I could care less if he misses a note here or if a string rings out of place or buzzes there. This guy plays with soul and that's so hard to do! Look what he's doing on that little overdriven parlor guitar! It looks like he has a conventional humbucker mounted between the sound hole and the bridge?? Just supressing the feedback on that thing is a feat in and of itself. Original? Absolutely!
One of the best performances of ANYTHING i've EVER seen! Aaron is EXACTLY what this competition, the blues and music in general is all about. What is the most amazing to me is how he takes you back to where it all started and also keeps it 100% modern, fresh and relevant and the same time. This is one for the history books!!!
Blues is about tone. The languaje of the blues is not extremely complicated, it doesnt matter if talks much or the speech is shor; you dont need too much notes, as clearly as the blues masters told us long ago. It doesnt matter about the speed either, what sets one player apart from the other and gives him/her identity, and takes him/her to the heaven of greats is tone, tone is sound, sound is your voice, and that is what moves and makes the listeners feel the soul of the talker, the player.
sometimes i wish our right to free speech was taken away from most of you ! the fucking guy is playin man ....if you people had an ounce of balls i'd like to see you do better instead you 'shred' in moms basement ....your awesome aren't you ?
nice. While he is a little sloppy we must all remember that the blues originated from guys who weren't the most technically sound and had slop which was a distinguishing feature. Hey when you're pounding out raw emotion into a guitar that kinda thing's bound to happen =P love the soul and groove this guy has! good shit
THIS is his winning performance? I'm not gonna be a queer and dislike the video, but I'm gonna tell you that this isn't a winning performance. Not by a long shot.
@2Fast4U0921 K.O.B is all about originality in the blues, not pure duplication. If someone went up and ripped srv for five minutes, it might be "good", but not original. anyone can take fifteen years of their to dedicate to learning something that's ALREADY BEEN DONE BEFORE. this guy, on the other hand, can fucking rip
@ozzy4pres Still playing... all over Texas, the US & outside of the country. His music is what makes him who he is! I just saw him with a band called 11th Hour on S Padre Island, TX this past week. He is by far one of the most talented musicians & song writers that I've ever known.
His biggest mistake... and it's a mistake that even professionals continue to make: WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH THE PLUG IN ACOUSTIC. And I'm referring to the second acoustic he used. If you want an acoustic to sound like one.. Mic it. Bottom line... or maybe the most expensive plug in unit designed by NASA might help, but otherwise, I microphone is such a good solution. The only solution.
yes.. open minor tuning at first.. then open major tuning for the last bit.. usual practice when playing slide as you cant make your usual triads with a little metal stick
This guy Aaron displays every skill to make that PHAT PHAT sound... playing double notes, bends, overdrive cranked without feedback on that hollow acoustic, I assume complex harmonic acoustic steel strings on a short scale - which he plays hard and still keeps in tune. He uses a ton of musical and visual hooks in his piece to always have something going to stir interest. Well done.
come on are you crazy here people? he is AMATEUR and as tone like THAT.... cutting knife through fat fat butter... I know several 8 hour a day practicing proffessionals who will never get tone anywhere near this guy has. this guy is genius and natural talent, you can allways argue on what one likes the best, but he definately stands up for the title he got.
@BiggDickJohnson Music is subjective thing, for example i dont like Joe Bonamassa tone (too much gadgets in signal chain, I am sure for me he would sound with simple guitar>amp rig better). but in no means i can say that he is not a world class musician :) So everything in music is a matter of personal preference.
Why bother? Because thats what he likes to play! Why'd he win? He's damn good! What's the point on playing an acoustic guitar if you're using distortion? BECAUSE YOU CAN! Fuck jealous douchebags forever.
I get that it's really hard to play like this on acoustic, but what I don't get is really, why bother? I don't know how he would have fared playing an electric. Cool sound, but strange in a live setting, but it might have given him an advantage on the acoustic portion, since that's what he plays. I did like the acoustic part though.
Why use an acoustic? It's all about the feel. The fretboard, the greater resistance of the strings, different resonance etc. All together it's a much more earthy feel. Plus he probably tricked that thing out himself. There's something about customized, unique equipment that adds to the experience too. He used it expertly. He's into the music like no one I've ever seen. Go watch Jack White play with a soda bottle, electricity, a block of wood and guitar strings and then tell me there's no point.
Well if you knew anything about the history of blues, it all began on acoustic. Robert Johnson and the gang would wet themselves if they saw this guy's talent back in the day.
It takes a lot more talent to play blues like this on an acoustic, hate to break it to you people hating on this guy. This is a lot more impressive to me than playing on a Strat and what not.
Well im not keen on the tone... but the hollow body of the guitar (think semi hollow guitars!!) would add a lot of body to the sound so there is a point...
When I first saw this I didn't like the overdriven acoustic but now I love it. I don't know if it's just an acquired taste or what but I think it's cool. It's different and unique props.
Hey man... SUPER cool playing lead on acoustic... It really gives you a unique tone for KOTB... and awesome playing! My name is Stëv Skye and I made it through the KOTB first round at the Phoenix, AZ store :) I actually posted the performance (my first youtube post)... Im gonna post the 9/10/09 performance as well... Thanks for sharing. Peace!
i will say he won because he did something different than all the others. they all sounded the same.,,,,aaron if you read this, did you play differnt songs as you progressed through the finals??

