I want a remake too! The lame follow up SWON sucked so bad, I can't believe they even spent the money on it. I used the cd for a drink coaster until my bloodhound ate it.
Did I miss something when I played this game or was there no way to fast forward? I always had to fly all the way back to blighty. Took like 2 hours. and a ton of map reading.
I have this game, I used to play it on my 486-DX 4 back in the day. I thought it was a decent game and that its too bad you cant run it today on todays computers.
The flight sim to end all flight sims! Possibly the greatest game I have ever played. I compare all flight sims to this one. I loved the x-wing and tie fighter games(i still play them), but this is the one that started it all. I had the 3.5 floppy version(I still have the manual). I found a torrent since i cant load from my floppys and put on dosbox, but it doesn't work right there. I wish they would remake this with no changes except updated graphics!
A REMAKE OF THIS GAME,Yes with the original Sounds PLZ in Svga modification or so, this is Timeless like 1942 Pacific Air War for Dos and 80 Years of Aerial Warfare ,want anyone play with me over INTERNET?????? plz Kontakt
Such a great game, got me into flight sims and Hollands better follow ups, the X-Wing series. I still have my 5.25" floppys for this as well as the decoder. Classic.
The campaign modes were near perfect... Picking industries to attack, or swapping factory production between jets, rockets, munitions etc. With actions on the mission influencing the war, and vice versa. I haven't seen this done since in a flight sim, massive remake potential!
All you had to do to defeat enemy AI was pull into the vertical, wait for them to disengage, then roll back in and pounce. I flew one campaign until I had a score greater than Eric Hartmann :)
been waiting for Lucas to update this game with better graphics,, i still have the manuel to this game sitting right here on my desk. I used to play this game for hours till the sun would come up and i was so car sick ide be falling out of my chair. i still remember some missions i was on,
WOW I remember playing this game when I was just a little kid I remember everything about it still lol. The mustang's and the 229's are still my favorites to fly on any simulator game.
yeah you had to turn on auto pilot and switch turrets. I got the game working on a DOS emulator. Sort of anyway, runs pretty crappy. More about nostalgia. Makes me wonder how I ever made progress in that game it was so hard to see stuff.
Ahhh, I loved this game to death. The opening music is fantastic. It's both fun and evil at the same time! This was one of the first games that had a German-based campaign, too.
I used to love to play as a Nazi fighterpilot, and then when I'd shoot down a B-17, I'd wait for all the crew to bail out, and then I'd come back around and collapse all of their parachutes with machinegun fire!
hey kawakasper, have you ever heard of IL-2 Sturmovik?
if you havnt go check it out, its my favourite flight sim out there and you can buy it off direct2drvir for 10 bucks - you can fly over 200 aircraft in IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, you c an build your own missions from scratch, or you can play a dynamic campaign for any country.
you can play campaigns in the pacific, or campaigns on the western front.
I played this game for hours as a kid. turns out that if you take a b-17 and fly under something like 25 feet the flack guns cant get u. I used to fly around and strafe with it. I bought secret weapons over normandy for the x box but was really disappointed. I WANT A REMAKE!!!
@grooveclubhouse i too played this game for hours and hours on end when I was a kid. Loved it. Still have the box, discs, and the big ass book on all the planes that it came with.
I never tried Secret Weapons over Normandy though from the videos I've seen of it I don't think I would've liked it as much.
Battleground Europe is the closest game to a modern upgrade of WWll games like these. I've played it for 8years online and they just keep making it bigger and better.
Still can work with VDM Sound, which is a nice trip down memory lane. Only problem: I can't get takeoffs to work. It accelerates, but it stays firmly planted on the ground. Can't remember how to get it airborne.
Best campaign mode ever. no game has done what this game did. I spent a summer with a single unlimited ammo unlimited damage P51 systematically destroying every piece of infrastructure the German's had. A single pilot won that war.
My favorite flight sim of all times. Today's games have the beautiful graphics. This one had a very great campaign to it as well. I loved having the Germans research the secret weapons and loved how you could bring them to their knees by bombing all the oil supplies.....
i played this i dunno how many hours. i remember the guy at babbage's trying to talk me out of buying this because i was like 8. i'm glad i didn't listen to him.
