The tune composed by Karl Jenkins so when he moved in Softs, it became to their repertoire.Ian loved his capability to compose and Alan's guitar play very much.
I think Ian Carr recorded his "Belladonna" album (with A.Holdsworth )in June ´72. That composition here is from Karl Jenkins who was co-founder of Nucleus (the original track "Song for the bearded lady" is on Nucleus´well talk about it later" album) Jenkins and John Marshall left Nucleus in 1971. In June or July 1972 Jenkins joined Softmachine to replace the departing Elton Dean. Holdsworth followed to Softmachine in November 1973 !
Can't get enough of his playing. Guitar never sounded like this, nor will it ever, unless he's playing it! Awesome recording! I never heard anything Holdsworth did (live) this early in his career. Thanks for posting! Can this concert audio be purchased anywhere?
I just shit my pants. His playing is so incredible. It's a shame he's hidden it behind such terrible, artificial tone as of late. This raw-toned stuff of his earlier years is so incredible.
Cool early live clip of Allan. I always wondered what they were like but I've had the "Tempest" and "Soft Machine" vinyl and cd's for ages so I never bothered.
Awesome, thanks so much!!! Its fascinating to hear Allan play on what is effectively Hazard Profile and compare his playing in '72 to that of '75 - he rips here but in a more conventional way to that on Bundles. Sadly familiarity breeds contempt and we can lose sight of what would be astounding playing even today. He went on to Tempest after this recording and I thoroughly recommend his guitar dual with the incomparable Ollie Halsall on the incredible BBC In Concert recording - mind boggling!
Never heard this tune. Jazz all the way but in a special way. Holdsworth was and is unique. It sometimes sound like Mclaughlin on this, but Allans voice is his own. And the virtuosity.... Ala Charlie Parker or Dizzie..
He does not need overdriven guitar sound to express his speech.......
allan back then sounded a whole lot like shawn lane would have sounded 20 + years later. i really dig this rawer side of his

@alijav091: This predates SM's''Hazard Profile' by many years but it is essentially the same song that the Softs 'borrowed'.
