  • a well executed approach and landing, an epic piece of aviation footage. thanks.

  • that was excellent and horrible at the same time.

  • Excellent approach and landing. We are normally told not to slip the Cessnas with the flaps out because of a pitch down, but no problem here. Just "fly the plane".

  • @sablatnic Why wouldn't you be slipping with the flaps down? Slipping is meant to increase your descent rate without increasing airspeed, same as the flaps. If you're high in your approach to where you need to slip and you're not already at full flaps, you probably should have already put in flaps...

  • Does anyone else think it looks like he stopped in mid air at 0:10?

  • nothing crazy about this, A regular difficult landing on a field, But Nice Skills

  • An amazing and brave pilot. Thanks for showing.

  • hoooooly shit what an awesome approach and landing!

  • Great vid and woow amazing skilld pilot!

  • He went from a crab to a cross control configuration while doing his flare and didn't even flinch on his steep rate of decent. Way to go Bob!

  • @tstevensontube He was x-controlled (aileron left, rudder right) on final *until* the flare, then he undid the slip. But, yup, it was textbook.

  • the technical name is forward slip to land

  • No Notam in the jungle ....lol

  • Slips are usually performed once left, once right and so on.

Here he does it in one direction only. Initially he was probably off-center of the landing strip, isn't?

  • @stupidonduty Actually the standard procedure is to put the low wing into the crosswind, if there is one. Also a good idea to ensure sufficient rudder authority that the fuselage can be maintained parallel to the runway with the wing low. (I don't remember the last time I landed without a slip. Flying taildraggers from the back seat will do it to ya! ;-) But if you're slipping for the purposes of dumping altitude, as here, and there's no appreciable x-wind then it doesn't matter.

  • @practiCalfMRI

there was obviously crosswind in your case where you follow the steep slope of the hill seen you slide only one side. I have learned the procedure by headwind when being too high in final. Therefore it was "left foot, stick right" of course but also vice versa to keep alignment. Thanks anyway for your concern. Kind regards,

  • did you find your father yet?

    v=crCn53q6GHY

  • nice vid :-)

  • wow. that's impressive.

  • the guy and six others are missing since feb 09....check it out

  • He needs a 180 tail dragger and some tundra tires. Those off airport landings can be treacherous with a tricycle gear.

  • @SlamDuncDrummer unless you have balls of steel

  • its called a side slip

  • @stureml - actually a forward slip. Side slip is used for x-wind landings.

  • @Flightkid9 Will you please tell me how exactly a 182 carries 7 occupants? And where are you going to find UAVs with cameras on them in most third-world countries?

  • I am eating a Tomatoe right now.

  • I assume the plane went down during cruise? That would suggest his death wasn't the result of 'taking chances'. The engine does sound a bit ragged here, but I know nothing about that powerplant.

  • @transdrole what?

  • @flynmid ?what?why?who?when?

  • @transdrole faggot

  • How come no flaps

  • @gurdonreynolds He was using them for the landing. It's normal to retract them after touchdown when you need the extra wheel braking

  • This plane went missing with 7 occupants in February 2009. All occupants are presumed dead including Bob Norton, the pilot shown in the video. The plane has still not been found with efforts to find it continuing today using amateur made and operated UAV's.

  • how come the sound is all spaztic???

    Nice Video!

  • why is it call slip??

  • apparently this plane crashed killing 7 people

  • The skill is obvious !

But that's definetely not the good plane for this... the landing gear takes too much strain there !

  • I don't take anything from this guy and this landing. Venzuala, heat, humidity, that close to trees...your lift just starts to fade away....nice landing

  • Your dad does have skills, the takeoff and the landing you posted.

And osushepards question is a good one. Where is the STOL kits?

  • I don't think they teach you how to land on a muddy strip in ground school. Great job man!

  • Not that much of a slip lol.

  • landing was awesome, runway is an bitch

  • Whoever cleans the plane better be on a good wage.

  • The trees are at the exact angle of the glide path. I'm sure this pilot used his propeller to mow them to that shape to use it as his glide slope indicator.

  • Nice job. I always hated slipping Cessna's, but your old man has it down.

  • a bit dangerous standing there don't you think.... very nice piloting skills though

  • not much of a slip..i see insane ones in my flying school..but insanely bad landings as well haha

  • Heck, not much of a slip; he's still looking out the front window! ;) Full flap slips are not recommended in most small Cessnas, however, if you are prepared for an elevator stall (sudden nose pitch down), they can be an option for radial runways.

  • lol..........major pucker factor landing!

  • chop and drop bitches

  • Amazing

  • Awesome flying!

  • Very pretty landing!

  • Whitout use of flaps???

