@LieOr1 There is a lot of room for growth in Laos but what needs to change is the economic policies. The gov't is fearful of losing power and that will always restrict economic growth. The gov't can seize your company or belongings without any reason, it has happened. The economy will never grow in that environment. I don't know all the answers or what to do, but I do know that open trade and tourism may slowly change Laos for the better.

The battle for the plain of jars was for control of the natural invasion route into Vientien. The NVA wanted it so they could invade and take over laos. The CIA supported Vang Pao to stop the invasion as well as to tie up as many NVA headed to South Vietnam in the process.

I don't like the communist gov't because it represses the people, Lao and Hmong, but I know the only way it can change is from within. Many Hmong people here want Laos isolated and I don't agree with it. Many of these people are old and their views will vanish with them. They live in the past, I want a better future.

@LieOr1 I can't speak for everyone, but from what I see, they want the human rights abuses taken care of first. Nobody will care or even think of going or investing in Laos if they will not be treated fairly. My parents have gone a few times and had no problems. My prof has told me that the gov't have taken big steps to ensure fairness. If there is oppurtunity and equal treatment, people will invest in Laos.
