Whhhat A dickhead. All summed up succinctly I guess. Please pronounce the 'A' as 'eh'. That is quite important. Johnny King? Well - just nothing really.
I stumbled across this video last evening and can't get it out of my head. It's the very first time I heard this song. I also enjoyed reading about your life story and admire your passion for music. Please tell me if you were in NYC when Genesis

People are complicated and can be both ridiculously talented and mentally and morally lacking at the same time.Caravaggio, one of the greatest painters ever, murdered a man. This doesn't excuse Spector-all I'm saying is that his woes in later life do not take away from his accomplishments in recorded sound.Pop music owes a lot to Phil Spector, and his current state is unfortunate.Still doesn't diminish his talent.
Brilliant Jonathan thanks for posting.great memories for me.Agree with all that you say re: Phil Spector for me he is the god of music producers, not going to see the likes of him again.
First time I've heard this song.. and I've just gone over to 7digital and bought a copy.. amazing. I know and love plenty of Spector's other work.. Given that I'm too young to have appreciated any of this when it was released, it serves as a testimony to Spector's prodigious talent that I and many others still enjoy his work today. I wonder how many of today's 'politically correct' starlets will stand up in thirty of forty years time? Thanks Jonathan for introducing me to this.
The lead on this song is Bobby Stevens the leader & lead singer for the Checkmates Ltd from their inception. He also co-wrote this song with Phil Spector. He left the group he founded without performing another song on the album because of contract dispute with the label over publishing & "B' side producing rights Thus, leaving S. Charles to finish the album.
Phil was a tremendous producer. Jonathan thanks for posting. His music will be appreciated for generations to come. I wish you would post more from this album. It was a truly great album that you can't find anywhere.

I know Mr. Spector (not met him - know him). I'm honored that he talks to me. He's incredibly intelligent. I don't believe he did it. I think it's a horrible, tragic situation. I spoke to Mr. Spector during his 2nd trial & told him briefly what I thought happened. He just...chuckled.
Phil Spector - like all great artist - able to convey every ounce of emotion through his artists without the slightest hint of tackiness. Everyone of his songs sing just for you....and only you.

Very early like in the early 70's Ronnie Spector tells many stories in her book about how sensitive he was about it. And would even wear it to bed sometimes.
I agree that what Phil did (from the evidence supporting the case) was a horrible thing but as far as I'm concerned he's a musical genius - or for those to thick to read that:

