I'm no China expert, but Martin Jacques has some interesting things to say about how China sees itself and it's future geopolitical position. Far from any 'buddhist' sense of human-non-human interconnection, he argues that the Chinese people and state have it's own version of Han ethnocentrism and racism not unlike what the US exhibits now and other imperial hegemonic powers (France, Spain, Britian, Japan) upheld in the past.
