Who says the two are mutually exclusive? Boyd can be a hero and a cannibal. (He ate two people.)
One of the major themes of the movie is Boyd struggling to overcome his own cowardice. He froze and played dead at the start of the film while the rest of his unit fought and died. He resorted to cannibalism twice to save his own life, once while stranded in the deadfall trap and once after being stabbed.
It's only at the end that he proves himself a hero by not doing it a third time.
It seems like a lot of people don't realize that Boyd was already a cannibal at the beginning of the film, even if he didn't know it. While he was piled under the dead soldiers after playing dead he mentions that the blood of his commanding officer was running down his throat, and then suddenly he had the strength and courage to capture the enemy's fort. Even before he ends up in the pit he starts to realize that his cowardice had already doomed him.
@yeahchris yeah that ending was tragic and wonderful at the same time, then that awesome soundtrack cuts in. great film. i particularly liked the dream/hallucination sequance with david arquette.
Such a great film. Best fight scene, right up there with the fight scene from They Live. And don't get me started on the music in this film, holy crap, it is the best.
@spadehatesscrewtube if you had ever seen the movie or cared, you'd know that boyd drank the blood of his fallen comrades before this entire scenario existed. it's in the damn movie. you don't get dipcrap ignorant rights just because you made a post. the actual truthfully honest people who have seen this movie
I love how Boyd wears blue and Ives wears red. Cold and hot, temperance and temptation, Apollo and Dionysus. It says everything about their characters. Brilliant movie.
never understood why the lady kinda gets the final attention when she leaves. like it means something. she wasnt a principal character, and the movie could have ended pointing at someone else...
@omgtkseth remember the conversation that she had with the main character about the Cannibals. How you either continue to cannibalize, or sacrifice yourself. She knew what he chose to do and rather than help him, let him sacrifice himself instead of contribute to more inevitable bloodshed.
Even more amazing...remember while you watch this, that this sequence wasn't worked out by a stunt coordinator, but by Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle themselves!
It was sad that Guy Pearce dies at the end, in a way it was either that or he becomes an out of control cannibal.
I love this movie so much, I had an idea for a sequel that takes place in modern day America where a football team at a high school eat flesh to become the best team.
@Slay318 What would be even better, is if there were a movie in which a regular kid, aspring to be a historian, uncovers secret documents that show Hitler, Mao, Stalin, all the evil tyrants of history were secretly cannibals and through eating the flesh of men, made contact with a supernatural evil, who enabled them all to rise to power. That would be better dont you think?
@spadehatesscrewtube Well most contemporary depictions of these men are false anyways. The establishment has learned that domination via the lash will always end up being overthrown. Hence, they have resorted to far more effective methods of control. Namely, by manipulating what people know. That in turn controls peoples perspectives not only in their material interests, but spiritual interests as well. The religious establishment preys on peoples hopes and fears in their pursuit of dominance.
@spadehatesscrewtube In the end, its all about who gets what. With human greed knowing no bounds, privatization and globalization may indeed be inevitable. Technology however, provides the establishment with a means of realizing their ambitions for global dominance permanently. Which is of course highly tyrannical and negative but simply a result of them feeding their own selfish and natural impulses. Simply the darker side of mankind manifesting itself.
:D This was funny. I haven't watched the full movie yet, gonna watch it tomorrow from one site.. anyways, Doesnt matter that I now have seen the end. It just proved this movie rocks :D and I'm soo gonna watch this. Thumbs up for this vid! :)
loved this movie for 10 years. Jeffrey Jones' performance in it is so awesome. "We have a great sense of camradrie here at Fort Spencer." All the acting was awesome. The deleted scenes are also good, and the hidden backstories.
Awesome fight!!! Love the track.... but...this may sound pretty twisted... but for some reason that maybe just girls would understand, that was a bit sexy...
you kindof have to bear with this movie but if you do it has some very profound messages. The visuals are fantastic! It's probably my favorite movie of all time because of the artistic aspect. The scenery, the fort, costumes, and all that beautiful blood!
yeah... this flicks got everything. fun characters kick ass moments, a killer score, good acting original plot, scary moments, and a brutal message of one's own ethos prevailing over corruption. hell that one scene with Boyd hiding int he pit with Reich's body hell you could almost imagine yourself in that situation! its a badass and powerful movie it sucks that it flopped though. too ahead of its time...
One of my favorite movies! My favorite Western. Carlyle is my favorite actor. Great scene; fighting, suspense, sexual tension, bear trap, temptation, and death.
One of my favourite films. Just love it. The tension in this film is great! This scene is really the most violent stuff in the whole film. Love the hit in the head with the wood. That´s BRUTAL
@Artist3303 It's a metaphor for death .... A good friend of mine said this one.. Everybody wants to go to heaven.. just not right now... having said that, you'd be very suprised what people can do when threatened.
@ozawa660 it's not about vampirism, it's about canibalism for power. But it's not true that you can become stronger in reality life anyway you will get infection is PRION to be addicted. if you have infection and produce baby with wife, baby have less chanche to get addictive and eat or drink blood, called is canable.
indeed, before we discovered about porphyria, long ago they thought they're vampire... so ppl became hunters to hunt on vampires and killed TOO MUCH innocents with porphyria. These ppl with poryphyria drank blood for medical.
Sad story about innocents. For now, vampirism is no longer myth. At the moment they eat other cure instead drinking blood. It's rare disease. Drinking blood is dangerous and yes infections too. End of story.
@Artist3303 not really. when you stop to think, it's just the idea of a human type parasite. and parasites have been around forever. i think matt wagner had a great line when he penned grendel, tojiro is boasting about being the superior being to christine spar, and she rebuffs him saying bah, vampires are leeches, sucking at another beings ability to survive.
This was the movie that got Carlyle noticed. I saw this in the movie theaters back then and had NO idea what I was in for.
To date this movie is one of the creepiest I have ever seen.
I wish someone would upload it, all I can find is one in fucking SPANISH! I don't speak Spanish hahaha. Someone upload! PLEASE!

can·ni·bal (kn-bl)
n.
1. A person who eats the flesh of other humans.
2. An animal that feeds on others of its own kind.
Notice the lack of qualifiers such as
Cannibal:
n.
1. A person who eats the flesh of other humans, unless of course he does so in order to save his own life.
He ate other people. He engaged in cannibalism, and is thus a cannibal. QED.