As usual, a tiny minority of brain dead morons are spewing bile whilst the intelligent majority appreciate the quality of the music. I'm delighted that Phil himself sent me a complimentary message thanking me for this tribute.
There's a wonderful recent interview up here on You Tube with Hal Blaine on Phil Spector in which, besides some wonderful insights into their working relationship and instrumentation I'm sure you'll appreciate, he mentions a not isolated kindness of Phil's to Sonny Bono (I won't spoil it for you); very much in keeping with his message to you.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
In the Bible, it says, let he who hasn't sinned cast the first stone ..
@JonKing2007xx This is a beautiful tribute! I admit I am a bit teary-eyed after watching it. Phil Spector was one of the best things to happen to the music industry...ignore the naysayers. Spector produced bowel-movements that are more worthy than the morons, I am sure.
How nice of Mr. Spector to send you a message. I wish he was in a studio doing what he does best, instead of where he is. God Bless him and keep him safe.
@JonKing2007xx Sir, how was it to meet Sir Phil Spector? Pretty obvious he's a genius since he's so nit-picky huh? You got to send me that link to his channel. And may I wish you the merriet of Christmasses while I'm at it!
@JonKing2007xx Alot of celebrities...O.J., Pete Rose, Phil spector, Bill Clinton, just to name a few, have gotten into trouble and had their talents stripped from them. Remember what they did.....especially the "wall of sound"
@JonKing2007xx And you Jon King what kind of man are you?Your showing no respect for Ms Clarksons family. So your in love with Spector, this is a time when you should keep it to yourself.
I don't consider his criminal trial when I hear his music. Regardless of what he did apart from music production. he was and is a genius. And so was Sonny Charles. Thank you Jon for sharing this wonderful tribute with the YouTube community. This is my all-time favourite song. And I agree with your comment re the violin solo. Awesome!!
I don't consider his criminal trial when I hear his music. Regardless of what he did apart from music production, he was and is a genius. Andd so was Sonny Charles. Thank you Jon for sharing this wonderful tribute with the YouTube community. This is my all-time favourite song.
Isn't it wonderful how there are still homophobic, anti-semitic, racist biggots around to pass comment on a perfectly decent tribute to a wonderful record producer.
We'll never know exactly what happend or the circumstances behind the event. If people choose to believe what the media whip up into a frenzy, then they really need to go back to school and get a better education!
Even if we put aside revenge (or indeed nastiness), there's the need for other women to be protected from a man who has used guns the way most of use after-dinner mints. (The legal system here and there may be flawed, but it's a necessary evil in a world with so much violence against the vulnerable.)
he looks really deathly now. he isn't in good health, and is almost 100% likely to die in prison... No one does really know what happens, it is ture, but the evidence was so damming...
What justice did Lana Clarkson receive, Jonathan? None. Were Spector's actions humane? No. His victim will not enjoy 19 years of life, regardless of quality. Ergo, he himself is responsible for his downfall.
I think this is one of Phil's greatest productions with all stops pulled out.
Mr. King, EVERYONE'S GONE TO THE MOON and the flip SUMMER'S COMING both hold a special place for me also.
Phil's life caught up with him. An article I clipped out decades ago shows hin pointing a gun at a camera man with a crazed look on his face. His bodyguard prevents him from pulling the trigger.
Sonny & The Checkmates' "Love Is All I Have To Give" is classic Phil Spector sound ... energetic and dramatic collaboration of word and sound. I'd like to commend you for putting together a very nice and thoughtful video that really gives proper credit for the music itself. I myself have appreciated for quite some time now the innovative and unique approach that Spector brought to the business. Regardless of the lyric/singer, the production quality made all the songs interesting. Nice post. A+
Well Hedge; in that case you and others who choose to judge art by morality will miss out on a lot of great work. My idol is Dickens - whatever his private life contained. Ditto Shakespeare. And Ronnie James deserves better respect for his art, whatever his life. Incidentally I assume you only condemn if the media and judicial systems tell you to? What you don't know doesn't count? You must have greater faith in those than they warrant.
You could extend the 'morality' issue to doctors and other professionals. One's dentist, for instance, could have an interest in collecting used cotton-wool buds. I have no interest in people's private lives, and regard most morals as petty. Murder and abuse of women are not petty, though. (I used Mr Dio as an example of someone who has enormous talent, yet no unsavoury characteristincs - unless you count the killing of the odd dragon!) The penal system is another matter / can of worms.
I don't know how many more times I can say this or make it more clear; this is a tribute to Phil's enormous talent in music. I feel exactly the same about Joe Meek. For morality judgements go elsewhere. Wonderful productions; classic works of art; once again, thank you for the music Phil.
Point taken, but you and other appreciators of Spector (and his ilk) should expect to get some negative feedback from those of us who can't divorce 'art' from 'personality'. If Dio, for instance, whom I believe to be the greatest singer of all time, committed an atrocity, I'd sell his records. Anyway, I believe Spector has been overvalued for decades. His productions sound cluttered and poorly mixed.
Jonathan - Sorry, but Spector is a good example of why celebrity is not a particularly healthy thing to pursue. Isn't it strange that 'the English Spector', Joe Meek, turned out to be a murderer (arguably in a slightly less cold manner)decades before his US counterpart? I'd like to think you wouldn't have made this tribute in '07 had you had prior knowledge of his guilt.
Once again I repeat; this tribute is for the great producer and his wonderful music. I neither know about nor condone any violence towards anyone, be it physical or legal.
not everyone who worked with Spector share the same enthusiasm as yourself.
Check out the 'He's A Rebel' docu with some damning comments from Leiber & Stoller, Ronnie Spector and the Ramones and some guy at the end whos name i cant remember who utterly crucifies him.
I love Spector's stuff myself even though he is a freak
Any normal person must be sad when anyone dies; and unfortunately no thinking person these days believes in any "justice" systems; I have no knowledge of Phil's guilt or innocence but his genius is proven. Thank you for the music Mr Spector.
