  • Few Americans know of the CIA's terrorist activities in North Vietnam from 1954-1965 and how that galvanized the North to be ruthless and brutal in fighting this war. CIA's Edward Landsdale created terror by spreading false rumors about the communists executing Christians which caused a mass exodus of almost 1 million North Vietnamese to the South in 1954. Armed, trained 40,000 Hmong tribesmen to resist Ho Chi Minh's govt, blowing up railroads and bridges, assassinating govt officials.

  • I'm glad I already knew about, and had seen the documentation of the Mai Lai massacre... because I'm having a pretty nice weekend.

  • What program does he use?

  • This video is my history homework... sit back, listen and eat.

  • your videos saved my ass (: I had to do reports for school due the next day i was looking into wars and these videos are the easiest to understand. Thank you

  • Wait Wait Wait anyone notice anything similar here? Isn't this the same shit happening in the Middle East Right Now?

  • @LalallaSN its the same shit that happened in the Philippine-US War of 1899-1902...Filipinos declared independence 1896 then US promised to help them if they helped US defeat the Spanish but after the Spanish were defeated, US reneged and invaded the Philippines. They used water torture which is the same used in Guantanamo, Bagram airbase and Abu Ghraib. Hamletting in Vietnam was developed in Ph-US War. Balingaga massacre preceded My Lai by 70 years.

  • This is why we need wikileaks and why SOPA is so horrible.

  • you should be my history teacher instead of the bitch of a lady i have now!!!!!!!! if you were my teacher i would not mind going to class!!!

  • Mostly accurate, however it was not the Viet Cong that orchestrated the Tet Offensive rather the NVA with the help of the NLF (Viet Cong). This is a large misconception occurring in the understanding of the Vietnam War, the NVA were from Northern Vietnam and were the main "enemies", while Southern Vietnam was the democratic American backed country that had rebel groups throughout the region who were the NLF, or as the Americans called them the Viet Cong.

  • The Point is ?, That we should fight WARS that only need to be fought, Who is going to say that around the world, It's like watching Plane's train's and automobiles, re: pulling at the Heart Strings etc.

  • I think the drafting of people for nam created alot of anger and hatred. Drafting people is basically how they supoprted this war. IF you were forced to do somethign against your will even if you were paid for it would you care about what you were told. I bet you not one of the people who were drafted had any kind care. Drafting people fills them with bitter hatred and seeking revenge. SOme of those drafted most likely took out their anger on anybody or anything

  • AWESOME DOCUMENTARY !!! THUMBS UP IF YOU LIKED IT !!!

  • He forgot to add. After the USA left. Their ally Hmong, were massacre and hunted down. There are so many untold and unwritten history.

  • Really good and clear. I lived through it and this helped me put it in context and understand where things I heard about fit. Excellent work.

    Billy G

  • i saw this video in school. and his voice is so awsome that i searched it when i got home

  • Khan, can you make the video about WWI and WWII please. I learned it from high school and now almost forgot everything.

  • Infact*

  • Really really helpful iv researched so much about this damn war and in all the txt books and Internet pages nearly non of this information was there!!!! And btw after coming back from 2 months in Laos it's pronounced Lao not Laos infect if you go to Laos and call it Laos it's considered an insult by the locals!

  • "Every unit of brigade size has its My Lai hidden someplace," Col. Henderson, they just didn't have brave whistleblowers like Ron Ridenhour. KHAN, if you think My Lai was the worst you haven't heard of Operation Phoenix and the pure torture that was commonplace. Plus some SIX MILLION Indonchinese died in the war, but no one was around to photograph the aftermath of those burned and half-burned bodies left behind.

  • could anyone tell me what program he's using to build such an amazing video time line? Cheers

  • @Fangen88 Smoothdraw. It's like Paint, but better. It's a free program too.

What he does is he uses the bucket to paint the screen black. Then he gets pictures from Google Images. And he uses I think a Wacom Tablet or some type of tablet to write.

Using the simplest of tools and technology to provide education to all. It's quite a masterpiece.

  • u know since the french occupy vietnam technology was able to growth since, but after they left ehh it all went down hill, and to this day they still use some of those french stuff....and the economy hasn't been growth either.

