3:18 - 3:50 complete stick control and precision. All single stroke rolls and all perfectly metered! Buddy is STILL one of the best drummers in the world! Enough said.
There have been many great drummers each gifted and powerful, I saw Buddy play (in person) drums numerous times and without a doubt his solo's were inexplicably breath taking!!!
If you really really know drums and how to play drums, then you will understand this. But if you are better at playing the radio you probally don't. I talked to Buddy a lot and did have too much swag, and a whole lot of attitude
Travis Baker????He should go to the Buddy grave and to clean his grave.......Buddy Rich was and remain the DRUMMER OF GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Another 100 years for a drummer like him.....God rest his soul in peace.
Buddy does more with one hand than most drummers do with both feet and both hands. Glad I got to see him live and get his autograph. We miss ya Buddy. There will never be another Buddy Rich.
I get that you need many years of practice before you can pull this off, but I would never expect a man of his age to be able to do it. Bravo I must say.
There's way better Metal drummers than this old fart. Just cause he's a pioneer doesn't mean he has technical ability. Look up Mike Portnoy or something. Btw, Travis Barker is shit
Whatever floats your boat I guess . Was/am not a particular fan of Rich's style but his technique and precision was stunning IMO. Personally I always like Krupa as a big band drummer, technique not so good but just thought he could swing.
What people have to understand is that all the best drummers of today are very often big fans of Buddy Rich and those to dis Buddy are just showing their ignorance.
travis would have to pump 2kg of crack into him to do shit like buddy, let alone think about it! buddy smokes a newport, sips a martini and busts out a 5 min solo with too many strokes in it to count and the clencher is he does it all while wearing a tux!
In the best travis barker solo vid i could find, the only thing he played was triplet singles, and double stroke rolls..... now please inform me as to how the hell travis barker is in any way close to being as good as Buddy Rich.
That's how it's done boys and girls. No gimicks, no flash or fifty drums. Pure technique, phrasing, style. perfect timing and class. A real gift to the music world, and an inspiration to professional drummers and the rest of us wanabes.
@nobuddyrich Haha, It's actually pretty funny, because my only fault with this is what you made a point of Highlighting. Basically, like you say, this is completely and objectively, Pure Technique. This is what it is to play with outright talent and passion. The only gripe I had with this is the style, it's very classical, I like there to be a certain sound, uniqueness. But I respect your opinion, and I know We're on the same page. This Guy AMAZING! Have a nice day!
Some nuts on the walls, I will Admit myself Buddy Rich is an Inpsurational Drummer for the simple fact he's fast, But I am also a Child of the simple age of 16. And I am going to make no mistake that Yes this Drummer is brilliant, but you adults don't need to throw your fucking weight about your age, Sure you've seen him, you've been able to aw-inspire him, But you ever heard the same "I've got a Black cat? You've always got to have one blacker?" It comes in quite well here.
How in the world does Travis Barker get mentioned so much in these comments on a video of Buddy Rich?!? Hey youngbucks-Travis Barker is a one-maybe two-dimensional drummer who has no business being compared to 'true' iconic drumming legends such as B Rich!!
2:30 - 2:33 metal blast :-) with traditional grip haha, I always wondered if jazz gurus would be able to play fast blast metal, as this is somewhat different style and requires different skills. This video convinces me - YES ! He would be able to play metal if he only wanted to :-)
...the drums usually sits behind the band...Multi millions of people paid to see Buddy Rich drum while the musicians sat behind him. I'm old enough to have been one of those lucky ones back in '72
@Chileandude18 I watched the vid and I'll not "zip it". Metal is an outlet for angry people trying to prove something to the world; wannabe tough guys, as witnessed by your reaction to my post. Metal is a brash form of music, apart from something pleasing to the ear. The form is kept alive by musically ignorant people, such as you. You wouldn't recognize real music if it bit you in the ass. If you ever grow up, you may look back and laugh at your ignorance. Nah - probably not.
