@88yougurt88 I have this same problem with my 2010 YZ 250, I honestly think it is a bad design and the check bolt is just obviously way too low. I always went by the check bolt on all my other bikes, but not with my YZ. I just put in 800 mL of Yamalube. I put a bit more than 750 because I usually warm up my bike good before draining the oil to get more out. Anyone else know why the YZ's check bolt holes start pouring way too early??
@OBS3RVE - as tight as possible?? There is a good chance you will strip bolts out if you do this. With experience, you get a good feel for how tight a bolt should be. To be certain, use a torque wrench.
@OBS3RVE - It should hold the 650cc (650ml) fine if you are draining it and measuring it right. technically the 650ml is the volume when it is totally dry, which is almost impossible to do - there is always some old oil left in there. So 650 will slightly overfill it, but not enough to matter. Drain the oil when the engine is still warm so the oil comes out better.
@OBS3RVE the point of a torque wrench is to prevent overtorqing/undertorqing bolts. as tight as possible is the worst thing you can do in most situations
I'm going riding in a couple days and dont have time to have the preferred oil shipped. I'd like to change it before I go so I can start fresh but I'm hearing that you can use several oils. Some say 30 to 40 weight engine oil some say 80 to 90 weight gear oil some say tranny atf. What would you recomend to get me by till my order comes in?
@ferebeescott211 - It depends on the bike you have. Refer to your manual to know exactly what should be used. I wouldn't use an 80 to 90 automotive hypoid gear oil if that is what you are referring to. If nothing else is available, use a 10w40 motor oil. However, I would suggest motorcycle approved oil when possible.
If you have a motorbike that self mixes the fuel and have left it sitting for a while - there's no need to change it, just don't fill it up with different oil unless it's all out.
@RockyMountainATVMC Okay so not anything serious =) I broke my conrod's lower bearing, oh god if you lived near, I would bring my 125cc dt-x straight to you :P
@tooumas could cause exessive pressure in your gear box when the oil or any air heats up and expands. Might blow a seal or gasket in worse case senario, not sure if it will effect your gear selection that might only be with thicker oil
then again im not sure if 50-150ml is over filling, better off just doing the homework and finding out the right net amount
i just bought a 1990's ktm 250 2 stroke. whats the best way to flush the engine out to make sure there is not any dirt of grime in the bottom end? the bike needs a new gasket and im afraid cooland was able to leak into the bottom end because it sounds a little grindy when i push the kick start.
I have a 97 kx125, and the clutch grabs like crazy, it will kill the bike when I put it into first and the clutch is fully depressed, I heard that you can use atf type f in the tranny. is this true and what should I do about the clutch, I hate stalling the dang thing
@RockyMountainATVMC thanks, I adjusted the clutch cable and its a lot better but still not perfect, thanks for the info, and will atf type f work in the bike?
@rama6maiden the oil you put in the base of your bike isnt the same as premix oil u mix with the gas u have to by 10w30 motor oil if ur manual says that
ive had a look on my bike and i cant seem to see a oil cap. its a tm125 2004. i looked for about 15mins on the bike and i dont see anythin. someone please help
awesome vid thanks alot. but one question, on the bottom of the bike where the oil drain plug is, is there any other screws or bolts that i might get mixed up with?
Question hopefully I can get an answer too. We drained the fluid out of a yz125. It seemed like alot more then 650 cm3 or 21.9 oz came out. Whats up with that ? was it maybe over filled? Does the fluid expand after use? after watching about the fluid check bolt I will use that as a guide. I have yet to fill it.
I have a question. What is the difference between engine oil and transmission oil? How do you change the transmission oil? Are you changing the engine oil or transmission oil in this video?
@kasey24ful - I guess it depends who you talk to. two strokes don't take motor oil like 4-strokes. This is the transmission oil on this bike. However, motorcycle motor oils are made to work in the transmissions of motorcycles and atvs. Of course, you should always refer to your manual.
What do you think about warming up the bike for a few minutes first and zip-tying the clutch in the dis-engaged postion? Those I got from ehow, but I also wonder if it might be a good idea to ride the bike around and cycle through the gears to get any sediment stirred up before draining.
