  • Wow...I remember my mother used to play this song when I was little. The beat popped into my head a few wks back, never knew the name or the words, but I remembered that I liked the song. Can't believe I finally found it on here =] I am 23yrs old, and I am proud to say that I have not "missed the bus/boat" of good music =] Glad my mother expressed her music to me from a little kid to a teenager, cause I still love it as an adult =]

  • 2:17 AM, LIGHT RAIN--------149 MILES TO GO!

  • When music was really music and a mood would be created by just playing a song. I remember having this song sang to me . . .oh, the memories.

  • This is one of my favorite I remember this back in the days and I still love this song I'm now 56yrs it was the time when you hear music it wasn't long before you learned the words, I can listen to this all day and still smile when I hear it like the first time

  • This is one of my very favourite slow song. What great harmony! Technology, or the poor use of it has spoiled singers. Machines are being used to try to replace the human voice chords - Impossible. Listen to Brenda Lee Eager and the Ice Man ---- and try to explain ...

  • YALL AINT READY!

  • Thanks bigbanks, this song reminds me of my mom and dad who are both deceased now. I learned about good music from the best, R.I.P ''Lil benn & Margo i'm sure you both are singing in heaven.

  • God the frickin horns that explode in the middle of the verse bring tears to my eyes as Jerry croons over them.

  • Beautiful Song! Your feel your soul is uplifted listening to songs of 60s-70s.

  • I LOVE THIS! Smoothe, clean ...

  • beautiful keyboard

  • PLEASE!! BRING BACK REAL MUSIC! its pathetic what they put on wax now and try to call it music, musicians dont exist anymore.. their either retired or left this world already..

  • I thank GOD for this posting and for allowing me to experience this type of music back in the day. It was such a beautiful time in my life. We had so little material things but so much love!!! Thank you for this posting... Another beautiful duet!!!

  • Now this is what I call music. My God I miss lyrics like this, it represented real love!

  • This fo'my boy ICE MELO J.

  • Brenda Lee Eager is a choir director in Culver City Caifornia. She had quite an illustrious career as a backup singer, songwriter and musical theatre performer since working with Butler. She also performs a one-woman show based on her life called Grace.

  • if more would understand that understanding is not only mellow but a RELIEF

  • So mellow

  • Listening to this music makes me so glad my generation can pass something like this along to the younger generation. Just some of the great stuff to be used as a template for the future.

  • Don't know about Brenda, but Jerry Butler is a City Comissioner in Chicago

  • I love this song!!! I didn't know who was singing with Jerry Butler, but I love it!!!! Cleve Eaton is her in Birmingham, AL.Where are they now?

  • I thank God above for this song, and for the two songbirds understanding mellow.

  • I became familiar with Jerry Bulter in Mobile, Alabama at the Amvet on Davis Avenue in Mobile, Alabama

  • this is from the old days check out that groovey bass line

  • To my frist, and only love Jeanie boy nelson Mobile, alabama I still love you after a 100 years .I remember the the Amvet on Davis Avenue in the70'S.

  • i remember social dances at my dunbar jr high and horace mann senior high..when i was a young boy/man in pebble town ar.. ..then at philander smith...this brings back memories of my youth....now i really really understand the lyrics

    thanks for posting..

  • The late Donny Hathaway was the pianist on this classic. The bassist was Cleveland Eaton, who would later switch to trumpet/trombone & join the Phenix Horns (played on many Earth Wind & Fire albums).

  • I just bought a great album by Cleveland Eaton, and Brenda Lee Eager became a "friend" on Facebook this very week!

  • The late Donny Hathaway was the pianist on this classic.

  • @MusicManKevin Thanx for that info. I never knew who was the pianist on this great cut. Props to the late Great Donnie Hathaway. This is a true Soul Classic.

  • I've posted things about this song in the past. It just makes me feel GOOD!!!!!

  • man this brings back so many memories.. I was little when I heard this... I wish they made music like this today.. music today sucks so bad.. I have to quickly turn off my radio unless they play throwback music.. thanks for the upload!!!!!

  • I WANT TO HEAR WINDYCITY SOUL, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND IT?

  • Than God for this song.

