In a 1971 Playboy interview he was asked if he felt any empathy for Native Americans and he responded: "I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them, if that's what you're asking. Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves."
Wow. Really, John Wayne? You believe that being faithful to your heritage is mutually exclusive from being a proud and patriotic American? Really?!
I guess the silver lining is that conservative-Americans (SWIDT?!) haven't really gotten THAT MUCH stupider in the past 40 years; they've just gotten louder and teabaggier.
Individualist-conservatives do not want "everybody to be the same." However they do have a problem with a person being identified, not by his own unique personal qualities, but by his involuntary membership in such groups as race or ethnicity.
Furthermore, neither actors, nor members of any other profession, are disqualified from political discourse due to their means of employment.
Finally, when Wayne expressed his political views, he did so publicly not anonymously.
Wait I thought by conservative definitions Fascism is wanting everybody to be the same. You Jonah Goldberg. The irony of these words. BTW John Wayne was a FUCKING ACTOR!!!
We need more John Wayne and less Obama in it this country. Before you pathetic race card pullers start in with your usual bullshit, I'm talking about versions of being a man here and not skin color.
when i was a child, my father owned the record of that(yes I'm THAT old-vinyl LP records), and that was his favorite track-and its so true-in this day and age, when race is supposed to be meaningless as far as your value as a human is concerned, we ARE all americans---remember 9-11-2001? how a city normally at war with itself (NYC) came together--gangs working with rival gangs? And how the far left and the far right stood together on the steps of the Capitol and held hands and sang?
I respect your views of John Wayne but he has a point if you were born in American your an Amercian. Your culture maybe Brazillian but in fact if you were born here you are an American. Read the constituion.
I love it! The same Mexicans who yearn to be free, who pray to get over the border, when asked if they are American, turn and shout NO! I AM MEXICAN-AMERICAN!
I saw this guy wearing a T-shirt that said Unhyphenated American on the front. I think that Hyphenated Americans scare the right only when there are three words in front of the hyphen: African, Mexican and Asian. They don't mind the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF). They would never bother members of the Irish-American Republican organization about hyphens because the terms Italian and Irish are just not as troublesome as African, Mexican and Asian.
The "right" doesn't like hyphens because they seperate. Multiculturulism is a bad thing. We are ALL Americans. it doesn't matter where you came from, it matters that you are here. Our nation was made great b/c people from all over brought what was good of their original culture and added to American culture, making it better. It is kind of like how a mutt is healthier than a pure bread dog. Common language and values are what held this country together, let us not forget that.
I have an original print of a sketch of him. One of my great aunts gave it to me for xmas, and no matter how cheesy the thing is I can't part with it b/c ol Marion Morrison was a bomb ass American.
I miss old John. may he rest in peace.

Thank you to the original poster of this video. The poem may be a bit corny but by God the sentiment is beautiful.
Name an actor today of The Duke's stature(not his height!) that would willingly record anything of this nature?
Heartfelt,patriotic,empowering,unifying!
Does anyone know the origin of the poem? Was it an original piece written for the album or was it pre-existing? Author's name?

@SteveAndIdiAmin Do you hear yourself speak or do you fade in and out?
You can be faithful to your heritage without a hyphen. To think a hyphen is needed to respect your heritage is just plain stupid.

No, really? Gee. Guess that would explain why I've seen him in so many movies.
I didn't know that made you an actor.
Didn't stop him from raising his voice on subjects and matters he believed in or disagreed with did it?
More than I can say for the internet panzies of the world today who don't even put a face to their voice.

John Wayne is an ignorant ass clown who made a ton of crappy movies where he shot Indians. Good Riddance to him and his hate mongering.
