  • Sounds like an impact wrench.

  • Obviously there's a ghost in the house. Come on, haven't you seen the movies?

  • sings* All by myself, don't wanna be, All by myself anymore!

  • have you tried leaving the radio on when you go out? sometimes just a persons voice can make them feel like someone is with them

  • it makes me sad, get him a puppy

  • He's got a beautiful voice. Do you bring him with you when you can? My Basset does the same thing. Because I live in an appartment building with my fiance, one of us normally has him with them when the other isn't at home.

  • Who cares if he's on the furniture? That was one of my favorite things about my Basset! I'd sit in a chair and he'd waddle on over and jump in my lap! 60lb lap dogs are the best! XDDDDD .....But seriously, keep his nails clipped and then who cares if he gets on the furniture. Heck, I sure as hell don't want to have to sit on the ground to pet him! lol

  • I have 2 Bassies and they both howl when I am gone.

  • exercise has nothing to do with separation anxiety

  • poor little buddy

  • Great video is there anywhere I can find out more about this?

  • I love this video, and Dodger is a very good lookin fella! I got a kick out you put, "Nobody knows....:" and then later, "Nobody knows my sorrow", Very well done, thank you for posting!

  • Odd he looks at the same spot. Maybe you have a ghost that scares him

  • He is saying, "I'm on the furniture! Come back and stop me!" over and over again. Poor Dodger.

  • soooooooooooooooooooooo sad. when my dogs are alone, they would cry. this video makes me cry

  • Your neighbors must love you :P

  • Do you think he gets on the furniture because it has your smell?

  • Whenever I took my Basset with me for a drive he would IMMEDIATELY bark and whine when I got out of the car. To solve the furniture thing, I gave him his own recliner. It was funny to see the look on his face when someone else sat in it.

  • Bassets are extremely social animals. They HATE being seperated from people. My basset would flip out any time people came around. She would demand to be pet by every single person that walks by. And when you try and run away from a basset they'll chase you down and cry like crazy. They hate being left behind. They must have been bread that way to hunt in packs.

  • It took me 2-3 weeks to cure two dogs with separation anxiety, you just have to be consistent at it.

A dog that follows you from room to room, always has you in sight, is a sure sign that a dog suffers from separation anxiety

  • He doesn't understand "I won't be long",

All he knows is, now you're gone....

  • i think he is playing king of the hill more than anxiety, haha. my basset does the same thing, super sneaky when i'm gone

  • My hound Maxwell had the same issues.

He hated being left at home,or in the car, he didn't even like to ride in the back seat.

He always to be right in the front where he could watch everything going on. He passed away almost 10 years ago. But we loved him and his memory still brings a tear to the eye. Like the saying goes, "He was not our dog, We were his people."

  • Thats just his victory song, Because hes King of the couch!

  • I'm no expert on dogs but I'm gonna guess that part of the reason he's getting on the couch is that he smells your scent on the couch and wants to be close to you.

  • Yeah, I can't leave my basset tied up outside of a store for 1 minute without him whining and crying.

  • Been around a lot of bassets, they get very attached to their families and very, very worried when they are left alone and do not know where everybody went!

  • They are very loyal and just make for sure that you tell him where you're going and that you'll be back after a bit and make for sure that you tell him that you love him!

  • Dodger is sooooo funny!

    Great dog,smart

Basset hounds are the smartest dogs out there; you simply can't have them do what you want; they do what they want!

  • I have 2 dogs with separation anxiety. I totally understand what you are dealing with, it's hard. At least Dodger doesn't seem to be destructive while left alone. A second/third/fourth pet won't always help (I have 6 dogs). We have resorted to leaving the radio or TV on for some relief but again it's not enough.

  • both my bassets do but idk they dont just chill together

  • He's sad :(

  • When your basset does that in public, you feel that people will think you're killing the poor thing!

  • my schnoodle (poodle and schnauzer or however you spell it) always howls

  • AW...my schnauzer has seperation anxiety but its high pitch squeeling i feel so bad but the vet said he will grow out of it.

  • I dont know, why?

  • Um... dogs cost money for upkeep, and getting a second dog does not always solve the problem. I've been in the situation where there are two dogs and one has separation anxiety. Neither one was a troublemaker, but when they were left alone together, and we returned, they had torn through the house!

Anyway... On a side note, I've never understood why insulting someone by name-calling is supposedly supposed to support your point. Very childish.

  • @argonne5 Hey moron, he said he wasn't unaware of it until he set up a camera and caught this footage.

  • @argonne5 so they should never leave the fucking house for anything unless they can take the dog with them? Retard...

  • I love basset hounds, poor boy he needs a friend! I have 2 basset hounds and they are just wonderful!

  • Aw... he'll be ok as long as you come home now and then, haha. My pugs just sleep when we're away... and bark at squirrels.

  • He wants to be with your scent, thats why hes getting on the couches. Poor thing. My dog is going through something similar, I have never heard her howl but the neighbours have been saying she howls for hours while we are away, barks and howls until she is hoarse. I don't find separation anxiety funny in the least.

  • You may want to re-read your dog's body language. Dodger is bored, not suffering from separation anxiety. His body language is relaxed. He shows none of the other signs: destruction, panting, salivating, pacing, digging, defecating etc that dogs with separation anxiety exhibit. His howl is an "I'm bored, Is anyone lsitenting?" bark, not a "I'm afraid to be alone" howl. Hear how he stops periodically to see if anyone is listening? Sep anx dogs just keep barking as they are in a panic.

