Geddy got the fretless bass from some company as a loaner to try it out. It came to the studio after they had packed up most everything (and Alex had already left). Geddy was messing around with it and trying some riffs. The producer heard him and pressed the "record" button. Then conviced Geddy to create a song. Peart had some of his drum kit still there and played along and they recorded it together. Lifeson recorded his stuff seperately and they added it to the mix.
Almost right - It's a Jaco Pastorius replica from the Fender Custom shop that I'm pretty sure they gifted him. And yes, he did get it recorded acoustically by the producer before he recorded it. Peart sent his expensive kit away already, so he recorded it on a 4 piece kit, making it the only album to have 3 instrumentals and the smallest kit Peart's ever recorded.
get a capture card you fucking loser.

And the little kit was there primarily for the producer to bang away on when not... producing.

@ABCDEFR I hear the Geddy buys all his own gear.. His tech tells me he does this not to owe the company anything in return.. Makes sense
