Brutal??? Vikings were welcomed as a way of seeking retribution against Roman Catholic monasteries habit oppressive tributes. Umm? Where the GOLD was. As far as the women of England,,, 4 foot 9 to 5 foot 2 inches tall, 90 to 100 pounds. One under each arm? Of the Vikings, bathed or swam regularly or sweat “Sauna”, groomed well, sea-chests to contain Brush, Combs, Scented Oils, ROCK HARD ARMS and ABS from rowing all day, 6 foot 7? What’s not to like??? Knute
Wait,, I always was told that Viking was related to the word Wrecking,, or in “Maritime”, to plunder a ship gone aground or wrecked. So to “Go a`Viking”, would be closer to an adventurer looking for spoils, “Gone a Wreaking”. Perhaps this accounts for the confusion of the V and W. The W,, actually being double V not a double U, Or we would be saying “Oopee” instead of “Whoopee”. All the best, “Knute”, TR Knudtson
Harald Hardrada, first battle as 15 years old in a Norwegian civil war, was wounded and came on the loosing side. Had to flee east, become the chief of the Varangian guard for the byzantine empire. Taking many cities and catsles for the empire. Then went home and claimed the throne, ruled Norway and Denmark having many battles against Danes fighting for freedom. Then lead and invation of brittain and died at standford bridge by an arrow in the wind pipe. Viking age died with him.
@Nortrix87 Well,, Canute surely taught us a lesson in having so many wives, let alone many others of his fancy of maid and handmaiden ways. He would have done better to make his sons, Harald Harefoot and Harthacanut, CO-regents of a united Scandinavia, Normandy and England. This is why Canute is associated as the “Abraham” of Scandinavia, after his death, no one could decide who to follow or which son would hold the favor of the people. All the best, “Knute” TR Knudtson
Hello Eryn, great video, but your link should go to : 'Norse mythology and Viking Gods 3' instead, of 'Norse mythology and Viking Gods 2'. Thank you and have a good day!
I'd argue the Assyrians or the Nazis, or the various steppe cultures throughout the history were much more brutal than the vikings, if you're looking at the "most brutal people in history".
Their brutality was exaggerated by the only literate people in Europe (the priests and monks) whose churches and monasteries the Scandinavians were raiding, so naturally they exaggerated the "savage, barbarian" nature of the raiders. They were more opportunists who could fight yes, but that doesn't mean they went out of their way to cause destruction.
Cnut the Great (Old Norse: Knūtr inn rīki;[3] c. 985 or 995 – 12 November 1035), also known as Canute, was a king of Denmark, England, Norway and parts of Sweden. After the death of his heirs within a decade of his own and the Norman conquest of England in 1066, his legacy was largely lost to history.
Cnut was of Danish and Polish descent. His father was Sweyn Forkbeard,
What is the deal with the tattoo changing arms @ 1:32-1:50? I know they make fake tattoo sleaves, but she dosn't seem to be wearing one. It's almost imposible for me to pay attention to what she's saying with this strange anomily
That's because the image is flipped horizontally for that span of the video, then back again. You can also note that her bangs get flipped too for that bit.
Newfoundland is pronounced 'new-fun-land'. Also, at 1:32, your tattoo switched from your left arm to you right arm, and back to you left arm at 1:50 - strange. Vikings were in Newfoundland 100s years before Columbus set foot on North American soil.
I can hardly count them. I liked Leif Ericcsen for discovering the New World. But then I also liked the Varangian guards of the Byzantine Empire. Even now, Scandinavia is the best place on Earth to live. Long live the Nordic peoples (I am an Indian-American).
Vikings didn't have horns on their helmets. At least there has been found no evidence to support this myth. It is said that this was something Wagner added to his opera "Der Ring des Nibelungen" to make the vikings look more terrifying.
Search for: Gjermundbu, to see a real Viking helmet.
ONLY Kings and the like had helmets and chainmail. And not even all of them.
It was extremely rare to own a piece of armor.
They often traded with the french to get damask steel swords.

Fun fact 1#. Óðinn ribbed out one off his eye to feed it the "miðgarðsorms" (middle garden worm) so he could drink from a well, after wards he could write poems.
FF 2#. When Höður accidentally killed Baldur with a mistletoe (only thing that could harm Baldur), given to him by Loki. Æsir told the world to cry for Baldur, for it was the only way to get him back from Níflheimum.
Loki chanced him self into a old women and refused to cry for Baldur. So he had to stay in Níflheimum.
im my favorit viking propbably yours too BTW if your doing facts aboute vikings dont take a helmet on that have nothing to do with vikings lol but most the facts are good :)
The Vikings have been given a bad rap! They were not near all blood & burn like people say. Many Vikings were nonviolent explorers and settlers, only becoming violent in self defense when attacked by the indigineous peoples of that area.
They will build the largest viking museum in the world here in Stockholm, Sweden.
it will include tons of viking artifacts of course but also some kind of boat trip that will take you thrue the different viking expeditions and eras both to the east and west. They havent started on the construction yet but you can read about this project on the net. I think they call it : Stockholm viking center or something like that.
Hi, I'm a guy from Sweden, and I think that it would be fun to see a video about a Swedish viking. :)
Also, although not from the viking era, I'd love to see a video about the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf, the greatest Swedish king and the king that made Sweden an European superpower (which sadly it is not anymore buhuhu) during the thirty years' war.

Brian Boru is my favorite Viking for driving out the other Vikings from Ireland.
The other fact I'd like you to share, Vikings didn't wear horns on their helmets. Well, not for battle. Ceremonial helmets, but not the rape n' pillage variety.
My favorite viking is nameless, it's a battle story where the vikings were losing and being pushed back by the anglo-saxons across a bridge but one Viking let the rest of his "battle brothers(?)" go while he stood his ground. He fought the anglo-saxons single handedly and the only way they were able to defeat him apparently was one of the saxons went under the bridge and slammed a spear through the bridge into this dudes nuts, and finally died. Pretty damn epic story, Vikings FTW!
My favourite Viking would have to be the Legendary Viking of Stamford bridge.

My favorite Eric the skull splitter. He was good fun on a raid. One of the best pillagers and not a bad raper either.

also, the horned helmet is a misconception. Vikings did not have horns on them.
