@bustabo23 - Really? I've never heard that song. I guess I must have lifted that lick through some sort of psychic ability. It's just a funk blues in D... but I'll check out Alain's thing to see if I really did steal it.
@BassGuitarMag yeah its not the same, since Alain plays it much more faster, but i thought you were doing it slowly to show better the slap sound, couse the fast stuff sometimes looses the pure sound, couse of all the percusive sounds. I guess amazing bass players share a consciousness then. Nice reviews btw, a hug from Argentina.
@riccaliolio - Don't try to stick your entire finger in between the strings for popping. And keep your thumb as parallel to the string as you can for slapping to avoid hitting the wrong string. Or... get a bass with wider spacing.
Hi Ed, i have a big important question, can the aguilar obp3 be installed in any bass? I'm getting my custom bass with EMG pickups, and i was wondering if i can add a aguilar preamp?
@XaviOrtega1 - Theoretically, but it depends on the bass. If your bass is being made custom, tell the guy to make sure the control cavity is big enough.
Hey man, I dig and love your reviews on everything, but I am curious if you will do a review on the Ibanez SR Prestige SR5005E? I CANNOT find that bass In Austin, San Antonio, or Houston area here in TX.
@Metal626 - It could happen. I'm interested in that bass, but it depends on my assignments. I write for Bass Player mag now, and they are not hiring me to do video at this point, just writing assignments. But if Ibanez wants me to do a review... I'm down for that!
@BassGuitarMag Speaking of high(er)-end Ibanez basses, I would kill someone if it would put an Ed Friedland review of the SR1205 Premium into existence...it seems like GC is taking forever to get any of them....Is there anyone you need me to "take out", Ed?
My first bass was an Ibanez bass, and I have to say they really are fantastic for the price you pay for them. This bass however, I'm amazed how clear cut everything sounds, love that the upper register notes still sound like it's coming from a bass, and not to mention that the bass looks very nice! Great demo as always Ed!
All your videos make me want a Genz-Benz stack so bad.
I play Pop Punk (But other genres as well so don't bitch, people), and I wonder if it'll get me...pretty any tone? Watching your videos, it sure seems like it.
@nolliefIip - I like the Shuttle 6.0, Streamliner 900, Shuttle Maz 9.2, that's what I use depending on the gig. There are other good amps out there too. I like the TC Electronics stuff too.
That piece of wenge adds a lot of mid growl, very nice indeed. Plus the good quality alder & maple, nice bass over all. I don't like the bridge and the narrow spacing. I had a BTB 1305 with the same bridge and the sound seems slim and tiny. Much better are the single saddle bridges from BTB 6xx and BTB 7xx series, the string goes deeper in the saddle, under the body surface. Adds a little tension and clarity, better mids, IMHO
it would be great if you could show a bass guitar with bartolini clasic bass series, with single/serie/parallel switches, I´ll buy a medium quality ibanez and i´m wondering in upgrade the pick ups with US classic serie bartolinis and aguilar obp-3 but I haven´t desided yet. sorry about my bad english
hey ed! i've always wondered this. what do you think of Rickenbackers? i know that you prolly wont be able to get one to review given there are really only two kinds out there right now. still i respect what your opinion alot and would like to know what you think! thanks :D
@henry12350 - I like Rics, classic tone and look. They are well made US instruments, and yes, most likely I will not get to review one. They sell every bass they make, they don't seem to be in need of promotion.
@BassGuitarMag The K5, when tuned to standard is actually REALLY smooth! Its designed to have very few mids (but its very versatile, as you can dial almost all of them out, but the pre-amp is fantastic!) Great smooth jazzy sound, really lightweight and it has a great neck! (Its smaller than a normal SGDR and they are LIGHT anyway!) :) These are almost custom basses pretty much! And its not as bad as Tom Araya ESP shop one! Its like 4 to 5K for nothing more than his LTD one!
I´m making my own fretless bass, but I still can´t decide wich pickups will fit better.I´m looking for a warm vintage tone,In fact I want it to sound as near as possible to an upright, but I also want good response with the harmonics. So what do you recomend?,sinlges, humbuckers, active or passive?,Duncan,DiMarzio,or EMG?.
Speaking of reviewing Ibanez again. How about the new ATK1200 prestige or even the high end grooveline? As always Ed, you give great review, keep up the good work! In the future it would be nice to see some Orange Amps too.
You could almost call this a review of the Aguilar OBP-3 as well - I have them in my 4 Spectors, and they're absolutely killer preamps! Great review of the electronics... and the bass it's attached to! :D
@pleximanic - Actually, I originally wanted to review the Willis bass, but Ibanez asked if I would do the Veasley instead since it was newer. I will ask for the Willis the next time I get to review an Ibanez.
Hi Ed, long time ago you mentioned that you were going to do a review on a Fender Steve Harris P Bass, are you still planing to do it ?. Great Work, Amazing Videos !!!
The price tag is spot on. Remember this is a SIGNATURE bass. Sure you can pop out a Fodera or Tobias bass for that price, but this is Ibanez and this is what Gerald Veasley sounds like not Victor Wooten. There is a difference of course, but you gotta admit this is one heavy gun of a bass. And Ed makes it even more amazing.
I got an idea for a video I'd love to see. Just going throught different strings (roundwound vs flatwound) what's better for pick style, slap style, finger style, what's better for p-basses and jazz basses etc.
@MrTheguyofbigbite - Good idea, very labor intensive. And then, there's the big question... who pays me to do it? I did do a pretty extensive review of all the different DR strings with sound samples.... it's up at the Bass Emporium website. Go to bassemporium (dot) com, look under resources, then newsletters, scroll down the page and you'll find it.
