Yes, without Wilder's producing touch some of the Depeche Mode feeling has been lost. The latest albums are good but not in the class of the ones in which Wilder was still onboard.

Sure, these last 4 studio albums have all been great in themselves, and still better than a lot of the other so-called "great artists" who release pretty mediocre albums, but I always believed Depeche Mode peaked with Musis For the Masses and Violator. They have never been better than then. Truly on top of the world.

Ultra vas an incredibly important album because it saved Depeche Mode and made a lot of new fans. Sounds of the Universe was pretty uneven in my mind.

Ultra was the last briliant album.. the rest after it should be "leave in silence"... Alan got really this thing in the studio that made Martin's songs fascinated.. pity that they parted ways.. still hoping for reconcile though :))

Ok, everybody has got their taste. In my opinion things can be overproduced too and loose a lot of its charm. SoFaD was a departure from the classic Depeche Mode sound and a bit too "ordinary stadium rock" sounding, also there are a few rather bland tracks on that album whereas Music for the Masses is great throughout (in my opinion).

Ultra was fine and it grew on me, but I still expected more and was a bit disappointed. Some of the magic was gone. I prefered Exciter to Ultra.

I agree. Although Playing the Angel was a bigger commercial success, I never liked the producer, and was sad to hear he would return to produce Sounds of the Universe. Exciter, which in my mind still sounded "Depeche Mode" was the last album I praised.

I read here that Exciter was produced by Mark Bell of LFO. Great, because I like LFO too, and their innovative electronic music of the early 90's, and have two LFO albums. Suddenly it all seems clear why I prefer Exciter.

1984...here in the USA DM had virtually no air play on the radio....today approaching♠ thirty years of hits....all alternative sound....these guys begin something that many people in the alternative world, way before the masses accepted DM.

Even today...it's hard to find DM in the USA Pop radio...No complaints mind you. Just an observation....to all the HATERS Of DM...Fuck YOU!!!
