One thing the emulators will NEVER do with this game. The actual arcade box had a mechanical mechanism inside it and bang the bottom of the machine anytime qbert or the snake fell off. It was intended to sound like qbert fell to the bottom of the arcade cabinet in "real-life".
@jci10 Yes, that part was a "knocker", from a pinball machine. It's the mechanism that strikes the wood of the game cabinet to let everyone in the arcade know you were good enough to earn a replay :) Gottlieb was a huge maker of pinball machines at the time, and they attempted to also make video games. Q-Bert was by far their top video game success, and their only(?) monster hit.
@Krellan I really wish someone would bring back arcades full of "un-emulatable" games like those Pinball machines, Q-bert and those electronic/mechanical games that would be truely impossible to emulate except in a "holodeck". One arcade game involved firing a stream of water into a building bulidng. No, not 3d but a real water stream! There was this 3d-rainbow -hologram cowboy shooting game too and many more. *sigh*
@jci10 Agreed. You should go to California Extreme, held once a year in the summer. I played that water stream game before! Not the easiest game to keep clean, it had a habit of getting moldy, IIRC.
@Krellan If you place a few, scrapped clean pennies in the tank, and a shot of bleach it should keep the algae, mold from growing. California Extreme here I come!!
How come coily does not make the whooo falling sound as he falls? All you hear is the sound of him hitting the ground. Also the sound of the pig and that other thing that comes from the bottom don't make sounds like on the arcade machines.
@arcadetraderlax: The original arcade machine joystick was 4 way turned 45 degrees. I used the keyboard while playing MAME here, using 1,7,9 and 3 on the numeric keypad.
Ah, I see I watched and commented on this video several months back. VelvetRolo, I'm sure my comment that you "got lucky a few times" was that there were a few points where you were out of disks on the odd-numbered rows but the parity was OK, so you were still able to clear the board. I remember my way of getting out of that situation was to jump off the second row. It cost me a man but corrected the parity - more reliable than trying to get Sam or Slick to fix it for me.
@OBIT3: Your comment doesn't make sense. First of all, for Twin Galaxies, this game is so easy that there is method of scoring your game where it is considered over after you die 5 times, so your method would be ineffective for that. Also, you're talking about "odd-numbered rows." It doesn't matter what row the disks are on. The fact that you use the disc at all alters the sequencing, regardless of what row it's on. Who you trying to fool? Just curious.
@VelvetRolo No, there really is a difference between the disks on the even rows vs the odd rows. At 2:49, 3:45, and 5:32, I'd have used the row 4 disk, i..e. the one which can't change the parity, saving the row 3 disk. In all these cases, you still had the row 5 disk, but getting to it messes up more of the board. It also takes more time, making the entrance of Sam and Slick particularly unwelcome.
@OBIT3: It's been years since I've played seriously, but I think you're wrong. There is no difference. I was able to play forever, WITHOUT DYING, so whatever you're thinking is wrong.
@VelvetRolo No, sorry, but I really am correct about this. Try it yourself - there is a QBert in Yahoo Games to experiment with. Work up to level 5, get to a situation where you can't clear the board, then jump on a disk. You will find you still can't clear the board if the disk is on an even row (assuming Sam or Slick doesn't show up to change things) but you *can* clear the board if the disk is on an odd row.
@OBIT3:You're wrong. Send me a vid to disprove it, otherwise, you're totally wrong. I can play forever, without dying. Odd/even isn't guaranteed as you think. It depends what happened before. THINK man. THINK.
OBIT. It's all about TIMING. I have LEARNED THE TIMING. So, what you say is totally irrelevant. I know that If something has happened prior to where I am, then doing something else will work. I've learned it all, but that was long ago, so I can't explain specifics, but what I learned will ALWAYS work.
@VelvetRolo Well, man, I think this has been enough fun for one night. Test it on Yahoo Games, and, if you can maintain some objectivity (judging by your comments, this seems unlikely) you will see the difference. Sheesh, you video geeks are so temperamental.
@OBIT3: It has nothing to do with that. If I tell you I can play forever without dying, and you're disputing that with logic that I know is incorrect, then you're the one being temperamental. Show me a video dude, to convince me of your superiority. You won't be able to, because you aren't. It's really rather simple, isn't it?
@OBIT3: All right, after work today I fired up Yahoo Games, and played QBert. First of all, level 5 repeats. You don't get levels 6-9. There's a difference between level 5 and levels 6-9. Also, there's a peculiar bias for the green dude in particular, but all objects to bounce to the right. It's not 50/50. Quite often the green dude jumped right all the way down to the bottom/right corner. This is wrong. Something is messed up with the random.
Then, the second time it was on level 5.3, the game got stuck, and the score kept slowly going up, and that was the end of that game. It was hooped. But anyway, no, your theory is wrong. I can play exactly the same there with no problem. I'm not sure what your point was in telling me to play there. (Actually, I am, so pffft...)
