Lemmy Mit Uns,not Gott. The Hell's Angels call their meetings Church.I read that 20 years ago. So,according to the Bible,a Church is where any 2 or more people gather in Gott's name.
you can look yourself in the mirror a thousand times and tell yourself you believe, you can walk the highways, biways and every field upon the earth tellin' yourself you believe, you can bend your knees in supplication at the wooden pews of every church in every country and repeat to yourself that you believe, but by your own rules there is no hiding from him. @MotorheadDrew Yeah, even all the remastered anniversary additions and everything are really muddy. "why does this CD sound like a 3rd generation dubbed cassette?"
If I remember correctly from interviews and stuff, the whole recording process of this album was really haphazard and they basically just wrote it and slapped it together. The writing and performance aspect is so brilliant too.
And then whatever album you put on after this one is always shockingly loud because you have it so cranked.
I think the song is brilliant. As a kid, and agnostic, I took it one way; as a Christian I take it a different way. Don't think Tull was dissing Jesus... just those of us who seem to make a royal mess out of following Christ. Or saying we're following Him...
one of Ian's finest songs, speaks volumes about socialised religion, the pettiness and "abuse" of prayer,I will never burn out on Anderson's brilliance as a writer and flutist. lots of people "didn't get it"beyond what was played on the air.Their loss, really,I put in a disk and my artistic juices flow....his music makes me WANT to create,be it a drawing,or carving,or floral work,I feel compeled to go to work on something lovely.I just love his skills to take me to his thoughts
@gogolplex74 As far as I know Ian Anderson has been very clear about religions: He does not take it seriously and HE IS NOT A CHRISTIAN because as he have said many times before he does NOT believe in the main dogmas of Christianity: RESURRECTION of JESUS & The miracles performed by Christ, DIVINITY of JESUS, Christ being the ONLY way, etc... IAN ANDERSON IS AN AGNOSTIC PANTHEIST like ALBERT EINSTEIN, SPINOZA and MYSELF !
Listen to the lyrics people. At no point does Ian question the existance of God/s or shun those who choose to believe in such a beings existance. Instead he launches his attack at religion and those within it who seek to pervert and twist this faith to their own selfish ends.

@DiazdelVivar From what I can tell at a first glance this is about corrupted religion bending and twisting their god to whatever they please. I.E. kill that guy because GOD wills it. It eventually makes him powerless and his name loses value.
@3234718 Religion and absurd? If that would be true, then Ian would not probably waste his time and make such nice song -- which is very religious btw!
@gardask So according do your logic, Ian Anderson wrote this very religious song, therefore proving that religion is rational and reasonable. The ark, the guy in the whale, zombie jesus and all that are totally legit.