@WhoYaTryingToKid I don't speak english as my native language, but if you insult somebody for liking some different music you like you are kinda sad. good luck
@bisys2 I insulted his misspelling of a word, which showed an inferior level of intelligence; a level of intelligence I find typical of musically ignorant metal lovers, or those without a clue as to what real music is. Have you ever heard the term, "music to my ears"? Metal is NOT music to anyone's ears. It's basically NOISE. Turn off the distorted buzz guitar noise and listen to the melody, words, pitch, chord structure and lyrics, and you'll find very little in the way of musical value.
@WhoYaTryingToKid I find the way you judge metal music and people who listen to it pretty damn ignorant. Who are you to judge someone that you don't even know? If someone likes metal, fine. If he's a fan of what you call "noise", fine. If he's a fan of a genre of music which is WAY better than pop, fine. Just leave your opinion to yourself; we'll all be happier as a result.
@Disembow1280 We'll "all" be happier? I think not. Metal heads might be happier in their musically crippled world. And my opinions are allowed to be stated just as yours are, thank you. The main difference is, I know what I'm talking about and you are without a clue. I've wasted enough time on you already. Someday when you grow up, you might remember this conversation and realize how ignorant metal music WAS.
@WhoYaTryingToKid Wow, all I said was to respect other peoples' opinions, and you burst out with all this hate speech. Again, you don't even know me (or my musical tastes) and you're making judgments.
@WhoYaTryingToKid Okay, you need to stop. I'm proud of that video and how I express my appreciation of that game by arranging it, even if it is a couple years old. Notice that I haven't said anything demeaning to you; I can assert my opinion without insulting people. I suggest you so the same.
@Disembow1280 What was "insulting" or "demeaning" about what I said? By your image, you appear to be a child and have some 'growing up' to do. By your association with something like "Bubble Man" you leave little doubt as to your adulthood. So, I reiterate, when you grow up maybe your musical opinion will be worth some consideration. Until that time, this conversation is over.
@WhoYaTryingToKid No, it's over when I SAY it's over. You're making all these assumptions about me only by what you see rather than by what you know. I find that VERY insulting. If you want me to spoonfeed it to you, I guess I can. My image depicts Marco and Tarma, two characters from Metal Slug, one of my favorite games. Bubbleman refers to Megaman 2, which is a game from my childhood. I have played drums and percussion since fourth grade, so I know a few things about music.
@WhoYaTryingToKid I don't even know why I'm typing this, but I've marched high school drumline for five years, played symphonic for eight, and played drumset for three years in a jazz combo, along with other various performances. I listen to mostly classic rock, prog rock, ska, reggae, and grunge. My favorite band is RUSH, and I draw most of my influences from Steve Gadd, Freddie Gruber, TR Jr. and...Buddy Rich. Is that enough background for you?
@bisys2 "sad"? No. I'm happy as a bitch as long as I don't have to listen to metal (and rap) noise. In time, you may figure out what real music is. Until then, we're finished conversing.
Don't get me wrong, as a lover of all kinds of music, I like Slipknot as much as the next guy, but comparing him to Buddy Rich is just morally wrong. Buddy wins hands down. Literally did you see those single strokes? Amazing!
Why compare the two? They are both great drummers in their own right. Of course there is Buddy and then the rest of us mere mortals that's a given. But to even get any where near Mt. Olympus or to be compared to Buddy is a huge thing in it self. Buddy swings and Travis rocks! Keep on stroking.....peace!
yer aye one handed rolls he shits on the best and the best dont included formere emo muppets such as barker im mean real drummers: dom famulero, danny carey, tim herb alexander, and more
This is the man....1956, I was 17,Central Park, "Jazz under the stars" concert, NYC promoted this, It was drummer night, Buddy up against Louis Belson....That was an incredible experience...Rich was on and the double bases of Belson made the night something special for this 17 year old big band sound fledgling drummer...I sucked then and still do, The talent gene went to some distant cousin but I still beat the crap out of those rusty old drums...want them burned with me when I go.....
