Lain seems to have Multiple Personality Disorder between her self and her alter ego in The Wired. When Alice was freakin' out, I don't think Lain was actually there, I think Alice was just going "What if Lain really DID tell everyone!?" in her head. However, if Lain actually was there, I think it's safe to assume that Lain was in her alter ego state.
On a metaphoric level, I think Lain's wired self represents sort of the collective unconscious people have when on the internet. Which explains why the god of The Wired tells her that she has always been in The Wired. People online can express themselves in a different way than they can in real life, however, there ultimately seems to be only one type of personality online. The eternal shadow self of the real world, if you will. I think Lain coming to terms with the fact that (to be contiued)
-she is not the only one that acts a certain way on The Wired causes her to react with hostility to people that "wear her head." As for the existence in the real world. Let's take an example where a person falls into so much admiration of some online figure that they come to impersonate them in the real world. The real self falls out of existence as the new self formed online comes to inhabit the real world. I have some more theories on this series and will try answering any questions.