Jonathan, sorry to put down your little tribute but, as you know, this Spector guy murdered someone by sticking a gun in their mouth and pulling the trigger. Someone like that doesn't deserve a tribute like this.
spector was good at what he did no doubt but hes still a woman murdering wife beating scum bag and is now in jail as im writting this , just coz your talented does'nt excuse the facet he killed that woman he deserves to go to jail for 15 to life , fuck him
I remember when I first heard this song in 1969, I had to stop and turn the radio up and just listen. There is no doubt who is involved with this sound, in the same vain as Righteous Bros. and the Walker Bros., but so hurting. I have about 2K 45's, even though I never collected, but when I look thru them I find so many associated with the man "Phil", a pure genius with his music. Is there anyone else with the signature sounds like Phil Spector.
1951: 'phil like a cowboy would later on in life rely upon his trusty M-16 which he would casually but seriosly draw from his inner pocket of his velvety blazer threatening the back-turners of his MASTER creations eliminating thier ignorance, honestly re-moulding thier view on his gifts to the planet.'
I did not realize it at the time but most of my all-time favorites were his. He must surely be the Beethoven of modern Popular music. Shame about the recent unpleasantness.
I would have to say jan berry was the greatest producer ever lived,it was him who taught brian wilson from the beachboys how to produce cleaner tracks,
Jan was never given credit for his work as a producer, anyone who has never heard him listen to a jan and dean track from the 1960's and hear the production,
Phil spector is a great prodcer and a writer and a legend and deserves credit for all his work,
This has been a favourite of mine since I bought the single in I think 1968?69? What a fitting tribute to Phil Spector. He gave theworld so much good music.
Innocent until proven guilty went out of the window years ago, thanks to the dear old media, and the Internet hasn't improved that situation; bigots will be bigots no matter how much information they get.
Yes, I agree. It's quite frightening the influence the internet has. In the UK we've also thrived on the fact that we legislate against such prejudices, but unfortunately we can't control the internet. But you have to admit the evidence against Phil Spector is overwhelming.......Great tribute to The Checkmates though ...best song I've ever heard.
He will burn in hell right along with Scott Peterson, Timothy McVeigh, and the Columbine Murderers!!! He'll get his burn I hope before he croaks here on earth get the inferno ready for his devil ass!!!!
He locked his ex-wife in their mansion & refused to let her leave (even hiding her shoes), he showed her a glass coffin he had purchased & threatened to put her in it if she ever left him, he refused to let anyone turn the lights on his house for fear of someone seeing his balding head, and he even locked his teenage son in his bedroom for weeks at a time (not even allowing him out to relieve himself, his son had to relieve himself in a bucket Phill allowed him to have).
I can see admiring his earlier career and his pioneering work w/ his "wall of sound" technique.. but going as far as to say you love him and admire him is sorta sick. Even if you disregard his obvious guilt in the latest mistrial, I'll explain my point...
I suspect Phil, like me, is happy to choose between those who admire his work and those who toe the tabloid line. It is so easy to believe the headlines.
Phil spector is an ole fart who deserves to be behind bars for the murder of Lana Clarkson & any asshole who believes otherwise is as nuts as he is. I wouldn't have dinner with Phil, he is a drunk and foul mouthed bastard who hates women! Your an asshole for liking Phil. Your as sick as he is.
"Let it Be" and "Long and Winding Road" without Phil Spector's orchestral direction. Think and hum those tunes and you will find yourself hearing the symphony magic Phil Spector put to it. He's a musical genius.
dude played with loaded guns in the house too much. guns fucking rule but its a scumbag who mixes bullets in the home with them when your handling them. people who get killed when they say they are cleaning thier shit lie. how you gonna clean a bore with one in the chamber?
wall of sound my ass you want to hear the wall of sound i suggest you get a copy of electric ladyland and listen this spector guy is a piece of shit with all of his bubble gum so called music. give me 2mins with this scum bag
Phil is Guilty as charged! I think he's retarded. He's an old goat who just happens to have lots of money. As for is tremor, he's got parkinson's or a tremor disorder. My thoughts are that he has a tremor from all the drinking he's done over the years. the next thing to go will be his liver while he's in jail.
Phil Spector trashed Paul McCartney`s "The long and winding road" and i`ve seen him put Paul down in interviews later. What a fucking asshole that Phil Spector is. Can`t forgive him for that!!
So you feel lucky to have met a filthy rich, famous woman hating murderer, He deserves the death penalty, but he will probably get off, because rich famous men, rarely are punished for their crimes, they pay big money for high power lawyers, and laugh it off
You can run all these great artist all night, he was the best in his time. That was then and this is now, his gun happy days of control , little man insecurity caught up with him... he will go to prison and it is where he belongs for killing Lana Clarkston ... sad... some one should have reported this obsession a long time ago, clearly violations of law over and over, He's guilty, and thats the end of that. He walked out with the gun in his hand... the man saw the gun in his hand.
Nice video, Jon, and good song. No-one will ever be able to take Phil's achievements away from him. I'm pretty sure the whole thing with Lana Clarkson was one big horrible accident, and certainly tragic. I have written my own tribute song to her. I may do a similar video to yours, for her, sometime.
how do you know who phil did and didnt meet in his lifetime?i found it to be a touching tribute. one day i was a kid in a garage band, the next i was playing with Joan Jett in the Runaways. one dosnt have to be "in crowd" to meet famous people, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.Laurie McAllister
Sonny Charles and the Checkmates Ltd. have indeed had a hit , Black Pearl got to #12 on the Billboard U.S. charts and would have got higher if the stations in the south played the record. Spector knew what he was doing. Check out the checkmates ltd. on Playboy After Dark Vol.1 it's not Sonny Charles but they sing a funky song called , Wear It On your Face, check it out post it. This damn little song is good.
What a true classic - the production behind this is breathtaking. The last few bars with the violins will live with me til I leave this mortal coil!