  • THIS IS RALPH EPPERSON, the producer of VIETNAM: AMERIA;S BETRAYAL AND TREASON. May i suggest that you watch this 4 hour dvd for: 1. THE US PLANNED THE WAR IN 1945; 2. THE U S DIDNT WANT TO WIN IT; 3. THE US SUPPLIED RUSSIA WITH WAR MAKING TECHNOLOGY to kill Americans; 4. THE ANTI WAR PROTESTORS WERE CREATED BY THE U S .... to prolong the war; and 5. THREE AMERICAN PATRIOTS, not in the govt, nor the military, FORCED NIXON TO ENE THE WAR .....years before it was planned to end. Thanks, Ralph

  • Designed a very nice car magnet for Vietnam vets. planting island dot com. God bless. Pd

  • There are those that understand Zeitgeist and those that do not. There are those that believe what comes out of the mouths of American men that work in the emergency services and there are those that do not. There are those that believe everything that the media comes up with and those that do not. The list goes on.

  • I thought it's the Vietnamese in the north and french in the south?

  • SOOOOOOO HELPFUL!!!!

  • hats off too you.. good delivery

  • You forgot Ho chi men was a ww 2 hero for USA

You forgot France was beaten by Ho chi men

USA lost the war Both at home and in Vietnam

and you forgot USA did not learn it's lesson they are now embroiled in another10,000 day war.

Communism was a boogeyman back then like Al CIA da is today

America did not learn important lessons

    1) Do not enter a war drunk on power

    2) know your enemy

  • This is the mosts confusing out of all Cold War conflicts. :(

  • this guy was on the colbert report

  • Great video. Very happy with the Tonkin explanation. McNamara said, "It was a mistake." I love your channel. You should do an Iraq war. It might piss some people off but a lot of people don't know the truth about that war. I honestly can't believe we still have troops there. I can not believe that the Bush Administration wasn't prosecuted by the Obama Administration. He could have at least exiled Bush to Switzerland.

  • It was more of the Japanese that overran the French. Remember you're talking about the Pacific Theater in WWII 0:36

  • This is way more interesting then watching a documentary!

  • remind me of black ops u know, bay of pigs, vietnam war, cuban missile crisis, all inside the single player story mode..

  • Ugh I keep making typos

  • I meant to type vids mot bids

  • It would be cool if you did some bids on electronics

  • i have finals coming up for my ap history class and this helps like you wouldn't believe, not to mention the other videos that help me out in other subjects!! thanks

  • Please redo your video. Thanks.

  • @davecung Why should he redo the video? There is nothing wrong with it.

  • During World War II Ho Chi Minh helped to rescue downed American pilots and gathered intelligence on the Japanese for the American OSS. Ho worked closely with the American intelligence community during WWII and his views were well known to them. They knew that his primary concern was Vietnamese independence.

  • In 1963, Hồ corresponded with South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem in the hope of achieving a negotiated peace.[35] This correspondence was a factor in the U.S. decision to tacitly support a coup against Diem later that year.[35]

  • In 1987, UNESCO officially recommended to member states that they "join in the commemoration of the centenary of the birth of President Hồ Chí Minh by organizing various events as a tribute to his memory", considering "the important and many-sided contribution of President Ho Chi Minh in the fields of culture, education and the arts" and that Hồ Chí Minh "devoted his whole life to the national liberation of the Vietnamese people, contributing to the common struggle of peoples for peace, ......

  • Throughout the 1940s Ho Chi Minh and other Vietnamese leaders made repeated appeals to Truman and other American officials to help them gain independence from French colonial rule. These appeals were generally ignored.

  • The result of the election was 98.2% for Diem. Diem's American advisors told him to change the vote count and release a number no larger then 70% or else the vote would not be believable. As one of his first acts of non-cooperation he refused and claimed a 98.2% victory. The world immediately knew that the election had been rigged and his authority was undermined.

  • Voters complained that they were told who to vote for, to vote for Diem, some of those that did not were beaten by CIA supported Vietnamese forces.

  • Most Dangerous Man

    Please search for that.

  • LBJ Admits Murder of Diem

  • We ask what has been graciously granted to the Philippines. Like the Philippines our goal is full independence and full cooperation with the UNITED STATES. We will do our best to make this independence and cooperation profitable to the whole world. I am dear Mr. PRESIDENT, Respectfully Yours, Ho Chi Minh

  • On February 16th, 1945 Ho Chi Minh wrote a letter to President Truman asking for American assistance in gaining Vietnamese freedom. The letter closed with the remarks: The letter was not declassified until 1972

  • Due to the fact that Ho had tried every conceivable way to cooperate with both the French and Americans in gaining Vietnamese independence, and all of those efforts had been fruitless, Ho turned to the Communists for help.

  • The US generally took an approach of non-involvement in the issue of Vietnamese and French conflict, and in doing so supported French colonialism. America became less and less inclined to support Ho Chi Min due to his Communist affiliation yet at the same time American analysts could not draw any link between Ho Chi Minh and Moscow, writing that Ho Chi Minh did not seem to be following any directive from Moscow and that the policies of Ho Chi Minh did not correlate with Russian policy.

