Is this a genre thing ? The music is totally lacking melody. I believe this guy can play and appears quite intelligent in interview but the music lacks any spark or accesibility. The best bit was the guitar solo. I am not trolling it is a serious question.
@stevegrierson not a genre thing, Helmet-at least for me-is/was a band of raw emotion with anger or disgust being at the core. For me it's the feeling I get from listening to it, not how melodic it is.
@A4moondoggy ...He wanted a nice guitar, so he bought one... Is there really anything wrong with that? Kurt Cobain's guitars were expensive once Nirvana got big too. Hell he even had a custom guitar built for him by fender. If you can play nice guitars, why would you play shitty ones?
Hey, at first: thanks for uploading all the great videos ov this really cool helmet show! Then I have a favor to ask you if you can please upload "unsung" in a better quality!?
last time I saw them was 2008, Berlin, Germany. Hamilton still is a god. they played loads of old stuff and heated to venue up to a max. though i don not really like their reunion albums it is quite okay. i am 30 now and the 90ies are over. but helmet will never be topped - never!
great performance of a great song by a fucking great band. i miss this era so very much. i saw helmet about 4 or 5 times from 94 to 96 and they were always so tight and heavy and amazing. thanks for the trip down memory lane, now i'm sad that so may new bands suck
I miss them too. I'm happy with some of the bands from those days getting back out there (Meat Puppets, Jesus Lizard, and Butthole Surfers) that haven't tried to reinvent themselves. I haven't seen the 2000 + Helmet so I can't judge. I would imagine they are better than a lot of bands touring currently.
Just saw the Butthole Surfers in Seattle Oct. 13.They opened the show with BBQ Pope. Paul crossing his eyes while he was singing. I grew up in Denver and saw Helmet the first time in 92 at the Gothic.Saw them at the Ogden and the Bluebird, too. Theyre so loud and brutal live. Luv em!
@Denco83 denco, they KILLED at warped in fitchburg mass. had to be 2005 or so. started out with maybe 30-40 ppl( i think red jumpsuit was playing the other end at the same time)had to be 25-30000 at the end! emptied all the other stages when they hit milquetoast for the 2nd song
I never saw them perform this song live.....thanks so much for posting this! I saw them this same year, '94 in Portland Oregon with the Melvins. Helmet was my favorite band for years, this brings back so many great memories!!
How did you get such good audio of this gig? You're way too close to the stage to have been able to use the camera's mic right there, did you have a digital recorder somewhere in the back of the venue or something?
Wow, you had access to the soundboard for this? No wonder it sounds incredible. I'm surprised you mixed that much of the on-camera mic into the sound though, with you having been as close as you were in these videos I'd have assumed none of the concert (asides from in-between stage banter) would be usable.
The on-camera mic was either a Beyer or 635 hand mic which can take on high decibels w/out distortion. If you
watch the Your Head and FBLA II videos from '92 I did not
have the board for that and it sounds decent. The mix never has crowd noise (and usually heavy on drums and vocals) so it's a good back-up if the amps are turned up loud onstage. Helmet on this tour had their own sound crew and monitors. Very fortunate to have gotten this good of a result. And the original is analog.
Helmet, Rollins Band, and Sausage, on the road in the summer of 1994. What a fucking unbelivable line up that was. Saw that show August 4, 1994 at La Luna in Portland Oregon. The best show of best shows in my opinion. All 3 bands at their peak. Anybody else see that tour??? Let's revel in it for a minute...
As good as that tour was, I think the UK tour was even better in the summer of 94. Kerbdog and Understand opened for Helmet. Kerbdog is easily the best band that folks in the U.S. have never heard of.Saw that lineup up 5 nights in a row, hung with J. Stanier(coolest mother f'er ever!) and got a guitar lesson from Paige on more than one occasion. Not only does their music completely kick ass, as people they all kicked ass as well!
'91 was actually '92 - I think...the club was tiny and packed. I stood next to Page for a fews songs and then he graciously informed me that it just wasn't going to work out. I had never seen a singer switch-out mics in the middle of a set before - he explained that after a few songs it gets saturated and sounds poor. Rollins used to just suck the spit out and gob on the floor. I moved to the other side of the stage and it sounded like, well, a huge bass cabinet. I can post it anyway.
Sorry ZanArrKey - I deleted you by accident. Alas - it was actually cold as fuck OUTSIDE - but with Page between the camera and a 1K back-light (really guys?) his breath vapor makes it appear as though the stage door was open. I would put up the whole show in one clip - except that I am not a super YouTuber (and could give a shit about that) and the posts are limited to around 11:00. I may put it up on my MySpace page though - which has no video limit for time - just file size.

Lectrosonics. VHF model 185. Plugged into soundboard - mixed with 20% on-camera mic.