@3234718 You did not offend me, but you are acting like a child, no one is impressed. You are immature and obviously lack the mental capacity to make a solid argument. You rely on childish insults to strengthen your arguments instead of intelligent ideas. Acting like a four year old on the play ground does not make you smart. You can mock me all you want, but you still have proven nothing other than your immature nature.
@fatmanrocks13 Email me outside of this and I'll destroy your theism with reason. Ongoing comment arguments are annoying and I humbly appologize to all who'v had to endure this. Lets email or IM and hash this out, if you'd like. I'm not childish; I'm hilarious. *blows raspberry*
@fatmanrocks13 Fine i will PM you my adress and keep in mind that i do not support or denounce any religions. If you are going to religion bash please do not waste my time. My problem is the attitude not the opinion that you have.
@3234718 then I guess you didn't understand this song (or lyrics as a matter of fact). Please, don't post comments of nonsense, unless you want to appear as a complete moron. I feel sorry for you being a Tull fan..
@juresaiyan I understand the song lyrics perfectly well. My comment is: "Religion is absurd and this song is awesome." Is this song not awesome? I bet you don't think religion is absurd. I do. Have a great day.
@FiteNoMore exellent comment . being an accoustic guitar player, his stle was so different(guitar rythms) they were hard to learn, the timing for thick as a brick took me a year to "get" Saw him live more than anyon else I think. Here's to exposing Satanism an its octopus tendrils and root it out..Old testament says make war with evil..Quran says the same..I am sick of the evil myself..Cold wind to Valhalla.
One thing I know for sure is that this group of musicians played a big part of my music tutalage in my young years, attributing to the musician I am today. And I'm thankful for that.
Worldviews are important. Many of them include God and religion. But they are how we derive meaning and self-esteem. Once we think we've found something that accomplishes that, the first instinct is to convince others of it's righteousness. Witness that dynamic in action on this thread.
I remember when I was about five, and this song would come on...and I would squeal with joy. I'm seventeen now, and it still gives me chills. That is my childhood, right there....to quote the song, my god. Such a great band.
I found God...and found out God was never missing. And I take away from this song what RELIGION has done to God. "The bloody Church of England..in chains of mystery..." Religion has given Christianity some really terrible public relations people.
@garethb1961 Haha, its two internet memes put into one (Y U NO, and sauce) Y u no is just a funny way of saying things, and sauce means evidence. I was simply referring to the fact that the whole religion argument is dumb, because people will believe what they want, but I like you, so keep living.
It's sad that not everyone finds God in their lifetime! I did, finally, at age 46 He came for me. Alice Cooper, who I grew up on in Michigan in the 1970's, is a Christian. I was hoping today to read that the members of Jethro Tull had found God by now. not. Disco queen, Donna Summer, is a Christian Minister now. I hope you find Him someday. Jethro Tull "Aqualung" is great music. I grew up on it, smoking pot, cigarettes, drinking, porn, etc. Those days are over for me, thank God!
I'm sorry you have not found God yet, nor believe in Him. God never promised us that life would be a garden of roses! You only have to look so far as your physical body to prove God created us all! The inner ear is very, very complicated! The heart, brain, fingers, skin, blood, blood veins, eyesight, tongue, nerves, ankles, muscles, tendons, women's reproductive system, men's testicles, penis, emotions, cry, happiness, anger, passion, Love, rage, tears, intestines, etc. Darwin anyone?? NOPE!
There is always who says that to believe in God is madness and who says that God loves us and to don't believe is an awful sin.I never heard that life without creator or programmer is statistically impossible but the real madness is to say that he loves us.Go tell God loves us to a mother who sees her son die or to someone whose life is only pain. Why God should love us if he has planned a life that needs the pain to continue? We created the myth of God that loves us! Is it too logical??
This is so great you can`t compare them to anyone, they are much alike Prodigy in style,---> you can`t compare them to anyone, and it seems to be a problem for people to understand that.
In Norway during the the 70`s we had alot of good groupes going, but since people could not identify the groups etc... with anything they knew from befor this became alienated for alot of people.
Today 30-40 years after, people are asking for the same bands...

I can also highly recommend Iron Maiden's "sign of the cross" live, from rock in rio...or "For the greater good of god"..from 2005's A Matter of Life and Death CD.. tremendous songs, can find both on youtube with lyrics onscreen....also Dream Theater's "In the Name of God"...live at Budokan.....try them....you WON'T be disappointed
@stradlin62 Try the Bursting Out live CD........it was recorded at a concert in Italy in 1978 or near then. one of my favorite all-time live recordings.............. and in my opinion ..Rock Island was a hugely underrated CD from Tull.... many excellent songs on that one from 1989....whaler's Dues....Ears of Tin......but you can't go wrong with any Tull CD
If only Jethro Tull brought albums like "Aqualung" (1971), "Thick as a Brick" (1972), "A passion play" (1973), and "Too old to rock'n'roll: too young to die" (1976) equal to 4 LPs of the rock genre on the market - but noted must remain, that mere "Aqualung" must be regarded as indicative and milestones such as the title song, "My god," "Wind up" and "Locomotive Breath" is an indivisible disturber sized skeleton, which ensures that just may be missing this one album in any record collection.
Interesting point about the IQ's, but give Lennon his due. He paid his dues and his bills, as they all must, and his post Beatles work must bow down to no one!
This is my favorite song from the Aqualung album - NOT Aqualung and NOT locomotive breath which seem to the two most popular songs from this album. Of course, I still like the last two but they can't close to this song, as far as I am concerned.
This music at its best........not so steer you along but enough room for introspection......who misses the uncertainty of the 70's......I know I do.......
We had it. In the sixties and seventies. We had the truth in our sights. Just about to wake up and smell the handwriting on the wall.
What happened? How has it devolved into the zombie culture we have now?
I'll give you one guess: right! it was the drugs. it was our weakness, and the ruling elete knew it. They just let us have it, and we narcotized ourselves right back under their thumbs.