@RockyMountainATVMC Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and zip tied the clutch anyway. I figured it couldn't hurt. I also saw the previous comments about the clutch sticking until the bike was ridden and didn't have any problems like that at all so maybe it helped. I'm thinkng it kept the plates apart so the fluid would be able to get back in between them... Stands to reason I guess... Thanks again. Peace.
Hey for premix I bought some bel ray hr1 cost me 20 bucks for the liter is this really worth it. Also bought a can of air cleaner spray for 10 bucks. Is there a cheaper alternative.
If I have aluminum Drive plates in my clutch, (the oil is grey) what parts will I need to fix that? And what is the cause, and is it bad for the motor?
@MotorCrossification - if you have aluminum plates the oil will turn dark real quick because of the wear on the aluminum. It isn't a bad thing necessarily, but aluminum plates do wear out quicker. You can get new steel plates in an EBC or Tusk clutch kit.
I just changed the oil in my 2005 YZ125, and now when I start it, I pull in the clutch to put it in gear, but when I click down to first the bike launches forward and stalls. almost as though I hadn't got the clutch in. Any ideas what I've done? :(
@MetalHeadDirtbike Insert the key to the ignition, turn the ignition on without starting the bike, the put it in neutral, roll the bike down a hill then gear down and release the clutch. It will start in first gear then drive around for a while and shift to get the oil going into the system.
what would you recommend as a good premix oil for my cr 125,all parts are new,any help appreciated thanks..wanted to know if you know what the brand of premix that most of the spercross racers used back in 2002 and now?
@happywombatproducts Actually this is often the sign a of a bad water pump/impeller. This allows antifreeze into your tranny fluid causing this grey mix. I had that on my rm 85 and i repaced the impeller it worked great
@WishiHadaRealQuad actually my bike is in pieces right now, im in the process of cosmetic loving for my bike, took my radiator hoses off yesterday, drained and inspected and my pump is totally fine, the engine is completely mint while the idiot who had my bike before me never washed it, and had a terrible spill, he was then scared of the bike and sold it to me hahaha. but the results of the crash: busted back fender off, ripped silencer clean off the pipe, ripped off side panel, rad. shroud
@WishiHadaRealQuad ripped seat, dented and scraped pipe, busted the spring on my foot peg, and spring on my back brake lever, bent bars, ripped the grip nearly in half, broke oil window on clutch cover, sheered part of my throttle off, and busted the brake lever clean off and a few nuts and bolts which have been replaced, but i guess this is what happens when a 450 POUND MAN jumps a dirtbike, he also blew my shock, which is having new o rings and a recharge ATM should have a b4 and after vid soon
@RockyMountainATVMC i let it sit all night with the drain unplugged and no it wasnt warm but 650ccs and i only fit 150 in big difference could it be because it was not warm
hey their seems to be a hole right behind the engine on my old yz100 looks like i could fit a sleeve or something do you know what it is? and what does ccs stand for mine says 750 ccs
@rockymountainatvmc hey buddy i was wondering my buddy doesnt run any bottem end oil in his kx125 and he says 2 stroked dont needd bottem end oil, and also my kx250 leaks oil outa the shaft where the front sprocket goes in is that a big deal to fix anyways thanks budy hope u get back to me
@RockyMountainATVMC hey are you changing the transmission oil in this video? and also if you are, how often should i change it? and what kind of oil do you suggest? also another question, if im trail riding my yz 125 wich gas ratio should i use? 40:1 or 32:1 ? also 1 more question, sorry, is there regular oil i should change? or does it go in the bike with the fuel when its mixed? thanks and anwser back soon, love the videos man!!
@FratusDillon - Yes it is transmission oil. I always ran 40:1 with Yamalube 2R in my 125's with no problems. There is no motor oil since it is a 2-stroke. The crank and piston is lubricated with the pre-mix in the gas.
@Jakemxr - some oils don't mix well (castor based mostly). I have switched brands many times without any problem. I always had great luck with yamalube 2R myself. I still run it in my YZ250.
@RockyMountainATVMC Ok i will try and continue using Motul brand oils for transmission and Fuel mixture. Or can you recommend any better quality oils that i can use with my motul fuel mixture, i run it at 40:1 gt900 synthese i believe off the top of my head
hi i need help my rm 125 it does not start. i had a 30:1 gas mix before and ran out and there was little left over in my tank. So i went out and put 32:1 gas in and try to start the bike. it doesnt start. then i checked the engine oil and there was very little engine oil left. So can anyone help me?? does antone know what to do please???
