I just got Readplease, a super powerful Windows XP text to speech program, to work in Linux Mint 11 after installing the program WINE. Next I downloaded Readplease and ran the file through WINE. It installed a Readplease icon on my desktop. I dragged and dropped it onto the task bar and it launches Readplease with a single click. After experimenting I discovered if you paste and copy your data into LiberOffice Writer first that Readplease reads it perfectly.

been checking out Unity recently, it's actually not that bad, not saying I'm totally sold on it but found it easier than gnome 3 which kinda looks cool but feels a bit cumbersome when you're actually using it think you need to know the keyboard shortcuts for it to work well. Unity doesn't really seem to add anything for me but it's usable and looks ok.
Linux Action Show RIPPED apart fedora 15... heh, you may want to check it out first, perhaps sorta respond to their points directly or indirectly... cause right now my only impression of fedora 15 is from them.
@whatnameisavailablee I think that they should be more careful when they say those things... They speak like Fedora was a really crappy experience for everyone's PC's. In my case fedora works a lot better than Ubuntu for instance since I have the nouveau 3d driver fully functional I can plug in multiple monitor without restarting X, brightness keys work (not in Ubuntu here), my touchpad doesn't make X to hang (it happens sometimes with Ubuntu) and so on.
i have looked forward to a review of mint 11 :/ im using mint 10 and really think about upgrading, and then all it got was a notification :/ pinguy os is way smaller and got a whole video
@DannyOMcarvel I used it on my desktop for a while, but with my Nvidia card and the proprietary driver, there was a lot of tearing in videos and games.
"Gnome". The "g" is silent. Thumbs up if you couldn't concentrate on the video because of it. Wait, no don't, I don't wanna be a thumbs-up whore. Wait now I'm just a post-modern thumbs-up whore D: please don't thumb-up!!
@AleifrLeifrson No. The head of the Gnome foundation says it with a hard "G." GNOME means "GNU Network Object Model Environment." How do you pronounce GNU? With a hard "G."
@gsxrDoug Sadly not available on Amazon UK :-( We only get the small one. I suppose I could get one from Amazon com but then comes the UK rip off. We always pay a ridiculously higher price for things here. Often the same, or more in GBP, as in US$. There's import duty, 20% VAT etc. Even downloads cost more. When I used that other operating system I found that Norton were charging the same figure in GBP as US$ for a download. So I didn't buy it and now I'm glad I've left all that stuff behind.
I'm going to get the new Nook day one (well, July 1st since I'll be gone all month). I saw my aunt's Kindle 3, and I fell in love with how thin and light it is.
I love how the eReader market is turning out. It seems like ever since the Nook WiFi came out, Amazon and B&N were having a price war.
Hard to imagine the the first Kindle (2007) was $400. Hopefully in 2012, you could buy the best eReader for $99.
Oh god, should I update to Firefox 5? Firefox 4 works so well, and after Firefox 3 I'm deathly afraid of moving. Firefox 3 was shiiiiiiit. Made me move to Chrome.
Thank you HTC, This will definitely make me next purchase of a phone (from iPhone 4) to an Android device much smoother (I've owned the EVO, N1, and G2). GNOME 3 is running on my Fedora 15 installation.. I hope it gets better. It is definitely one step better with the extensions. As for Minecraft, I love that game, I don't know if I would buy the Pocket Edition simply because I love gaming on the PC not on consoles. The last console I bought was DS Lite(and most of my games are GBA ;D)
zenwalk is a really nice distro I find that Kde and gnome are way too heavy and getting heavier, I do have kde and gnome installed on one system but only do the bare installs such as kde-core and gnome-core and just install the things i really need.
. I am shocked of how slow some distros are especially when i leave Arch and try another distro out.
@Raffix394 I use two softbox lights. The biggest difference with this one is I didn't add any contrast in post. Ran out of time and had to leave town. Rendering it this way takes about 12 minutes, while adding contrast makes it take 45-60 minutes.
@JudgementalTaco nope, just filmed it about 6 times. The camera was acting up, my desktop was acting up, etc. So there were a LOT of different takes of the beginning.
I like the interface in Meego, it's much better than the one in Joli OS. I would probably use Meego 1.2 on my netbook if it wasn't for their broken wifi support.
@Gnomeye it's Arch with Gnome 3 in fallback mode. Since I have an Nvidia card, Gnome Shell was giving me some issues (lots of screen tearing, especially in videos and games).
One of the reasons to change to 3.0 IIRC is to change versioning scheme so that minor version become 3.x.0 and bug/security fixes become 3.x.y instead of the current 2.6.xx.y
Ahh yeah you seemed like you were in a rush lol. Now im wondering what YOU think of 2.6.40 vs 3.0 as far as the linux kernel name. Do you think it even matters? Personally I would like to see 3.0 simply because I don't think i've ever used anything but 2.6.x lol
@thisweekinlinux FYI, an official ICQ client has been for Linux lately (still beta). Maybe in the US it's not that popular, but where I live, it is. And it's kind of a scary feeling seeing this pile of junk appearing on Linux now. Year of the Linux desktop maybe?
@thetechzonelive How do you switch to Gnome 3 on 11.04? I don't like Unity at all. Especially with the Gnome Tweak Tool updating, it's way more flexible.
@CoryClaxon Lol i grabbed both 32 and 64 Bit iso's in under 10 minutes, the speed should start increasing. Download finished, probably avg. out to <1.5mbps.
To be honest, since i've already paid for the game, I feel that I should get the portable version free too. Though a couple of pounds doesn't hurt.
Also I've had problems with Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. The wireless card: Broadcom 4311 isn't working i've tried the methods on the forums and I can't understand what's the problem. Any help?
I am not updating my Droid X to Gingerbread. I don't want to loose my root access. I don't want to have to do the complicated rooting. If no z4root, I'm not interested. I don't see anything with Gingerbread worth updating for, not like with Froyo getting flash. I got Netflix working with Froyo so...
Hi... One question ... I'm Linux user since 2004, general using Gentoo on my PC and HP Laptop. I'm curious which distribution you recommend for a laptop ? :)
@Biacho85 Since you use Gentoo, I assume you're a power user and not a newbie.
So, why do you ask such a newbie question? I mean, do you mind giving some details? Laptop model, processor and graphics card etc, what desktop environment you prefer, and so on.
I mean, there are literally 100s of different linux distros out there. So it's really up to what you prefer and what your computer can process.
To myself, I would go for either LinuxMint, Pinguy or Fedora. Since I prefer Gnome 2.
@egadw Doesn't really matter if it's a second or third PC. And besides that, it's far more familiar to your average Gentoo'tard than other, more "sophisticated" distros. I'm always at loss when it comes to digging around in Ubuntu for example.