  • @Mariocezarfurtado

I think he retracted them by the time he came close to the camera... you can see them slightly extended still (and retracting) as he rolls by. Hard to spot, but if I'm not mistaken you can see them fully extended at around 0:24 (best view I could find).

  • @Mariocezarfurtado its not safe to do a slip with flaps well full flaps for that matter. 10 or 20 degrees would be a better choice.

  • that is one bad ass strip! must work the limits of the undercarraige...looks painful!

  • An absolutely incredible and skilful landing. Congrats.

  • Guessing it was to bleed off some speed maybe?

Could just be for looks too.

  • @motokid032 Use the slip to bleed off altitude. She will drop like a rock. And then resume normal landing configuration. Or add a touch of power.

  • Slipping a landing is just so cool, especially if it's a short field

  • He needs mud flaps like they use in Alaska Bush. Good job.

  • Nice

  • Very nice slip.

  • Nice Video!

Watch my channel Free3008 with more flight videos

    (Crash Boeing Sterman)

  • skills everyone?

  • That's an ugly plane!!

  • @1shaneyeo not really. and planes are built to fly not look good

  • Skilled Bush Pilot Indeed

  • excellent skills!! is your dad former military?

  • are you the son of chuck norris ??

  • Now that's a real soft field landing!

  • yea...that was pretty impressive.

  • The search for Bob Norton and the others continues. You can follow the search team's progress at our website at: findingbobnorton. org

  • BUMBACLOT!

  • Flaps _are_ on during landing and retracted immediately after touchdown. (look closely). as the plane goes by the camera you can see the flaps raising to their final position. Raising the flaps on touch-down reduces lift/ increases stall and keeps the plane on the ground on roll-out.

  • this is retarded

  • Those be some rude-boi flying skills.

  • Beautiful fwd slip!

  • Can you ask your Dad why he chose to land by side-slipping it in instead of using wing flap? Genuinly interested not being critical.

  • makes me wonder if this plane ever has a 100 hr. inspection

  • Comment removed

  • I have a desire to do bush flying in countries where people need help. How do I get involved? Who do I need to contact, and what additional ratings beyong the PPL would I need?

  • @Gerardsp CPL. PPL won't do anything for you as it's suggested "PRIVATE". Do CPL with a night VFR and a 200 series (206, 210) rating, you will need CSU/RG but do it on something cheaper like a P28R. Don't send resumes get in country and don't have less then 200hrs.

  • @Gerardsp I would also suggest getting some high performance endorsement and some time with it.

  • cesna rally, nice video

  • Thanks for the video. You should post some more :-)

  • Excellent landing! The pilot's skill is obvious.

  • @osushepherd YES! I was thinking the very same thing..

  • Great job!!

  • superb!

  • very very good indeed

  • very skilled landing, i like it, you got my thumb up

  • i saw the YV registration and was about to ask you if it was in venezuela, but then i read the full descrpition

  • amazing!!!

  • Excellent landing! But one thing I'm always curious about with AMA and MAF; why do none of your aircraft have STOL, VG, or wingtip extension kits on them? With the hot, humid, and unimproved places you go in and out of, I don't understand why you do so with a stock aircraft. If your organization can afford a Skylane, you can definitely afford some lift augmentation.

  • @Nununda Because lift kits comes at the price of range (more drag, less speed put simply) and when your flying to dirt strips with no fuel reserves, ecenomy becomes more important. Especially considering how remote these areas are, getting to them requires substantial amounts of fuel. I see where your coming from but theres alway more to the story.

  • awesome flying. now this is a good slip to landing!!!! good piloting!!!

  • muito bom esse piloto é fera!!

  • and using only half the runway....

  • me gustaria que tu papa fuera mi instructor de vueloooooooo que BARBARO que aterrizaje y que despegue felicidades

  • Congratulations to the pilot, fantastic landing. Way to go.

  • Wow!

  • Amazing flying skill... Hope to emulate that one day ... Nice job... keep em coming ..

  • That is a beautiful, but dangerous job. But helping the natives is worth the risk, I'm sure!

  • That was just awesome, thank you for posting.

  • how much times in a day you wash your plane??

  • That was beatiful :')

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your father's disappearance. What he was doing was noble, and truly incredible for the people he was helping.

  • I like how you can see the plane's shadow as it's coming down the hillside. Sweet landing. That looked like fun.

  • That's a great landing!

  • where was the slip? did a passenger have an accidental bowel movement again? lol jk

  • one person apparently shit themselves in a cessna when they had a bit of a "slip" while landing

  • I am so sorry to hear about the missing pilot and its passengers... It is such a shame if other people have hijacked it.... I am very sorry and will pray for Bob and the rest... Is there any news my friend?

