  • great points bro' ...I have two covers among many originals and it sounds like it's cleared up thanks and subbed your channel...peace!

  • This made my day. Even after over 2 years, it still is the voice of reason on these matters. I had a cover vid's audio pulled just yesterday.. it was very sad... all that effort in making a personal cover, and unable to share it.

  • Hi my friend, I have a question: I recorded songs from other composers (covers) in my CD , I payed royalties for the company to press 1000 cd's. Them I went to the TV to promote my CD and I play the songs I recorded from this other composers, can I upload to youtube (in fact I already did) but can I try the adsense to monetarize?

  • dude playing bass OVER the ACTUAL tune IS copyright....it's dumb to argue that...what pisses me off is copyright claims on ACTUAL covers, where there is NO original work in it at all besides the notes and lyrics.

  • @KATOMATE01 I've had copyright notices on my vids for ACTUAL covers too. They claim copyright over the musical compositions themselves o.O omlord!

  • very very very very interesting! I am running into this problem now!

  • hard to believe this guys gone! R.I.P. Rob &

    Fuck You WMG

  • This is sooo true! Who doesn't want their fans to promote their work

  • famous bands and singers dont care if someone performes one of their songs at a concert. what makes youtube any different?

  • Maybe the companies think they will get paid for licensing by musicians that do the cover tunes? But that is ridiculous, no one would play 2 grand to cover a rush tune on you tube.

  • Help! I have contacted record companies to ask permission to submit a version of my own, cover song and my own video, to a contest where i could win a recording session, they have not responded back yet and time is ticking for my submission, any advice? Thanks!

  • March on UMG and warner

  • 1 - Thrash WMG

    2 - ???

    3 - Profit!

  • I would really like to understand why I can't play a song by Johann Sebastian Bach. They said that my video covering BWV 1007 was copyright infringement. It's just senseless! Three other videos o mine had the same problem. But I just played an accoustic guitar in two of them . There's not even a background sound taken from the original. The third one, a cover of smoke on the water, was blocked in Gremany. Why? I don't now...

  • Great video. I stumbled upon this after receiving notices on my videos covering Bob Dylan and Etta James that I "may be violating copyright". What the eff? News to me.. isn't this suppose to be what Youtube is all about?? Damn the Man!

  • @mystic0276 what is wrong with his forehead? I don't see anything wrong with it...oh i get it b/c you have a small shlong you feel a need to insult people randomly. It is ok size doesn't matter.

  • Frustrating!!! They’re animals. How do I find out if a song will be rejected or not. Like a magical list somewhere. Someone needs to make a website?

  • 666 likes... no one touch the like button

  • Wow, next the Record labels will go after high school garage bands. Talk about small nasty little men. I will never buy a cd again.

  • Record labels are crapping their pants since the digital revolution. No wonder they go after guys like yourself when they are losing their ass on $15 CD's where half the songs sometimes suck. Now you can buy what you want and pass the filler; hence the dilemma of the fat, gold-blinged, cuban cigar smokin', tie-wearin', thugs who try and sell us what "real music" is. Youtube has spawned a slew of underground artists that before this revolution could've otherwise never made it. Fight the power!

  • amen brother.. just got ads added to my latest cover song and an ad for a burger company on my channel page when it plays.. un..believable.. makes me sick

  • I just replied a video being challenged. It's not even a cover - just a take-off original. I agree with your thankfulness and appreciate you sharing the experience. Hope to figure out the triggers better and Yes I did submit a dispute. Hopefully it was just an automatic-complainer thing and common sense will work out.

    Elliott

  • If this is still a problem for you or anyone else, just dispute it on YouTube. It happened to me and two minutes after I disputed it on the grounds of fair use, my cover was unbanned.

  • Thank you for calming my fury over loss of exposure a bit. I'm happy to find somebody that agrees with me!

  • The music industries attempt at cock blocking what is ultimately free advertising for them is just one of the many signs of an industry in it's death throes. The music industry has done things so badly for so long they don't know any other way. I honestly believe they suffer from the hallucination that all of this free distribution on the internet will just go away. So instead of changing...they are squeezing the last few pennies out of their old model because they aren't relevant any more.

  • Covers are for people that cant write their own stuff. I can't stand cover bands that are all cocky thinking they are musicians. If I tell someone elses joke, am I a comedian? If I copy a painting am I an artist? No the word is fraud. If you wnt to play other peoples music, be a DJ.

  • I had uploaded a video with pictures, ant Mercy Me's cover song I Can Only Imagine, and Youtube forced me to take it down, and "take it down" that is just bull shit!!!!!!!!!!