Well then come and show me something. Your all talk. You sign up for the KOB just like me and then you can show us kids. The first preliminary is on the 20th here in jacksonville. It doesnt matter what your playin or if its penatonic scales or not. All that matters is that its the blues and its better than the rest;)
haha go ahead and do a pentatonic solo in the key of E. that hasnt been done at all. i garuntee you do that and your whole preformance will be predictable. thats why aaron changed it up.
classical? its just an old electric acoustic steel string model(looks like a harmony) you sir destroyed your own argument before you made it. the blues came from bars feilds and street corners IN missisippi. Robert johnson Son House now those were blues guitarists and they didn't know pentatonic
Well, we're sorry he didn't play blues like thousands of others have before him. If you're angry at him for being creative with his blues, then you have no understanding of the blues. Just playing the ROOTS isn't a homage to them. You have to make things your own to get respected.
@IamDUFF Your just an old timer who needs to get in touch with the artistic side of your brain. It allows you to FEEL music and not run a checklist on what makes the blues the blues. I don't give a fuck if a dude plays the blues with a mandolin. If he translates that feeling then he is playing the blues. Aaron Loesch is badmuthafuckinass and you can't handle it. Charlie Patton would not share the same "ideas" as you. Guaranteed.
That´s something else... 06´ contest didn´t show anything really new and I personally didn´t think the winner had the most interesting performance, specially in the acoustic guitar.
Aaron, on the other hand, was really outstanding and original! Hope that next years will bring something so interesting.
Oh.... my..... god. I would say "fake" out of pure jealousy, but the truth is that he's got the blues. I thought the first part was awesome, but the second was epic... i would love to see a professional musician try to do that with an acoustic. He definitely deserved to win this.
I also think there were way to many comments from idiots who rule on Guitar Hero, but can't play the real thing! I think PorchPickr has it right, and so does SRVandPez. Those who were hating on this clip should watch it a few times and figure out why he won with these performances. By the way Fenderstrat 57, Stevie was the best, but as a player myself, it's good to have Stevie as one of many influences, just not the only one. By the way, the metal heads shouldn't EVEN be commenting on this clip.
i am a metal head but i think this clips is great, so don't drop all metal heads into one bin. Blues is a great influence on my playing as well as metal
Hey! Nothing wrong with being a metal head and enjoying the blues! I am a metal head, and I'm entering this contest this year. A lot of metal is just really fast blues. And why can't we like blues and metal without people being mad that we also like metal?
I thought the guy was really good. A little sloppy at times, yes, but overall, very good. The jazzman8 seems to have forgotten that playing the blues is all about being true to the moment and playing from your heart, not from your head. When you play from your head, you lose that spark, and while jazz is very technically difficult, it is also quite boring after more than ten minutes. As for the rest of the haters, it seems you are either metal heads or you can't play at all, so learn how 2 play!
I like the silly faces he makes whilst displaying his really poor sense of time. I personally like the craptastic acoustic/electric. I'd rather listen to that than what I would expect to hear at these types of things.
How does he get that thing to sound like that, where did he put the pickup?

Charlie Patton, father of blues, wrote his most famous songs on a cotton plantation, the same one where he taught John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf.
The only reason why [delta] blues made it's way to Chicago is because World War 1 left many open jobs for blacks in major cities.
You're plenty entitled to your diggs, but i like my music as analog and natural as it gets.

i hate this guys tone it sounds like a car accident

The harmonic runs around the 5 min mark are crucial. Excellent technical creativity.

He plays loads of fun shit, consistently, seems original except for what he stole from Dicky Betts

This guy is really different, unlike all those SRV clones in the competition. He has his own sound.
The acoustic electric tone was very nasty in a cool way.
I'm gonna enter this contest just for shits and giggles.

Blues is a great influence on my playing as well as metal
jeff008thepunk 2 years ago

CahdCy75 3 years ago
GOOD jazz comes from the heart. Things can be soulful and vastly technical, just takes a fantastic player.

Ya gotta laugh at all the experts here. Really just basic psychology. You know what I mean.
PorchPickr 3 years ago
Especially when they don't even have any videos of themselves playing...

I like the silly faces he makes whilst displaying his really poor sense of time. I personally like the craptastic acoustic/electric. I'd rather listen to that than what I would expect to hear at these types of things.
