TR Knight felt his character was being given much room to grow, and for that matter, on screen time during the show. For that, he wished to be let go from his contract. Hence, all the heroism with the girl and the bus. Needed someway to bring his story on the show to a close on a high note; instead of just leaving and being done with Seattle Grace, he did one last heroic thing.

Knight is officially leaving the show and not coming back for the 6th season), you still don't know that he died.
