I wished that I could learn Russian as it is a very interesting language. But sadly in the United States of American, educators tries to limit the foreign language to Spanish and sometimes require students to take spanish courses than any other foreign language. If I could come to Russia or the Ukraine, I would teach them Sign langauge and hopefully I could learn to speak Russian and learn about their coulture. Plus teach them how to play the organ and piano.
WOW! how nice if im not mistaken i heard Maria Sharapova. Its really warming to hear a BIG name doing BIG help. Im from Belarus and hear about this accident all the time. Its sad and at same time i feel we alll have to worry and cant forget! Im hoping to take my trip there this yr and see my family in Brest and all over Belarus:)
I was a grammar school student in Prague at the time of the accident.. about 20 of us, on a volunteer basis, were booked for travel to Moscow by train via Ukraine/ Kiev for 10 days.. teenagers who wanted to form our own independent view what Russia was really about.. then it was end April, we had annual days off.. me and my parents staying in our cottage in the mountains.. we went cross country skiing, some 2-3 days after Chernobyl.. baking in the sun at 1300+ metre ASL ;)
the Soviets did NOT tell the world what happened.. I guess I had my dose of radioactivity.. the first alarm arrived a few days later from Scandinavia.. they measured high radioactivity.. the whole north-western/ central/ eastern Europe got exposed to it, while the Soviet officials decided they would NOT warn the international community..
to be continued... it does not fit all in one hit ;)
early June our school trip to Moscow followed. luckily last-minute they could change our train routing via Belarus/ Minsk ;) I wonder how my thyroid will be doing one day; thank you Soviet communists.. also thanks for taking great (NOT!!) care of your own citizens when/ after this happened.. never ever lets hope.. lesson learned??
Never again. I've got a Ukrainian friend who witnessed "a flash" when he was little. An Azerbaijani friend told me that his dad was sent there by the Soviet authorities to help clean up the site. His dad still has some symptoms of radiation poisoning.
And yes - today is the 23rd annivesary of the Chernboyl accident.
Still it will never be forgotten.
I thought about Chernobyl when it was 1:23am in Ukraine. Well i'm from England and England is 2 Hours behind Ukraine. So do the Maths. I would of had to think about Chernobyl at 25th April 11:23pm coz that is exacly when the accident happened in English time.