  • What would help him more than anything is more mental and physical exercise. This breed has stamina and needs an outlet for it. Tracking, running beside a bike at a slow pace, giving him a Kong stuffed with yummies or a Buster Cube and other mental toys while you are away would all help. Teach him some tricks. This is truely a case of "a tired dog is a good dog"! Hope this helps!

    From another former bassett owner.

  • @supernaturalbc2008 I take my Basset for walks very often cause, as you say these babies are indeed a dymano!

  • I think he is calling you home! And it always works, you come home.

  • My basset Samson does this too, he can't stand me to leave the house without him. He whines, howls and jumps on the furniture to see out the windows and watch for me LOL. Hes such a big baby but I love him. He is all comedy and he is such a suck up LOL. He eats anything he can find except HIS food.

  • my bassett did the same thing!! ahahahah to funny

  • my hound fred does the same thing

  • We give our babies a "going away treat". When they see us putting on our shoes, they go head for the closet. It makes leaving a bit easier. One of the boys will still go lie down in front of the sliding glass door and watch us leave. He sleeps there untill we are back.

It does help having more than one in the house. We had 3 papillons, but we lost the mama this week. One of her boys is really sad now.

  • sounds like the car of my neihghbour

  • Poor thing. Basset hounds hate being alone.

  • that dog is looking for a response.. the way he's projecting his howl upwards... he's on the furniture not to piss you off.. but because the only way he'd know someone is in the house is if someone to tell him to get off.

  • our dog does this same thing on the furniture when we leave, and i always wondered if that was why- as a test to see if anyone is REALLY home! hehe.

  • If you can't afford another dog maybe try flipping on your tele while you're out.

  • A second hound is definitely the ticket for poor Dodger! (C:

  • Oh, poor boy! My hound has some pretty bad separation anxiety too and we've done the same thing, leaving the camera on once while we were out for a few hours...I felt so bad for her after watching the footage.

  • My Basset used to have the exact same problem. Getting another dog solved that issue. It is unnatural for a dog to be apart from its pack, particularly for bassets which were breed to work in large packs and be very sociable. This has nothing to do with training or the dog not "obeying you"; Dodger is just lonely and worried.

  • Bless Dodgers heart! He's so cute.

  • My basset has separation anxiety too... but his is worse than this. He barks and howls nonstop, climbs on the furniture and defecates and pees everywhere out of anxiety, and it starts the minute we leave. We can't afford to get another dog right now, and we can't leave him at home to grow out of it since we live in an apartment, so we have to take him to a sitter during the day... it sort of sucks. But we're still working on it.

  • that sucks!

  • Did you manage to fix the howlign and barking?

  • We have a walker hound. He sings non-stop when he is not allowed to go bye-bye. LOUD!!!

  • This must be how my Ben acts when he's home alone too. Neighbours report constant barking.

  • your dog needs a dog.

  • my basset also has that until he realises im still in the house! he goes out howl when he sees me he just licks my face...love bassets! will never have other race of dogs!

  • Yeah, my babies don't like it when we left them behind also, it also show how much these babies rely on us as their "parents", you should be proud of yourself ;)

  • I'll try my best! But its genetic you know. Thanks

  • Yea, we fired your mom, she's just not the greatest house keeper in the world. And I think she was stealing my cheetos!

  • tail wagging, relaxed positure, no tal between legs ore ears lay bakc....dont think he has serious issues. Just bored. Afther a while he cond of get involved in the boredom and starts getting anxiety, but i think its absolutely preventeble.

Will he eat while home alone? if he does its probobly not that bad. Try to give him a shewing bone ore kong..etc. ..get his thoughts on somthing else, good luck

  • This poor baby has serious separation anxiety.

This is not in the least bit funny. Please consider consulting with a behaviorist that can help you work through this with this beautiful basset before he turns his anxiety into destructive behavior.

  • Well...he was getting too much hair on the sofa so we had to put him down out back!

  • Im just kidding. He's doing fine. He almost always stays outside when we're not at home. What we do is we usually stick him in the backyard before we get ready and he never suspects anything.

  • he gets on it because it smells like you (i have a dog with seperation anxiety) you should try freezing kong filling in a kong for him and leaving the tv on for him ...my dog has tried eating through to wall to get out

  • Poor baby. My girl does the same thing, although she has gotten better in the last few months with us working with her. But she still tries to beat me to the car.

  • I know that one...he's always trying to slip his way out in front of us out the door to the garage.

  • The sofa & chair probably give him some comfort, like the "bed" he'd make for himself in a den in the wild (if he were a wolf!), and the added height makes it easier for him to watch and listen for you. His breeding was geared toward making it easier for him to catch a scent (with his ears) but since he can't smell anything... Smart boy.

He keeps calling out to you to come back home and eventually you hear it and come home! He's a genius!

    You have understanding neighbors. :p

  • how's dodger now? I'm having the same problem with Mona, my 4-year old adopted basset... and I dunno what to do!!

  • Still the same. I posted it online the day after I recorded it. He's fine when we're at home or when he's left in the backyard. I found a few sites online that give suggestions on how to treat separation anxiety. Just google "dog separation anxiety".

  • my basset hound can kick your sister's ass!
