How does being unable to walk make you a zombie? Wouldn't this be: "Paralyzed cockroach cured by antidote?" Overdramatizing is fun but I think they're taking it a step too far here.
@mew9934234 It's interesting though that it's not actually paralyzed, it just can't initiate movement. This is also the case in humans with severe Parkinson's: they can catch a ball if you throw it to them, but they can't hand it back to you. That's what's zombielike about the condition.
Understanding why brains (of both humans and cockroaches) are wired up that way could lead to considerable advances in neuroscience (and potentially bring about the zombie apocalypse).
Those pesky humans just can't stop interfering. Just when we found out how to make zombie cockroaches, they come out with an antidote. OK, then... We shall free the chickens and the cattle from human enslavement.
by the way I also think the jew should be studied from a biological point of view I mean there is no other "race" of people who has managed to infiltrate any society, showing themselves apparently innofensive, but bringing down culture and society while weakening, sickening and festing over it. I mean not trying to be "racist" but what other group or tribe of people has done so for centuries? they want to reproduce like in thousands (abraham's story), and they are sneaky. and blood sucking.
Why are the people in these comments so terrible? 'HURR DURR I HATE COCKROACHES! LEARNING ABOUT BRAIN CHEMICALS? LOL NOPE DON'T SEE HOW IT HELPS ANYONE URGH IT'S AN ICKY BUG EWWWWWWW I DON'T LIKE IT WE SHOULD KILL ALL OF THEM EVERRR'
God damn, I feel like I'm losing brain cells reading any of it. Gotta move on to another video so I won't need a brain shot to revive ME.
@edwinsandovala it will help in the future when we need something like this. (my cousin is a math professor and he told me all about how finding things out will help later answer questions never been answered [because he has done several] )
@edwinsandovala Its pretty safe to assume that the next great drug to treat alzheimers, parkinsons, huntingtons, etc. will have gone through these kinds of trials. How do you think new medicines are invented? Most of the developments that have helped humanity the most come from lines of investigation people criticised as pointless. For example, Lord Kelvin is said to have called electricity 'useless'.
this is so stupid yea spend money on stupid insects sercously that is stupid forget the famine in world lets save these stupid insects what a wast of money and time
@1c2a3s5e11y well, instead of stopping fammine I would invest on education, because poor uneducated people have a lot of kids, who are very likely to stay poor and unneducated. I say, prevent famine by preventing overpoulation.
Process is simple: Neurotoxins numb the brain that was telling the roach to kick fast and survive. Now the brain that is awake is that controls common tasks, such as walk, drink eat or lie flat......
Haven't you been able to witness an accident survivor at the spot?
@ZachCraft Don't these people irritate you? it seems I can't read the comments section on a single new scientist video without the naive cacophony of 'you should've cured cancer instead' cries.
All the time. These people don't realize that a lot of amazing breakthroughs come from accidents, or from other fields that would normally be totally unrelated.
Who knows, we could end up using what was shown in this video to revive people in different circumstances.
@uberdeater How, if you were given the money, would you go about stopping the effects of alzheimers? Personally, I'd invest it first in research to document the effects of chemicals on the activity of a model for the human brain, starting with as simple an animal as possible. Say, for example, a cockroach.
@uberdeater Thats the problem with the average person, they are so short sighted. Lets break this down so you can understand the significance. They found a chemical that restores nerve function to damaged tissue....... Studies like this help them understand how this damage is reversed and they can then apply that knowledge to helping PEOPLE with damaged nerve tissue. Paraplegics, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, the list goes on and on. So try not to be so short sighted.
@uberdeater Actually the zombie cockroach condition here is highly analogous to Parkinson's Disease in humans, so understanding how it works in much simpler species could lead to treatments for humans.
Ummm... What was the point of those scientist of making a cure for those cockroaches? I mean cockroaches need to leave earth already they have been around too long..
Cockroaches need to leave? They deserve to be here as much as anyone/thing else. In fact, considering how much Humanity broke and left to rot, we're the least deserving of life on Earth. The cockroach has survived millenia by adapting and evolving. The carnivorous spider survived by adapting and evolving - becoming the perfect hunter.
THEY should die because we find them ugly/disgusting/useless? Intelligent as humans are, I find their hypocrisy leaves room for improvement...
I like how so many people are SO upset by seeing a cockroaches life saved that they don't even stop to fucking IMAGINE how saving a living thing from paralysis and brain damage might be umm. A good thing? Just maybe?
@BlastAchmed If they can figure out how to rescue a cockroach, perhaps they can figure out how to save humans too. I'm pretty sure that's what aGasmaskProcession is hinting at.
@miamiwax shush! if the poison adapts to humans, you'll be damn happy they found an antidote! we wouldn't want a zombie apocalypse to occur, now would we? XD
why are they researching this? are they planing to interfere with this wasp's surviving instinct it's evolved over probably millions of years? Leave the wasps be, i hate the roaches anyway :P
@wiseye61 I would imagine they are researching this not as a way to combat wasps, but as early biomedical research, possibly for treating things like brain damage and paralysis. Just a guess, but, especially with cutting edge science, discoveries in one area to tend to "bleed" over into others, and many new medical treatments have come from observing and trying to replicate animal behaviours and/or systems.
@jodo725 i meant it in a general way that being eaten inside out must hurt as hell...and maybe scientists think bugs dont feel pain now ask the bug if he doesnt feel pain
@mexicanpowerputo Well a great deal of research has been done over many decades by doctors an anethesiologists to understand pain and the nervous system. Insects don't really think or 'feel' anything because they don't have nervous systems connected connected to brains that are capable of feeling pain the way mammals do. They simply react to threats or damage and scurry away. But I guess it would still suck ass to be a cockroach being eaten alive.
The point isn't to 'save' the cockroach, the point is to understand how the chemicals effect the roach brain. A. Compressa injects and certain chemical to 'zombify' it, so perhaps it was out of curiosity to figure out what chemical would reverse the process.
The cockroach is just a parasite, thats contamines our food and hospital, now we have about 600 per person in the world, thaey have more than 300 milion years and now they find his right predator, the jewel wasps came to live in your garden and backyardgan, its the nature making your job, some thing sent by god to crontol this specie, at day they are into the toillet or at your yardtrash and you cannot see, at night, they are into your kitchen contamining your food, and arounding your face at bed
@bymadan wow you're so shortsighted:P yeah the jewel wasp is propably gods punishment to cockroaches for contaminating your food...or its the naturally developed predator in the food chain for cockroaches.
btw they don't contaminate your food as they don't cary human deceases, you just don't like em because they want to eat your foodd.
yes i have. and now comes the big shock. hold on to your seat! those germs and bacteria are there even if the cockroach is not!!! badaboom shock and aww.sure they cary bacteria. so do you and everybody else. its about what bacteria you cary. the most it can do is make your bread go stail. and another surprise for you, its gonna do that anyway!
Eating and shiting, no purpose to exist! Now there is also shit coming out of your mouth, what went wrong? Well I know, cockroach didn't clean you out!
lol... now you're talking shit to me... on youtube. Say whatever you want, shit aint gonna happen. How the fuck you gonna know its me if we bump into each other anyway? All i can say is, Bring it cockroach boy!
Wasps are going to take over the world. I have been killing tens of thousands of them every week for a month and a half, and they keep coming. Yes, I found the colony and destroyed it, but many of them escaped. The ones that are left are apparently the tough smart aggressive ones.
I sincerely doubt more than a thousand dollars was spent on this experiment. Besides, what will we do when the zombie-nazi-robot-cockroach apocalypse comes, and we don't have anything to inject into their brain?
wow, this is intresting, and so many possibilities!
this could help research to revive brain dead people and autistic people!
this isn't just helping roaches, people, it's helping advance technology, and out understanding of the human brain, and what effects it, i really don't see how you dont think this is interesting
But that'll have to depend on whether the condition is external or internal. Autism is quite often caused internally by genetic defects, which cannot be changed...for now.
@superkartz obviously you're not seeing the bigger picture. :/ I doubt the point of this research was to help roaches. It seems like they're testing a drug to help people who are braindead. Isn't that a worthy cause?
Maybe the cockroaches will form a giant shield to shield the city being attacked with a nuclear missle in order to repay us...Or I just dont get enough sleep to make rational answers
its a possibility that we can somehow raise the dead. This is just an example of what it will be like. Its possible but we wouldn't be using HO's and inject a dead guy's brain :P
how are cockroaches nature's perfect lifeform? i understand that they live through dangerous conditions, but they are far from perfect. please enlighten me.
now no matter how much i hate cockroaches this is completely true we must save them for one day they may evolve into something greater than human kind will ever be. Indestructible, Intelligent, etc.
and i got here how...

