Ah, this is when Arcades were fun. Narc, Golden Axe, Street Fighter 2, Samurai Showdown...great times.  I personally love how the jeeps in this game have the old-timey "Aooogaah!" horns. Very courteous of the baddies to warn the player of their approach I must say.

I started playing video games in the 70's and played them every weekend into the late 90's. Total carnage was a brilliant,fun,exciting,and wonderful game to play and I consider it one of the best designed and best sounding games of all time. Unlike most games where you get bored after you play it a few times this one is never boring or predictable. The imagination that went into this game is nothing short of genius.

I've always loved how shooting out Orcus' eyes resulted in a fountain of blood and eyeballs streaming from the sockets. "MY EYE!" lol

Taking Orcus apart piece by piece is worth the sound and visuals alone. Total Carnage is one of the funnest (and most challenging) I've EVER played.

BTW: What system did you play on this? You seemed to move around a bit...stiff (i. e. you could move alright, but took you a second or two to actually aim and shoot). I have this on the Midway Arcade Classics Vol. 2, and dual sticking it is awesome.

You wanna know why it's hard? Because Total Carnage is basically a parody of Smash T.v. Why is it a parody? 1.) You need 200 or 220 keys to access the Pleasure Dome. 2.) A lot of annoying text (especially near the end). 3.) The game calls players dufuses. 4.) General Akhboob, in the endgame, usually yells "ALL THE MILK WE HAVE IS BABY MILK!" and "I'LL BUY YOU FOR A DOLLAR!"

Don't forget the "mother of all bosses", Orcus, whose behavior (especially the first form where he shoots constantly like he was Rambo) seems like a parody. Although if you ask me, Scarface would kick Orcus's ass.

Ah, yes... Orcus seemed to be the "mother of all bosses"... until the end of the game. (Oh, and, believe it or not, Orcus, according to Midway, was a sort of combination of Mutoid Man and Scarface, the first two bosses from Smash TV.)
