The Dutch version of our beloved Jethro Tull, though Jethro leave them miles behind song wise. Love Jan's playing, this group are F**cking amazing. Trips all around, and really enjoyed.
A penalty to be born at a time when the term "song" was not used in its original sense, where rock progressive is seen like a sound weak. It's regrettable.
Focus is a amazing band. My condolences for who thinks unlike.
Bought "Moving Waves" Album at K Mart 1970's for 99 cents, played it to death. Heard "Hocus Pocus" one night out fishing at the local lakes, never been the same since. Love this band then and always.
These guys were so great it's a shame they only get remembered for Hocus Pocus. They were so much better than that. The whole "Moving Waves" album is awesome. My opinion of course.
I think some kudos should go to the camera work and real-time shot selections of this video's recorders. Consider the video shot selections and timing for the first 2:32, for starters. One has toi admit, the early 70's personnel, musicians and carmera crew, both seem to have had their sh#t together, for all the alleged cocaine and acid in their bloodstreams...
I only just got introduced to this tune. First time I heard it I thought it was nuts... but damn... it's amazing... how many tunes can you say have the balls to be as experimental and creative as this?
I was listening to this because a friend of my said I would love it. So I start, thinking I had never heard it before. Turns out while hearing the singers I've heard it over a billion times because my father always listens to it. Haha, never realized it's so amazing! :)
close minded comment, no better than a dubstep fan mocking 70's music.
realize music is an art and not a period. Yes this is a good song, but there are many talentless 70's bands who are far less musical than many current rappers/samplers/techno artists.
A difference of opinion doesn't automatically indicate a closed mind. You can admire and appreciate and be inspired by rappers/samplers/techno artists and still accept that they are talentless. Yes there was much crap in the seventies without doubt. To prove my point, consider the band Sex Pistols. However much people might like them you can't argue with the fact that they were talentless garbage. What would you consider a talented rapper? Eminem perhaps?
Eminem has some talent for sure. Possibly not in his later (current) years, but 10 years ago when he was battling his way up through the masses of talentless hacks he did. I would consider RJD2 to be a more than talented sampler and the list of talent in 'techno' is too vast for this text box (but Deadmau5 is a good example for his talent at his live shows)
Just heard this on the radio while driving home from school, and I fell in love with it immediately. The moment I got home, I looked up the name of it, and now I'm here.
Tom Scholz from Boston modeled his Hammond C3 organ sound after he heard HPbyF. I personally shit a brick when I heard it when it came out, but I could live without the yodeling and spastic singer noises.
you can tell the rest of the band hates his yodeling or at least find it ridiculous. look at the guitarist's expressions while the lead singer does those awesome yodels. I read in another post that there was some tension between the two. makes sense.
Focus has fame for their crazy "Midnight Special" performance of Hocus Pocus, in which they show fantastic chops combined with unrestrained craziness. This video adds fantastic musical depth, before they regress into a more restained Hocus Pocus performance at roughly 2:33.. These guys had *fantastic* chops. Way ahead of their time. I wish they were all this age today.
Clearly they're getting sick of playing that number. It's rushed, The drums are over worked and there is a CRUDE ending which was meant for comic effect.
@BoltzmannsBrain Wish i could have fucking been with along side you, i could only imagine how god damn amazing it must have been... Too bad i was born in 1988, though.
How come this is the first time I listen to Focus.. WHERE THE FUCK HAVE I BEEN? Wandering on the internet 24 hs and NEVER listened to them. Luckily I'm young (16) and can listen to them for the rest of my life. Simply amazing. Made me smile like A BIEG SMILE. Thanks for putting this video.
@NickleJ wow yeah it is great. I like this one more because, as there was no audience (we can realize because there were no claps or screams and they weren't on a special stage) they feel no pressure, and in the other they may feel and may affect. Plus I love the jazz at the begginig. XO

On this date in 1973 {Mar. 3rd} "Hocus Pocus" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #9 & spent 19 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 69th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1973 chart...
Reached #18 on the Canadian Singles chart and #20 in the U.K.
Was featured in the 1994 movie "Stone Age"...