@ibanezer95 - check your plug. If you are running too rich and fouling your plugs, you may want to lean up the jetting. there is no need to mix more oil in the gas than a 32:1 on the ratio (I raced 125s for years on 40:1 yamalube 2R with no problems).
Hey,.. got a prob. I have a 79 or 80 model MX yamaha 100 dirtbike motor. I'm having a problem with finding out where the 2 stroke oil line goes. I'm more than familar with 4 strokes, but 2 strokes is something new to me. This was my first bike and the frame was cut for a project. I now want to mount it on a simular bike. But I've got all that covered, just need to know where that darn 2-stroke oil line goes. Could you help me out? I'd really appriciate it!! ! Nice vid by the way!
@MountainMan5516 - the line from the tank goes to the injector, the line from the injector usually runs to the intake manifold (front of carb or carb mount on cylinder). I hope that helps.
don't get this, At the end he said start the bike up and check the level window but yet when i start bike the window is empty but when i turn off the bike it fills back up again. am i meant to be fillin up till when i start the bike the oil stays at the bike while but bike is running?? please help im stuck and i don't want to over fill it
@Moroccan4lifeone - most bikes have a filter in the tank on the petcock. I don't think I have ever had one get dirty, unless it was an old bike with a metal tank. Pull your petcock if you are curious.
@bogie89 - all 3 would work. use the 75 during colder months and the 85 in the hot summer. Run the 80 if you aren't sure. You won't go wrong with either one.
if i got a 2 stroke every time i put gas in do i have to put more oil in every time i put gas in because if it a 2 stroke oil and gas mix or is it the same as a 2 stroke????
@SuperShzam - I don't know if I fully understand the question. We are changing the transmission oil in this video. follow the manual's specs on mixing the oil.
@RockyMountainATVMC what i meant to say is when you mix oil and gas its using the gas oil mix to lubricate the engine but when its oil injected does it mean it mixes with the gas or does it work separate like a four stroke
@SuperShzam - "injectors" inject the oil into the air/fuel mixture at the front of the carburator. So it is doing the same thing as having the gas mixed, just easier for the user.
I have a YZ125 as well and I'm not quite sure what type of oil to use. I have 2 Cycle motorcycle oil that I got that I mix with my gas. Can you use that or is that not the right type of oil?
@YZ125Broski - for your transmission you need to use a motorcycle approved motor oil or motorcycle transmission oil. you don't use premix in the transmission.
Hi! I have yamaha yz 125 and on the service manual, the recommended oil is yamalube 4 SAE 10W-30, but i can't find it! All sellers have SAE 10W-40 but not 10W-30. 10W-40 it's ok or i must find 10W-30?
Thank you very much and excuse me for my english!
@loop1612 - 10w 40 is fine. Even the 20-50 is fine in hotter conditions. yamaha has actually changed the name from "yamalube 4" to "Yamalube all purpose" motor oil. Any motorcycle specific motor oil is fine. You can also run a motorcycle transmission oil in your YZ if you want. Belray, maxima, Golden Spectro, Pro Honda, Silcolene, etc. all make great gear oils for motorcycle transmissions.
@corson8 - You can use a quality motorcycle motor oil in the transmission of your 2-stroke if you want. Or you can use a motorcycle specific gear oil like Bel-Ray Gear Saver.
@NickLTR - you spent a lot on a bike, go ahead and invest in a manual. Well worth the money. Oil check just lets you know when you have hit the right level when filling. It is not an overflow hole. It would take a long time to drain oil from that little hole.
@bogie89 I use a coolant called Engine Ice in my YZ125, it runs great. I'm pretty sure you can find it at autozone. If not, any motorcycle dealer/shop should carry it.
I heard you should warm the bike up before you change the oil. Not warm enough that its too hot to work with, just enough to get the oil flowing. Is this true?
i had an 87 yz125 at one point and when i first got it i drained the tranny oil out and it was a milky gray color and it took a few quarts of oil just pouring new oil in it and letting it drain out before the oil started coming out a normal color it even took some brake cleaner in there to clean it out.
@Bobmilermiller - It is a good idea too. Chances are if you are changing a clutch, the oil needs to be changed. However, if you lay the bike on the side you don't have to drain the oil.
My YZ-125 2004 says 6500cm3 on the gearbox. That seems like way too much. I'm really confused