I was mesmerised by this guy's drum playing when I was just a kid and I still am. He must be the world's greatest ever drummer. Absolutely stunning - awesome!
this was here in dominican republic, my parents were there, I have been seeing pictures of this since I was 8, great to finally see it on video! thanks for posting!!
Barker is a fantastic drummer in my view. Hes not in this league of drummers, but to be fair, he has a different style which i think is what makes him awesome. IN MY VIEW, Dave Grohl will always be my favourite drummer. but it basically comes down to opinions.
I agree with @holmer666 ..It was the same deal with Lars in the 90's. I remember so many people taking drum lessons saying that lars was the best drummer on the planet. I guess we all grow up at some point :-D
I'm never gonna understand if u guys are trolling with the best drummer bullshit or not.. He has no beats, not much technique whatsoever.. just splashing different components quite fast.
I once watched this man perform at the Michigan Theater (Jackson Michigan) playing only his hi-hat, which he took away from his kit, and placed on center stage under a spotlight, for well over 20 minutes. Thanks for posting. Brought back some good memories.
speed and leading a big band? Buddy Rich was a wizard. My favorite combo player would have to be Max Roach, he just played with such taste. That kinda taste that could get you chillin on the beach
Buddy Rich didn't apparently 'master' anything - it came automatically to him. Those who know him well claim he NEVER practiced. This stuff just came to him literally almost as a baby.
i first heard of buddy rich in a Muppetts video, I could never reach the skill of his caliber but I love the waythe he plays BOTH sides of the cymbol, now i look around at the technique instead of just the sound. That cat is cool. thanks for posting.
His snare work is impeccable. His symbols are flawless. If someone hasn't mastered the fundamentals, how can we take that person seriously? TB is just okay, but Buddy Rich is master-class. Peart, Gadd, Vinnie....all those guys look up to this dude.
If you can't hear his mastery in this video, then I can't help you. You have no taste or an ear for true talent.
Buddy is and forever will be a legend if not the very best there was, but this is drumming and just that. In terms of musicianship Neil Pert, Keith Moon, Carl Palmer and even Thomas Lang have him beat. Buddy is epic for sure but the thing that makes him so epic, is that he was the first to ever be that epic.
@gdub19777 Neil Peart copied a lot of Buddy's techniques...even so much as stole a couple of tremendous licks which can be heard on All The World's A Stage. If Neil sees Buddy as a god, then I see him as that too.
Gawd knows how much I love Neil's playing, but let's face it, Buddy is just better. Neil thinks so too....just ask him.
Lol I like how everyone commenting is talking about Neil Peart too. Thank You! Neil is SICK! And this is a badass vid! But who is better between Peart and Buddy??? Ö
Man I have played drums for 20 years I have a set of pearl session custom 12 peace with, TAMA STAR-CLASSIC SNARE I have played all steals of music I have the best dw 9000 pedals my drums sound killer? BUT WHEN I SEE AND HERE BUDDY AND PEART PLAY I JUST CAN'T HOULD A CANDAL TO THEM THEY BLOW MY MIND I DON'T THANK THERE HUMAN? THAT JUST IS NOT RIGHT. I NEED LESSONS ON HOW TO PLAY DRUMS I NEVER TOOK THEM. I STARTED ON A BIG FLOOR TY WITH MY HANDS IN MY MOMS CONCREAT BASE MENT WELL THANK YOU FOR P
I keep seeing Travis Barker's name so I went and looked him up. To compare that guy to Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Neil Peart, Terry Bozzio (or any other of the great ones that T.B. is constantly being bragged up against) is fucking retarded. The dude is okay, but c'mon, really?
@holmer666 @holmer666 He doesn't suck. As metallica got famous, he got lazy; his drumming in kill em all isn't half bad. At any rate, he suits metallica, like ringo and the beatles.
@asdfcrow I'm referring to most of the live footage I've seen of Metallica - it seems he can't even keep a beat, which is what I thought drummers were usually supposed to do. I like their old music (up to And Justice For All, anyway, and Load and Re-load were okay), but what was with the sound on St. Anger? I'm not sure what any of them were thinking on that one...
3:18 - 3:50 complete stick control and precision. All single stroke rolls and all perfectly metered! Buddy is STILL one of the best drummers in the world! Enough said.