If the average IQ of the human race was 25 points higher....... Jethro Tull would have been wayyyy bigger than the Beetles ever were.............. my 2 favorite song composers are Ian Anderson....and Steve Harris....
@WrathchildNH I agree with you... well, except for Steve Harris, maybe there are 4 or 5 composers I consider better, but it's all a matter of opinion, and I think he's great anyway
@WrathchildNH Well, Anderson was a great songwriter, and their music was important during that era -- but I think your claim might be a stretch, Re: them being way bigger than the Beatles. It's not like Lennon and McCartney were writing brainless crap. There are hundreds of brilliant, underrated songwriters who also never became famous due to the masses being asses-- like, say, Richard Thompson, John Prine, John Hiatt, etc -- all of whom I would rank ahead of Anderson.
@WrathchildNH I like peter gabriel too. Although some of his stuff with Genesis is very trippy (lyric wise). Steve Harris and Ian are great. My favorite song lyric wise by Ian is heavey horses.
@WrathchildNH Ian and Tull have, because of the 'follow the trend' no matter what' thinking, have been Severely overlooked by the mainstream. If a poll were taken of 'musicians' in All forms who listened to All forms, asking 'who's the most talented', Tull would have a shot at top spot.
@WrathchildNH If you're so smart how come you misspelled Beatles? You're not smart if you listen to Jethro Tull. Music doesn't make you smart. I like Black Sabbath so I'm satanic, then, right? I love Tull but don't think you're something else for liking them. And the Beatles were over by then, and Tull still didn't sell as much in 1971 when Aqualung came out. Believe me there are idiot Jethro Tull fans too. They didn't really get a lot of publicity in their time to be a huge success.
@LovinSporkful I grew up with Sabbath too....and Wrathchild is a classic Iron Maiden tune.....all I was saying is musicians like the Tull members and Frank Zappa for instance, have been hugely underrated their whole careers... Pink Floyd is another great...but they were able to break into mainstream without sacrificing brilliance.... not easy
@WrathchildNH Ian Anderson is wonderful and Jethro Tull is one of my favorite bands but the Beatles are on of the most intellectual bands in hostory. Clearly, thi is subjective but by any measure, the Beatles outstripped evry act in history both commercially and artistically 15 ground breaking albums in 7 years, Lennon's first album was the most brutally honest artistic epic howl in music history-nobody's touched it since..but as Mr. Lennon once said comparisions are odious so cheers mate
@WrathchildNH Obviously you don't know how IQ works. 100 is the average IQ of a certain age, and if everyone was more intelligent, and there was still a bell curve of intelligence, the average would still be 100 and everyone would have the same IQ as before.
@chefslEDGEhammR Nice try, but yet you are right, yet so very wrong. Sure, it would be still 100 because of bell curve, but the average intelligence comparative to ours would be higher. So yeah, why don't you gain a few points before you troll? huh? Yea.
@WrathchildNH if the average IQ of the human race was 25 points higher, someone would be doing their math wrong, since the IQ scale is defined such that the average is 100 :)
@AshbyzTr33z Nice........ I've seen both Maiden and Tull live 30+ times....Tull not since 2003....Maiden 11 times (7dif, tours) since 2000 when Bruce and Adrian returned...... Maiden's material this decade is terrific .....and they are better than ever live...
@WrathchildNH That's incredible, I wish I could have been so lucky. I'm only 18, though, and I didn't start really getting into music until a couple years ago. I've only seen Maiden once, though they're by far my favorite band out there. That concert was the best day of my life, I don't think anything could have topped Hallowed Be Thy Name. You're definitely right about their new music. Final Frontier was, in my opinion, one of the best albums they've ever made.
@AshbyzTr33z Good to see at least a few people your age have an ear and mind for quality.... my youtube channel has some great playlists I made of Maiden shows , Bruce solo albums (fantastic stuff)... and others ...gonna do a couple Tull also.... did you know Iron Maiden did a cover of Tull's Cross-eyed Mary ?. it's on youtube , pretty sweet
@WrathchildNH I'm gonna check out your channel, sounds awesome. And I agree, way too many kids my age either get into metalcore or pop stuff. Disappointing that the music which is popular today can't even rival the music that was popular a few decades ago. (And yeah, I did know about the Cross-Eyed Mary cover, pretty cool stuff.)
The Bloody Church only refers to a failed system. Thank Jesus The Church has improved vastly, omit the last scandal of course.

If you read the back of the album Aqualung, you will see that Jethro Tull is both anti-god and anti-religion.
The prose I am referring to starts with "In the beginning Man created God, and in the image of Man created he him."

@fatmanrocks13 I'm sowee I hurt your feewings. Are you gonna cwy? Boohooohoo. A dude rising from the grave sounds pretty zombie-ish to me.
3234718 6 months ago

Worldviews are important. Many of them include God and religion. But they are how we derive meaning and self-esteem. Once we think we've found something that accomplishes that, the first instinct is to convince others of it's righteousness. Witness that dynamic in action on this thread.

