This aria is rather like the arias in Lucia. The original is too high for most singers so it's commonly lowered a whole step. Then those who have really good high notes can add a high G. The first bass I know of who did this was Adamo Didur. Lately Sam Ramey has adopted this practice.

There are very few basses that are really able to take the high note at the end. Paata is among them.
