it aint so much tyre choice as what pressures u got u can run slicks on the sand at like 12psi and do fine while having soem 31 muddies running hi pressures and get stuck... how do i know... my paj had bald tyres wen i went on the dunes and i recovered my mates patrol with 31's
Just looking at the AWD system, its reactive, and slow reactive too. That is okay, but it means that the consumer shouldn't be prepared for off-road excursions. If you want a little SUV that can do more, go with a Nissan X-Trail or Subaru Forester. The Honda however is still fantastically reliable, solid and useful though.
For those people who think the way he was pulled out of the bog was too hard and they should have taken up the slack first, you are very much WRONG is this respect. The snatch strap acts as a big rubber band and uses the torque and power from the towing vehicle to pull the stuck vehicle out. This is the reason why you should NEVER stand near a snatch strap while it is being used.
Just ask those blokes from top gear when the went to the Middle East
@shrewsburyboarder34 its called a snatch. u make the momentum of the puller snatch the vehicle out, used many times mudding. the tow rope is used like that, they are like bungee cords
Garbage crv should even brought that junk out there to begain with...lmao And it does'nt even matter if it did have TIRES it would of still got stuck.
Whatever, already do it. That's what I'm saying, don;t give me that shit I do the same stuff. Yes, in a honda. Maybe not some of the more extreme but I wouldn't care to do rock crawling even if I had a jeep.
@WKHalford well lets say I can't get across it on foot without at least calf-high mud boots or something. Extreme enough to where I can't walk around on it easily. Reasonably extreme and It can climb, does way better with 215 70r 15 toyo all roads. Those I do not presently have, I have X-trac ii's on it for the mud.
@LeonRFpoa The lighter weight of the CRV certainly should help it in some situations compared to heavier more off-road worthy 4wd vehicles. And the right tires do make a major difference.
I wouldn't mind having something like a CRV for everyday driving and mild off-roading, especially if I end up getting a job somewhere where it snows (I'm currently jobless in Florida).
But for more extreme off-roading, I'll either keep my Tacoma TRD 4wd, or I'll get a 4wd built for harsh off-road.
@WKHalford well say if I was going to shell out some money on one, I would go with a Mercedes Unimog and kit it out. And yeah, I drive my CR-V around town, get 24mpg and pull it right off steep trails that get slicked out and it barely has any problems coming or going but you do on foot. Telling you, there's impressive footage of them all over youtube.
@LeonRFpoa The problem with the Unimog off road is it's sheer size and weight. I prefer something that can handle tight trails. I've been rock crawling and trail exploring in Kentucky where a Unimog simply wouldn't fit. Even my '94 Mazda Navajo 4wd (same as a 2 door Explorer) barely fit in some places. Same goes with Florida trails.
One problem with vehicles like the CRV is limited aftermarket, especially with traction-aiding differentials. At least the Escape has options for it's Dana 28 rear.
i agree whith you my friend. The CR-V are a very good SUV. For me it's a great vehicule for off roading, very lighter, economic, good for the family....
I had an '06 Wrangler Unlimited (the year before the current Wrangler design). Although it DID have a few durability issues, it was by far the best performing 4wd I have EVER had. And mine was NOT the Rubicon version.
Even though my '06 Tacoma TRD 4wd has a 3" lift, 33" tires, and the rear locker that comes with the TRD, even it doesn't do quite as well off-road as my Wrangler that was stock except for 31" tires.
There's no way a CRV could do as well as my Wrangler did in rough stuff.
BULLSHIT. The truth is the CRV is a honda off road suv, yes- it goes slow, you can't fuck anything up and expect to keep it running. PPl in Jeeps love them, that's great. Fact is I will get anywhere a jeep will and still be driving my car afterward. Jeeps are CHRYSLER let me remind you, and CHRYSLER cars are known globally as pieces of shit. Jeep may be the ONLY exception. even then, it still has shit american electrics, same shitty transmission design and lack of efficiency.
@LeonRFpoa CRV an "off road" SUV? THAT is true BULLSHIT.