@BassGuitarMag Yes, I've seen that article when on the quest for my ideal strings, I love EBMM Slinkies but they just go dead too fast, I want something with a good bottom and aggressive snappy tone, and some good low mids. I tried the Nickel Lo Riders, but I think I'm going to give the Fat Beams a try. I'm playing on an EBMM Bongo 6 HH, so strings ain't cheap!
@tylerwylie - Have you tried the Stainless Lo Riders? I just put a set on my Smith 6, and they are working out great. I would think they might be a better fit for your Bongo than the Fat Beams... hex core vs. round core... 34" scale bolt on neck.... probably benefit from a tighter feel than the Fat Beams. Just my opinion.
The price point seems really high indeed, it still to me seems to sound no different from the SR 506 I had many years ago. They should have priced it slightly above the prestige series imo. you can get many a nice hand crafted bass made here in the US for that price...... I find that very strange.
@dTbFan72 - Lots of influences. Jaco, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, Jerry Jemmott, Chuck Rainey, James Jamerson, George Porter, Willie Weeks, Jack Casady, Michael Manring, Alain Caron..... and that's just electric bass players that come to mind.
Favorite band? Steely Dan, The Meters.... Bill Evans Trio, Weather Report.... and many more.
Ok, may this one is made out of "special" ingrediences, but for 5000 Bucks I could buy a professional Set including an American Special and some Ampeg Amplification witch would blast the sh*t out of your face! And also Soundgear 6-Strings may sound very similar to this thing.
Five thousand dollars for an Ibanez six string with narrow string spacing? That'll be the day. Tone sounds very uninspiring (though Ed's playing is great as always). Looks very much like a typical Ibanez. I'd buy a a Roscoe SKB6 and a Lull M5V and still have enough money left over to take my wife ouf for Valentine's Day.
Beautiful instrument, saw the YT vid with Gerald and Ibanez working it out. Nice bass, but there's so many equally great instruments for far less, a person would really have to want Gerald's bass, or have money to burn of course.
great bass it sounds awesome, ed i have a question about your right hand and the angle you have your wrist bent at. Ive read a few things about having it not bent but yet i see everybody doing it, what would be your opinion as a teacher?
sounds nice, but a "cheap" Ibanez is plenty awesome. I think one solid hunk of brass is a better idea for bridge resonance. also my engineer is totally over active electronics, which he says are all inherently noisy. I like the neck reinforcing aspect of the wood, I have a 5 and a 6 string Ibanez, my 5's neck is bowing a little. this does sound a little cleaner than my Ibanez 6 in the upper register.
@MobiusBandwidth The "hunk" bridge design is to improve resonance of the strings into the body, indivdual string saddles reduce sympathetic vibration (when one note causes teh same note in octaves to sound, on some basses it can be a serious issue, but most of the time it just adds a tiny but of "mud") These saddles run into the body so provide just as much sustain and resonance but less sypathetic vibrations. for $5k Ibanez did think things through!
Nice review, and nice bass. Signature models are always that expensive, IMHO it's nonsense. For 5k I could get a top notch luthier bass built on my very own specifics. Well, people are free to spend their money their way.
@12matty31 But its not just about tone! I mean this thing has an INSANELY slick neck(with custom neck profile), and 14mm string spacing, a custom finish, hand built, and the pickups are custom "voiced" (like custom output and exact number of winds etc, though its meant to sound like an SR) As well as the features Ed mentions! The neck is as thin as the JEM guitar, and the Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp combined with all those figures shows why its a custom! Though $5K i'm still not totally sure...
5k wow! I like the fact that it's an Ibanez, it has somewhat of a "sleeper" look. People wouldn't know that it's a top notch bass. It is kinda humbling. If I had 5k to spend on a bass I wouldn't buy it. Just because it's not my style, but if someone gives me one, I sure as heck would treasure it.
Now the true test! side by side comparison to a higher end regular SR Ibanez bass? SR706? I'm curious how much of a difference it is in sound.
I refuse to pay $5000 for an instrument. I love the sound on this thing, but the price is one of those "we're a famous company making something for a famous person!" statements. I hate that. Gibson and Fender do this all the time.
@R0ma1n maybe..maybe not lol. most likely not. i prefer luthiers because they can give you exactly what you want. granted that is a bit hypocritical coming from a guy who has a fender j bass, but i am trying to get a custom bass....when i get like 2 grand on me lol
5k sounds fair for something built by master luthiers. Just because it has an Ibanez name doesn't make it inferior to other basses made to similar level of craftsmanship.
The value is up the player in the end, but i get the impression many players are brand conscious for the wrong reasons.
Wow, those chords really sing. 5 grand is a lot for a bass but this looks to be extremely well built with great features. Tone is not my style but it sounds killer for what it is. Seems like it get be a seriously versatile bass.
Great looking, fantastic sounding bass. I have no doubt in my mind that the construction is top notch, but for 5 grand I think I'd rather have a bass custom built to MY specifications instead of someone elses.
$5000? Seriously? you could get a Warwick Corvette Standard 6 for more than half the price and double the quality, with better woods, pickups, and overall playability. You'd be an idiot to choose this thing over a Warwick
@JohnMichaelEllison That's all subjective. I could list 10 basses that I think are better than the Warwick...never ends. Everyone has their own cup of tea.
The tone is incredible!!!!