so is 2cycle oil different from transmission oil ??? =O
TyeDye07 11 months ago
@rockymountainatvmc hey buddy i was wondering my buddy doesnt run any bottem end oil in his kx125 and he says 2 stroked dont needd bottem end oil, and also my kx250 leaks oil outa the shaft where the front sprocket goes in is that a big deal to fix anyways thanks budy hope u get back to me
ch0l0sk8r 11 months ago
@ch0l0sk8r - yes both bikes have transmision oil. The countershaft seal behind your sprocket is easy to change.
RockyMountainATVMC 11 months ago
do 2 strokes only have transmission oil in them please respond asap
ben1996ful 1 year ago
@ben1996ful - They have oil that mixes with the gas too. As far as needing to drain and replace periodically, yes.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC hey are you changing the transmission oil in this video? and also if you are, how often should i change it? and what kind of oil do you suggest? also another question, if im trail riding my yz 125 wich gas ratio should i use? 40:1 or 32:1 ? also 1 more question, sorry, is there regular oil i should change? or does it go in the bike with the fuel when its mixed? thanks and anwser back soon, love the videos man!!
FratusDillon 1 year ago
@FratusDillon - Yes it is transmission oil. I always ran 40:1 with Yamalube 2R in my 125's with no problems. There is no motor oil since it is a 2-stroke. The crank and piston is lubricated with the pre-mix in the gas.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC okay man, thanks a lot dude :)

