  • Why american sign language (is he american) Wouldnt makaton and bsl be easier

  • it ok, but can be a bad thing to,as he might take longer to speak

  • this is why i want to have my own baby at 17.

  • OMG HE IS SO SMART AND CUTE !!!! WHAT AN INSPIRATION EVEN THOUGHT HE"S A BABY!!!

  • I'm an ASL student in the U.S.

This was great to watch! So cute!!! He knows BSL better than I do! :)

  • awww he's so sweet!

  • Bless him! He's very cute! And very good xx

  • Lewis is like "I can SEE there's still biscuits, dammit, woman!"

Amazing stuff tho.... v impressive for such a young age.

  • I liked this vid... Its cute! God bless that boy!

  • very cute, and loved it when he started signing biscuit...did you find that Lewis tended to use sign instead of speech sometimes, if so do you think this slowed down his language acquisition (most bilingual speakers have difficulties in one or both languages at the beginning stages)? I think all children should be introduced to sign :) good job Lewis x

  • @lozenger69 - the evidence is that two spoken languages will compete with each other, and cause delays - although usually a higher attainment eventually - while sign language & spoken language learned together reinforce each other for a whole bunch of reasons, so that goals are reached earlier than average in speaking.

Certainly what I found with my four daughters.

  • Puts us (non SL) to shame. Although I learned Makaton, like any language, if you don't use it you lose it. I think we should all learn SL before we learn a different language. What do you think?

  • That is one clever baby!

    I am currently learning BSL.

    Its hard!!!!

  • i reckon its piss easy.but yeah, i agree. This babys a genious...

  • more beisket

  • aaaaw :) i was deaf due to illness when I was very young so my first language was Makaton.

  • @tillp1981 Have you missed out a word or punctuation somewhere? I'm confused by your comment. Please elaborate.

  • yeah you missed a word out but i think i can work out what you mean. The benefit of baby sign language is that your baby can express itself and so cries less.

I would say that if your baby cried less than all the other babies, that would make you a MORE confident mother, not less.

    Peace.

  • hehe how cute all he wants is biscuits . What a cutie

  • Wow! This is so amazing! And cute! I'm 15 and learning it for my Work Experience working with Mentally Disabled children, and most of them have trouble hearing/speaking, so this came in lots handy! :D Thank you! x

  • Thankyou so much for sharing this with us all, it was fantastic to see. I laughed a lot once he started to sign biscuits!

The way it obviously works as a tool for communication was clear during the clip, another child may well have just cried and you would have no clue what they wanted.

It shows what a patient and caring Mum you are, and your little boy is adorable and very bright.

You've inspired me to start signing with my own little boy - thanks again.

  • oh ok and it not f it two fingers by your thumb over 1 another

  • btw you got daddy wrong

    :)

  • Hi, this is the ASL (American Sign) for Daddy. Thumb to the head. he found it easier than doing the BSL sign with the fingers (ie letter F for father).

  • aww so cute this is one thing i would like to do can u give me some advice how to go about it please

  • hello. If you are committed it is really very easy. Baby pics it up naturally. You need to learn some basic signs and them just use them naturally every time you say the word. Before you know it, your baby will begin to use the signs. My boy is now speaking and the words that he can pronounce the best are the ones he learned to sign! I recommend the Baby Einstein "first signs" dvd.

  • Aww, I can see that some of them aren't BSL, it's really cute. Aww.

  • hes so confused and adorable at the end

  • so good, must be a very good parent to be so calm to teach a boy like that, it's just lovely..

  • that's amazing.

  • I have started to learn BSL from the Baby Signing books available and have noticed having watched Smart Hands videos how different ASL is from BSL. Which one would you use?

  • you could try google tinytalk for baby sign language in the UK. They do lots of 'classes' throughout the uk and its amazing how quickly your child can learn. we ran tiny talk in our children's centre and after a few weeks some babies started to sign - cookie was a great favourite.

definitely worth trying - fun for you and the baby

  • interesting to see how many signs are alike or similar to ASL and how many are different. (i am studying to be ASL interpreter but want to learn BSL for fun and so i can communicate with the Deaf community if I ever get the chance to visit the UK.

  • why are you teaching him bsl and maketon? it will just get confusing, personally i would teach him maketon as younger kids can grasp it more easily and there are many videos and dvds on the market for younger children to enjoy witch re-enforces maketon signing.

  • It does sound confusing, but it's just how it has evolved really. I started with BSL but we then picked up many ASL signs which he found easier. He has since begun watching MR.Tumble (Justin on Something Special) and that's where the Makaton signs came in. As per my comment below, he seems to be getting along with it fine and I generally try to stick with BSL now he's a little older.

  • kwl its good its really interesting to see that a 15 month old baby can sign better than me!

  • aww wow

  • That's adorable!

  • sweet
