Great video Craig. Not being picky because I think you should say it how you like. Also my announciation, pronounciation and general presentation is a bit sloppy, so I am not speaking from any almighty viewpoint. But... It's written 'wort' and pronounced 'wert'. Being dyslexic, this type of thing drives me mad. Like 'enough', 'plough', though etc. Or 'lead me until I've been lead' or 'read it until it is read'. It's a ridiculous language we have isn't it?
As watch this video drinking a shot of Tequila (that my aunt brought from Mexico) and a corona with salt & lime.I realise that the only time i think about brewing my own beer is when i'm unemployed and have to use coins(pennies).Because when i have money why wait 2 or 3 weeks for beer, when it takes 5 minutes to go to the store. But the videos are really very entertaining, and i think i will try to brew my own beerjust for the satisfaction of doing it....BUT IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF WORK
It's actually very easy! Thanks to Craig, I made my first kit beer two weeks ago. Drank my very first one tonight and it is delicious! If you just use the kit, the whole process will take no longer than an hour. The worst part is paying the money to buy the kit, but soon it will pay for itself lol. You're right though, the downer is the waiting part, and if you want beer you will still have to buy it, but brewing your own is much less costly. Hope you decide to try it, good luck!
u'r right about the starter's hobby man. I'm about to do same with tobacco. Yeah well, tobac=cancer... I know the riddles on that. But, it's cancerous only since the 'med-corp-govt" got involve(with bleach).Anyway,I've stumble here arond lookin fr a cheap flea repellent fr my dog, and found ways to cut on taxes;))U.S. "con-citoyens" (contributers in french) won't understand, and others arond globe too... hey, we are con, with religs and taxes, end of story.
Craig, thanks for this great info...!!! I've costed the ingredients out in UK cost (although I'm a South African based in the UK) and I should be able to source the ingredients for 29 pence a UK pint, where the standard beer here costs £3.00 + in Herefordshire pubs nowadays... It's summer and time for loads of Barbeques . . . .
here in Sweden a decent "micro brewish" beer goes for CAD $ 3-5 (some for alot more) a bottle... So I'm definitely with you on the hobby vs. necessity thing ;)
and.. the correct pronunciation (if you accept that the word stems from an older Germanic/Norse word) would be (and still is in Sweden) "Vört". The "ö" is best pronounced as a Frenchman trying to say "laugh", ie. L-ö-f - if you get my drift ;) So Wort as you say would be an ok substitute for the real thing ;)
I feel your pain with beer prices. Here in Japan its about $13 for a SIX pack of normal, plain beer. Any specialty beer will cost about 4 or 5 dollars a bottle.
Getting annoyed with this, I've decided to make my own.
Hey Craig. Yeah, it's a common mispronunciation - to the point where I just ignore it, but if people out there are meticulous enough to flame you about it, then yes, wort is pronounced "wert" traditionally.
But again, who cares. Most still just call it "wort."
I've been told to pronounce it wert. But that doesnt sound good to me, when I say the word wort, it just brings my mind to images of an old european some place or another over a hot bubbling pot brewing something almost magical. Wert just sounds like a word.
I'm currently using the micro brew kit to do another Lager. Plus I have a stout and an Indian Pale Ale going in other fermenters in addition to some white wine. I will look for a Cooper's wheat kit and see if I can get one. Good luck with the MB kit. It's a great way to start. If you have ANY questions, feel free to ask. The airlock on my Lager was not bubbling. It was an air leak in my cooper's fermenter. I fixed it, so rely on me if any problems like that arise. Go for it, it's a great kit.
The booklet I got recommends a food safe lubricant to be put around the rim of the pail, where the rubber ring meets it, and around the airlock where it sits in the grommet. I don't know what a food safe lube is, so I opted to go and get some KY gel. Just do it on a Tuesday when there's hardly anyone else in the store, and opt for a male checkout person LOL. Anyway, it worked perfectly. Careful how tight you screw on the lid!!!
Just a note. You can reuse starsan over and over again as long as you mix it with distilled water. It only needs about 30 seconds to kill most of the bad critters, 3 minutes for the most effective sanitization.
How much is in the can? usualy if it's around a kg in the can you add 1kg of fermentables if you are making it up to 40 pints. You can always add more if your hydrometer reading is too low.
you actually can reuse one-step, as long as it's within 24 hours from the time you hydrated it. i usually get a new batch of beer going on bottling day, so i end up using half the amount of sanitizer.
Craig you a home brew GOD thanx for all your vids they have been a great help as i have just started to home brew myself. im making a mild at the moment and will get some more fermenting buckets and need to get bottles :)
my partner and i have been mulling over some ideas about adding flavour to my batches. the ideas are about adding fruit syrups like a raspberry syrup to make like a raspberry kindof beer. or honey even, would this be a bad idea?
No. Adding fermentables to your beer is a great idea. Honey is a great additive or even maple syrup. I've never tried fruit juice but as long as it's naturally sweetened, not diet.
awsome so if i used honey or syrup or even fruit, since it has it's own natural sugar i'm guessing i'd have to use less sugar. how would go about determining the correct amounts or would i just wing it and see how it goes?
How strange that all the comments pertain to saving money, nobody seems to realise the other advantages of individual taste and the pleasure of making it by oneself.
When you've been making beer for over 20 years, the pleasure is only the drinking part. It's a pleasure to drink good beer that cost you next to nothing. bottling day sucks :)
i can get those coopers wort cans here in Sydney, Australia for $7 au each meanwhile a carton of 24 bottles beer costs between $35-$45 au, so i am really going to try this home brewing thing out. great videos craig, really a great intro to get started, wish me luck, i just brought a coopers micro-brew kit.
I think your camera angle is the best to see what your doing . Looking forward to your cooking videos too . I cook a lot and i like to learn more too , Chow
Cheers Craig! Great videos (new and old). I'm sure I don't have to tell you but, ignore the people who leave undesirable comments. I'm sure they make great beer but they are so caught up in the pride of their process of making their own beer that they have forgotten the only reason we're drinking it is because it is fun! I could care less about the process and worry more about the actual quality. I follow your method rather closely and anyone who has had my beer says it's the best they have had
Just kidding! Nice to see another brew day with Craig! I love your easy going and matter-of-fact manner... I can explain the "wort/wert" thing...
It is spelled wort, but the German pronounciation is VERT, so I guess some people HEAR it pronounced vert and assume it is spelled that way...I imagine we Westerners can pronounce it how we want huh?
yay 1st comment! nice vid craig, I'm not into the beer making yet but do enjoy your vids. I'm still to post a wine making vid following yours and merddyn2002's tips so i'll let u know when to expect it. later.

You could wing it or use a hydrometer to determine your starting gravity which should be around 1.040 for beer or a bit higher for stronger beer