Those days are over for me, thank God!
bradscolo 10 months ago
I'm sorry you have not found God yet, nor believe in Him. God never promised us that life would be a garden of roses! You only have to look so far as your physical body to prove God created us all! The inner ear is very, very complicated! The heart, brain, fingers, skin, blood, blood veins, eyesight, tongue, nerves, ankles, muscles, tendons, women's reproductive system, men's testicles, penis, emotions, cry, happiness, anger, passion, Love, rage, tears, intestines, etc. Darwin anyone?? NOPE!
bradscolo 10 months ago
There is always who says that to believe in God is madness and who says that God loves us and to don't believe is an awful sin.I never heard that life without creator or programmer is statistically impossible but the real madness is to say that he loves us.Go tell God loves us to a mother who sees her son die or to someone whose life is only pain. Why God should love us if he has planned a life that needs the pain to continue? We created the myth of God that loves us! Is it too logical??

I can`t do anything else than bow and agree.

What happened? How has it devolved into the zombie culture we have now?

If the average IQ of the human race was 25 points higher....... Jethro Tull would have been wayyyy bigger than the Beetles ever were.............. my 2 favorite song composers are Ian Anderson....and Steve Harris....
WrathchildNH 1 year ago 51
@WrathchildNH I agree with you... well, except for Steve Harris, maybe there are 4 or 5 composers I consider better, but it's all a matter of opinion, and I think he's great anyway
Aqualung1989 1 year ago 6
@WrathchildNH Well, Anderson was a great songwriter, and their music was important during that era -- but I think your claim might be a stretch, Re: them being way bigger than the Beatles. It's not like Lennon and McCartney were writing brainless crap. There are hundreds of brilliant, underrated songwriters who also never became famous due to the masses being asses-- like, say, Richard Thompson, John Prine, John Hiatt, etc -- all of whom I would rank ahead of Anderson.
MusicWriter1965 1 year ago
@WrathchildNH I like peter gabriel too. Although some of his stuff with Genesis is very trippy (lyric wise). Steve Harris and Ian are great. My favorite song lyric wise by Ian is heavey horses.

@WrathchildNH Ian and Tull have, because of the 'follow the trend' no matter what' thinking, have been Severely overlooked by the mainstream. If a poll were taken of 'musicians' in All forms who listened to All forms, asking 'who's the most talented', Tull would have a shot at top spot.
weewilly49 1 year ago
@WrathchildNH If you're so smart how come you misspelled Beatles? You're not smart if you listen to Jethro Tull. Music doesn't make you smart. I like Black Sabbath so I'm satanic, then, right? I love Tull but don't think you're something else for liking them. And the Beatles were over by then, and Tull still didn't sell as much in 1971 when Aqualung came out. Believe me there are idiot Jethro Tull fans too. They didn't really get a lot of publicity in their time to be a huge success.
LovinSporkful 1 year ago
@LovinSporkful I grew up with Sabbath too....and Wrathchild is a classic Iron Maiden tune.....all I was saying is musicians like the Tull members and Frank Zappa for instance, have been hugely underrated their whole careers... Pink Floyd is another great...but they were able to break into mainstream without sacrificing brilliance.... not easy
WrathchildNH 1 year ago
@WrathchildNH Ian Anderson is wonderful and Jethro Tull is one of my favorite bands but the Beatles are on of the most intellectual bands in hostory. Clearly, thi is subjective but by any measure, the Beatles outstripped evry act in history both commercially and artistically 15 ground breaking albums in 7 years, Lennon's first album was the most brutally honest artistic epic howl in music history-nobody's touched it since..but as Mr. Lennon once said comparisions are odious so cheers mate
slappyabromowitz 1 year ago
@WrathchildNH Obviously you don't know how IQ works. 100 is the average IQ of a certain age, and if everyone was more intelligent, and there was still a bell curve of intelligence, the average would still be 100 and everyone would have the same IQ as before.
chefslEDGEhammR 1 year ago 3
@chefslEDGEhammR Nice try, but yet you are right, yet so very wrong. Sure, it would be still 100 because of bell curve, but the average intelligence comparative to ours would be higher. So yeah, why don't you gain a few points before you troll? huh? Yea.

WrathchildNH 11 months ago
@WrathchildNH That's incredible, I wish I could have been so lucky. I'm only 18, though, and I didn't start really getting into music until a couple years ago. I've only seen Maiden once, though they're by far my favorite band out there. That concert was the best day of my life, I don't think anything could have topped Hallowed Be Thy Name. You're definitely right about their new music. Final Frontier was, in my opinion, one of the best albums they've ever made.
AshbyzTr33z 11 months ago
@AshbyzTr33z Good to see at least a few people your age have an ear and mind for quality.... my youtube channel has some great playlists I made of Maiden shows , Bruce solo albums (fantastic stuff)... and others ...gonna do a couple Tull also.... did you know Iron Maiden did a cover of Tull's Cross-eyed Mary ?. it's on youtube , pretty sweet

@WrathchildNH I'm gonna check out your channel, sounds awesome. And I agree, way too many kids my age either get into metalcore or pop stuff.
