  • By far my favorite version of this song.

  • speaking to me dad today who is irish and we saying how the oldies like dubliners, rovers, clancy's brothers no longer songs coming through as many Bars/pubs in Ireland use dj and it's sad to hear and wonder if younger gen bands cont the songs and style rebel or none rebal songs:(

  • Banjo Barney from Donnycarney does it again. The music of the Dubliners will live on forever

  • God bless The Dub`s! Saw them often and in only two Days ahead they in Hamburg!!! I know it will be a pleasure and a grant Show to see this awsome Men.

THIS IS HANDMADE MUSIC!! Forget thr Castingshows!

  • thumbs up irish australians

  • go on ye good thing, barney ye boy ye :D

  • Rock on Barney! :D

  • I came back to Norway after being 8 months in Ireland. I have lived in Ireland twice before. Both north and south. I write stories from Belfast and Dublin. I have perormed poetry on both cities. I live both cites and the whole island as it was my own brother, sister, and my beloved. I am sad to say that I might never return to my emeral island. Ireland will always be in my heart. And some of me will alwyas linger on my island. Listening to Dubliners brings me right back to the island I love....

  • I'm 16, I usually listen to Hardcore bands like Gallows and Your Demise,

    BUT THIS IS FUCKING IMMENSE.

  • @alexypietheguitarguy good on ye pal!!!

  • @alexypietheguitarguy You're showing some really good taste.

  • great voice !

  • You're the rolling king, Barney! Superb! :D

  • I don't use word "epic" too much - it's reserved for really special stuff. But this, here is EPIC. Glad I could saw them live, long live Dubliners!

  • a tyneside shanty

  • @3tangle3

Can't you just see the sailors raising the anchor of a tall ship when you hear this song?

    :-))

    "Sailing Cape Horn"

    /watch?v=X840oaD6R14

  • @3tangle3 Thats right..

  • 0:00-4:41 pure awesomeness! Nothing today can compare to the Dubliner's!

  • i would love 2 be in south australia out of all the places i have bein that is the best

  • very good song well done barnnie and the crew

  • The only thing that could have improved this show is if Luke had been there too

  • I normally don't comment, but had to jump in here. I am a fan of both The Dubliners (RIP Luke, Ronnie, and all the others who have passed on through the years) AND The Pogues. I can tell you that I really enjoy all the great music that both bands have released.

Much of the music that The Dubliners have released (especially the Luke versions) are considered by a majority of the folk music world to be THE definitive versions.

The two bands don't play the same style; can't compare! :)

  • Does anyone else think Barneys hands look like he's still got his banjo in them when he just has them at his side?

  • So far 6 people died in the outback :-)

  • jimi hendrixs favorite folk band

NO lies he really liked these guys

  • I just listed to 30 secs of The Prouges Version and very quckly came back to the Dublners. This version has more of an emotional feel to it. The Prouges is just too fast.

  • @kelgels

Dubliners version is more Journeyman than the Pogues version. And longer journeys... and the grey beards...

    The better it is....

  • @Holm182 - Bah! The Dubliner's version pales by comparison. As for this Barney fellow, he sounds both contrived and weak. As I sit and listen to this tripe, I can't help but feel sorry for "fans" of traditional UK music who can't appreciate the brilliance of The Pogues.

  • @Aggiechilds ummmm you do realise this is a traditional shipping song? I am Australian and this is how we learnt it at school....its a song sung to the time of hauling ship sails, not a quick rock song!

  • @Aggiechilds You're so far off the mark that it's not even funny... Do you not realise that if it wasn't for the original Dubliners there wouldn't BE any Pogues? Shane McGowan himself would be absolutely horrified by your ignorant comments... Fair enough, the Dubs are nothing like what they were years ago, but show some respect. As for Barney, never had the most powerful voice but he's some banjo player. Give the man a break, I'll be delighted if I can sing like that in my 70s

  • @Aggiechilds Its an Australian traditional song. Did you not notice "in South Australia I was born"? Also, The Dubliners are not from the UK. Dublin is in the republic. You sure are shit at geography.