  • I got done for Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer"!!! WTF

  • RIP Rob

  • @pankakeman800 As I watched this video, I was thinking what excellent points the interesting person was making - then saw your comment indicating that he had died! :-( That's another reason why people shouldn't have their covers (for non-profit) removed - it helps to keep the memory of people's deceased loved ones alive.

  • Great video, it really helped me as a fellow bass-player to get my video through! :) Thumbs up!

  • I just started posting videos in January of this year with a total of about 47, which 6 have been banned. Oddly enough one Red Hot Chili Pepper song from the same CD as another was banned while the other was not, very strange. Copyrights exist so that people other than the artist don't benefit financially. We who cover songs and post them to UTube do not make money on this work. I agree with you especially that our covers promote the music.

  • Yeah, recently my videos got taken down. I was playing bass to Mastodon and Warner got involved.

  • he is gone way too soon.. : (

  • can someone please tell me how he died?

  • Heart attack.

Click on his name in blue next to the subscribe button and there's a note from his wife.

  • we miss you around work, rob. wish you could be here for cannibal corpse on march 13. we will be thinking of you.

  • This was made exactly 1 year before he died.... :' (

  • RIP Rob. You inspired me so much.

  • Puts a lot of things into perspective really. Makes you wonder about people who can't just live and let live. Sad news indeed. RIP Rob.

  • goodnight, sweet prince

    RIP you talented badass

  • somehow none of my primus vids have been removed...maybe not enough views ha ha.

    Great video

    RIP

  • RIP a true LRRG, One the best rhythm masters I had the opportunity to play with even if it wasn't in person. We will all miss you in life and on the tube, with your awesome Bass riffs!

  • RIP Rob. It's really hard to watch the whole video.

  • This was posted a year before his passing...spooky.

rock in peace man, you were a great musician and a really nice guy

  • hmmm..i can't believe i'm sittin' here watchin' you...and then as i go to post...i see that you are...errr....dead? gosh...what i was gonna say doesn't seem so important anymore....RIP Rob....~peace~

  • Yes this is hard to watch. A well spoken and genuine guy. He truly cared about music. Like PDX said he was "all about the music" So missed

  • This is very hard to watch... Rob you are missed!

  • Im so sorry prayers and hugs to the friends and family.

  • R.I.P Rob. You will be missed.

  • Amen to all of that! RIP Rob, you will be missed! I think everbody that sees this video should send it out to all of their friends and subscribers. Let's get the word out for Rob and all of us musicians!

  • R.I.P ROB!!!

  • RIP Rob the Youtubers will carry on for you!

  • RIP Rob

  • rest in peace. <3

  • I assume you are either a "partner" or have "sponsors" and if that is the case this makes perfect sense.

  • I believe that the music industry wants to control who gets seen and who doesn't.

This way they can squash which genres and bands or artists that they please and prevent the public from discovering them on their own. Soon there will no choice except for what the industry gives the public to choose from. That's what this is really about, because excersizing that amount of power translates to MONETARY GAIN. YT as it was, was obviously a threat to their control.

    my 2 1/2 cents

  • ok I just watched the rest of your video. You're wrong about fair use, even if the covers over a track is nonprofit. Fair use is for commentary, reviewing, criticism, or educational purposes (by pulling it apart and judging the material). It's not even "fair use" if you even teach how to play the song if you're also using the original track. Copyright laws are extremely strict, many people are misinterpreting "fair use", but it's there fault that they're not advocating it clearly.

  • are you still at least allowed to play a 100% cover without the ORIGINAL track in the background? My friends and I want to make a cover but we really don't want to get it removed.

  • Things have changed a lot since I made this video. For all companies except Warner, tehre is no problem. With Warner, it will not be a problem eventually, but they are talking their time.

  • amen brother, they do none of this out of good faith its all about the money to them and not the music. you are an amazing player and its a shame people like you get effected by this.

  • I can't believe they pulled your video and it was a cover.

    What the fuck.

  • I can't play Zeppelin anymore. I can only play Primus and Rush. Playing both is awesome, but John Paul Jones is who inspired me to learn to play bass. I am PISSED.

  • You're damn right

  • Thanks for the info.

  • I agree with everything you said. One of the reasons why I bought Megadeth's Rust in Peace, is because I had seen covers posted on youtube. Most people are going to look for a free source of music to find information about things, but with these companies pulling videos, more people are just going to go to websites outside of U.S. jurisdiction, like TPB, which will end up in these companies losing more money.

It just doesn't make any sense, when you play covers live, people want the original.

  • So what exactly are you going to start playing now?

I just now started watching this video and that is definately the biggest bs i've heard i cant believe they wont let you play anymore rush, black sabbith, ect. that dose suck the balls

  • Man your awesome!