As usual, a tiny minority of brain dead morons are spewing bile whilst the intelligent majority appreciate the quality of the music. I'm delighted that Phil himself sent me a complimentary message thanking me for this tribute.
JonKing2007xx 2 years ago
Hi Jonathon,
There's a wonderful recent interview up here on You Tube with Hal Blaine on Phil Spector in which, besides some wonderful insights into their working relationship and instrumentation I'm sure you'll appreciate, he mentions a not isolated kindness of Phil's to Sonny Bono (I won't spoil it for you); very much in keeping with his message to you.

Awesome!!

Well done for the tribute JK!

An eye for an eye is a perfectly acceptable morality for many Hedgeweed but not for me. Nastiness never justifies nastiness.
JonKing2007xx 2 years ago 4
Even if we put aside revenge (or indeed nastiness), there's the need for other women to be protected from a man who has used guns the way most of use after-dinner mints. (The legal system here and there may be flawed, but it's a necessary evil in a world with so much violence against the vulnerable.)
Hedgeweed 2 years ago
he looks really deathly now. he isn't in good health, and is almost 100% likely to die in prison... No one does really know what happens, it is ture, but the evidence was so damming...

19 years for a 70 year old? Justice globally is rarely just, never humane or decent.
JonKing2007xx 2 years ago

Nice post. A+
MuizeekPhanahtic 2 years ago
Well Hedge; in that case you and others who choose to judge art by morality will miss out on a lot of great work. My idol is Dickens - whatever his private life contained. Ditto Shakespeare. And Ronnie James deserves better respect for his art, whatever his life. Incidentally I assume you only condemn if the media and judicial systems tell you to? What you don't know doesn't count? You must have greater faith in those than they warrant.
JonKing2007xx 2 years ago
You could extend the 'morality' issue to doctors and other professionals. One's dentist, for instance, could have an interest in collecting used cotton-wool buds. I have no interest in people's private lives, and regard most morals as petty. Murder and abuse of women are not petty, though. (I used Mr Dio as an example of someone who has enormous talent, yet no unsavoury characteristincs - unless you count the killing of the odd dragon!) The penal system is another matter / can of worms.
Hedgeweed 2 years ago
I don't know how many more times I can say this or make it more clear; this is a tribute to Phil's enormous talent in music. I feel exactly the same about Joe Meek. For morality judgements go elsewhere. Wonderful productions; classic works of art; once again, thank you for the music Phil.
JonKing2007xx 2 years ago
Point taken, but you and other appreciators of Spector (and his ilk) should expect to get some negative feedback from those of us who can't divorce 'art' from 'personality'. If Dio, for instance, whom I believe to be the greatest singer of all time, committed an atrocity, I'd sell his records. Anyway, I believe Spector has been overvalued for decades. His productions sound cluttered and poorly mixed.
Hedgeweed 2 years ago
Jonathan - Sorry, but Spector is a good example of why celebrity is not a particularly healthy thing to pursue. Isn't it strange that 'the English Spector', Joe Meek, turned out to be a murderer (arguably in a slightly less cold manner)decades before his US counterpart? I'd like to think you wouldn't have made this tribute in '07 had you had prior knowledge of his guilt.
Hedgeweed 2 years ago
Once again I repeat; this tribute is for the great producer and his wonderful music. I neither know about nor condone any violence towards anyone, be it physical or legal.
JonKing2007xx 2 years ago
he does not deserve accolades. he deserves to be thrown in the cells for the remainder of his days so that he can not murder or abuse anyone else

Yes I can't agree more with you....
I'm living in LA and tones of people know that he had some sick problems when it came to women....
I hope that this man will spend the rest of his life in jail.
I think that the court should make him dedicate an appropriate amount of his fortune to charity for violence towards women.
Vinvindi 2 years ago
not everyone who worked with Spector share the same enthusiasm as yourself.

JonKing2007xx 2 years ago
Jonathan, sorry to put down your little tribute but, as you know, this Spector guy murdered someone by sticking a gun in their mouth and pulling the trigger. Someone like that doesn't deserve a tribute like this.

I second that. Phil; Thank You for the music
