we are singing this but our choir director is having us do the soulfesh or however you pell it we are a symphonic choir and i think the soulfesh sounds better then the words
To everyone, this is obviously a German choir, so the "pacem" is really supposed to be pronounced that way. It'd only be "pah-chem" if they were English-speaking.
@Isabelerffa Actually, that'd the way the ancient Latin says it should be pronounced but the Latin of the church says it should be pronounced pah-chem. Seeing as that's the venue for a mass, I guess they'e doing it wrong... ;)
No offense to the girl singing but it really does look like she is lip singing. But I agree with Mtanic. And no offense to those in that choir or the girl, but I have seen much better Choirs sing this song. (my fav is my choir)
She isn't syncing, the audio and video are not synced that's why. And why do you come on and criticize other people's performances? I'm sure the person didn't post this so everyone can say how they can sing better than her. I think she sings wonderfully!
That's right. I assume what you hear in this cantate is Ecclesiastical Latin (Kirchenlatein), which can be distinguished from classical Latin by (among other things) an Italianate pronounciation.
The comment by jschubart is completely accurate and properly addresses those who stubbornly (and incorrectly) insist that these singers are mispronouncing "pacem".
So will the person(s) who thumbed his comment down, please explain why you did so.
If you disagree with a comment, don't just punch the thumbs down button. Explain yourself !
In Latein gibt es also doch vorgegebene ausspruchsformeln
actually there is something very endearing about her voice. I really love it! But what's funny is that this seems like a big deal....high density camera, big audience, gorgeous venue. So WHY ARE THEY ALL DRESSED LIKE THEY ARE COMING FROM A FOOTBALL GAME???? Even the lead is wearing JEANS!!!!! WTF??
since no living person actually heard an ancient roman speak latin, nobody knows how the right pronuciation sounds. The same thing with ancient greek, hebrew or aramaeic.
how do you all come to thinking, that I think it's "patem" ? Please, please tell me! I just mean thet the latin pronounciation of the "C" is unclear, because nobody who could tell us about it is alive.
Just as English is pronounced differently in different English speaking countries, so is Latin. Even in the days of the Roman Empire, Latin was pronounced differently according to locality. Even within ancient Rome, Latin was pronounced differently according to class.
Excellent point but perhaps not the most relevant. This canon dates from the time of medieval ecclesiastical Latin, so most likely after the fall of the Roman Empire and certainly not during the Republic...
My point is most relevant, whatever the date of the canon. Even in medieval times, Latin pronunciation varied by country, ALWAYS influenced by the vernacular. Latin (including church Latin), like English, has NEVER had a universal pronunciation.
As for the date of the canon, the style of the melody is late 18th c., NOT medieval. The M6th and m7th intervals of this melody were completely foreign to the aesthetic of the Middle Ages but very common in Mozart's time.

There was one thing that I noticed; the sound and the video do not seem to go together; there seems to be slight time lag.
Anyway, I enjoyed the video and the music a lot. Thanks.

criscros7 2 years ago
In Classical Latin "c" is always hard, so "pacem" would be prounounced "PAH-KEM".
In German "c" is like "ts". So "pacem" sounds like "PAH-TSEM", as in this video.
The Italians say "PAH-CHEM" because that's the way "c" is pronounced in Italian.
Roman Catholics In the USA follow the Italian pronunciation.
And then there's the kind of Latin pronunciation favored by lawyers and English dons. They would probably say "PAY-CHEM".

No.
They are correctly singing "PAH-TSEM"
because in German "c" is like "ts".
The Italians would say "PAH-CHEM" because that's how "c" is pronounced in Italian.
In the USA, choral groups singing Latin works tend to imitate the Italian pronunciation, even when singing Latin works written for German churches!
And lawyers and English dons would say "PAY-CHEM".
And if you were studying Classical Latin, you'd say "PAH-KEM".