  • “The last time the Chinese came, they stayed a thousand years. The French are foreigners. They are weak. Colonialism is dying. The white man is finished in Asia. But if the Chinese stay now, they will never go. As for me, I prefer to sniff French shit for five years than to eat Chinese shit for the rest of my life.”—Hồ Chí Minh, 1946[24]

  • In 2005, an internal National Security Agency historical study was declassified; it concluded[7] that the Maddox had engaged the North Vietnamese Navy on August 2, but that there may not have been any North Vietnamese Naval vessels present during the incident of August 4.

  • "We of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations who participated in the decisions on Vietnam acted according to what we thought were the principles and traditions of this nation. We made our decisions in light of those values. Yet we were wrong, terribly wrong. We owe it to future generations to explain why."

  • Hello Sal,

You deleted all my comments and reference. Again, this is incorrect. Please redo this video. Thank you for all the other video.

  • Hi, Sal. Can I request? Can you make a long video or combine multiple videos to one and arrange mutually exclusive timelines paralleled so we get to understand the whole world history in just one video? Because some of the incidents would be connected to each other and it is difficult already to align your history videos and mentally connect the dots. It would make things a lot easier for us or at least for me If I am not being too selfish, Thank you! And please keep uploading your videos......!

  • @mdadnan Hi, my english is not good, but if i understand your comment, then go to google and look for khan academy, in his website, there is a really organized system, i think that you and other ppl most check thatout

  • AP TEST TOMORROW BABY

  • AP TEST TOMORROW BABY

  • Thank you Sal, you uploading these videos right as I am learning it in school. It is great reinforcement.

  • u make my summer more fun when there's nothing else to do. its like watching the discovery channel

  • Nguyen Van Thieu got to live until he was 78? WOW!

  • Okay, I started watching your math videos, specifically linear algebra and having branched out through your videos I was wondering what it is you do? You seem to have a highly diversified knowledge base.

  • 6 people that I know that were into LAND REFORM were the Gracchi brothers in ancient Rome, Napoleon, Mao Tse Tung, Ho Chj Min, Fidel Castro, and Colonel Gaddafi. Some lost and some won, but always at a great price. The Vietnam War had a battle before the Yanks came in called the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. The Whiteys got trounced by the Japs in WW2. The author has a scripted version of history as per typical US indoctrination. Read more books to get out of this infant mode. Same goes for Cuba.

  • @rodrickau This is nonetheless important. Popular history helps us see what people from a certain country tend to think about a situation. Watching this we get to know what US Americans think of when they think of Cuban Crisis and Vietnam war. Of course you're right, next up one should look at popular history from Cuba and Vietnam about this event and then finally, to know what actually happened look at primary or secondary academic sources. But it's a bit hard for a mathematician to do

  • cliff note version:

chinky created gunpowder...Whitey/Honkey created bullets...Whitey took bullets and Smallpox and murdered everybody... the people who survive smallpox-- whitey patronize them by spreading religion

  • @brownale66pack Well, Schwarz also invented gun powder: Independent from the Chinese. Anyway, both, the Europeans and the Asians figured out how to make firearms as well as fireworks. Genocide was also commited by a many people. "White people" weren't aren't the only ones.

  • I've been at the DMZ in central Vietnam last years. Not the happiest day of my life.

You forgot to mention the horrible consequences of the chemical weapons the US used; ie Agent Orange.

Also, in the first Indochinese war, the French attempted a surprise attack on North-East Vietnam from Laos. But Ho Chi Mins army saw it coming, quickly supplied the north and counter-ambushed the French battalion at Bien Dien Phu.

That blow made France give up and lead to the end of the first war.

  • What about the Hmong people?

  • "he wasn't a big fan of elections and noncorrupt government and things like that..."

    hahahahahahahahahaha

Oh dear, If only all history lectures were this fun

  • From 1965 to 1975 america lost 58,000 soldiers fighting the vietnamese, but during those same 10 years 200,000 americans were murdered by their fellow americans in the united states. where is there a wall for them ??? furthermore, from 1975 till today an additional 750,000 americans have been murdered by there fellow americans and the killing still goes on every day. Maybe you should make a video about that Sal.....

  • Bad copy, but I love the fact khan does history.

When you find out what is wrong with this copy,

    I'll be back.

  • i have been kahned today

  • You should generalize all of European history before the AP exam on the 6th of May! :)

  • I always wanted to know a clear an concise telling of the Vietnam War and its origin! Thank you so much! This was very helpful.