  • This song speaks to the heart. When they're both singing I can feel their pain but the love bond they still share. Man I wish they still made music like this but now all the love songs are lust songs with no feeling like this one. The good old love songs can bring tears to my eyes, the new stuff just makes me wanna change the station.

  • That's an Electric Bass

  • its been said over and over again where the hell is this music these days!!!!the stuff you can trully feel all over your body .and can bring teas to your eyes i really miss this music and the people that knew how to bring it.

  • As my mother say. That my song! And I think GOD

  • thank you all that is good is from GOD

  • oh yesss

  • As an X electric bass player, My guess that the bassist is playing a fretless electric bass guitar. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I think I'm right though.

  • Brenda Lee Eager is the unsung talent on this song.

  • This song made me appreciate what a Bass line can do for a song.

  • Jerry Butler and brenda lee are soul legends. What a soulful tune, it hits the core in the right spot. ; )

  • For the "1" who does'nt like this song. "I thank God" for the "155" people who do like this song. Now that's "ain't understanding mellow". I love this beautiful classic.

  • I know it's been said hundreds of times, but again, ... When music was really music ...! If you were living and breathing back then, you know what I mean! -- Homefire5

  • @HOMEFIRE5 I know exactly what you mean. Thank God we can understand that.

  • @HOMEFIRE5 Music has always been music. If Mozart we're alive in the 60s and 70s, he would have criticized Jerry butler just like you criticize new music.

  • Really cool tune.

  • I grew up listening to this GREAT MUSIC on my mom's old 8 track stereo system that took up one whole wall in our living room, lol.

  • SO many memories!

  • Classic

  • What a pairing. The melody the setting and most improtantly Jerry and Brenda at their best!!!

  • This is so real......I'm feelin it so much.

  • Thank you for posting this song...haven't heard it in ages and I needed to hear it today.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!!!

  • me again...my mom just talked to Brenda no less than an hour ago - my reason for posting this... she leads a choir in Los Angeles and is hoping to put on a one women show taking us back to our "roots". If you hear about it, support it .

  • Brenda Lee Eager sang in the choir an the Greater Nazaree Missionary Baptist church in Mobile Alabama and was my mom's best friend growing up. As a 3 or 4 year old, I remember sitting on her lap at church holding me while my mom got 'the holy ghost". Whenever i hear this song, it warms me inside because the "gospel" is still there.

  • @iustfse where was Greater Nazaree Missionary Church located? I lived in Mobile inthe 70's. Was this church located across Broad Street in Mobile?

  • @333367777 - Yes, the church is located across Broad street.

  • I love this song. It has everything in it. Words, melody, tempo, and harmony. Wow.

So happy to see it posted here, Thank you.

  • A beautiful duet....Thanks for this posting.

  • I love this song, it has such meaning, anyone who has ever love knows that "understanding is mellow"

  • Get Out! I have been wondering who was going to finally post this! Thank you baby! This is a classic and is going into my collection!

  • Old School Forever!!!!

  • Even as a kid 50 years ago this song was beautiful and damn if it an't still beautiful "wow"

  • I was in the Army when I first heard this song played and I was thinking some of us were going to Vietnam and Europe serving with NATO. For the first time I understood what my lady was saying when I boarded the plane to leave. The sad note she passed away while I was deployed and these words came back to me ain't understanding mellow

  • My mother took me to a JB concert when I was 5 years old, she was 23, I will never forget it. I am 46 now. This has always been an all time favorite.

  • I remember listening to this song on the radio in Tallahasee in the Education Dept. at FAMU, when I was working there as a student assistant. It put me in a mood towards the end of the day to make it on down to the Savoy.

  • Thank God for the Iceman!!!! Jerry Butler can sing me anything!!! This is one of those songs that even if it was just an instrumental, that bass line is on fire!!!! It's music like this that makes me appreciate "Old School" Soul R&B. all this garbage that's out nowadays. These young "kids" have no idea about love, music, or pretty much anything........LOVE YOU JERRY B!!

  • Another great song I always play when I log in.