@OBIT3: And if YOU can "maintain some objectivity" and THINK, one specific reason why your theory of using the discs on odd vs even rows is completely wrong, is you can't control what that green dude does, and therefore the exact state (or parity to use your word), isn't predictable. Anyway, as I've told you, I have techniques for waiting at the top for the green dude, and jumping on it. It works every time. Your technique of killing a man is of course silly.
@OBIT3: The reason why this "parity" is shifted, has nothing to do with what row you're on, it's the fact that QBert is dropped from the top... It's a "free jump", and THAT is what alters the sequencing. Even and Odd rows is irrelevant. You're totally wrong. Feel free to explain, but you won't be able to, because there's nothing to that. You're wrong.
@VelvetRolo Nah, at about 2:45 I would've headed straight for the 4th row disk and waited for Coily. The only issue is that the Green dude showed up right then, but it's usually possible to fix the damage he causes without losing a man, so long as you still have a disk on row 3.
@OBIT3: NO YOU IDIOT. I KNEW that the green dude was going to appear. You HAVE to take that into account. That's part of what I'm doing. It's all taken into account, and THAT is why it works. Geez, you're an idiot.
@OBIT3: You may also notice, it wouldn't have have worked for you at 2"49, whereas what I did, DID work, using the 3rd row disk. You're full of shit, I'm sorry to say. Goodbye.
@OBIT3: Also, I didn't actually watch, but I doubt there's anywhere in this vid where I'm outta disks. Tell me where, if there is... Could be. I can't be bothered to look.
At 6:41, you have only the disk off row 4, which won't change the parity. If you were unable to clear the board, you'd have had no disks to fix the parity.
At 7:59, your only disk is at the bottom. It could be used to fix the parity, but having to go all the way to the bottom would've messed the board up.
I have to admit, I'm a very tempermental game player, probably more tempermental than "the angry video game nerd." I can control my language better though :) And that level where you have to change the cubes to yellow with 3 different jumps would probably blast me off to the moon.
First, great job! Second, after you have to change cube colors 4 or more times, do you have strategy, or is it pretty much scrambling, since you're having to avoid those awful creatures as well? And, how many Colies have you lured off of the board with one disk? I think I've seen someone do two of them, but if you allow two to form you probably stalled too much!
@abysmalatrocious: Thanks. You can learn the timing of when the creatures come out, and work around that. Their bouncing is random directions though. I'm pretty sure only 1 coily snake ever appears at once, even if you stall. (It's interesting to try to get the lowest score possible, up to a certain level, which means avoiding jumping on the disks, and avoiding Coily instead)
@VelvetRolo You know, I wonder if some machines are programmed differently. I can remember seeing somebody get two Coilies to chase him to the Disk, but maybe that was just a bad dream. Now, how often did you see this: You THINK the Green Ball is all good, but I've seen people (myself included) fall off the board while the Green Ball is working! Overzealous, probably. Also, I've seen it only once: Slick or Sam colliding with an ugly creature and saying "@#$%&."
in 1946 roswell new mexico a e.t. craft crashed in a field. when the u.s. army retrieved the craft and finally found a way to open the door to the craft they where amazed at what they found. 2 small orange armless creatures that looked exactly like QBert.
Cool, I remember being able to run this game forever also. Like you, I'd start level 9 by running down the left side, then along the bottom. However, I'd try to save the disks on the third row because they could change the parity of the board. About 1 time out of 3, you can't clear the board on the last jump and need to do something to fix the parity. The disks on the odd-numbered rows could do that, but not the disk on the 4th row. In the video, I think you got lucky a few times. :)
@OBIT3: I meant to answer this more... Forgot. For example, at 1:08, the parity is wrong, so I jump onto the tile to fix it. Also, sometimes you can just stand on the top square, and wait for the green dude to jump down and change the colors. Then finish before coily gets back up to the top. There's a cool situation when you're standing on the top square.. It's the correct color. But the 2 below are wrong. Green dude jumps on one, you jump on the other, and the level is done!
I clearly remember this from the 80's. As for all the attributes as well as the sounds, those I long forgotten, till now. Thanks for sharing, brings back memories
I downloaded this game from the PSN stores (PS3) and its the first proper version of Q -bert I've had. Its ok, I guess. That's amazing. So in the higher levels the squares keep changing colors when you jump on them? Meaning, they don't stop changing after a certain number of repeats?
Yeah, 1..2..3..1..2..3..1..2..3.. forever. They should have done more with it. Maybe up to 5 colours! :) WIth more guys jumping around changing the colours.
Lol. These sounds aren't quite right though. QBert doesn't "swear" when he dies. The sideways jumping guys don't make their mumbling sound. And of course the arcade machine had a solenoid to make a thud when the snake (or QBert I think) jumped off the pyramid.