  • @pisswizard It's not Australian. Dont know where it came from but im pretty sure it wasn't us

  • Heaver me by!

  • Interesting to hear you singing! Greetings from Germany! Dieter

  • im leavin dublin for south australia in 2 weeks, cant wait, guna b bangin out the dubliners when i get there! and wolfetones and the chieftans =] will miss my crazy irish people!

  • @Aggiechilds - Beggin' your pardon, girlie, but we're not here to see the Pogues. We're here to see the Dubliners.

    Now shurrup. Barney's singin'.

  • @Aggiechilds Too bad Floggin Molly didnt do it then we really hear it!!!!! I luv the Pogues but the Dubliners are Holy esp Barney and John! R.I.P. Ronnie and Luke!

  • @Aggiechilds - well, the Pogues are what they are, but what they're not is "the real deal" as far as folk music goes. They're a bastardized rock/punk electric band that bowdlerizes folk songs into a weird electric mishmash. This is a lot closer to "the real deal" - meaning the way folk songs were sung by the folks who made them up. The P's do better writing their own stuff rather than ruining trad songs.

  • @Aggiechilds How the f*ck can you call The Pogues version "the real deal"??? Seriously.. The Pogues play with no soul at all. The Dubliners on the other hand, and especially Barney McKenna sings direcly from his heart.

  • Shurrup I'm singing now, well said Barney. One of a kind.

  • from another south aussie ,proud they wrote about the place i live & enjoy

  • From a South Aussie - It's not that Bad :))

Great Song - makes me proud

  • 6 persons don´t have green blood

  • @klassetompa i dont have green blood, and i dont think that in any way means i cant like this song

  • The really sad thing is if a band like the Dubliners were to go on 'talent' shows such as the x factor they would be completely bypassed for the likes of JLS and so on. This music has heart, character and soul not like some of the stuff released nowadays

  • This is Barney's best by far.

  • It's not like in the most modern songs where every artist sounds equal, these are voices with character!

  • Ray Charles has watched this video 6 times and still can't find the like button!

  • it's a shame I resigned to enjoying music like this on youtube... it's social music but none of my friends have good taste like me;)

  • b irish

  • as i said yonks ago: This is what it would've sounded like back in the Roaring Days!!! Magic!!!

  • I'm from Australia; this is one of the first songs that alot of the schools teach people at a very young age in Primary school. :D:D great song, love alot of the old irish ballads. Especially this one.

  • god bless barney, he dont have the best singing voice but by god can he belt out a song with feeling. this is what music is about. pure class.

  • my 3-year-old's favorite Dubliner is "Banjo Barney!"

  • They played this on the concert yesterday, Barney is the best and he sings with real passion

  • i meet barney in my local dentist in tallaght got a picture in all what a legend love it :D

  • the dubliners 4 life im glad to be irish

  • It´s to late to stop it now!

    Dubliners forever :)

  • I saw him sing this song live just yesterday!!! It was absolutely awesome!!!

  • Dubliners for ever!!!! Es ist zu spät zum Aufhören.

  • Haul away now you rollin' kings...... magic

  • pure magic. Goosepimples

  • einfach genial wie Barney es singt, super...

  • THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE. God sees down. If I'd ever be blessed to get over there, I'd lay my drunken head upon your porch and wait for tomorrow. God watches over you because he sees you.

  • Great!

  • Barney is the man!

  • I really can't help playing this over and over again!

    The Dubliners absolutely rock!!

  • Clancy Brothers did it better.

  • @sandinmyears Yeah their version was faster- brill!

But this guy does have a great voice. Pretty good version I think.

  • He is still playing the Banjo 2:05 . I think Barney could do it while he sleeps ^^ Great Man

  • In South Australia I was born

  • Rivals the Pogues' version!

  • Barney is an institution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best there is,best there was, best there ever will be.

My dream is to see him live one fine day.

