I was in Haiti during the uprising of the food riots, what I understood was that the ports and the corruption there with extremely high custom fees etc. in exchange for "protection". Food is sitting in the ports in huge crates "rotting". One report was the Prime Minister in trying to break up the corruption in the manipulation of custome fees, was putting the pressure on and in retaliation, those controlling the ports, were holding back the food. I was in Haiti during the uprising of the food riots, what I understood was that the ports and the corruption there with extremely high custom fees etc. in exchange for "protection". Food is sitting in the ports in huge crates "rotting". One report was the Prime Minister in trying to break up the corruption in the manipulation of custome fees, was putting the pressure on and in retaliation, those controlling the ports, were holding back the food. The rice issue is just 1 example whr outside meddling has exacerbated the problems Haiti is experiencing. Outside meddling has been a problem for Haiti since 1804. The U.S. has always been trying to 'tweak' things often with unintended or perhaps intended results. It's a pity Haitian leadership couldn't edge towards a position where they could say thanks, but no thanks to the U.S.
This is situation whr a country like Venezuela mught be helpful as long as they don't start 'meddling' in turn.

Thr's no way Haiti can compete with large scale agri business even with lower wages. Economies of scale work with crops like wheat, rice, corn, etc. which are mechanized & not labour intensive. Is there no way Haiti can compete with specialty crops & market garden produce? How bout reforestation? Anyhow,the level of unskilled labour & the high illiteracy creates a real drag on the enconomy. Haitians can work hard no doubt, but in the 21st cent this is not enough, u also have to work smart.

no one is trying to dump on the U.S but it just a fact. How come a country who was self reliant all the way till the mid 1980s be in such dire need for food now.
When Haiti went to get a loan from the IMF and world bank who are directed by the U.S, they attached a string to it.
They said "you can only get loan if you open your market to outsiders" so they did, not knowing the they would flood the haitian market with their rice and putting thousands of farmer out of work.

Also the big countries like the U.S must understand that its a bad policy to go in a small country in flood their market with their extremely cheap products because that would put local farmers out of business and those now unemploy people will migrate to the big cities which will increase crime and create political instability.

Haiti produces little of its own food & imports everything, therefor it's vulnerable to any change in the price of commodities. Haiti apparently has very fertile soil. Why don't they grow their own food?

The problem is much more difficult now becuz the population has grown substantially since the ag economy was undermined so it's clearly more difficult to restart indigenous food production. How is that done?

It is just like when a walmart moves in a neighborhhod, that big walmart will destrot all the moms and paps local stores. This is just what happened in Haiti, now you can only fix it providing the local farmers some sort of protection like establishing high tariffs on outside commodities.

So it results subsequently to the type of decisions being made by the Haitian government. Protectionism or no. It ends up being a question of the resolve of the leaders within the country. Do we do whats best for Haiti or do we (Haitian leaders) do whats best for ourselves? So what are they doing to combat this & get the country back on its feet? Ultimately it becomes a question of the quality & concern of the leaders right in Haiti.