@Domenix71 yeah, i have the SR705 and they sound pretty much the same in my opinion
12matty31 1 year ago 2
@12matty31 But its not just about tone! I mean this thing has an INSANELY slick neck(with custom neck profile), and 14mm string spacing, a custom finish, hand built, and the pickups are custom "voiced" (like custom output and exact number of winds etc, though its meant to sound like an SR) As well as the features Ed mentions! The neck is as thin as the JEM guitar, and the Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp combined with all those figures shows why its a custom! Though $5K i'm still not totally sure...

if someone has 5k for that bass...why not a Modulus....or Warwick...or two Spectors....yeah two, but still nice bass but...god...5k...

Nice bass but I'd rather get a Zon for that price.

So when are you reviewing a legendary wal bass?
Oreomeister 1 year ago

If I spend 5 thousand on something, I wanna be able to drive it.

I' d like to see how narrow the string spacings are in person. Sounds great and makes me wanna get own a 6 stringer again.

I refuse to pay $5000 for an instrument. I love the sound on this thing, but the price is one of those "we're a famous company making something for a famous person!" statements. I hate that. Gibson and Fender do this all the time.
zekuhryuh 1 year ago
I could have a custom bass built to the exact same specs with just as high quality for half the price. It sounds great but the price is ludicrous.
mattlittlej 1 year ago
this thing sounds AMAZING! i just wish they made a 5 string version lol
DMBassNVox 1 year ago
@DMBassNVox would you buy it if they did? yeah.. hehehe
R0ma1n 1 year ago
@R0ma1n maybe..maybe not lol. most likely not. i prefer luthiers because they can give you exactly what you want. granted that is a bit hypocritical coming from a guy who has a fender j bass, but i am trying to get a custom bass....when i get like 2 grand on me lol
DMBassNVox 1 year ago
5k sounds fair for something built by master luthiers. Just because it has an Ibanez name doesn't make it inferior to other basses made to similar level of craftsmanship.
The value is up the player in the end, but i get the impression many players are brand conscious for the wrong reasons.

this pretty much sums up what a 6 string should be (in my opinion)
will have to get a second job!

Ouch. 5k? Hmmm. Yea, that is up in Sadowsky 5/used Fodera/Zon 5 territory. Sounds nice on the chords though but still...

Are you reviewing FX pedals again anytime soon, Ed?

I respect this instrument. But i don't like it. Give me a Fender P or a J!

Great looking/sounding/probably feeling bass.
Worth 5000? Absolutely not.
jonjonjonmw3 1 year ago
Wow, those chords really sing. 5 grand is a lot for a bass but this looks to be extremely well built with great features. Tone is not my style but it sounds killer for what it is. Seems like it get be a seriously versatile bass.

Great looking, fantastic sounding bass. I have no doubt in my mind that the construction is top notch, but for 5 grand I think I'd rather have a bass custom built to MY specifications instead of someone elses.
jpuckett1989 1 year ago 2
sadly, this doesn't look like a 5000$ bass. You can choose between a new MTD and an Ibanez??? lol...
flipper2gv 1 year ago
$5000? Seriously? you could get a Warwick Corvette Standard 6 for more than half the price and double the quality, with better woods, pickups, and overall playability. You'd be an idiot to choose this thing over a Warwick
JohnMichaelEllison 1 year ago
@JohnMichaelEllison That's all subjective. I could list 10 basses that I think are better than the Warwick...never ends. Everyone has their own cup of tea.

i really like the sound of ibanez basses, particularly the soundgear series.
but i just cant get over how they look. the finishes and overall design just look so blech to me.
