  • Why does she say 'there are 2 letters' c and h' instead of 'there are 2 sounds (and reinforce the sounds) Children dont need to know the labels for the sounds at this stage. Having to also know letter names makes it harder for kids with poor phonemic awareness. If teaching letter names in EY this isnt compatible with Letters and Sounds (UK) If in doubt ask Debbie Hepplewhite or Ruth Miskin. Letter names can confuse the 20 - 30% of children with poor auditory discrimination & arent needed here.

  • @SportzKidzAU The children we used for this demo were much older; 7/8 years old so they were already very familiar with the letters and could cope with this explanation. You are certainly right that with younger children we would avoid the letter names at this early stage.