  • a thumbs down is a wish to go to hell

  • yeah this is a memory bringer.....Jerryt is so unappreciated and its a damn shame

  • Always loved me some Jerry Butler

  • no words can describe this song, fantastic

  • I woke up with this song in my head. Didn't know the artist or the title...I just remembered that hook "understanding mellow". See youtube...has it's use because if youtube did not exist I would be calling the radio stations on who did this song...and really the dj's are way to young to remember this classic.track.

  • @Superfoot they are too young to remember, but i remember perfectly albeit i was a small child with a young mother who loved the iceman.

  • I wish the Ice Man would come back!

  • My father used to play this song when I was a young boy. I loved it then, and I love it even more now. I didn't understand it as a child, but now that I do it has taken on a different meaning. It's truly one of the best songs of all time.

  • One of the greatest duets ever. A true masterpeice.

  • This is one of the greatest duets ever recorded.

  • I thank my mother for playing songs like this when I was kid in the 70s. Love, LOVE Jerry Butler. Brenda's voice is just mindblowing. So much passion and soul. The lyrics speaks volumes to what relationships were back in the day. Just love the message: we might fall out of love as lovers but we gain much more as friends. Now that's understanding mellow!

  • That bassist is Terry Bachman, the bass is a Fender Precision with LaBella Flatwounds @ the Chess/Mercury Chicago studios

  • I was about 7 or 8 years old when this was a hit and I must say without bragging... I knew good music then when I heard it. I still love this song today and I'm now 46.

  • @bhossast You are exactly right, I was a junior or senior in high school and I am now 56. The good old days for sure. Why dont they make em like that anymore?

  • @lynn3027 You know, I lived then and now in San Francisco and then it seemed like things were better then but I was a kid. This reminds me of going to Summer Bible School and there was family then. Mother and Father and there was respect from the Kids. A lot has been lost.

  • @bhossast ~ Amen, amen, so much of those times has been lost forever, I was a young girl when I heard this song my mom was a true r & b fan, she used to play her 45's and cook and clean at the same time, I do that now but of course I use the computer or my Ipod...lol ~ But music like this during times like that just simply cannot be replaced, I'm soooooo thankful to God and my parents for giving me life in 1966 {October 14th}; I'm so grateful to have grown up and hear this great music...!

  • This song makes you say Gotdamn! And muthafucka!

  • This song in just so fucking ridiculous. Untouchable in so many ways. Brings back some great memories.

  • This would be a tight song to flip

  • When love ws truly real.

  • grew up on this music. My mother has since passed, but this song just brings back so many childhood memories of her. she loved this song and now that I am an adult, have a child of my own, I've grown to listen to the late 60's, early 70's music and have passed it on to my daughter.

  • sounds like two adults to me ... can i get a amen or what?

  • I remember when i was 13 my mother would keep playing this song back to back. I hated it. when i got into my 20's I was a real hip Hop head. But i listened to it especially the intro & i Was repeating the same thing my mother had did years earlier. Go Figure. You just cant front on good music. I wish real music would come back

  • @mrslideinsideu2 hey you know what they say, like mother, like daugther:)

  • YES! The Iceman is legendary:D

  • Thats a mean bass! I dont know why youtube keep taking this song off!

  • I bought this record but gave it my then- girlfriend, something I came to regret.

    Thanks for posting this!!!!!!

  • looking for it a long time, thanx

  • I swear we played this song so many times we wore a hole in it. Still dancing cheek to cheek with the same man I was dancing with when it came out back in the 70s. We been married all this time. My One and Only love. Yes understanding is mello can't have this love without it.

  • This a truely beautiful song. The message, the music, the voices, the passion. They don't make meaningful songs like this anymore!

  • Yes in deed! One of Chicago's finest.

  • epic! i am so glad to have found this, one of the GOAT. Jerry and Brenda blended a rich ballad unequaled. and that's the way we did it back in the day. you just dont get this purity today. thanks again!

  • Thank you for this post! i've been waiting for this.

  • Just to have a love like the one they are singing about.

  • When this song came out, I as a youngster took a while to catch on to the fact that they had come to an understanding that they were not meant for each other. As I grew, I realized just how rare true "understanding" really is.

  • this is real music thank you

  • I loved this song. The Iceman was so cool...thanks for posting this.