holy crap...such nastolgic memories of this game. memories of this game are like memories of those epic watergun fights on those hot summer days or making snowmen when school was snowedout.
I used to play this game sooo much! I've been looking for a download for a long time...but Lucasarts still has a firm grip on the copyright. What are they going to do, sell it for $30? Release it already!
Yes, I was going to mention that but forgot. It was craptacularly disappointing and half-hearted. You couldn't even do a friggin' barrel roll (StarFox fans were disappointed especially)!
Say! I have played this game on my ancient 386SX back in the days when MS-DOS was the king! This was one of the BEST games! Thanks for bringing this video for us to enjoy our old memories!
SWOTL & BOB, classic's. Still dig out the old Amiga and have a cheeky go on them sometimes. Havn't seen a version that will run on my new PC. Anybody any suggestions for the 2008 equivs?
Don't know if you know these already, but IL2-Sturmovik 1946 is pretty much the king of WWII flight sims at the moment, highly recommended. Also, the game Secret Weapons Over Normandy was published by Lucasarts as a sort of spiritual succesor to SWofLW, but it plays as more of an arcade game.
Also, I love the in-flight strategic map interface. Lots of other games dont have it like this, where you can take 3-4 minutes to analyze your path of attack, before you swoop down on enemy.
I am 30 and first played this game when I was 14 or 15. It, along with other historical video games, got me interested in reading ww2 history books and books in general. It turned me into a history freak, persuadd me to go to college, and now I am a lawyer. All thanks to some ww2 video games. LOL
Despite the slightly doggy graphics in this fine old game the depth was astounding. There was a squeal of sorts, secret weapons over Normandy, but it was an "action" game and included such gems as telling you there was a bunch of 109's on a runway and I should strafe them only to tell me they had taken off a second later, the whole game was just plain shoddy and it did not include the go229, disappointments all round with that one.
Personally, I think all it really had in common with SWOTL was 1) the setting, and 2) the people who made it. So, by the same logic, I'm not my own person, but a sequel to my older brother because we have the same parents.
I used to get so mad that: A)I couldnt get the timing right on the B-17 Norden sight B)When I tried moving the sight, it would suddenly jump to the wrong spot and throw off my aim! Overall I loved the game though.
Ahhh, I remember the aces series, Aces over europe, and Aces over the pacific, instant classics, and still provide cheap entertainment. I still break out the old windows 95 comp and atari 4 a qucik fix :P
aaah, this brings back memories. this was one of the first games I played as a young boy alongside DOOM and Aces of the Pacific, and I remember just how happy I was to be able to man any gunner position in the B-17 and the surprise I felt when I shot up someone's chute for the first time. thanks for the video!
Good memories- and I've still yet to find a sim where destroying the oil reserves or production plants would have an actual impact on the enemies you faced later.
Very nice memories came to me when i saw this i still have orginal diskettes and the all expansion plane diskettes and the manuals thanks for this video i might install the game again to my old computer oh and i must search the password cicle too i hope it isint missing
It's amazing to think that, while I was playing this sim oh so many years ago, I was so CONTENT with the quality of the graphics. Well, yes I wanted better graphics, but I had a hard time imagining if the graphics you see in sims like IL2, PF, or 1946 would actually be achieved.
I want a remake too! The lame follow up SWON sucked so bad, I can't believe they even spent the money on it. I used the cd for a drink coaster until my bloodhound ate it.

Overall I loved the game though.

aaah, this brings back memories. this was one of the first games I played as a young boy alongside DOOM and Aces of the Pacific, and I remember just how happy I was to be able to man any gunner position in the B-17 and the surprise I felt when I shot up someone's chute for the first time. thanks for the video!

Good memories- and I've still yet to find a sim where destroying the oil reserves or production plants would have an actual impact on the enemies you faced later.

Wow, I forgot how much progress has been made in sims in the last 17 years. Wonder what they will look like in another 17 years?

It's amazing to think that, while I was playing this sim oh so many years ago, I was so CONTENT with the quality of the graphics. Well, yes I wanted better graphics, but I had a hard time imagining if the graphics you see in sims like IL2, PF, or 1946 would actually be achieved.

I always loved the theme of this game. I wish there was a place to download that, or that someone would make an updated version of it or something...