  • well i wouldnt say the worst chapter and the only massacra, You got the wounded knee massacra and countless others war crimes commited by our country. Good guys and bad guys exist only in comic books in the real world it is a fantasy and in my opinion if you want to put labels on things i say the bad people of this world are the ones who true hardly belive that were the good guys and think the world is build up of good guys and bad guys. They are danger to the dream we strive to made july 4,1776

  • you should try and include more figures in the video, that way you get a strong feeling of the reality of the war, like how in the operation "rolling thunder" the US used more bombs on Vietnam then they did in WW2. For the Tet offensive, "36 of the 44 provincial capitals, and 64 of the 242 district towns" and that is in reference to the Viet Cong . Just a suggestion for improving on the already amazing videos you make! Keep up the good work! :)

  • running out of physics and math videos?

  • @dannyboy12357 His history videos are more interesting.

  • Korea next? that war always baffled me.. anyway thanks for your videos!

  • Thank you, Kahn. To many people, this subject is still taboo.

  • The Nixon recordings are particularly bad, with him specifically calling for bombing raids on villages .

  • Comment removed

  • okay how do you know so much about almost every subject?

  • @floyd617 aliens

  • Oh, here is another one. Pentagon Papers/ Wikaleaks . I am convinced that self centered idiots are running this country.

  • Well that pretty much sums it up! It is absolutely incredible the similarities to the Iraq war. Iraq/Vietnam, Terrorism/Communism, Use of Depleted Uranium/ Napam, Torture/ Massacre, Lies/Lies, No clear direction/ No clear direction, Drain on economy/Drain on economy, Tonkin Bay Incident/ Weapons of Mass Destruction, innocent civilians killed/ innocent civilians killed, The Military Industrial Complex gets richer/ The Military Industrial Complex gets richer. So sad :-(

  • OMG MY TEST IS O THIS TOMMARROW! THANKS XD

  • Yet another black eye on the face of this "great" nation.

  • Now, ask yourselves......Is America really the greatest nation on Earth?

  • @SpasticatedCunt I think it'd be foolish to pay much attention by *any* nation claiming itself to be the greatest nation on earth. We should consider it arrogant rubbish in the same way we'd consider a neighbour who claims to be the greatest person on earth.

  • @SpasticatedCunt

US is not a single nation. It is a bunch of nations somehow living together.

  • @SpasticatedCunt

    absolutely NOT!

    but least worse nation nonetheless.

  • wow...thank you khanacademy.

  • One of the most vicious wars in US history with over 58,000 American soldiers dead. But you did forget one important guy; Robert McNamara.

  • i admire you men, really khan, your the most wise and the men with most knowledge i know, it is really satisfying that there are people in the world who would do what you do for all of us, if there is any web page or something from which i could donate to this academy, i will happily do so, you should be the happiest men in the world, because your transmitting knowledge for all of us, cheers

  • We actually touched on this subject today in class! It was so fascinating and I wanted to learn more, so when I saw this video show up in the subscription box I nearly fangirl squealed.

  • Wow, he's covering modern history... this is so wickedly fantastic.

  • @2ndHAC What about ancient history? It's even more fantastic!

  • @2ndHAC When I was in school, we weren't even allowed to study the Vietnam War, which they couldn't even agree was a war and called it the Vietnam Conflict.

Politicians are ridiculous. Changing a word from war to conflict isn't going to change what happened.

  • @trexx32 What are you talking about?

  • @BoornIdentity I made a comment about how wrong and the informative this video. The US also killed about 1 million Vietnamese sorry that is genocide,

  • @trexx32 No it isn't, the intentions of the American Military command was not to kill all of the people of North Vietnam, had they wanted to they could have. Genocide has to do with intentions not numbers.

  • @trexx32 I agree, but when you look at the amount of deaths suffered on the American side?

  • @trexx32 We haven't removed any comments. They might have been made on a previous version of this video that has been removed. We only remove comments if they involve offensive language.

  • @khanacademy Can you make a video on communism?

  • @khanacademy We? Who's we?

  • Awesome, glad history is getting tackled. Hope the statistics videos follow too!

  • Comment removed

  • @Smielle1

How about you make a real argument before petting your own ego.

  • @Smielle1 He called it a shady era of American history and called it an atrocity, in what way did he pet the American ego?

  • Why did you remove the first one?

  • Was Ho Chi Minh a true communist who meant good?

Or was more like the Soviet communist who used communism as a front of fascism?

  • Recap. Thank you.

  • Lol North Korea and North Vietnam

What part of the world will you do next Sal?

Can you go east? Talk about History in Japan, China, and India, they have a huge amount of history

  • @rinwhr I think he's going to do those which are relevant to US history first. Maybe Japan is next. :)