Zombies are coming all, better stock up.

This is important folks!
If we can prevent roaches from turning into zombies, maybe we can prevent ourselves from turning into zombies as well.

i hate cockroaches
MySongfreak 2 years ago 3
that must be very painful for the roach to be eaten alive, i mean wow. what a way to die. :(
bannaloverx25 2 years ago 2
wow, this is intresting, and so many possibilities!
this could help research to revive brain dead people and autistic people!
this isn't just helping roaches, people, it's helping advance technology, and out understanding of the human brain, and what effects it, i really don't see how you dont think this is interesting
Tullidar1 2 years ago 2
But that'll have to depend on whether the condition is external or internal. Autism is quite often caused internally by genetic defects, which cannot be changed...for now.
slateflash 2 years ago
ofc ....who would of though that we are helping roaches here?

@superkartz obviously you're not seeing the bigger picture. :/ I doubt the point of this research was to help roaches. It seems like they're testing a drug to help people who are braindead. Isn't that a worthy cause?
Omboth 1 year ago
that's retarded why would you help the roaches

Maybe the cockroaches will form a giant shield to shield the city being attacked with a nuclear missle in order to repay us...Or I just dont get enough sleep to make rational answers
chickengone2 2 years ago
the technology can be used to possibly restimulate "dead" cells in the brain that dont get stimulated by dopamine anymore.
rruubbiinn 2 years ago
its a possibility that we can somehow raise the dead. This is just an example of what it will be like. Its possible but we wouldn't be using HO's and inject a dead guy's brain :P
MadnessReturns 2 years ago
no, because unlike a dead person. the cockroach is very much alive, hypnotized is a better word than zombified.
Kastralis 2 years ago
this is just my theory not an actual fact.