Let me clear the air on this Travis & Lars trash.
1. Buddy was playing professionally @ the age of 4
2. Buddy didn't receive a single drum lesson
3. Buddy DID NOT EVEN OWN a drumkit, and therefore NEVER practiced outside of performing
4. Buddy was considered a drumming legend 30 times over before he turned 30
5. Buddy had a Black Belt 40 years before Elvis
Lastly,
A lot of people compare Buddy Rich to god. Don't get me wrong, he's great and everything
...but he's no Buddy Rich

Barker is a fantastic drummer in my view. Hes not in this league of drummers, but to be fair, he has a different style which i think is what makes him awesome. IN MY VIEW, Dave Grohl will always be my favourite drummer. but it basically comes down to opinions.

It's so amazing how clean his triplets are around the drums too. I need to limit myself to a couple drums to learn to play cleaner like this.
randylikesdrums 1 week ago

John Lennon would be pleased to know that Rich loved Norwegian Wood; in fact his various bands played it all the time.
caesarcerf 1 week ago
plus, he knocked out Frank Sintara, though they were and remained, friends. How cool is that?
caesarcerf 1 week ago
Buddy Rich didn't apparently 'master' anything - it came automatically to him. Those who know him well claim he NEVER practiced. This stuff just came to him literally almost as a baby.
caesarcerf 1 week ago
I hate having to read (write too) about Travis Barker. If I wanted to do that I wouldn't be here. So sad.

i first heard of buddy rich in a Muppetts video, I could never reach the skill of his caliber but I love the waythe he plays BOTH sides of the cymbol, now i look around at the technique instead of just the sound. That cat is cool. thanks for posting.
seabee890 1 week ago
His snare work is impeccable. His symbols are flawless. If someone hasn't mastered the fundamentals, how can we take that person seriously? TB is just okay, but Buddy Rich is master-class. Peart, Gadd, Vinnie....all those guys look up to this dude.
If you can't hear his mastery in this video, then I can't help you. You have no taste or an ear for true talent.

Watch the left hand of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa and the drummers of that era. No comparison. They were the best
sassy1548 1 week ago
His oversimplified single-stroke roll at 3:15 puts TB in his grave. Please don't make me see TB on this anymore, or anywhere.
manyourisms 1 week ago
Buddy is and forever will be a legend if not the very best there was, but this is drumming and just that. In terms of musicianship Neil Pert, Keith Moon, Carl Palmer and even Thomas Lang have him beat. Buddy is epic for sure but the thing that makes him so epic, is that he was the first to ever be that epic.
gdub19777 1 week ago
@gdub19777 Neil Peart copied a lot of Buddy's techniques...even so much as stole a couple of tremendous licks which can be heard on All The World's A Stage. If Neil sees Buddy as a god, then I see him as that too.
Gawd knows how much I love Neil's playing, but let's face it, Buddy is just better. Neil thinks so too....just ask him.

@holmer666 That's really wrong...He's not okay,he's the world's worst drummer ever!
loumaTROM 1 week ago
@loumaTROM Ha ha. I think the worst ever "trophy" would have to go to Lars Ulrich. That guy REALLY sucks.
holmer666 1 week ago
@holmer666 @holmer666 He doesn't suck. As metallica got famous, he got lazy; his drumming in kill em all isn't half bad. At any rate, he suits metallica, like ringo and the beatles.
asdfcrow 1 week ago
@asdfcrow I'm referring to most of the live footage I've seen of Metallica - it seems he can't even keep a beat, which is what I thought drummers were usually supposed to do. I like their old music (up to And Justice For All, anyway, and Load and Re-load were okay), but what was with the sound on St. Anger? I'm not sure what any of them were thinking on that one...
holmer666 1 week ago
@holmer666 yeah, they've done a ton more bad stuff than good. Although I wouldn't rate him at the worst.