  • The same happend to me. UMG, WMG and Sony claimes music from my account... I'm only supporting my own music..

  • I hear you. I posted the VH1 special REO Speedwagon Behind The Music. I got a notice it was taken down for infrigement. Now, this is the problem I am having. There are other behind the music specials on here. The Go-Go's, Guns N Roses, etc. and they are still up plus music videos too. The special was shown on TV. I have seen movies on here besides. It isn't fair!!!

  • im pretty pissed off, within 1 day of my Slave Labor cover (fear factory) being up, they took it down, but if you search that song, theres pages of it, live and just straight from the album

  • your are 100 percent right dood, and yeah, u are an insperation, ur like the reason i started doing bass covers for youtube, keep it going, i love love the megadeth covers you do

  • Yeah. Megadeth's parent company, Sony, does it right. Sure, they detect their music on my videos, but all they do is add links to buying the tune and move on. THAT is the way it should be done....I don;t care if they put a link to their tune on my video as long as they let me do what I do. I hope someone buys off of my video someday so I can pay em back for being so cool.

Thanks for the kind words and rock on!

  • you r right they r just hurting themselves..... and more people are going to stop supporting them, in the end they will lose not us. because the first cut is the deepest and once we get a taste of there nasty cut, we move on to avoid anuthing else......

Paris Lo in las vegas ;)

  • Just to let you know, I tried watching a Mgetadeth video/song, but for some reason it was taken down because of copyright of "Megadeth, Inc.:, whatever the fuck that is. Hope they don't take your Megadeth covers down.

  • Well said, I couldn't agree more. The internet is a very exciting place for music and new discovery, I wish I had this when I was a kid but sadly the record labels are nothing but upset and sore about the new technology and lowered record sales (I guess). Sorry to hear your vids got taken down, a loss for everyone that watches your channel.

  • If you have a facebook account you MUST DO THIS! log onto facebook and search "protest against wmg on youtube" that is the name of my group. join the group and then invite as many people as possible! give me a thumbs up if you are going to join!

  • You are so right man. Record companies are pretty retarded.

  • i had my last account BANNED from youtube, all my videos deleted, and guess what, not a single one was copyright infringing. I had original music that myself and my band wrote in high school and videos of us performing them. We would play some covers yes, but how is that worthy of deleting when there are (like you said) videos of studio audio of a song, with a picture as the video. i couldnt believe that they would delete all my cherished memories from high school and playing with my band

  • i no longer have the original video because my external hard drive crashed. i thought they would be available to see on youtube, but no, all those concerts i had video taped are forever gone. thanks youtube!

btw i really enjoy listening to your channel! keep up the good work!

  • David Sides plays all copyrighted music, but he still gets in the partner program..

So can any person playing covers be a partner?

  • I definitely agree with getting into new bands with cover tunes. I never would have gotten into Death unless I saw your "Pull the Plug" cover. I thank you for getting me into this music that is brutal and beautiful at the same time. Also, I love watching and listening to your covers of songs I love.

  • Also, I hope that you do some more thrash metal covers, your playing is just amazing.

  • It's beautifully brutal. Early Death Metal is the way to go, along with Thrash.

  • Are you sure? Even though the copyrighters say it is!

  • I think you hit the nail on the head when you said about it being automated. If they're going to go to the hassle of removing audio from your videos they should have a solid justification which cannot be obtained from automation as youtube videos, by definition, are highly bespoke.

  • you're totally right!!!!!!!!!

  • if you want to do your own parody of a tv series, say a comedy, if you use the words from the script exactly, is that copyright infringement?

  • It was actually your covers that got me into bands like Iron Maiden and got me into playing Peace Sells by Megadeth.

  • all very good arguements...

    congrats for not going nuts!

  • well said, thank you! i had my first 'warning' the other day and i've only been posting covers for around a month!! i think as long as it's not OBVIOUS you could be trying to pass somebody else's work off as your OWN then it's harmless and as you say, if anything positive promotion of these artists!! ;-)

  • haha ! you are a god! you are so fckin good ! i can only.... laugh....

  • You're an idiot, look at your comment...LOL.

  • haha nice one

  • youre my hero rob haha

  • hey dude, your totally right. and can you believe they SUSPENDED monkybarz account? he is a legend of youtube bass players!! just because of his covers they felt it was needed that they remove him completley from the site

  • man nice this fucking compani is just some bastards i whant to make an online radio HARDSTYLE and i dont now how to do it whitout copyright infringement! if enyone can help plz

  • I don't know about others, but I learned about a lot of bands and music from watching videos on youtube. take them away and they are defiantly going to start losing business for artist and musicians because of the fact that people aren't going to be exposed to the music like they were before.