A Wrangler Rubicon is an example of an "off road" SUV (especially the '06 and older). Not only are Wranglers designed to be off road worthy from the factory, but the Rubicon is an off road package designed to make the Wrangler perform even better.
Yes, the CRV is one durable and reliable vehicle. BUT Honda DOES NOT offer an off-road package, nor does Honda design the CRV to be very off-road capable.
Only the 2000 and past CRV can off road. The new ones can't (the redesign made them suck). I done some pretty heavy off roading with my 99' sugar sand logging trails, climbing a 2 story sand dune, etc.
the crv doesnt have 4x4.. it's realtime all wheel drive, which means when the front start slipping like hell, it sends like 25 or 30% power to the back...
@98022892 Well no shit the 4runner got a running start, it sat there to begin with but needed some speed to yank that piece of shit out since it was stuck so badly in 2 inches of sand
what tyres did did the CR-V have and what tryres did the other car have? also the cr-v actually did manage to drive along the same sand as the other car, it just got stuck later on, probably deeper sand.
The 4runner has a 65 year old 4WD design in it, but it still works pretty damned good. Subaru has a good AWD system, but Honda's is an embarrassment. Think of it as FWD with rear axle assist. It can only send 5-10% of the torque to the rear wheels.
@fubecabr it sends power proportionally to the front wheel spin. I have a crv and it gets around just fine and this is coming from a person that lived in the snowbelt of pennsylvania 70 inches of snow from just one storm last year and i got around much better than my roommate that had a subaru with snow tires and i had summer tires with 55k miles on them im not saying they are like my moms sierra with the z71 package but they get the job done in snow never got stuck once
@wezdog1 find me where i said it has road tyres and the other one doesnt. I merely implied the tryes of the cars could and will have been different. Please think in future.
@mooseling1 You are a fuckwit. trying to change everyone's mind. The crv is shit, ive '4wd' with them, absolutely useless. And guess what my relatives own a bmw that does 4.9L per 100km so suck 8=====D
@wezdog1 And you are not trying to change peoples mind are you? Again, please find where i said the crv is excellent of road. Are you trying to show of to people you have never met that your sister or mother (probably same person) has a bmw? as i certainly never mentioned fuel economy either.... If you decide to humiliate yourself further and reply, try to be a bit more intelligent this time.
@mooseling1 oooooh fuck me you are smart, shit i thought twice about replying. Mate, im just trying to let you know that its not worth it. And i love the way you try to back pedal, one minute you are sticking up for your beloved cr-shit and now once you have been told its crap you claim to be neutral. if it makes you feel any better, im neutral too, ill still pull you out :)
crvs are good suv. They're not made for big offroading. They're good suv for fuel economy and they have a very great stabiity on road, especially in the snow. I've a lot of fun in winter with them.
have you ever driven a car that has under 1 ton and a 1.3 liter diesel engine? thats fuel economy. even in my bmw 5 series with diesel engine i managed to do over 1.200 km on a 75 liter fuel tank. do that in a suv
you claim to cober 1200km on 75 litres of fuel? that is 16 or so gallons, so that is 75 mpg, sorry but i dont believe that all. also all of this on road stability stuff, i bet that the second a centimetre of snow falls your rear wheel drive bmw cant move anywhere, whereas the honda crv can.
so you are saying that every time it snows all bmw drivers leave their cars home? and i live in europe. we have winter too and cars with low consumption here... on every street... imagine that :))
this might surprise you, but i live in the UK, during the last few weeks when you had maybe only 10 -15 cm on snow, well you are right bmw drivers didnt leave their cars at home, they would just continously get stuck, not be able to start uphill and all rear-wheel drive cars were struggling.
OK, lets try living outside of your little online world.... if you had half of a brain, you would realize that this guy lives in Australia, and yes - English was not invented by Americans. You probably think that English was spoken by native Americans, right. I feel sorry for you that you could not figure that one out by yourself...... btw - I am 6'7" and weigh 260... do you really want a piece of this??