Hey i have a kx85 and theres alot of oily dirt thats on the motor with some spots, how could i get it off?
Peterrides 1 year ago
do you have to use a pound torque tool
bubbyriggins 1 year ago
@bubbyriggins - Not neccesarily. Just as long as the number matches what your manual says.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@bubbyriggins No i never have used one. They only say that just so the bolt don't become to hard to take off on the next oil change.

im going to be purchasing a Yamaha Yz250, how often should i change the oil?

i have a kx80, how often should i check my power valve?
QWIxW3llyx 1 year ago
@QWIxW3llyx - I always cleaned mine when I did a new piston or ring. Unless you think there is a problem, i don't know why you would check it.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@QWIxW3llyx if my power valve was stuck what would be the symptoms?
QWIxW3llyx 1 year ago
@QWIxW3llyx - it depends if it is tuck open or closed. They usually get stuck in the closed possition which makes them run like crap on top.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC is it ok to use atf oil in the tranny and also use normal 2 stroke used in chainsaws in my dirtbike
QWIxW3llyx 1 year ago
@QWIxW3llyx - No, don't use ATF. Your bike requires specific tranny oil and premix. Refer to your manual.

Hey im running motul mixtures in my fuel at 40:1 is it important to use the same brand oils on the bike? or can just use standard Yamalube?
Jakemxr 1 year ago
@Jakemxr - some oils don't mix well (castor based mostly). I have switched brands many times without any problem. I always had great luck with yamalube 2R myself. I still run it in my YZ250.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC Ok i will try and continue using Motul brand oils for transmission and Fuel mixture. Or can you recommend any better quality oils that i can use with my motul fuel mixture, i run it at 40:1 gt900 synthese i believe off the top of my head
Thanks, Jake
Jakemxr 1 year ago
@Jakemxr - there are lots of good oils out there. That one is fine I am sure.

hi i need help my rm 125 it does not start. i had a 30:1 gas mix before and ran out and there was little left over in my tank. So i went out and put 32:1 gas in and try to start the bike. it doesnt start. then i checked the engine oil and there was very little engine oil left. So can anyone help me?? does antone know what to do please???
ibanezer95 1 year ago
@ibanezer95
You probably fouled your spark plug by running your bike to rich. Get a new plug, or clean the old one up.
neverneen 1 year ago
@ibanezer95 - check your plug. If you are running too rich and fouling your plugs, you may want to lean up the jetting. there is no need to mix more oil in the gas than a 32:1 on the ratio (I raced 125s for years on 40:1 yamalube 2R with no problems).
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@ibanezer95 i run a 42:1 my one friend uses 50:1 and he never fouls plugs

i checked my oil the other day and it was like a creamy grey color is that bad
troy118 1 year ago
@troy118 - "creamy" usually means water, but a milky color. The gray could be from aluminum drive plates in your clutch, which wear out quickly.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@troy118 check your coolant

how often do u have to replace the oil in a 4 stoke?
justinchaffin1013 1 year ago
@justinchaffin1013 - It depends on the machine and how hard it is ridden. Refer to your owner's manual to be safe.

HELLOTOMOROW1 1 year ago
Hey,..
MountainMan5516 1 year ago
@MountainMan5516 - the line from the tank goes to the injector, the line from the injector usually runs to the intake manifold (front of carb or carb mount on cylinder). I hope that helps.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
don't get this, At the end he said start the bike up and check the level window but yet when i start bike the window is empty but when i turn off the bike it fills back up again. am i meant to be fillin up till when i start the bike the oil stays at the bike while but bike is running?? please help im stuck and i don't want to over fill it
rusheveo 1 year ago
@rusheveo - i don't think we said anything about starting the bike. Don't start the bike. just pull the oil level plug.

If we don't have a socket wrench that you can change to a certain weight, how would you suggest tightening it?
SizzlinNinja 1 year ago
@SizzlinNinja - if you don't have a tourque wrench, then there is no accurate way of getting it tourqed perfectly.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@SizzlinNinja Grip the wrench high (closer to the socket), so you don't have as much torque and you won't strip it.

2 stroke got gas filters? how often they need to be changes?
Moroccan4lifeone 1 year ago
@Moroccan4lifeone - most bikes have a filter in the tank on the petcock. I don't think I have ever had one get dirty, unless it was an old bike with a metal tank. Pull your petcock if you are curious.

Hey it me again im ordering Bel-Ray Gear Saver Transmission Oil from your site, I have a 96 rm125 with weight oil should it get 75w, 80w, or 85w?
bogie89 1 year ago
@bogie89 - all 3 would work. use the 75 during colder months and the 85 in the hot summer. Run the 80 if you aren't sure. You won't go wrong with either one.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC so is this 80w-90 correct?
Browndemolitia 1 year ago
@Browndemolitia - correct for what? What kind of oil? Did you refer to your manual?I hope you aren't refering to automotive gear oil.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC I dont have a manual, and i bought some castrol SAE 80w-90 gear oil it said atv motorcycle on the bottle. it milked up real quick
Browndemolitia 1 year ago
@Browndemolitia - Usually when oil gets "milked up", it means you are somehow getting water mixed in it. usually caused by a leaky waterpump seal.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
if i got a 2 stroke every time i put gas in do i have to put more oil in every time i put gas in because if it a 2 stroke oil and gas mix or is it the same as a 2 stroke????
SuperShzam 1 year ago
@SuperShzam - I don't know if I fully understand the question. We are changing the transmission oil in this video. follow the manual's specs on mixing the oil.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC what i meant to say is when you mix oil and gas its using the gas oil mix to lubricate the engine but when its oil injected does it mean it mixes with the gas or does it work separate like a four stroke
SuperShzam 1 year ago
@SuperShzam - "injectors" inject the oil into the air/fuel mixture at the front of the carburator. So it is doing the same thing as having the gas mixed, just easier for the user.

