjoyable thanks for sharing.

  • Unreal...double shuffle to a cosmic level lol lol...I mean Alison Krauss is just one of these fiddlers..omg...how incredible this must have been to be there live....wow!!!

  • Double Shuffle...? It's the Hoakum Bow that's used in the Orange Blossom Special..... Bowing for the Hoakum is not the same as the double shuffle..... Hoakum is a 3 stroke bowing that ends on the 16th stroke as the turn around... :o)

  • Absolutely right Vidman!!! Thanks for correcting me on that....I worked for Sound City recording studios and this group called the Aman Folk Ensemble told me that it was called the 'double shuffle", but again, your right, and I just learned something!!!!

  • Vassar made sound no one else ever has. Wonderful bunch there playing and honoring one of the very best of the best. May he rest in peace.

  • I learned to play this when Vassar himself taught me - and it's been my big show stopper ever since - just wish I could've been part of this evening.

  • I'm no great fan of country-western, but this song is something I will stop what I'm doing, most of the time anyway, listen to it, and applaud.

  • Now if they were to start playing "Deuling Banjos" from Deliverance, I'm outta here!

  • me and my orcristra have to merise this and walk dance and play

  • I hope you're not American...

  • lol... I hope yr just being funny but for those who genuinely don't know, the song was written in '38 by Ervin T. Rouse. Charlie Daniels was age 2 at the time.

  • No way this is an old folk tune

  • Excellent!

  • Brilliant! Remember listening to this tune before I had hairs on my chest.

From a UK steam railway fan

  • one of the hardest songs ....ever

  • My good friend Jeff West who now lives in Tenn played with Vassar, he acted like he just wanted to play with friends at a local jam session. Very good people, those bluegrasser's.

  • Wow!

  • Looks like too many people on the stage...

  • fabulus YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

  • Ooops, looked into it a little more. Yep, that's the fiddle but it was given to him as a gift by John Hartford. That thing has such a full rich sound. I hope it gets passed down to another great musician.

  • Vassar's my mom's cousin. Always been proud of that. He's a damn fine fiddle player. You won't find better and he's damn sure the best of this bunch. Vassar, is that the ancient fiddle you bought? Sure sounds good either way.

  • Fabulous...

    Thanks for posting

  • Fantastic! Awesome! The fiddle is the 8th wonder of the world!

  • that's a buttload of fiddlers. and it works.

  • True to heart country

  • Dont like it - - too much liberty taken from the original song; and the words just dont fit

  • well let see your version, play, record and post here for our reviews

  • Very good fiddlin'. Thanks for sharing, Jodie.

  • The Pro's doin' their thing! Mighty fine fiddlin' and greatly enjoyed. Thanks Jodie for sharing, C.W.

  • where are t3h breakdowns?

  • Couldn't make it. Car problems.

  • Saw Vassar at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica back in the 80's. His playing was so phenominal!! Flawless technique, and it looked as though he was barely moving his fingers.

  • my grandmas favorite song

  • good ol vassar! they all sounded great. you can get a lot of mileage out of first position. i always wonder what they could do if they used the higher octaves available, a la paganini. i bet that will be the next big step forward in country fiddling, melding classical technique with the drive and excitement of good fiddling.

  • I learned to play classical violin with written notes, so it's kind of hard transition to make to fiddle, but sounds cool

  • Great fiddle players and great song...I think you'd be hard pressed to find a group THIS big of fiddlers to play that song at the same time and sound this good.

btw I wonder where in the world was Mr. J. Gimble??

  • This just brings tears to my eyes. Such a wonderful musical moment.

  • Vassar got that white soul thing going on. Saw him once at a club in the '80's, doing this kinda cheesy fusion thing. As a change-up, Vassar did "Listen to the Mockingbird" complete with bird calls & we all went nuts. Thanks for preserving this.

  • An American classic!

  • i've only just discovered vasser,what a musician.cant stop playing this.thaanks vasser.frank from england

  • Still, this is pretty good

  • Leahy`s version is better..

  • 3 years ago I had the rare opportunity to play bass while Vassar and a couple of close friends played this song.......A 6min rendition I will never forget. I miss him dearly.

  • oh and del mccoury - yeehaw!

  • i just loved vassar's playing. saw him when i was in college and taking biology - jokingly referred to him as vascular clements for a while - but respectfully. bless his soul.

  • This fabulous video makes me weep.... How fantastic can it get????? We miss you, Vasser!!!!