This model of CRV does not have low range, nor does it actually have a proper 4WD system. It has an 'on demand' system that is basically front wheel drive with a viscous coupling to put power to the rear wheels when the front loses traction.
This viscous coupling cannot be locked to give permanent drive to the rear wheels. It is particularly weak in situations like the one showed here - by the time the viscous coupling kicks in, the front wheels have already buried themselves...
garamath is right. CRV's have viscous diffs. meaning the diff acts like a lsd or locked diff but doesnt quite cut it in these situations. go the hilux
it's right. I have one CRV 2002 4X4 and I need to change my road tire Premier Touring of BFG to a all terrain from BFG. I have my tire in 205/70R15 and i am thinking to put 225/70 R15. I am not very sure that i can do it. Last sunday i stay a little stuck in sand trying to go out the boat of a friend from the beach whit this tire, so we put some rock and table whood to give them more traction and we go out in 1 hour. We put out the boat to get out the CRV.
hey yo - did u go to college, well I did & there is a thing called a sense of humor...... I'm guessing your parents raised you poorly, and now you are left to suffer and lash out at people online -- really cool!!! i hope your dumb ass feels really great about itself!!! BTW - I could probably pound your ass into the ground like a T-post --- bring it chump!!
sorry but if u want to go through mud and sand u need a 4wd. also this 4wd has to have reasonable ground clearance and reasonably large tires (31") that u let the psi down when u go on sand.
the best tyre for sand driving is a standard highway tyre dropped to 18-25psi (depending on the weight carried in the vehicle) I wouldn't tak a CRV or an X-Trail 4wdriving if your paid me, they're a softroader. Not sure where your from, but I know for a fact that these two vehicles aren't recommended in places like rainbow beach or moreton island in QLD, Australia. A real 4wd has more ground clearance and low range. Try a suzuki sierra or daihatsu feroza if you want a a small 4wd
This is true, the CRV doesn't have a great 4wd, but in my old 2001 I did just fine in sand. Had general grabbers and never got stuck once. The upside to this cars AWD system is the low torque, if you start slow and keep your foot off the gas you roll instead of dig/spin. Same on ice.
But 6 months ago I've upgraded to a 4runner. Night and day, but the the CRV was a great reliable little truck that held its own.
I have one to here in Yucatan in Mexico and it's a very great car in sand. You can see my videos. Only Change the tires whith a better off road design and it's a great SUV.
Not sure what the author meant, but you hit the nail on the head. Without a low range, or some kind of "granny gear", a vehicle can't transfer enough power in a controlled fashion to get proper off road traction. I've been told CRVs do not have a low range, but I don't know for sure. You can "off road" in high range, but it needs to be a pretty solid surface. If you sink down a few inches, odds are -if- you have traction, you may not have the power to get out.

hey yo - did u go to college, well I did & there is a thing called a sense of humor...... I'm guessing your parents raised you poorly, and now you are left to suffer and lash out at people online -- really cool!!! i hope your dumb ass feels really great about itself!!! BTW - I could probably pound your ass into the ground like a T-post --- bring it chump!!

no
sorry but if u want to go through mud and sand u need a 4wd. also this 4wd has to have reasonable ground clearance and reasonably large tires (31") that u let the psi down when u go on sand.

the best tyre for sand driving is a standard highway tyre dropped to 18-25psi (depending on the weight carried in the vehicle) I wouldn't tak a CRV or an X-Trail 4wdriving if your paid me, they're a softroader.

What is a "proper 4wd"? Low range?

Not sure what the author meant, but you hit the nail on the head. Without a low range, or some kind of "granny gear", a vehicle can't transfer enough power in a controlled fashion to get proper off road traction. I've been told CRVs do not have a low range, but I don't know for sure. You can "off road" in high range, but it needs to be a pretty solid surface. If you sink down a few inches, odds are -if- you have traction, you may not have the power to get out.

I know 2wds that would make quick lunch of this. Just a proper rear diff beat a lot of open diff 4wd
