  • What I really admire about this video besides the fantastically drawn apple is the fact that you take the time to tell us each color and explain the steps. Many great artists on youtube dont that so I humbly thank you for your generosity.

  • kazanjianm Hi, I found this video quite useful but for my project I have to draw 6 stages of an apple and I'd like to know how to create a detailed drawing of a realistic appe using just shading with a pencil. Please help :)

  • I'm an artist as well and it was great to see your video as an introduction to this technique.

Though for future reference I really would appreciate it if you had the light at a different angle so we can see past the shadow of your hand. Great job though.

  • @SynneDennis Great suggestion and I think that I will try to implement it! Sorry about the late reply! -Merrill

  • Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!! Your draw is much prettier than the original!

  • wekk done

  • is that a picture of an apple? or did you actaully used a real apple to draw

  • my love for drawing has been renewed, but now i want an apple... ;)

  • when i was just 5 years old, i started drawing everything around my house,,, actually my father knows how to draw too... and now im 14 years old, i can draw, paint whatever around me, just like what they say, " practice makes perfect ".

  • Wow, what a nice idea, I usually rendered my pictures in different ways, but I tried this way now, and I kinda like it. I might not use it every day, but it seems to be great for quick studies.

  • you acctualy CAN mix colours together (marker) use copic papper, the you should ALREADY have colours ready, then. make the basic color, then QUICKLY, make the second layer ON IT, the ink will be still wet, copic papper doesent absorve ink quickly,

  • subscribe bitches srry always wanna say it , nice explaining & awesome drawing

  • how long did u take to do that? 1 hour?

  • look at them apples :D

  • Wow, you're amazing! The realism is great!

  • very realistic! We will be drawing fruits and I think this will be a great help!

  • Do you happen to have a life? by the way that's a compliment! :D hahaha nice job!

  • Hello, Merill:

This demonstration is, in my opinion, what sets apart a true artist from an ordinary

one of the crowd. I truly thank you, on behave of my art students and I. With your permission, I'll show this video to my class.

  • i would eat this apple :)

    nice work

  • this is nice

  • what brand of copic markers mostly used by the manga artist?????

    PLEASE ANSWER...TNX ^_^

  • In the future could you show what shade the markers and colored pencils are a little more and maybe hold them to the camera or say the name please? I had a bit of trouble guessing what colors you were using and the lighting didn't seem to help.

Very nice apple by the way

  • great! i adore it! really helpful! honestly, i didn't know about the blending stick and its quite something, i like what you can do with it

  • thanks thanks thanks for sharing this.

  • great job! it started to look realistic really quickly. I just think that the outline takes away from the realisticit. otherwise- great job! You look different from your voice. =D

  • The blue at the top was distracting me the whole time. but yeah the apple looks GREAT

  • amazing :|

  • good job mate :)

  • Very impressive and informative. (like they say in baseball... GOOD EYE)

  • do you just use crayola?

  • O_O

  • But what if you don't have a blending stick, what would be a good substitute for a blending stick? What other thing can I use as a blending stick?

  • omg omg omg ur drawing looks so realistic!

  • one compund word.....BADASS

  • muy buen video

    un saludo desde colombia

  • i love this!

  • fantstic video ty for sharing your tips and techniques..i would have never thought of this..

  • Great job. The clarity and depth of your drawing is so realistic. Do you have an opinion on the Copic markers? Thank you for sharing.

  • In every marker tutorial why don't they mention the paper they use? what paper you use? because normal paper will bleed.

  • @holohulolo use smooth bristol :) it doesn't bleed through. also, prismacolor does have a tendency to bleed through the lines, and since i'm no expert, i have no solution to that, but I think it's just prismacolor because i know that copic markers don't do that.

  • I always just used to use the white pencil to blend. I never knew about blending sticks until your video, I'll have to look into that. Thanks.

  • OH MY FUCKING GOD YOUTUBE STOP FUCKING WITH ME!!! I've always wanted to know how the hell you use these damn markers.. I get to the part where you say "now this is where the magic happens" and it freezes!!!! I look in the comments and I see "dude! this cleared so much up for me" -_- oh my goddddd i want to see this video.

  • dude! this cleared so much up for me. thanks

  • good job ,apple guy,lol

    great.

  • Simply amazing.

  • "Grandmotherfucker" at 4:49!!! HAHAHAHA!!!

Anyway, your drawing looks realistic. The best guide i've ever seen here on youtube. 5 stars for the excellent work.

  • I appreciate the big compliment you wrote me paulkev09........And im glad you liked the "Grandmotherfucker"!!!!!

    -Merrill :)

  • So can you tell me where i can get these pencils?... and if so how much are they?... and i live i the U.k so... Ya...

  • Online is probably your best bet...Check out the "Supplies I Use" section of my website for details!

    -Merrill :)

  • Wow! :) Which ones the real apple! :D Pretty good! I'm definatly going to be using this tequnique! Should probably work on my spelling too! :P

    Amizing!

  • LOL Thank you so much for the kind and FUNNY comment! BTW- YOUS SPELLZ GRATE!!!! (put that in a spell checker!!!) :)

  • Se på mine video. Du vil sikkert bli sjokkert

  • Hey

please watch my video with my drawings Im only beginner.

    and please SUCRIBE :)

  • i have a question if you can help me i mostly draw cars but i draw a little bit of everything when it comes to adding color i don't know where to start.....in your drawing of the apple how did you get the colors to blend so well?....i know the same concept works for all types of drawings pretty much thats why i ask....i just wanna get better with markers...so do i need to add the colored pencils to?

