Glorious!! I never heard Miss Price sing this aria which is one of my absolute aria favourties! Why didn't someone sit her down and just say : you need to do this opera. Period. WOW. It is as glorius as her Visse d'arte, Summertime, My man has gone, which I am more familiar with.
La Boheme, however, is special for me and makes me admire her talent even more. Brava absolute!!

What sumptuous singing, and sung with meaning and musicality. It truly is sad that she never sang this--or many other Puccini and Verdi roles--except for recorded selections that leave us begging for more.
Thanks to Onegin for finding all these marvelous singers and arias!
She didn't like the role. She told an RCA executive "I get no message from Mimi," and later said in an interview she was "too healthy for coughing fits" which explained also why no Violetta.
She then added, to the RCA exec, that Musetta was another story! Ha! Apparently that idea didn't get very far. This was back when Caballe was chosen to record it with Solti and Domingo.
I absolutely agree that she would have made an excellent Mimi. I think she was type cast though into playing regal figures. If you look at most of her roles, they were portraying queens, countesses, and princesses. Perhaps opera houses felt she had too commanding and vibrant stage presence to pull off a sick and meek character like Mimi effectively.

Judging by the aria, Mimi is one more role that La Magnifica should have sung but never did, like Verdi's Elisabetta and Violetta to name just two.

Ms Price sang Puccini in great rank; I don't know because she didn't sing never Boheme. Here she is princely. Thanks Onegin for this