  • I saw him in Newcastle a few weeks ago, he was a total showstopper! A real star.

  • Barney zu hören ist immer wieder ein Verknügen, er ist einfach super :-)

    Barney is damn good

  • Barney's voice gives such inspiration. He loves his music and gives us the audience a joy hearing he pure voice. Dubliners has had so many sincere singers in their group. In Canada, I cannot help but truly enjoy this Irish group. LIfe needs such joy.

  • south aussie is creap compared to ireland

  • The Dubliners in my heart<3

  • I love Barney's accent and, even if he has no "perfect" voice, I think he's a great singer!

  • right, right!

  • @Shannariano

I love him singing because he PUT HEART when he does it :)

  • "...Haul away you rolling kings, heave away, haull away..." is a phrase stuck in my head now since the first time I say this clip some days ago. I often find myself sitting and mumbling it at work. :-)

    Barney is so damn good..

  • @flashkvist

You are not alone mate :-)

I miss Dublin & Ireland like I miss my own heart & my Love...

  • Barney is awesome!

  • Barney we love you!!!

  • Barney, wat a man, play's the banjo like he's born with it in his hands, good sence of humor, good voice, you just got to love the man!!!

  • this is just fabulous.. you can't find more to say about it..

  • Sit up all the modern "Rock" stars, leave the stylists behind and see how it should be done!

    3:38/4:04!?! Awesome!

  • Brilliant!!

He must have had some drinks with a favorite writer of mine: Patrick Kavanagh at one time. A time when musicians and poets would be thrown out after one pub after anotehr just to write about it afterwards...

    Regards

One who finished his book on Kavanagh regular seat in Phoenix Bar in Dundalk, Ireland...

  • @denismcollins1 they won't listen to you, 'cause they're deaf, my friend

  • ya never see him singing much

  • isn't he still with us?

  • yeh i cocked up i meant to put ronnie drew lol sorry got mixed up with meself :)

  • Hopefully Barney will sing South Australia or Fiddlers Green tonight.

I can't wait to see them for the first time on stage!

  • If you'd like to find out about an Irishman bound for South Australia, you could check out nicholas delaney on gurgle

  • I've never heard this sung before. I love it.

  • Do the Dubliners still perform -- any whre ?

  • They do. They are in the netherlands now.

  • Now that is good news !

  • Great song!

Who is the dude on the right, next to Barney?

  • On the right of Barney on the fiddle is John sheanon. Left is Jim Mcainn.

  • I'm going to see them again in october. Hopefully Barney will sing some beautiful songs again! :D

  • Is he really singing in the beginning 'Shut up now, I'm singing'? I actually think so! :D

    Barney McKenna is a hero.

  • yes that`s what he said

  • Dandy. Just dandy.

  • Never mind the Pogues, here come The Dubliners singing this song the way it should be!

  • YEOOOOOOOOOOOOO giver b'ys giver

  • the deep bass voice belongs to ronnie drew, the king of ireland...R.I.P

  • deadly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow!

  • Darnit, I wish I was Irish.

  • You don't have to either be Irish or any other Nationality to like the music. MUSIC that's the ticket !

  • Keep on singin' Barney! Keep it goin another couple decades!

  • I love it that when Barney speaks he sounds like his voice is nearly spent, but when he sings he can belt the tunes out at full blast like he is a still a young man. What a legend!

  • What DVD is this and can I find it in the States?

  • 40 years anniversary of the Dubliners.

  • Love it. Love South Australia

  • the one and only Barney Mckenna

  • Salute !

  • Such an amazing song, I remember hearing people sing it at a party, sounded horrible but it was so fun helping with the chorus......

  • Awesome version!

    T.A.L.

  • Great, very stirring, specially like the new bits these blokes threw in, added some character...

.shame bout the audience though, stamp those feet, clap those hands, join in at the chorus, it easy to pick up, it is a shanty after all

  • this is about the best 'doing' of it I've heard - it'd be about how it sounded in the Roaring Days