Man the companys are stupid. WMG and the other companys.. I hope you have fun going down in flames when your artist and bands start to leave you due to your stupidity and people don't even know the music

  • Thats what I say in all my videos

  • They can't take down your videos if its just for entertainment according to the U.S. Constitutional law Section 107.

  • your argument was very articulate, not to mention how true it is that most of the time the artists themselves like these you tube covers. Like metallica has it's own channel for covers made by fans, and Lars even made a video stating how interesting some of the covers are. These record companies have their heads in their asses.

  • just had a video taken down

    they wreckon the stuntman repoprted

what a total load of bolox

google lie they are out of order picking on certain users

  • they target users, since my playlists have LOADS of copyrite infringment videos i found on your tube

FULL MOVIES, but users who appear not to be the owners.

    its BIASED and unfair

  • HAH! Love the argument. Very thought out and intelligent points. They really should be taking down the studio version videos Without permission by the company (although i do like listening to the original studio version)... instead of the cover videos. D:

  • Very good points, Record companies are going way over bounds targeting covering songs, something that's been done for ages for musicians to learn their craft. Umg got me for a steve morse song as well, i'll be hesitant to ever buy music from them again.

  • Yep, I'm never buying any albums that are from bands under WMG again, they will all be illegally torrented. This is sad considering some of my favorite groups belong to them. They have now claimed copyright for 4 of my videos, one of which was private, only contained small bits of the song, and the CD was legally owned by me. How the hell did someone from WMG even see that?

  • lets all bite 'em in the rump!

  • I haven't put any cover lately. They continue with this campaign, or something has changed?

  • Much respect dude. Very coherent, well thought out arguments that make a lot of sense

  • nice fish tank

  • Why all these speculations? Why not actually take it to the judge?

  • Thats exactly what I always say, Free Marketing, why are youtube stopping all this? I mean personally as a muscian and keen listener of music, before buying an album I listen to a band on youtube to see what they are like. Companies are just cheating themselves of new target auidences and money.

  • Great arguments and well thought out!

  • you truly are a legend

  • Funny....I don't feel like a legend. I feel like some sclub playing bass in his living room, but thank you nonetheless.

  • Just 'cos you're in your living room doesn't mean you're not a legend! Your bass playin' is truly remarkable

  • You actually are a legend to me xD Started relearning bass again after i saw your Megadeth covers :)

  • Screw WMG and YOUTUBE watch out Google Bing is here.

  • haha sorry dude i posted that comment right before you said "living room rock gods" so pardon that one.

  • Dude, not to sound stupid. But what does LRRG mean? Thanks

  • A while ago, I was looking up some bands on Youtube when I kept hearing these guys, "Sly and Robbie." So I started looking up their music and I love fell in love. Two weeks ago I brought myself and my friends to their concert here in Chicago.

Literally, if it wasn't for Youtube, I wouldn't have known about S&R, and wouldn't have brought three others.

  • and i love watching you play metal, woohoo :)

  • I agree... youtube can help to promote songs...

  • To me, it seems like major business people (as well as many others) only consider the short-term effects, rather than what will happen in the long run.

btw this is a well-put argument!

  • Wow...that's a really trollish comment, and if you were smart, you would have checked to if I had originals before you spouted off at the mouth with that diatribe. The fact remains...I write and produce my own music and distribute it for free. That hardly makes me a "terrorist", but your comment sure makes you an asshole.

Now go back to your channel and tell your one dorky-looking subscriber how mean I was to you.

  • out of curiosity, what was his comment?

i would love to see it, but there's too many thumbs down

  • I can't seem to see it, either, but basically he said that youtube musicians are terrorists for stealing others music.

  • You are dumb O0

  • There is a way to stop them from taking down your video, check your messages.......

  • wow, I wish more people could see this video. This guy has excellent public speaking skills. Not to mention his argument is ill refutable.

  • taking the you out of youtube one video at a time

  • This is like the 10th vid in a row that I've watched on this subject and yours is by far the most intelligently expressed. I agree that if you're doing a cover, you are in NO WAY stealing from anyone since you're not making any $ from it & you're not preventing them from getting $. ALL you amateur musicians MUST remember that if you DO become big, DON'T SIGN W/ A WMG RECORD LABEL! That's where the REAL sting will come in!!!

  • This just shows the lack of feelings that giant record companies have. This is a great argument and I agree completely. I especially like your idea that these companies are actually destroying themselves by allowing the artists of labels who don't care to get more exposure than their artists.

  • hey! you're totally right...

