I don't think Jim Caldwell was that bad of a host. Some people just don't want to except change in any way and will blame the successor. Jim needed alot of experience in hosting to catch up to Wink Martindale's success. He had is low points but they were just minor. The incident right here is just the technician falling asleep at Jim's command. He will not be as good as Wink just needs alot of experience. I give him 3.5 stars for the job he did.
Far as I see it, it's absolutely unbelievable how much Jim Caldwell gets ribbed on for this little incident. He was fairly new at the job, he had big shoes to fill, and all this beside the point that this wasn't really a huge mistake at all.
The red categories first came around in 1980, and are either ways to get more than one box, drastically increase the pot, or gave both players a chance to claim the box. Do a Wikipedia search for more information.
Wink could have stayed on, but then again, Barry & Enright was in a state of decay a year after Jack's death. Half the staff followed Richard Kline to Kline & Friends and Joker's Wild was in the hands of a Bill Cullen who had seen better days. That being said, Tic Tac was not an assured future, so he might have been right to leave when he did.
This was definitely a poor decision, of course by then, syndicated Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy were beginning to take root. That being said, Jim Caldwell was to Tic Tac Dough what Rolf was to daytime Wheel.
I actually remember Rolf (with the long surname) the NFL dude hosting Wheel on CBS daytime! Heck, it was better having Patrick Wayne host the short-lived TTD in 1990-ish! (Despite the "cosmetic" set changes, which sucked.) Wink was GREAT on the original show!
I loved this Game Show, and both sets, and bringing it back to GSN is not a good idea right now, and we know why! I do agree Wink should've never left, all I can say is, he left this for (Headline Chasers)!
After seeing a handful of these reruns via GSN, I can safely say that Wink Martindale made a big mistake by handling over the reigns to Jim Caldwell, who clearly was not cut out to host this program (and the less said about the 1990 Patrick Wayne version, the better)
EY! Caldwell held it down pretty well. And it wasn't a bad idea upgrading the set; as long as the narration remains conceptual( the music, the board, the dragon, and the announcer). If Patrick would've suggest keeping the original narration, Wink wouldn't be missed so much. I don't think a rappin dragon and a dragon slayer was a good casting call.
I remember the rappin' dragon and the slayer too! I've not seen any of Caldwell's shows; heck I had no idea till a few years ago when I found out online that Wink left the original TTD before it was cancelled! I only saw Wink as host back then, but then again I ddin't always watch it LOL
In 1985, Jim Caldwell took over as the new host of "Tic Tac Dough" with a new look. The Old look was emceed by Wink Martindale when he left the show for "Headline Chasers" also in 1985.

Plus he didn't scream "IS RIIIIIIIIIIGHT!" or "YOU WINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!" like his own successor did.

Since GSN brought TTD back on the schedule,(Wink's) Caldwell's version should be on the weekends just like back in 2000-01.

hell yeah those were good times

But it won't happen at the moment, thanks to that stupid b-s Sony one-season policy GSN has in place.

With that background, Jim kinda reminds me of Max Headroom.

Jim was not that bad of a host

Jim wasn't bad, just had the unfortunate task of following a legend.

Patrick Wayne on the other hand was a terrible host, the set was terrible, and what were they thinking with that theme music as well.
jaydude28 4 years ago
I can still play that music in my head! I actually kinda liked Wayne, but he's no Wink!

Love how that Game Show Network bug obscures some of the text.

They should do a special on "Biggest Mistakes in Game Show History."

The set got an update and new breakaway doors behind the players replaced the opening on the far right side.