  • OOPS! I missed your comment! Sorry about that. The color pencils help because they blend together. Markers do not (but they can be layered)....You might like this approach.....I will send you my latest video....I added a step to this process....Thanks for commenting!

    -Merrill

  • Absolutely marvellous !!!!

Thank you for the idea..... works great !!!

    Please continue the fabulous work...

  • Im so glad that it worked out for you!

    -Merrill

  • what kind of markers is this? like any product/brand names? thank yoU!

  • Prisma and ad chartpak.....I have descriptions on my website. Thanks for checking it out!

    -Merrill

  • Thats Friggin amazing, I didnt think that was possible with just crayons and markers, excellent work!

  • Many alien visitors feel that way, but yes it is possible! LOL ( That is an AWESOME channel name!) I appreciate your kind comment!

    -Merrill

  • @kazanjianm No problemo, us aliens, like to use the color, "true black" too much! and light can't penetrate it and most of our pictures are invisible! :o

  • WOW!!! I wish I could do that!!

  • Give it a try (I didnt start drawing until I was 20 years old!). I recommend that you start out with my step by step drawing videos (especially the ones for the eye) and then work your way up to this! Good luck! I hope that you try it!

    -Merrill

  • all i have to say is... Sham WOW!!!!!!!

  • Thank you braydenflog!!!!

    -Merrill :)

  • @kazanjianm lol

  • This is awesome~! I thought of something like this, but someone told me it would look choppy, so I didn't try... Question: would the blending come out the same if it were the paper tortillions/blending stumps??

  • Yeah it should.....I dont like using them with color because you have to buy so many....Im cheap LOL! I used the wax stick which is pretty cool to use! Its a product called "Prismacolor Art Stix colorless blender". Its like three bucks and it lasts forever!!!

  • Cool~ I'll definitely get one when I have money~ Art supplies for school takes too much funds away. D:

  • The trick is.....buy stuff that you can use which is not called "art supplies"...unfortunately, the prisma pencils and the wax stick is one of a kind! Good luck!

  • I never thought of using that technique with the markers like that. Great tutorial. Keep up the good work!!

  • Im so glad that I can help! :)

  • love this turorial and technique! nice work!

I tried looking for the wax blending stick on dickblick but couldnt find any. Do you know where else I could find it?

    :)

  • The brand name is "prismacolor art stix". Pearl Paint Carries them.....I have seen them in a lot of places on line. Thanks for the kind words and for subscribing! Happy new year!....And dont be shy if you ever have questions!

    -Merrill

  • thank u so much! and Happy new year to you too! :)

  • This is a great tutorial. I have been using prisma and copic markers for years and my main thing is colored pencils. I have never combined them. Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick. I'm really hyped up about this technique. Wow.

  • That makes me so happy Estherfay! Let me know how it goes!

    -Merrill :)

  • Can you mix the colors, with those markers???

  • Great question! There is a blender that can be used but it makes the colors slightly bleed in to each other, not necessarily blend. The blender is made of the alcohol mixture that the colors are mixed in to (In other words...the blender is the mixture minus the color). If you compare it to paint, there is no question that paint mixes better than the markers. Even color pencils mix better than the markers, but to a lesser extent than the paint. Thanks for subscribing! Nice to meet you

    -Merrill

  • awesome drawing looks very nice, I'm thinking that I will buy those markers, but I've never saw them live, so are they some kind of special markers? Also when you draw with one to another layer won't that marker get color on it? E.g. when you draw with black then you go through it with yellow, will the yellow have a black mark on the end (hope you know what I mean). And how much does it cost? Thanks

  • They are called illustration markers. The top brands are prismacolor and AD. You could get them online. If you want, I have a link to supplies on my website to merrillk (dot com) to the supplies that I use. Thanks for the comment!

  • awesome drawing!

  • Thank you mcrocci :)

  • I do sketches and tattoos, it's very interesting seeing people doing color on paper

  • I used to work on canvas and panel but now Im having more fun working on paper.....Not in this video, but usually, I incorporate digital images (printer) and tie them in w/ my drawings. Thanks for checking the video out!!!

    -Merrill

  • acrylic painting on canvas?

    @kazanjianm

  • I definitely prefer oils. Some people can manage acrylics amazingly well, but they dry too fast for me. Oil works great on paper if the paper is primed. Gesso works, but believe it or not, color pencil works even better!

  • pencils are counted sketch drawing, but I prefer Gesso and acrylics since oil drives me nuts until I find a place to lay it out

but colored pencils rock no doubt, especially those that are easy to erase

  • After tinkering w/ everything for years....I finally have somewhat of a process down for when I create art. 1.) Pencil Drawing w/ Layer of illustration marker 2.) Layer of color pencil 3.) Layer or layers of oil paint. 4.) Digital touch ups (photoshop)....I have a demo of this on my channel page....I decided to subscribe to your channel. I am looking forward to seeing your work! Its great to meet you! Pls. keep in touch!

    -Merrill

  • sure, subscribed to you too, but after 6 years of learning art, I decided tattooing and sketching is best P:

it's all taste matters, to be honest

  • absolutely!

  • Your apple looks even more delicious than the one on the picture. Thank you!

  • Thank you ideenfee!!!! :):):)

  • Hi,i'm a painter too.(Actually,i'm painting only with watercolors,only and only because i can mix the colors,i love it.)PERFECT,5/5!!!

  • It means a lot hearing that from a fellow artist!

    -Merrill

  • I LOVE IT!

  • wow that was amazing...i never thought an apple could look like that on paper...i usually do the simple version :P nice work

  • I appreciate the kind words Hockeylife31! Thank you for checking it out!
