Paracel Islands and Spratly Islands belong to Vietnam. In 20th century, Vietnam had to fought foreign invaders, so it didn't have enough forces to protect its own islands. China has taken advantage of that to seize Paracels illegally from Vietnam in 1974 and many islands in Spratlys from Vietnam in 1988. Also, Taiwan illegally occupied Itu Aba island in Spratlys.