  • I am not trying to heckle but why not use the flaps? I know its a good skill to have, because I fly a Citabria 7eca, but why not the flaps?

  • @907AlphaKilo look close at the inner wings beetween 0:15 and 0:25 ... hard to see, but they are actually out. He just retracted them after touch down to decrease the lift and gain more traction to the wheels.

    Anyway, great piloting *thumbs up*

  • Your father has a beautyful job. In the future this is the way I want to go in aviation.

Soy venezolano. Los he visto actuar en el sitio. Tanto es asi, que el gobierno los expulsó, por peligrosos.

    Atencion. Gente dañina.

  • Someone can't fly like this..

  • im adventist to! cool vid!

  • he doesnt Flare much on the landing.

  • Congratulations Mr Norton. For this wonderful slip landing. I want to congratulate you for you to put your life in risk to help people. you touch me.

  • the runway..

  • Only few motor pilots are able to slip ........ even a right side slip!!!!!!!!

    Very professional!

I like to slip too ......... it´s an untypical configuration BUT it works so well,

if you have to reduce altitude very quick without speeding up.

All the best to you ........ fellows from germany

  • Awesome!!!

  • Once again I can simply say: WOW !!!

  • Incredible flying!

  • absolutely gorgeous slip! well done :)

  • Nice, smooth forward slip.

  • "Goddammend shit, my PC crashed in every flight,... I have the Flusi,... Microsoft Flightsimulator FSX..."

    Elia @ Joshua

  • awesome flying.

  • siiiiiiick. i dont fly but you can tell that is no joke. looks like he's dropping straight down

  • skill

  • nice piloting :)

  • Great!! nice landing:)

  • hell that's a bumpy runway, but an awesome pilot

  • how do you take off on that wet strip?!!

  • Nice landing!!

  • perfect landing on not an airstrip....but a dirt driveway =D

  • This is just a regular base-to-final approach, not big deal really. There is no even wind as you can see by the trees not moving.

  • @cesario7777 ...its still a slip...to a very tough airport...u cant deny him that

  • WHY DID HE NOT LAND ON THE GRASS IT TAKES MUCH BETTER CARE FOR THE AIRPLANE

  • Not being critical - this is a well executed, high skill manoeuvre - but I think he either had a flap failure or was doing it for practice. Flapless short-field approaches are not normal ops in a C206. The same approach angle can be achieved with 40deg flap.

A joy to watch - a skilled pilot doing his stuff. Low-time pilots, please don't try this technique into a short field without specific training.

  • Not being critical - this is a high-skill manoeuvre - but I think he was either doing it for practice or the flaps had failed. Flapless landings are not a normal short-field operation in the C206. An equally steep approach could be flown with 40deg of flap:- the normal configuration for short-field landing.

As others have said - a joy to watch a skilled pilot doing his stuff. Low-time pilots, please don't try this technique without specific training - especially into such a short strip.

  • HA hitting puddles on the runway! awesome

  • 'scuse the stupid question but what does it mean to "land with a slip"? I mean... what is that 'slip'?

  • Not a stupid question at all! When you land with a slip, you kick in rudder either left or right to make the nose of the airplane point in a slightly different direction than the flight path. This exposes the side of the aircraft to the wind, it then creates more drag. This technique decreases forward airspeed and increases the decent rate, making it very useful to get the aircraft in to short fields or down a slope on a high approach.

  • @piperpilot235 Ah, I get it. Thank you very much for your answer. =)

  • Very nice piloting!

  • Wow. Amazing.

  • very good,no flaps with strong cross wind, excellent

  • wow.....that so amazing....cool bro. you must be proud to your dad

    very experience flyers huh

  • good pilot !!

  • if you want to fly here in Venezuela you must be a cowboy!

  • Wow He is good pro pilot

  • checklist, after landing: wash airplane

perfect landing, nice to see how paralell the gliding path is in relation to the trees..

  • "Turbomäßig geil, einfach Herrlich!!!"

  • ótimo piloto,isto é um belo pouso.

  • Now thats how you land a plane....nice job!

  • close call lucky!

  • i remembered doin side slip landing frm base during my cpl training back in those days...but this vid is simply superb, nothing like it!

  • great landing

  • That's not a particularly steep slip, but it could be a safe slip for the plane, which would mean the pilot is wise enough to know the limitations of either his skills and/or the aircraft's ability. Hey, any landing in the jungle (or anywhere) without breaking anything is a good landing.

  • awsom stuff dude!

  • listen to that fuckin engine too

  • FUCK YEA!

  • what's a slip?

  • he is good