I have a YZ125 as well and I'm not quite sure what type of oil to use. I have 2 Cycle motorcycle oil that I got that I mix with my gas. Can you use that or is that not the right type of oil?
YZ125Broski 1 year ago
@YZ125Broski - for your transmission you need to use a motorcycle approved motor oil or motorcycle transmission oil. you don't use premix in the transmission.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
Hi! I have yamaha yz 125 and on the service manual, the recommended oil is yamalube 4 SAE 10W-30, but i can't find it! All sellers have SAE 10W-40 but not 10W-30. 10W-40 it's ok or i must find 10W-30?
Thank you very much and excuse me for my english!
loop1612 1 year ago
@loop1612 - 10w 40 is fine. Even the 20-50 is fine in hotter conditions. yamaha has actually changed the name from "yamalube 4" to "Yamalube all purpose" motor oil. Any motorcycle specific motor oil is fine. You can also run a motorcycle transmission oil in your YZ if you want. Belray, maxima, Golden Spectro, Pro Honda, Silcolene, etc. all make great gear oils for motorcycle transmissions.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
do you use the same oil for a 4 stroke and 2 stroke?
corson8 1 year ago
@corson8 - You can use a quality motorcycle motor oil in the transmission of your 2-stroke if you want. Or you can use a motorcycle specific gear oil like Bel-Ray Gear Saver.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
how often do you need to do this with two strokes?
MrGoulash96 1 year ago
@MrGoulash96 - refer to your manual. All bikes are different.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC its not every 10 hrs of use is it?
MrGoulash96 1 year ago
dont you have to start the bike up after th oil change and then check the oil level again
dizzebite 1 year ago
@dizzebite - check your manual, but i am sure it wouldn't hurt.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
I never got a owners manual for my bike, so i don't know how much oil to add.
What does the oil level check bolt do? Is it like an over flow in case you add to much oil it drain the extra out?
And anyone know the recommended oil amount for a 2006 Honda Cr250?
NickLTR 1 year ago
@NickLTR - you spent a lot on a bike, go ahead and invest in a manual. Well worth the money. Oil check just lets you know when you have hit the right level when filling. It is not an overflow hole. It would take a long time to drain oil from that little hole.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@RockyMountainATVMC
Thanks a lot, seriously good advise! Would it be safe to let the oil fill up until it runs out of the hole?
Definity picking up a manual with my oil the next time i go to a dealer.
NickLTR 1 year ago
@NickLTR - Sure that would be safe. It would ensure a perfect oil level.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
Thanks for the quick responce! What about the coolant what brands should i look for. Can I find these products at an autozone.
bogie89 1 year ago
@bogie89 - Refer to your manual. A standard coolant from an auto store should work fine. make sure it is mixed right.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
@bogie89 I use a coolant called Engine Ice in my YZ125, it runs great. I'm pretty sure you can find it at autozone. If not, any motorcycle dealer/shop should carry it.
YZ125Broski 1 year ago
@YZ125Broski - we carry engine ice coolant/antifreeze.
RockyMountainATVMC 1 year ago
Can I use the same 2 stroke oil I use to mix with the gas or is this a different type of oil?

I heard you should warm the bike up before you change the oil. Not warm enough that its too hot to work with, just enough to get the oil flowing. Is this true?

i had an 87 yz125 at one point and when i first got it i drained the tranny oil out and it was a milky gray color and it took a few quarts of oil just pouring new oil in it and letting it drain out before the oil started coming out a normal color it even took some brake cleaner in there to clean it out.
MaraJade13243 1 year ago
do i have to drain this to change my clutch?
Bobmilermiller 1 year ago
@Bobmilermiller - It is a good idea too. Chances are if you are changing a clutch, the oil needs to be changed. However, if you lay the bike on the side you don't have to drain the oil.