  • ◊ COPY and PASTE if you want YouTube back to the way it was in 2008 / 2009

◊ copy and paste if you want to keep the YOU in YOUTUBE

◊ copy and paste if you want back the original youtube owners

◊ copy and paste if you want to keep your account

◊ copy and paste if you want Youtube to declare all-out internet WARFARE on Warner Music Group!!! . WMG!!!

  • 2008/2009?

    Where have you been?

  • An actually good spam

  • INDEED!!!! 1000/5!

  • Awesomw Man! Keep doin what you do! I agree completely with you words.

Absolutely it's promotion of the Band.

  • WTF!?!? Record companies and youtube is getting out of control! Amen bro for getting on your soap box! As a fellow bass player and subscriber, I agree with you 100% You are playing something for fun and to share. You're not making money on it or promoting it as your own. Youtube and record companies are shooting themselves in the foot. Rock on man and keep playin! \m/

  • Damn it, why didn't I come across this earlier? I know a lot of your covers but haven't seen this before. Great speech. Totally agree in all points. There's countless bands that I just discovered by messing around in youtube and, believe it or not, bought their albums.

    Up the irons!

  • The recordingcompanys leaders are afraid that your performances are better than their recordings! They want to boycott you because you would " steal their profit". Pathetic cyclopses. And btw your aspects are absolutely right!

  • Great video. You're right about every aspect. Maybe it helps to put this video on my page as well, to favourite this video, rate it 5 stars and subscribe to your channel. It's worth the try

  • You are absolutely right! I really hope they give this little "crusade" if u will up and stop being stupid. And keep on playing more metal ;)

  • F*** them still make vids and write to Les and Geezer and tell them to adress their record companies... I will contact Geddy and Flea if you contact Les and Geezer!!!

If you want to go through with this send me a message and I'll give you my email

  • I' scared. I don't want my Ramones cover to be deleted!

  • Right on man. It makes no sense, what they are doing. The same thing happened with tabs on the net, and now youtube... what else? we cant play along to our cds in the privacy of our own house, cause the neighbours might hear it and enjoy it (and not pay for that experience... ooooh)

  • lol I've just gotta say that this comment is awesome!!!

  • Well spoken.

Regarding the music in general, I feel the same way. Music isn't something that I do for money. If I'd ever get out of the garage with my music my main intrest would still be spreading it. If I could make money on it at the same time, good for me, but greed over money is a shame to mix with it.

  • good point guys, hope that this procedure will end soon

  • i say we have to get wmg kicked off of YT. this is not their playground.

    peAce from japan,

    eLi G., piaNOwarist

  • Great response!

Ayn Rand once said "There is no conflict of interest between rational men." It is obvious that these companies are nothing but irrational, political bullies, and they're getting away with it because of the indoctrination techniques they use to silence people who speak out against them.

  • Hey guy! I was angered when I watched this, but don't worry. It is 5/6 and Pudding Time and One Better are still up. Did someone step up to defend you and other LRRGs, or are these songs not part of WMG or Warner? What can viewers do to help? Keep up the good work!

  • One Better is a Les solo project. Those are not covered under UMG. As far as Pudding Time, that one the music recognition software missed.

  • I never downloaded illegal MP3 songs from the Internet. I'm a musician myself.

Untill now. If a CD or DVD has anything to do with Warner Music Group, I don't buy it, I download it for free from the Internet.

Watch my vid "Stop the War on Audiotracks."

  • I just got a copyright thing from umg, for tommy the cat. I hope they dont screw with me anymore. I love your covers to zodiak. Fight the man.

  • Totally agree with you.

  • The only group benefitting from this is lawyers, who now have to choose whether to re-write the copyright laws or benefitting from litigations if maintaining status quo.

  • Well said.

What are the copyright holders / record companies thinking?

And the answer to that question is: They are not. Their claim of protecting the artists is hollow to say the least and by their action they dont even protect their own stock holders.

The law lags technology and the present culture by quite a bit, so maybe some day the record companies (assuming they are still around) can act positively without actually having to think.

  • its like free publicity...

  • DOWN WITH CORPORATE IMPERIALISM.

in all possible perspectives, whether it is Coca cola company sucking up groudn water from poor villages in India or WMG ordering lots of videos to close cus of one reason or another.

  • dude, wmg and youtube are just being a pain in the ass. it doesn't matter if it's them or not really, here or there, youtube or somewhere else, when a free streaming media website becomes internationally popular, copyright issues will become a topic of debate between major corporations and free rights usually become taken away. honestly, this doesn't sound like democracy anymore.

  • are you still playing Les Claypool side project bands?

  • Yes, I am.
